    The Enugu football renaissance received another major boost at the weekend as Rangers International FC Under-19 team played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Pan-African G.O.A.T (Game On Afrika Tournament) in Accra, Ghana.

    Nigeria emerged champions after a tense 1–1 draw against hosts Ghana, before sealing victory 4–2 on penalties at the Madina Zongo pitch. The success bore a strong Enugu imprint, with six players from the Rangers Youth Academy, alongside their coach, forming the backbone of the Nigeria selected squad.

    Coached by Felix Ifeanyi, the Rangers U19 players displayed composure, technical quality and discipline throughout the tournament, underlining the growing strength of the club’s youth development programme and reaffirming Enugu’s rising status in African football.

    Reacting to the feat, General Manager of Rangers International FC, Amobi Ezeaku, praised Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his motivation, support and sustained commitment to the club, describing the victory as a direct outcome of purposeful leadership.

    “This success did not come by chance,” Ezeaku said.

    “Governor Peter Mbah has consistently motivated us and shown uncommon commitment to Rangers International FC, especially in youth development. His support has given us the confidence to plan long-term, invest in our academy and expose our young players to top-level competition.”

    He added that the governor’s passion for sports development had created an enabling environment for young footballers to thrive.

    “When players know that the government believes in them and backs the club, it reflects in their performance. This victory in Ghana is a testament to that vision and support,” Ezeaku noted.

    Observers say the triumph in Accra reflects the broader reforms in Enugu sports under the Governor Mbah administration, whose administration has prioritised infrastructure, welfare, grassroots programmes and professional management across the sector.

    They added that the interventions have helped reposition Rangers not only as a domestic powerhouse, but also as a leading hub for talent development in Africa.

    The Ghana success also comes at a crucial time as the Rangers U19 team prepares for an upcoming tour of the United Kingdom. The tour is expected to offer the young players valuable exposure, competitive experience and opportunities to attract interest from international clubs and scouts.

    “This win gives the boys confidence going into the UK tour,” Ezeaku said, adding that “It sends a clear message that Enugu is producing players who can compete anywhere in the world.”

    Under Ezeaku’s leadership, Rangers International FC has embraced modern football administration, strengthening its youth pathway and adopting global best practices in management and player development. The club’s academy structure is increasingly being viewed as a model within Nigeria and beyond.

    For the Rangers U19 players who spoke to newsmen, the journey from Enugu to Accra, and soon to the United Kingdom, symbolises ambition and opportunity.

    The victory, according to officials, reinforces a growing narrative; that strategic leadership, sustained investment and belief in youth can translate into continental success.

    D’Tigress Players Get $100,000 Each, Flat, National Honours 

    The Federal Government has rewarded D’Tigress, Nigeria’s female basketball team, with Order of the Niger (OON) national honours, with each of the players getting $100,000 and a flat.

    Members of the Coach Rena Makama-led technical team also got $50,000 each.

    This was announced when President Bola Tinubu hosted the team on Monday evening following the team’s unprecedented fifth consecutive #AfroBasketWomen victory. At the reception in Abuja, the president was represented by his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

    Last week, the President conferred similar national honours and gifts on the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th title of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.

    In the final on Sunday, Nigeria edged out Mali 78-64 in a tense showdown, displaying resilience and composure to claim their seventh AfroBasket title.

    They have dominated African women’s basketball, winning their 29th consecutive game without a single loss since 2015.

    As with most of their early games in the tournament, Nigeria got off to a slow start.

    However, spurred by Mali’s intensity, Rena Wakama’s side regrouped in the second quarter and headed into halftime with the scores level at 41–41.To qualify for the final against Mali, Nigeria had to dig deep to defeat Senegal 75-68 in a hotly-contested game, rightly dubbed “final before the final”.

    A standout performance by Amy Okonkwo and Ezinne Kalu on Sunday night was critical to ensuring that the D’Tigress retain the title for a historic fifth consecutive time.

    While Okonkwo contribute 19 points on the night, Kalu delivered 20 points, including several crucial baskets in the second and third quarters.

    Promise Amukamara and Victoria Macaulay also made key contributions, while Musa added nine crucial points and four rebounds in a game that once again showcased Nigeria’s depth.

    The Third quarter of the game proved to be very decisive, with the Nigerian ladies tightening their defence to outscore the Malians 20-15.

    At the beginning of the fourth quarter, he Nigerians led 61–56 and went on from there to win the game.

    The victory has cemented the D’Tigress’ place as the most feared women basketball team in Africa.

    “I came because I love this place, and I feel good here,” he said, his voice filled with genuine emotion.

    “I’m truly grateful to everyone who worked to bring me here.”

    He went on to name key figures behind the landmark deal, including club president, vice president Abdullah Bey, technical advisor George Gardi, and head coach Okan Buruk; all of whom were instrumental in completing the record move.

  • Super Falcons win record 10th WAFCON title

    Super Falcons players celebrating,Nigeria’s Super Falcons completed a dramatic comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 on Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, clinching a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

    The final, attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, showcased the growing quality and intensity of African women’s football. For Morocco, it was a heartbreaking end to what had been a dream run.

    The Atlas Lionesses took control early, thrilling the home crowd with a commanding first-half performance. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a fierce drive from the edge of the box. Eleven minutes later, Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead, weaving through the Nigerian defence and firing into the far corner with precision.

    Despite enjoying more possession (56.9%) in the opening half, Nigeria struggled to find any rhythm and managed only two attempts on goal, neither threatened.

    However, the second half told a different story.

    Nigeria found a lifeline in the 63rd minute when a contentious penalty was awarded. Ijamilusi’s cross struck defender Nouhaila Benzina’s arm, and after much protest from the Moroccans, the referee pointed to the spot. Jennifer Okoronkwo stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the Moroccan keeper to make it 2-1.

    Just eight minutes later, the Super Falcons levelled the match. Okoronkwo turned provider, racing down the right and squaring for Ijamilusi, who tapped in from close range to complete the comeback.

    Morocco thought they had won a penalty of their own in the 79th minute following a handball incident, but after a VAR review, the decision was controversially overturned. The reversal added to Morocco’s frustration in what they believed was a string of officiating decisions against them.

    With the game heading for extra time, Nigeria struck the decisive blow in the 88th minute. Christy Ucheibe’s long free-kick found Toni Payne, who flicked it into the path of Chinwendu Echegini to poke it home and seal Nigeria’s victory, a goal that fulfilled Coach Randy Waldrum’s mission of winning “Title Number 10.”

    The victory came with a $1 million prize, a result of CAF’s 45% increase in the tournament’s total prize pool, now standing at $3.475 million.

    While the Moroccans fell just short of their first continental title, their performance throughout the tournament won admiration. Their road to the final included a memorable penalty shootout win over Ghana in the semi-finals. Nigeria, meanwhile, earned their spot with a hard-fought 2-1 win over defending champions South Africa.

    In the third-place playoff, Ghana defeated South Africa 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, securing the bronze medal.

    The President lauded the Falcons, not only for their success on the field, remaining unbeaten through the group stages, winning every knockout match, and conceding only one goal in the semi-finals, but also for their sportsmanship.

    He highlighted their visit to injured South African player Gabriela Salgado after the semi-final clash as “a simple act of compassion that reflects our shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection, which we Africans hold in high regard.”

    Tinubu reminded the team of their winning pedigree, noting that Nigeria has triumphed in all nine previous WAFCON finals, urging them to write history once again by lifting a record 10th title.

    How it happened

    The match itself lived up to its billing in Casablanca, as Nigeria booked a place in the WAFCON final for the 10th time in history — and will now look to clinch a 10th continental title.

    After a tense first half marked by tactical duels, Nigeria took the lead in the 45th minute when a handball in the South African box gave Rasheedat Ajibade the chance to convert from the penalty spot.

    The Super Falcons captain made no mistake, firing past Andile Dlamini, just as she did in last year’s Olympic qualifier.

    South Africa responded after the break. A foul by Osinachi Ohale inside the box gifted Banyana Banyana a penalty, which Linda Motlhalo calmly slotted past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the 56th minute.

    The game grew tense and physical, with both teams probing for a winner.

    Just as the match seemed destined for extra time, Nigeria struck in dramatic fashion. Deep into stoppage time, Michelle Alozie’s hopeful free kick from distance evaded everyone, bounced awkwardly, and sailed into the net — catching Dlamini flat-footed and sending the Nigerian bench into wild celebrations.

    The dramatic win marked Nigeria’s first WAFCON victory over South Africa in their last three meetings, having lost to the Banyana Banyana in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022.

    Nigeria stormed into the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia on Friday in Casablanca.

    The Copper Queens were tipped to challenge the nine-time champions, but it was one-way traffic as the Super Falcons put on a ruthless display of power and precision.

    Nigeria made an instant impact when centre-back Osinachi Ohale rose unmarked to head home a free-kick just two minutes into the match, leaving Zambia goalkeeper Petronella Musole helpless.

    Zambia had a golden opportunity to pull level on the half-hour mark, but Grace Chanda squandered her chance. Just minutes later, Esther Okoronkwo punished them with a well-taken strike to double Nigeria’s lead.

    On the brink of half-time, Chinwendu Ihezuo seized on defensive confusion to calmly slot home Nigeria’s third, all but sealing the contest before the break.

    Oluwatosin Demehin added a fourth with a header from yet another expertly delivered free-kick midway through the second half, and substitute Folashade Ijamilusi completed the rout in added time with a clinical finish.

    Zambia had previously edged Nigeria for third place at the 2022 WAFCON, but their star strikers Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji — each with three goals in the group stage — were kept completely quiet, failing to register a single shot on target.

    With this commanding win, Nigeria remain the only team yet to concede a goal at the tournament. They will now face either defending champions South Africa or Senegal in Tuesday’s semi-final at 16:00 GMT.

    1996 Olympic bronze medalist, Mary Onyeali and former General Manger of Rangers International Football Club as well as current Chief Operating Officer of Nigeria Professional Football League, Davidson Owumi, were among the big names in the nation’s sports industry on parade as the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah inaugurated the Local Organising Committee, LOC, for the 2026 National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state.

    Other members of the LOC, which has the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, as the Chairman, are Bamiduro Olumide, a seasoned sports management professional and recently retired Director of Elite Athletes Development, National Sports Commission; Aku Aghazu, a skilled lawyer with expertise in sports management; a representative of Nilayo Sports Management; and Chief Operating Officer of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Blessing Ekwe.

    Also, on the Committee are the Director of Organising, Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports; Director of Coaching in the Ministry, Ephraim Ochomma; Obiora Obasi, also of the state Ministry; Chairman of Enugu State Football Association Tony Ugwu; and President, Modern Pentathlon Federation of Nigeria, Jonathan Nnaji.

    Inaugurating the LOC in his office, Mbah, said the state was not just determined to host the NSF, but to also give the nation’s sports industry and sports lovers an unforgettable experience.

    Mbah said the government was deliberate in the choice of members, assembling experienced persons from around the country to ensure that Enugu lived up to expectation.

    “We want to set the standard because we are Enugu. I am happy that the membership of the LOC is quite rich. It comprises people with great experience in sport administration, and frankly speaking, their reputations precede them. Therefore, we are glad to have this pool of resources to be members of the LOC,” he said.

    Mbah added that the state would also leverage its experience hosting the 2009 Under 17 FIFA World Cup and the recent Enugu City International Marathon, noting that his administration was already taking steps to ensure that the sports infrastructure for the NSF were brought to world standard.

    “We have started taking steps at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. We are going to do an extensive revamp. It is going to take a new look. You are not going to recognise the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium because we will bring it to almost a brand new stadium.

    “We are also identifying other sporting centers that are not there, such as the aquatic centre. They are going to be there. We are also doing a fit-for-purpose games village known as the Agwu Games Village. We are building new structures there.

    “We are indeed poised to give Nigerians and the world at large a world class sporting festival,” Governor Mbah concluded.

    Listing the terms of reference of the LOC, he said the Committee would, among other things “be responsible for the successful conduct of the festival; be responsible for the planning and execution of the festival to ensure that the event is organised with the relevant regulations guiding the games.”

    The Committee is also to set up relevant subcommittees as it deemed fit and in accordance with the Festival’s regulations and be responsible for coordinating the activities of the various Sub-Committees; and ensure the availability of the games village that will accommodate all the accredited athletes and officials.

    Responding, LOC Chairman, Ekweremadu, thanked the governor for considering them fit for the job, assuring that the Committee would work to give the participants the best experience as directed, but also ensure that Enugu State hosts to win.

    “The members of the local organising committee are very mindful of Your Excellency’s vision to execute a world-class National Sports Festival, which will set a benchmark for sports festival in Nigeria moving forward. We are determined to win and to make you and the people of the state proud,” he added.

    The Chairman equally used the opportunity of the inauguration to present to the governor the flag for the NSF as passed on to Enugu State by Ogun State at the just concluded 22nd edition in the South West state.

    Super Eagles and Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has revealed why he wears a face mask during matches.

    The 26-year-old, who was loaned to Süper Lig club Galatasaray in the recently concluded 2024/2025 season, is known for wearing a mask during international and club matches.

    The former Lille striker, currently holidaying in Nigeria, spoke during an interview with broadcaster and radio host Ifedayo ‘Daddy Freeze’ Olarinde, which was posted on Facebook on Thursday.

    He revealed that the incident which led to him wearing the mask occurred in 2021 during a Serie A match between Napoli and Inter Milan.

    Osimhen, who began his senior career in Germany with VfL Wolfsburg in 2017, described the injury as a near-death experience.

    He recalled how it happened: “In 2021, we’re having a game against Inter Milan in San Siro Stadium. My teammate crossed the ball for me, so I wanted to head the ball. And the guy was bringing his head, and then his head hit my face, and all the bones got broken. So actually, it was all funny, but you know, this type of joke is that if I slap you, you’ll see a star. I was sitting blankly.

    “If you watch the replay, I raised my hand until their goalkeeper touched me. That was when I knew I was alive. It was a near-death experience. So I stood up, after about 10 minutes on the floor, and went directly to the hospital. I even asked our team doctor when I would play again. I never knew the injury was that bad. And then the doctors came, they did an X-ray, just an X-ray, not even an MRI.”

    Additionally, the Lagos-born player stated that wearing a face mask was recommended after his surgery.

    He noted that he would continue to wear the mask whenever he is on the pitch.

    “They did an X-ray, and the doctor came and said, from what he saw in the X-ray, I have to do surgery as quickly as possible. I said I’m not doing surgery, that they can’t cut my face. He said, No, they will go through my jaw. I can’t eat here for the rest of my life. So they went through my jaw, brought out the fragments, took everything out, then saw everything. So here is an iron, one here, and the other one is here. I have iron in my face.

    “There are some injuries that you just take out and play normally when they’re done. But mine is, I don’t think there are worse injuries in football, but mine also is, I could lose my eyes. It was so bad, and that’s the reason why I put on the mask. So, I can jump, go head to head. If anyone hits me, they get injured because it’s like a, it’s powerful,” said Osimhen.

    Furthermore, the player spoke about his humble beginnings, revealing that he once did menial jobs to survive during childhood.

    According to him, he fetched water for neighbours and cleaned algae-filled gutters, earning as little as N80 and N30 for each task, respectively. Premium Times

    Moses Simona and Samuel Chukwueze scored in each half as both teams played a 2-2 stalemate to take the match to penalty shootout.

    The 2025 Unity Cup, which was held from May 27 to 31 at Brentford Community Stadium in London was a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and football.

    The tournament featured four teams: Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. It was organised to foster unity and pride among the African and Caribbean diasporas in London.
