  • Waiting game continues for Mbappe

During PSG’s 3-2 Champions League win over Bayern Munich, Jamie Carragher made the surprising claim on commentary that Kylian Mbappe had “never done it at the highest level”.

In all seriousness, there is a growing sense in some quarters that the young Frenchman has outgrown his native top flight.

Losing both Mbappe and Neymar in one summer would be catastrophic for Mauricio Pochettino, but it’s long been touted as a potential reality, with just one destination in mind for the Brazilian: his old haunt of Barcelona.

Mbappe’s future is a little more uncertain, but two reports emerged which might shed some light on his intentions.

According to The Telegraph, there’s now “genuine concern” that he’ll move on and it’s now only “50/50” that he’ll stay at Parc des Princes.

He continues to resist signing a contract extension, despite sporting director Leonardo’s best efforts dating back more than a year.

The report adds that some within the club think Mbappe has become “distracted” and while PSG don’t want to sell, it is possible they could accept a fee deterred over a number of years rather than a one-off transfer payment from one of Europe’s top clubs.

It’s also emerged from Spain, specifically from Cadena Ser that Mbappe himself has decided on his next move, officially telling PSG he wants to leave.

The 22-year-old has decided he wants to join Real Madrid – but here’s where the plot thickens.

It’s stated Los Blancos also want to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer – and this doesn’t sound like an ‘either, or’.

“Mbappe isn’t the only marquee signing Madrid are eyeing ahead of the summer transfer window,” AS state. “Like Mbappe, the 20-year-old… has identified the Spanish capital as his destination of choice.”

  • FG yet to release Funds for Edo State to host National Sports Festival

The Federal Government is yet to release the fund it promised Edo State for the hosting of the 2020 National Sports Festival with less than a week to its commencement.

Musa Ebomhiana, a Project Manager in the Media and Communications Sub-Committee of the festival’s Local Organising Committee, disclosed this on Sunday in Benin.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria however that, while the Edo State Government still remained hopeful the fund would be released, an early release would be better.

“This will ensure smooth planning for the nation’s number one sports fiesta,” he said.

Ebomhiana pointed out that the need to have a smooth planning was the reason the state’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, had last week appealed for the fund’s early release.

“We are taking seriously the promise by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, that money will be released before the commencement of the festival.

“We know and are sure that the Federal Government will not want to disappoint the youths and sports enthusiasts. We believe that it will do the needful.”

Ebomhiana however said all that was needed, aside fund, for the successful hosting of the country’s biggest sports event had been put in place by the Edo government.

He said sports men and women would be provided with the best and most modern sports facilities in the country.

The festival official added that the participants and other visitors would enjoy the hospitable nature of the people.

“The remodelled Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin boasts of the best facilities in the country, so also are other centres that will play host to various sports during the festival,” he stated.

Ebomhiana disclosed that the accreditation of sports journalists for the festival would begin on Tuesday.

“Only journalists with duly-confirmed media organisations will be considered,” he said.

The 20th NSF has been scheduled to hold from April 2 to April 14.

It was earlier billed to take place in March 2020, before it suffered several postponements as a result of the  outbreak of the COVID-19.

At the Hawthorns, Super Eagles midfielder, Semi Ajayi will be free to return (after serving out his two-match suspension) to the West Brom ahead of their tomorrow’s clash with Newcastle United. Ajayi bagged his first EPL red card and second of his professional career when he was sent off in their goalless draw at Burnley two weeks ago.

It was the Billy Goats’ third straight loss in the league since the Nigerian joined at midseason. The remaining Nigerians at the club, Tolu Arokodare has not been called up for the last two games at all while Kingsley Ehizibue was benched in the whitewash at the Allianz Arena. Though Simy Nwankwo got his eighth goal of the season in Bergamo , it seems a return to Serie B could be imminent with the type of results they have recorded since  the season began.
