Bayern table €120m bid for Osimhen

Bayern table €120m bid for Osimhen

Bayern Munich are reportedly preparing a €120m bid for Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, Corriere dello Sport reports.

The Bavarians see the 23-year-old Nigerian as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is on the verge of departing the Allianz Arena this summer.

Lewandowski, who has a year left on his contract, is keen to join Spanish giants, Barcelona.

Osimhen has been impressive for the Partenopei since his arrival two years ago from Ligue 1 outfit Lille and the Partenopei are aware of the interest from other clubs, but are not ready to let him leave for any amount less than €100m, having signed him for a club and African record fee of €75m.

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United are also reportedly interested in the striker who has three years left on his contract with Napoli.

The Nigerian has netted 24 times and provided eight assists in 51 league appearances for the Naples side.

Last season, Osimhen scored 14 goals and recorded five assists in 27 appearances in the Serie A in the concluded 2021/2022 season.

He also netted four goals and one assist in the Europa League for Napoli, who finished third in Serie A last season with 79 points from 38 games.

Meanwhile, former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has urged Bayern to sign Osimhen should Lewandowski leave, saying he will need little time to adapt to the Bundesliga environment.

“If Bayern let Robert Lewandowski go, Victor would be a good alternative,” Rohr told Sports Bild.

“I think he would prevail in Munich. Since he already has experience in the Bundesliga and speaks a little German, his adjustment period is, of course, shorter than with other players from abroad,” Rohr added.”

  • CAF confirms postponement of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

CAF confirms postponement of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

The 2023 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) initially billed to take place in Cote d’ Ivoire from June 2023 has been postponed to January 2024.

The decision was one of the key decisions taken during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee meeting held on Sunday.

CAF through its President, Patrice Motsepe, announced the 34th edition, which was initially scheduled from June 23 to July 23, 2023, will no longer go on as planned due to the weather conditions in the West African country.

“The 2023 AFCON will now be played between January and February 2024,” Mostepe told the media during a press conference in Morocco.

“This is one of the issues we discussed during our congress meeting here in Morocco and the official dates will be communicated later.

“It is after deliberations we came into the decision, we have partners and even though we make decisions, it is out of respect that we take the advice we are getting that we cannot take a risk [to host the tournament] and so that is why we have made the necessary announcement today [Sunday].

“It is not good for African football to play a tournament that can be washed out, it is not good for Africa and the continent at large and so we have to postpone it.”

Motsepe, however, lauded Ivory Coast for the preparations they have already put in place to stage the tournament.

“I am happy and impressed with the infrastructure put in place by Ivory Coast in readiness for the tournament and I am sure they will host a very good tournament,” Motsepe continued.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are one of the teams eyeing qualification for the next AFCON tournament and they have started the qualification series quite well; winning their first two games against Sierra Leone and then Sao Tome and Principe.

At the last edition of the biennial football tournament held in Cameroon, the Super Eagles despite showing early signs of promise crashed out in the second round in a 1-0 loss to Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles.

Senegal went on to be crowned champions after defeating Egypt on penalties in the final.

It is worthy to note that the AFCON tournament held in Cameroon also suffered its own fair share of postponements.

However, unlike this case where CAF is making a decision due to weather contingencies, the tournament in Cameroon was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Osimhen scores four as Super Eagles thrash Sao Tome and Principe 10-0

Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen scored four goals against Sao Tome and Principe to help Nigeria win 10-0 in their second game of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers played at the Stade Adrar in Agadir, Morocco.

The Eagles got off to a flying start, with Osimhen scoring in the 9th minute from Moses Simon’s assist. Just before the half-hour mark, Osimhen turned provider as Simon registered his name on the scoresheet for the second goal.

Osimhen would be the creator again as the game moved into half-time, the striker setting up his partner, Terem Moffi, for the first international goal of his career.

Three minutes into the second half, Osimhen scored his second goal of the afternoon and fourth for Nigeria off an assist by Ademola Lookman, the former Everton man starting for the Eagles for the first time.

Etebo scored his first goal in over a year, Terem Moffi got his second of the day, and Lookman capped a superb individual performance with his first-ever goal for Nigeria before substitute Ahmed Musa set up Osimhen for the final two goals of the game, first in the 65th minute and then the 84th minute.

The Eagles have now recorded their biggest ever win in history, breaking the previous record of 10-1, which was set against Dahomey (now the Benin Republic) in November 1959.

The Super Eagles sit on top of Group A with six points from two games, scoring eleven goals and conceding just once.

  • Bale pens emotional farewell message to Real Madrid

Gareth Bale wrote a farewell letter to Real Madrid on Wednesday, the Welshman bringing an end to his nine-year spell at the Spanish club, where he said his “dream became a reality”.

Bale will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of June, with the 32-year-old yet to confirm what he will do next.

His future is likely to depend on whether Wales qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, with retirement a possible option if they miss out.

“I write this message to say thank you to all my teammates, past and present, my managers, the backroom staff and to the fans that supported me,” Bale wrote in a letter to Real Madrid, posted on social media in both English and Spanish.

“I arrived here nine years ago as a young man who wanted to realise my dream of playing for Real Madrid. To wear the pristine white kit, to wear the crest on my chest, to play at the Santiago Bernabeu, to win titles and to be part of what it’s so famous for, to win the Champions League.

“I can now look back, reflect and say with honesty that this dream became a reality and much, much more.

“To be a part of this club’s history and to achieve what we achieved while I was a Real Madrid player has been an incredible experience and one I will never forget.

“I also want to thank president Florentino Perez, Jose Angel Sanchez and the board for giving me the opportunity to play for this club. Together we were able to create some moments that will live forever in the history of this club and football. It has been an honour.”

After joining Madrid from Tottenham for 100 million euros in 2013, Bale went on to win 16 major trophies with Real Madrid, including five Champions Leagues, three La Ligas and one Copa del Rey.

He also won three Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and a Spanish Super Cup.

    Memorable moments

More than his trophies, Bale will be remembered for a handful of spectacular moments, including his two goals scored off the bench against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev, the first coming from a stunning bicycle kick.

He scored another hugely important goal in the 2014 Champions League final in Lisbon, his header at the back post giving Real Madrid the lead against Atletico Madrid in extra-time, as they went on to win the club’s long-awaited 10th European Cup.

Perhaps most memorable was Bale’s incredible solo goal at Mestalla to win the 2014 Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

Bale’s popularity with the Real Madrid fans, though, has plummeted in recent years as injuries and a perceived lack of commitment pushed him to the fringes of the first team.

He was barely on speaking terms with Zinedine Zidane by the end of the 2017-18 season and hopes that Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure might revive his Real Madrid career were never realised.

A frosty relationship with the Spanish press harmed his reputation, with aspects of his personal life – including his passion for playing golf and a lack of fluency in Spanish – increasingly used to support the idea he had lost interest in his Real Madrid career.

The issue exploded in 2019 after Bale celebrated Wales’ qualification for Euro 2020 by standing behind a flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”

Despite his heroics in the Champions League final in 2018, Bale’s role had already been significantly reduced that season under Zidane and his influence continued to dwindle even as new coaches like Julen Lopetegui, Santiago Solari, Zidane again, and most recently, Carlo Ancelotti, took charge.

Last season, Bale played only five times in La Liga and seven minutes in the Champions League, again saving his best for Wales, as he scored a hat-trick against Belarus in September and then twice against Austria in March to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

  • Man United confirm Pogba’s exit

    Man United confirm Pogba’s exit

French World Cup-winning midfielder, Paul Pogba, is to leave Manchester United at the end of June, the club said Wednesday, bringing the curtain down on a largely disappointing second spell.

The 29-year-old’s departure at the end of his contract will see United recoup none of the then record £89 million ($112 million) he cost them when they bought him from Juventus in 2016.

However, new United manager Erik ten Hag has clearly decided Pogba’s chances at the club have come and gone.

A second spell at Juventus — where he won four Serie A titles — may well be on Pogba’s menu as Italian media have suggested he has given a verbal agreement to return and accepted a lower salary.

Ten Hag wishes to refresh a side that has seen their city rivals Manchester City become the powerhouse they once were under Alex Ferguson. United have rarely threatened to repeat those days since he retired in 2013.French champions Paris Saint-Germain have also been mentioned as a possibility as they are due for an overhaul and built round his fellow World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe.

Pogba flourished initially under Jose Mourinho — who also brought in the since departed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku – and was part of the sides that won the League Cup and Europa League in 2017.

His subsequent performances rarely matched those he produced for France in their 2018 World Cup campaign.

He did show glimpses of his abundant talent especially in their run to the 2021 Europa League final — scoring goals against AC Milan and Roma in the knockout stages.

However, he was then anonymous in the final as United lost to Villarreal on penalties.

Fitness problems limited him to 27 appearances last season in an unimpressive campaign for both player and club as United had to be content with a Europa League spot.

The fans had lost patience with his inconsistent displays and booed him off the pitch when he was substituted in a victory over Norwich in April.

“The club can announce that Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United at the end of June, upon the expiry of his contract,” read the club statement.

“The last of his 233 United games ended in the 10th minute of a defeat at Anfield in April 2022.

“It was a low-key end to a United career that brought so many individual high moments.

“So many beautiful goals, assists and pieces of skill.

“For a boy that joined the Academy at 16 to make over 200 United appearances and lift the Youth Cup, along with two major pieces of silverware, is something that should be applauded and celebrated.”

  • Buhari Approves House Allocation to 1994 AFCON Winning Super Eagles

Buhari Approves House Allocation to 1994 AFCON Winning Super Eagles

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the allocation of houses for the 1994 African Nations Cup winning Super Eagles.

President Buhari made the disclosure Thursday in Jalingo during the inauguration of one of the Housing Estates built by the federal government under the National Housing Programme.

The president noted that though it was not his administration that pledged to give houses to the players, the inauguration of the houses provides an opportunity to remember the heroes who made the country proud by winning the coveted trophy.

According to him, “The inauguration of the houses responds to those who have long aspired to own a home, and that dream has come true with this project. But there is more to our message of change and improving the human condition in these housing projects.

“They make possible, that which had seemed impossible. It provides an opportunity to remember our heroes, the valiant Super Eagles to whom our country made a promise of providing housing for winning the 1994 African Cup of Nations, which has remained unfulfilled.

“On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, I feel proud and privileged to redeem the promise Nigeria made to these patriotic Nigerians, even if belatedly.

“As the saying goes, it is better late than never and I have approved allocation to redeem the outstanding allocation to 22 members of the Super Eagles in National Housing Estate located in their state of choice, and their keys and title documents will be handed over at the inauguration in their state, while the remainder of the housing is allocated to willing members of the public.”

The president, who was represented by the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mr. Mu’azu Sambo Jaji, noted that when the All Progressives Congress (APC) sought the mandate of Nigerians to form the government in 2015, one of the things the party promised was change, stressing that the housing estate is an example of the fulfillment of that promise of change.

He however noted that the project wouldn’t have been possible without the support and cooperation of the Taraba State Government that provided land for its execution.

He reiterated that the project is a good example of some of the developmental possibilities that inter-governmental collaboration can produce, adding that he’s optimistic that with the provision of more land, the federal government certainly can do more.

He further stated that the housing estate has enhanced human development in several ways, particularly micro, small and medium size businesses.

“Those who drive our economy were the ones who won the contracts to build these houses. Not only did their successful bids offer an opportunity for these companies and their employees, through them we have unleashed a value chain of economic activities that improved the conditions of the ordinary Nigerians.

“They engaged suppliers who benefit from sub-contracts for the supply of building materials from sand to cement, roofing and plumbing material to doors and electrical fitting.

“In the process, the ordinary Nigerian at the bottom of the pyramid such as artisans, builders, skilled and unskilled workers and food vendors were not left out of this economic value chain.

“These are some of the people our country remains committed to move towards prosperity and away from poverty and we are already reaching them by providing opportunities for employment for those who were hitherto unemployed.

“We certainly cannot meet everyone of those Nigerians in person, but our economic policies and investment in infrastructure such as this National Housing Programme and others will reach and positively impact many of them.

“Our desire and commitment towards improving the human condition and our message of change have another facet beyond job creation,” he said.

Also speaking at the occasion, Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State reiterated his administration’s commitment to continue partnering with the federal government and other relevant agencies to improve the well being of the people of the state.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Anthony Jellason, the governor expressed appreciation to President Buhari for the execution of the project, which according to him, would go a long way to alleviate the problem of housing shortage in the state capital.

Lewandoski named best footballer, Mo Salah second, Messi third

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is the best football player and Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp, the best coach, according to a survey among German Bundesliga players conducted by Kicker sports magazine.

Kicker said in its latest edition on Monday that Lewandowski garnered 43.2 per cent of the vote from 234 players polled.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah was a distant second with 20.5 per cent, and Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) third.

Klopp was first on the coaching list with 34.6 per cent.

He emerged winner ahead of fellow German Thomas Tuchel from 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea (24.8) and Spain’s Pep Guardiola from 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City.

Bundesliga players also rated the English top-flight the best league with a big majority of 67.9 per cent.

Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich meanwhile earned the dubious honour of being voted disappointment of the current season.

That result likely has to do with his coronavirus stance rather than his skills on the pitch.

Kimmich first voiced doubts about vaccination and has been sidelined since early November owing to two quarantine periods, a coronavirus infection and related lung problems.
