Uber has officially announced the immediate shutdown of its operations in Nigeria following a strategic review of its business, bringing a sudden end to its ride-hailing services in the country effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The global tech giant disclosed the development in a direct message sent to its drivers on Wednesday, informing them that the shutdown takes effect instantly and that the application will no longer transmit passenger requests.
“We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026. From this date, you will no longer be able to receive rider trip requests through the Uber app,” Uber stated.
Acknowledging the severe impact of the announcement on thousands of independent contractors who rely on the platform for their livelihood, the company described the development as “heavy news.”
“We know this is heavy news, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our journey in Nigeria,” the company said. “For years, your commitment to your riders has kept this city moving safely and affordably.”
Reflecting on its tenure in the Nigerian market, the transport tech firm noted that it remained proud of the digital infrastructure it built to empower local operators.
“We are so proud of what the platform has been able to achieve in Nigeria, serving as the technology bridge between riders and your independent services,” Uber said.
The firm did not provide specific reasons or detailed operational factors behind its sudden exit from Africa’s most populous nation within the dispatch sent to its partners.
To manage the offboarding process, the company stated that its administrative support channels will remain open for a few weeks to resolve outstanding driver queries and final settlements.
“Our Help Center will remain open until 24 September ’26 to assist you with any questions,” the company explained.
The exit marks a massive shift in Nigeria’s competitive urban transport sector, where app-based mobility platforms have become a critical pillar of daily commuting and job creation. Uber closed its valedictory message with a brief note of appreciation to its local partners, stating, “Thank you for being a part of the Uber community.”
