  • TOURISM: Owerre-Ezukala Cave and Waterfall

    By Chime, Abumchukwu Chinedu

Media Handle (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube): Ou Travel and Tour

My visit to Owerre-Ezukala Cave and Waterfall in Iyiafor Owerre-Ezukala, Orumba South, Anambra State is one that remains fresh in my mind with lots of nostalgia. The waterfall is one of the biggest in Nigeria.

It is located in a forest area of the village bordered by Imo, Enugu and Abia.

The water falling from the big, tall cliff to splash on you while you are standing under it brings a refreshing excitement, but this is best done after you have toured the caves within and under the cliff, from one cavity tunneling into another to create a thrilling network of three chambers within it. As we move within the cave with a torch or a lantern, it brings a certain enthralling feeling of the old that enchants you so much, you wouldn’t want to leave no more.

Aside the tall waterfall, which is one of the tallest waterfalls in Nigeria, there is another smaller waterfall in the upper chamber of the cliff, and other amazing rocky water canals that can enchant your sight to a fix, as it did to me. You find yourself, like I did, embraced by that soothing warmth of nature. In addition to this, the people living around the village are open and welcoming.

Owerre-Ezukala Cave and Waterfall is a site worth visiting in Orumba South, Anambra State.

  • Pepper Soup

    Pepper Soup

It is the holidays and Christmas is my favorite holiday of each year. Christmas is usually the time to spend time with family, both nuclear and the extended family. The Igbos for instance, travel to their villages to be with their extended family. People also use the opportunity to visit people that they have not seen in a while. People get to travel to places to be with their loved ones. Christmas is the time for premium enjoyment. There is usually an abundance of everything to eat. There is a lot because you cook for your family, people coming to visit also come bearing gifts which most times are things to eat.

Growing up, one of the dishes we had on Christmas day was pepper soup with assorted meat and very cold Fanta (I really do love Fanta). The first time I heard of pepper soup as a child was at an end of the year party. I wondered how it will be. I have had other soups – egusi, nsala, vegetable etc, and I loved all of them so I was looking forward to eating it. I even had an imagination in my head of how it will look and taste too. Due to the fact that they called it “pepper soup”, I was expecting something thick just like other soups. It was served as an appetizer. When I tasted it, the pepper was “peppering”. It was HOT (the pepper in it and the temperature as well). Then there were assorted meats in it. As a child, I was just used to eating beef, chicken, fish, goat, kpomo and the part of cow called “towel” or “afo anu” in Igbo. Seeing some other unfamiliar parts made the soup not interesting to eat you know. But I ate the ones I was familiar with and left the others. I cannot remember what I thought of it then. But as time went on, I continued to eat it and I enjoyed it. My brothers were and still are super selective with meat, so, most times they do not eat most of their meat and they give it to me. I enjoyed pepper soup and still do.

Pepper soup can be served as an appetizer. It is a really light food, but it is not for vegetarians because the main content of this soup is meat. Pepper soup could be made with fish (catfish to be precise), beef and its companions (popularly known as assorted), chicken, goat and any other meat of choice. Simply put, pepper soup is you eating meat with its broth, but then some leaves are added to give it a unique taste. It is not as if all the pepper in the world is poured into this soup. The quantity of pepper in this soup is usually moderate to hot, depending on your tolerance for pepper and sometimes it is to the discretion of the person cooking.

Due to the hot nature of this soup, it is best prepared and served in the cold weather and also for people who might be under the weather. I mean, you will not want to have this when the weather is extremely hot. “Emene ya onwe gi”. You should not do that to yourself (lol). The taste of pepper soup is dependent on the meat used. As much as the same leaves can be used to cook them, they can never taste the same because of the different meat used. Pepper soup can never taste the same especially when different meats are used. That is to say that catfish pepper soup tastes different from goat meat pepper soup which also tastes different from cow meat pepper soup and vice versa.

You can actually tell that you have a bowl of pepper soup in front of you by perceiving it. The aroma of pepper soup is like the aroma of meat being cooked. It has a watery scent but still flavorful at the same time due to the spices and leaves used to cook it. You can perceive the particular protein used, then the pepper and the leaves used. All these blend together to give it a unique aroma and taste as well.

    Let us cook goat meat pepper soup because goat meat is the protein I prefer the most for pepper soup. You’ll need;

    • Goat meat
    • Big sized onion
    • Thyme
    • Fresh pepper
    • Ginger and garlic (optional and a little size)
    • Seasoning cubes (Knorr)
    • Fresh utazi and uziza leaves
    • Some salt

First, you wash your meat and put in a bowl. I like to marinate any meat that I am going to cook, so we’ll do that with this goat meat too. Wash your onion, fresh pepper, ginger and garlic (if using), and in a blender, blend onions, pepper, thyme, ginger and garlic and seasoning cubes till smooth. Pour into the bowl with goat meat and mix together. Put in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours. After 2 to 3 hours, you bring out the meat, mix it again with a spatula and turn into a pot. Add some salt to it and put the pot on fire. The meat will be cooked on low heat for a while till it brings out its own water. At this stage, you watch it constantly so it doesn’t burn. When it has cooked with its own water for a while, you add extra water to enable the meat cook properly. The heat for cooking the meat can only be increased when the water added begins to boil and then you let the meat cook.

While the meat is cooking, you pick a couple of utazi and uziza leaves. Wash them and cut, ready to add them to the pot when the meat is done. You have to also watch the water added to the pot so it does not dry up when the meat has not cooked properly. It is best to add water bit by bit so that it does not become too watery and affect the taste of the soup. After 40 to 60 minutes, the meat is expected to be done. You can check it by dipping a fork into one, if it comes off the fork easily, then the meat is done. Or you can just pick one and chew it to know if it is done or not. Once it is done, more pepper and seasoning cubes can be added to your taste.

Lastly, the uziza and utazi leaves are added. Just a little bit of both and it is left to boil one last time and tadaaaaaa, your goat meat pepper soup is ready.

You could serve this with white agidi, white rice or whatever is in your head to eat it with (nobody will judge you, lol). For me, pepper soup is best eaten alone with a bottle of any cold drink of your choice. ENJOY!

I will love to hear from you when you cook this soup and what you think about it. You can kindly send an email to enaamobi98@gmail.com or send a DM on Instagram @thecravefactory.ng. See ya!

    Regards,

    Chef Enna.

  • NKANU TODAY: Ịkụnkwụ

    NKANU TODAY: Ịkụnkwụ

    By Chetanne Chinelo

Our call for the 2022 Christmas edition of Nkanu Today column was at Obeagu, Awkunanaw, in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Pacesetter’s guest was a palm wine tapper, Chinwendu Eze, a young man whom we guess is in his mid or late thirties. We captured the entire process of Ịkụnkwụ (palm wine tapping) from palm trees. He had a little explanation to make.

“I tap my palm trees thrice a day; mornings, afternoons and evenings.

“To get palm wine from the tree, you cut the palm frond (igu) in a certain way to reveal the mmumu and leave it for 24 hours before positioning a gallon that will hold the palm wine. The first set of the fresh palm wine that drops into the gallon turns out so sweet but after two days, the rest of the palm wine will not be as sweet as the first set, it will be normal. Usually the fresh, sweet ones are diluted with normal palm wines to control the sweetness, or sometimes I leave it to ferment.

“The mmumu dies after a while. The harmattan period reduces the flow of the palm wine. During the heat period, the palm wine flows heavily.

“Some trees have up to 3 to 4 mmumu. While one dies off, the others grow back. The mmumu needs to be cut down early enough, if it stays unnoticed by a tapper for a while, it will be unable to produce palm wine, then we’ll have to wait till it grows back. It has a lifecycle of about two weeks if the palm tree is at its best condition. When it dies after two weeks, it begins to grow back. If it doesn’t, then we look for other palm trees to tap from”.

  • Queen Christiana Ego Igwesi: Going home in a blaze of glory

Queen Christiana Ego Igwesi: Going home in a blaze of glory

On Wednesday, October 5, 2022, an Amazon and matriarch of the Igwesi royal family of Obuoffia Ancient Kingdom in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Her Highness, Chief Ezinne Christiana Ego Igwesi (JP), left this world after a brief illness. Though the Queen departed at the ripe age of 76 but the reality of her demise is yet to dawn on many, especially her family and numerous admirers. Lolo Igwesi breathed her last at Raymond Anikwe Memorial Hospital, Independence Layout, Enugu.

Those familiar with her antecedents would agree that the philanthropist par excellence is going home in a blaze of glory. She came, saw and conquered.

Shakespeare literally had people like her in mind when he clearly stated in his novel, Julius Caesar, that: “When beggars die, there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes.”

Her life was one of passion and dedication to public service, even as her preoccupation was always to touch the lives of the vulnerable and the needy.

While active, she held different positions of trust and leadership, which included: member, Enugu State Rent Tribunal, Enugu South LGA; member, Transition Committee, Nkanu West LGA; and supervisory councillor for health, Nkanu West LGA. Also, she held positions in Umuada Igbo, National Council of Women Societies, and the Methodist Church Nigeria at various levels.

But the ‘mother of all mothers’ has gone the way of all mortals and her funeral rites would commence on December 15 with interment to be done on Friday, December 16, as announced by the revered Igwesi Royal Family of Obuoffia Ancient Kingdom.

This announcement was contained in a message by Chief U.S.A. Igwesi, the queen’s second son, as directed by His Royal Majesty, Eze Igwesi Obiora Igwesi, Eze-Chinawaeze III of Obuoffia Kingdom, traditional head of Obuoffia Awkunanaw and traditional ruler of Omuoha Awkunanaw, who is the first son.

Since the sad passage of the matriarch, the royal compound of the Igwesi family has been a Mecca of some sort following condolence visits from high-profile personalities, politicians and top businessmen.

Former member of the House of Representatives and former leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief U.S.A. Igwesi, the second son of the queen, revealed that the queen, who was a wife of the late Royal Majesty, Eze John Egbo Igwesi, Ezechinawaeze II of Obuoffia, was also the mother of the present traditional head of Obuoffia and traditional ruler of Omuoha, His Royal Majesty, Eze (Barr.) Igwesi O. Igwesi, among other surviving children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

U.S.A. Igwesi thanked personalities, leaders, friends and well-wishers from all walks of life who visited and/or sent messages of condolence and sympathy during the trying period for the family.

He said Lolo Nwakaego Igwesi was a great and hardworking woman, a virtuous wife to his late father and a dear mother who left no stone unturned in ensuring quality upkeep of her family.

U.S.A. Igwesi noted that she served in various capacities, including as SPA and supervisor in Nkanu West LGA, among other important roles in the local government and beyond.

Recalling his last encounter with his mum, he said: “On that fateful day, I came to see her at about 7am with her breakfast only to meet her stone dead and my siblings surrounding her and weeping. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was most devastating. A number of doctors had to confirm her dead before I was convinced. After looking at her lying lifeless with all the efforts to save her life and all the capable hands that surrounded her, I concluded that life is indeed vanity.”

CORONAVIRUS: FG halts Covid-19 tests for travellers

The Federal Government has approved the immediate relaxation of the COVID-19 safety measures and travel advisory, including the suspension of all pre-departure, pre-boarding, and post-arrival PCR test requirements.

This was contained in a statement on Monday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC), Boss Mustapha.

According to Mustapha, President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval follows the recommendations of the PSC based on clinical and laboratory evidence of a sustained reduction in COVID-19 infection/transmission across the country.

“All pre-departure and post-arrival PCR test requirements for all persons who are not fully vaccinated have been suspended,” the statement reads in part.

“With the suspension of both the preboarding and post-arrival PCR tests, passengers will no longer be required to upload evidence of vaccination on the Nigeria International Travel Portal (NITP). All unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers are strongly encouraged to get fully vaccinated.

“Health Declaration Form. A simplified Health Declaration (non-covid-19 specific) shall be completed by all passengers arriving in Nigeria on the Nigeria International Travel Portal (NITP); while provision will be made on arrival for those who were unable to complete this form before departure.

“Finally, the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC) passionately appeals to Nigerians to ensure that they take their COVID-19 vaccinations as well as booster doses.”

With Nigeria’s first recorded COVID-19 case in February 2020, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) restricted international flights from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International airport in Abuja on March 23, 2020.

However, emergency and essential flights are exempted from the restriction, according to the NCAA. This followed the Federal Government’s shutdown of three other airports on March 21, 2020, including Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

However, after five months of the shutdown, NCAA resumed international flights on September 5, 2020, with strict COVID-19 guidelines for passengers.

  • Monkeypox will be renamed Mpox -World Health Organization

Monkeypox will be renamed Mpox -World Health Organization

Monkeypox is to be renamed mpox in English, the World Health Organization announced Monday, in a bid to avoid stigmatisation stemming from the existing name.

Monkeypox received its name because the virus was originally identified in monkeys kept for research in Denmark in 1958, but the disease is found in a number of animals, and most frequently in rodents.

“Following a series of consultations with global experts, WHO will begin using a new preferred term ‘mpox’ as a synonym for monkeypox. Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while ‘monkeypox’ is phased out,” the UN health agency said in a statement.

“WHO will adopt the term mpox in its communications, and encourages others to follow these recommendations, to minimise any ongoing negative impact of the current name and from adoption of the new name.”

The disease was first discovered in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the spread among humans since then mainly limited to certain West and Central African countries where it is endemic.

But in May, cases of the disease, which causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions, began spreading rapidly around the world, mainly among men who have sex with men.

Some 81,107 cases and 55 deaths have been reported to the WHO this year, from 110 countries.

  • Peter Mbah institutes N2M health insurance scheme at St. Cecilia hospital during first anniversary

Peter Mbah institutes N2M health insurance scheme at St. Cecilia hospital during first anniversary

Dr. Peter Mbah the Enugu governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has instituted a health insurance scheme with a premium worth two million naira for 100 indigent persons in Nkanu East.

This was done earlier yesterday in commemoration of the first anniversary of the St. Cecilia Memorial Hospital, Owo, Nkanu East LGA, built and equipped by his charity, Peter Mbah Foundation and commissioned in November last year.

The health insurance intervention was organized in partnership with the Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage pursuant to the Foundation’s objective of bringing quality and affordable healthcare to everyone in Enugu, especially the indigent citizens and residents of the state.

The manager of the Foundation, Ms. Chika Mbah speaking on the development said that having functioned for one year, it was discovered that poverty posed a huge threat to getting healthcare, saying this inspired Dr. Mbah to make the move to capture some indigent persons in the health insurance scheme to afford them good healthcare.

On the inception of the hospital, she stated that the intention was to get standard healthcare closer to the people in the rural area and reduce child and maternal mortality.

According to Ms. Chika, the hospital with a fully equipped pharmacy, X-ray room, theatre, ultrasound, delivery room, two general wards, three private wards, an incubator, a laboratory, a residential area for healthcare workers, and many more, partnered with the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Love of the Catholic Church to get health workers resident in the hospital, with other visiting and committed doctors.

“We have experienced reverend sisters in the medical fields working here, and doctors visiting. We also have Dr. Nwachi, a consultant gynecologist at the UNTH from Amankanu that comes here every Thursday to give free services as his own way of helping the people out. Among the workers, three are resident in the hospital including a midwife, Rev. Sister Kelechi with 49 years experience in the field,” she said.

She explained that due to the level of poverty in the area, patients were still allowed to pay at their own rates while the Peter Mbah Foundation continued to foot the bills of the hospital in general.

On the patients, Ms Chika said that beyond the Owo community, people never ceased coming from other communities like Amankanu, Oruku, Amechi Idodo, Nkalagu and many more.

She called on other dignitaries of the community and the state to help with the resources to enroll more needy persons into the health insurance progamme, saying that will ensure quality healthcare for more people in the rural communities and reduce preventable mortality cases.

Monica Ajah, the first patient at the hospital at its inception, expressed joy at how better she had been since she began receiving care from the hospital and her gratitude to Dr. Peter Mbah.

“I am grateful that this hospital is here. I was the first patient to be treated when they started. I was barely walking then, but I am well now because of the care the nurses and doctors here give me. Peter Mbah is a good man. God bless him for deciding to bless his people. May God bless him more and keep him,’ she said.

The resident midwife Rev. Sister Kelechi, fondly called Granny, didn’t hold back about how happy she was about the establishment and the people, “I rejoice with the people because I know the statistics here and the progress so far. Today, they woke me up at 1am to help a dying lady. She eventually lost her pregnancy, but we were able to save her. And we have faced many situations like that. Now imagine what would have happened if this hospital wasn’t here,” she added.

She however added that the first 1000 days of a child and adolescent is a critical window essential for promotion of optimal growth, health and development.

Strikingly, the National Coordinator, Academic and Research Network, Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria, Prof. Kola Matthew Anigo in a presentation tagged, “The Conceptual Framework on Maternal and Child Nutrition” noted that the issue of malnutrition continues to be one of the world’s most critical health and human development challenges. He further revealed that the cause of malnutrition is multi-layered and that most prevalent health cases like stunting, risks of stroke, low birth weight, to mention but a few, often wrongly attributed to intergenerational traits, are undoubtedly proven to be the effects of malnutrition. Prof. Anigo reiterated that when early nutrition is given priority in the society that human capital development is built, school completion is increased, poverty is reduced and the economy is boosted.

In line with the other facilitators, the Steering Committee Chairman CS-SUNN and Chairperson Advocacy Save The Children International, Mr. Ifedilichukwu Ekene Innocent added that human capital development remains the fulcrum for greater economic development especially for middle and low-income nations like Nigeria.

He however noted that for Nigeria as a country with high burden of malnutrition to achieve the SDG 2 zero hunger goal; among others a multisectoral approach to nutrition programme, budget advocacy/budget process and funding of nutrition interventions/investments in social sectors like nutrition should be adopted.

Capping it up, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. George Ugwu, recalled that the Multi-sectoral approach is already working in Enugu state. He however added that there is need to integrate some of our very own healthy traditional practices like Omugwo in order to improve nutrition.

The workshop had in attendance the Ag. Chairman of the State Committee on Nutrition, Mr. Edwin Anukwe, Mrs. Chinwe Onumonu, the Academia led by Prof. Lizzy Ngwu, State Nutrition Officers and Permanent Secretaries from 12 States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, Kogi, Rivers, Enugu, Imo and Benue States, Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and Members of the Press.

Risk of fresh Ebola outbreak: Reps raises alarm, urges FG to activate preventive measures

The House of Representatives has raised the alarm over the possibility of the ebola virus returning to Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to immediately activate preventive measures.

Members of the House, at the plenary on Thursday, unanimously adopted a motion moved by one of them, Dachung Bagos, who warned that the virus might spread to Nigeria as other African countries had been recording ebola cases.

It was titled ‘Motion of Urgent Public Importance on the Need for Federal Government to Activate Response against the Possible Detection of Ebola in Nigeria.’

Bagos noted that the Ugandan health authorities, on September 20, 2022, declared an outbreak of Ebola disease, caused by the Sudan virus, following laboratory confirmation of a patient from a village in Madudu sub-county, Mubende District, Central Uganda.

The lawmaker also noted that the World Health Organisation expressed concerns that in the absence of licensed vaccines and therapeutics for prevention and treatment of Sudan virus disease, the risk of potential serious public health impact is high.

According to him, investigations are ongoing to determine the scope of the outbreak and the possibility of spreading. “Importation of cases to neighbouring countries cannot be ruled out at this stage,” he stated.

Bagos further said, “According to the information currently available, the overall risk has been assessed as high at national level considering the confirmed Sudan virus and the lack of an authorised vaccine, the possibility that the event started three weeks before the identification of the index case and several transmission chains have not been tracked.

“The House is worried that the Ebola virus is giving a lot of people concern around the world, as it was the variant that gave a lot of infections and fatalities in some countries.

“The House is concerned that Nigeria has reason to be warier at the moment as the deadly Ebola virus can get into Nigeria through our borders or travellers coming into Nigeria for business or any reason and could become dominant if unchecked.”

Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Federal Ministry of Health to “immediately activate strategies to be implemented in monitoring adherence to Ebola guidelines and ensure residents continue to comply with all advisories aimed at curtailing the likely development of the virus in Nigeria.”

The lawmakers also mandated the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to ensure intensive observation and check on travel protocols for inbound passengers from red flag countries.

They further mandated the NCDC to set up a national response to control the likely emergence and spread of the Ebola virus in order to spare Nigerians the brunt of the pandemic.
