    Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, and the National Sports Commission, NSC, have unveiled the official mascot for the 2026 National Sports Festival, tagged “Coal City Games,” assuring that the state would deliver a competition that meets international standards.

    The mascot, named “Odum Eze, Lion King,” was unveiled by Mbah at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, at the weekend.

    Governor Mbah, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, said the choice of the lion was deliberate, noting that it represented Enugu State’s seat of power, while also symbolising strength, courage, leadership, and discipline.

    According to him, the same qualities would also be expected of participating athletes in the games, which will hold from November 27 to December 11, 2026.

    “We expect a sports festival that will be defined by integrity. We expect a sports festival that will depict Nigerian strength, courage, and utmost discipline.

    “We expect a sports festival that the media will write, after we have concluded, that we met world standards and surpassed all expectations,” he said.

    He, however, lamented that Nigeria, which once enjoyed a strong reputation in international sports, had lost ground and needed to return to a system that nurtured talents from the grassroots.

    The Governor, therefore, called on the NSC to pay greater attention to school sports as part of efforts to revive sports development and discover young talents across the country.

    Earlier, the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olapade, expressed excitement at Enugu’s hosting rights and preparations, as the state would become the second South-East state to host the National Sports Festival since Imo State hosted the event in 1998.

    Olapade, who described Enugu as his home state, said the hosting rights represented a significant development for the region and the state, noting that the festival had historically rotated largely between the South-West and South-South regions before Enugu emerged as the next host in the South-East.

    The NSC boss said an inspection of facilities in the state showed that Enugu was well prepared for the games, describing Enugu State’s security and the development of infrastructure as top-notch.

    “After the inspection yesterday, we came to the conclusion that Enugu is ready to take the National Sports Festival to unprecedented heights. We are very much impressed with what is going on in Enugu,” he stated.

    He, however, disclosed that some facilities, including the swimming pool and indoor sports hall, still required finishing touches, expressing confidence that they would be completed before the festival begins in November.

    Olapade announced that the Federal Government had also decided to support host states with sports infrastructure, rather than leave the responsibility entirely to state governments.

    He expressed optimism that the Coal City Games would set a new record for the National Sports Festival, describing it as the most highly sponsored edition in the history of the competition.

    “This is going to be the biggest and highest-sponsored sports festival in the history of Nigeria,” he declared.

    Speaking to newsmen, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, reiterated Dr. Peter Mbah’s determination to not only deliver a record-breaking festival in terms of facilities and organisation, but also to position Enugu State as the sports capital of Africa.

    “If you look at the rate and magnitude of work going on at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the Games Village at Awgu, and the infrastructure generally in the state, you would agree that Enugu State is preparing to host to win and to set new records in organisation and infrastructure,” he stated.

    Meanwhile, the official sponsor of the 2026 NSF, Premium Trust Bank, has reiterated its commitment to the Coal City Games and sports development in the country.

    Represented by the Chief Business Officer, South-South, of Premium Trust Bank, Aniebet Offiong, the bank said it was excited to partner with Enugu State and the NSC to deliver a memorable NSF come November and December.

    Also at the mascot-unveiling event were the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel; President, Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode; and the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, among a host of others.

    Hull City produced a stunning upset on Saturday as they defeated Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium in their opening Premier League fixture of the 2026/27 season.

    The newly promoted side secured all three points through first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, leaving United with a disappointing start to the new campaign.

    Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Hull capitalised on a set-piece opportunity, before Mendy doubled the advantage 21 minutes later to put the hosts firmly in control.

    Manchester United dominated possession for large periods but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined Hull defence. The home side remained organised at the back and frustrated United’s attacking players throughout the encounter.

    Enugu State

    The defeat represents a major setback for United manager Michael Carrick, who had hoped to begin the campaign with a positive result. Despite efforts to change the game in the second half, including the introduction of Marcus Rashford, the visitors could not find a way back into the contest.

    For Hull, the victory marked a memorable return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence and a historic league win over Manchester United.

    United will now look to quickly recover from the shock defeat, while Hull will take confidence from one of the biggest results of their recent return to England’s top flight.

  • Arsenal confirm players’ jersey numbers for 2026/27 EPL season

    Arsenal have confirmed their squad numbers for the 2026/27 English Premier League season, with new signings Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier assigned shirt numbers.

    The club announced the numbers on its website on Tuesday, following changes to the squad ahead of the new campaign.

    “Ahead of the 2026/27 season, we have seen some new faces arrive while other members of our title-winning squad have left for pastures new.

    “That has led to some rejigging of our squad numbers, with some left vacant while others have stepped in to add to each shirt’s history,” Arsenal said.

    Guimaraes will wear the No. 39 shirt, a number he has used throughout his career in tribute to his father, whose taxi carried the same number when he worked in Brazil.

    Tzolis has been handed the No. 17 shirt, previously worn by Oleksandr Zinchenko and made famous at Arsenal by Alexis Sanchez and Emmanuel Petit.

    Meslier will wear No. 30, last worn by Raheem Sterling during the 2024/25 season and previously worn by Eddie Nketiah and Yossi Benayoun.

    Arsenal said the departures of Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Leandro Trossard had left Nos. 15, 16 and 19 vacant, while No. 18 was also available.

    The club added that Nos. 25, 26, 27 and 28 had also been vacant for the past couple of seasons.

    Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as France’s new head coach, replacing Didier Deschamps at the helm of the team he led to glory as arguably their greatest ever player.

    The French football federation president, Philippe Diallo, announced Zidane’s appointment at the FFF headquarters in Paris on Tuesday, saying he has been given a four-year contract.

    “This is an exceptional moment, exceptional because of the person sat next to me,” Diallo said. “Zinedine is one of the legends of French soccer and for many years he said one of his dreams was to take charge of the France team.”

    The 54-year-old Zidane has not coached since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. “For me it’s a continuity, a dream,” he said. “I had some offers during the five years I was away to take charge of a club but I turned them all down for the France team. It was the only thing I wanted to do.”

    Zidane called it “an immense joy” to take charge of the team he starred for. “I have so many emotions, I am ready for the challenge,” he said. “That’s what motivates me.”

    Zidane praised Deschamps, who won the 2018 World Cup and stepped down after the recent tournament, where Les Bleus lost in the semi-finals to Spain.

    “Today I have the opportunity to be in charge of this team and I will give everything so that this team can win,” Zidane said.

    “I would also like to congratulate DD for these remarkable years.”

    Diallo said he met Zidane for talks in February 2025 after Deschamps said he would stand down after the 2026 World Cup.

    “What motivates me is the game, I was a No 10, I like goals,” Zidane said. “I was a leader on the field and now I want to be a leader by experience.”

    Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has admitted that it breaks his heart after losing the World Cup final to Spain on Sunday.

    Scaloni, who also apologized over the outcome of the match, was speaking about his future with the Albiceleste.

    The 48-year-old ⁠was appointed manager after Argentina ⁠crashed out of the 2018 World Cup in the round of 16 amid scepticism about his lack of head coaching experience and only brief time as an assistant.

    If he does move on after his contract expires in December, he will ⁠leave the post as the most decorated manager in the country’s history. Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final followed a run to the title in the 2022 tournament, and he also guided Argentina to the Copa America crown in 2021 and 2024.

    “I will talk to the president” of ⁠the federation, Scaloni said through an interpreter.

    “I feel the need to think because I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do something as big as this,” Scaloni said at his post-match interview.

    “I never imagined I’d be here. To move forward, a lot of things are needed. Above all, we need to reset. It breaks my heart. I’m sorry.”

    Argentina lost 1-0 against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, following Ferran Torres’s goal in extra time.

    Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final not only secured football’s biggest prize but also earned the country’s football federation a record-breaking financial reward.

    FIFA has confirmed that the champions will receive $51 million in prize money, while runners-up Argentina will take home $34 million, as part of the governing body’s record $871 million prize fund for the expanded 48-team tournament.

    The 2026 edition, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, features the largest prize pool in World Cup history after FIFA increased the total payout earlier this year by more than $100 million.

    The additional funding came after several European football federations sought financial support to offset the higher travel and accommodation costs associated with hosting the tournament across three countries.

    The $51 million awarded to Spain surpasses the $42 million Argentina received for winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, it remains below the prize money earned by the winners of last year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

    All 48 participating nations receive financial support from FIFA in two forms: prize money based on tournament performance and payments to cover preparation costs.

    Each federation earned a guaranteed $12.5 million for participating, comprising $10 million for qualifying and competing in the group stage, plus $2.5 million to cover pre-tournament training and expenses.

    The guaranteed preparation payment was introduced to help avoid disputes between players and national federations over bonuses before the tournament.

    Prize money then increases depending on how far a team progresses through the competition.

    • Third place (England): $30 million
    • Fourth place (France): $28 million
    • Quarter-finalists: $20 million each
    • Round of 16: $16 million each

    The increase in prize money follows calls from several national federations, particularly in Europe, which argued that the original payment structure would leave many associations out of pocket because of the extensive travel required during the tournament.

    Teams playing matches in the United States also faced tax obligations that do not apply in Canada and Mexico, adding to overall costs.

    Travel and accommodation

    Beyond prize money, FIFA also pays for business-class return flights for each participating delegation, along with accommodation and meals for a 50-member delegation from five days before a team’s opening match until one day after elimination.

    The governing body also covers domestic transport during the tournament, including a fleet of official vehicles and an equipment truck.

    National federations remain responsible for insurance covering players and staff, incidental hotel expenses and accommodation for any additional delegation members beyond the allocated 50.

    The World Cup prize money is paid directly to each national football federation rather than the players.

    Argentina sealed a dramatic semifinal fightback against England at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with two goals in the final five minutes to clinch a 2-1 win and book a World Cup final clash with Spain on Sunday.

    The reigning world champions, who won their third title in Qatar four years ago, looked set to be eliminated with England leading well into the dying stages following a second-half goal from Anthony Gordon.
    But Enzo Fernández levelled the scores with a stunning shot from 20 yards in the 85th minute before Lionel Messi’s cross to the far post was met by substitute Lautaro Martínez, who headed the winning goal into the net from close range in the second minute of stoppage time.

    With their grip on the World Cup loosening, Argentina dominated as they poured forward in search of an equalizer.
    Lionel Scaloni’s side were frustrated by poor finishing and the heroics of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who made two crucial saves to keep the Three Lions ahead.Pickford’s first save was a world-class effort to keep out Nico Gonzalez in the 69th minute after after the Argentina midfielder had connected with Messi’s pinpoint cross.And Everton number one Pickford was the hero again seven minutes later when saved from Alexis Mac Allister, moments after the Liverpool player had struck the post with another effort.

    But Pickford could do nothing on 86 minutes when Enzo Fernández levelled the scores with a stunning shot from 20 yards.

    And after Mac Allister stuck the post again in the 90th minute, Lionel Messi’s cross to the far post was met by substitute Lautaro Martínez, who headed the winning goal into the net from close range.

  • World Cup: Spain Beat France 2-0 to Reach Final

     

    Spain booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating France 2-0 in the first semi-final at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday.

    Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled much of the contest and took the lead in the first half after Lucas Digne brought down Lamine Yamal inside the penalty area. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the resulting spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way to give La Roja the advantage.

    France’s problems deepened before the break when defender William Saliba was forced off with an injury and replaced by Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix in the 30th minute.

    Spain doubled their lead in the second half as Pedro Porro combined with Dani Olmo before finishing calmly past Maignan to put the match beyond France.

    Yamal appeared to have added a third goal, but the effort was ruled out after a VAR review found him to be offside.

    The victory sends Spain into Sunday’s World Cup final, where they will face the winners of the second semi-final between England and Argentina.

    ​Spain on Friday qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup following a 2-1 win over Belgium in a game played at the Los Angeles Stadium.

    ​Luis de la Fuente’s men opened the scoring in the quarter-final encounter through Fabián Ruiz in the 30th minute.

    ​Dani Olmo’s effort was parried away by Thibaut Courtois, but it went straight to the feet of Ruiz, who was there to slam it home, although it took a slight deflection off Timothy Castagne.

    ​Belgium, however, levelled the score in the 41st minute after a cross into the box from Castagne allowed Charles De Ketelaere to get across Pau Cubarsí brilliantly and head home the equaliser.

    ​In the second half, substitute Mikel Merino scored Spain’s second goal after goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold onto a 25-yard strike from Cubarsí.

    ​With the narrow victory, Spain will now face France in the last-four tie of the tournament on Tuesday, 14 July.

    Morocco down Netherlands to reach World Cup last 16

    Morocco defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup on Monday after a thrilling battle in Monterrey finished 1-1 after extra-time.

    Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made the crucial save to block the Netherlands’ fifth penalty from Crysencio Summerville before striker Ismael Saibari stepped up to blast home the winning spot-kick that sealed a 3-2 shootout win.

    The victory sends Morocco into a last 16 clash with Canada in Houston on Saturday.

    An enthralling match had gone to extra time after Issa Diop had glanced in a dramatic equaliser for Morocco in the first minute of stoppage time as the Netherlands closed in on victory.

    The Dutch had taken the lead midway through the second half with a goal from Cody Gakpo, playing just days after his partner had confirmed the death of the couple’s unborn son.

    Liverpool forward Gakpo sank to the turf and appeared overcome with emotion as he was surrounded by team-mates in a prolonged group embrace.

    But Morocco forced extra time when an unmarked Diop headed home from substitute Chemsdine Talbi’s cross in injury time.

    Morocco had created the better chances of a fractious encounter, which saw players from both sides flying into tackles to test the patience of Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio.

    The Atlas Lions almost took the lead on 20 minutes when Neil al-Aynaoui glanced an Achraf Hakimi corner goalwards only to be denied by a superb reflex save from Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

    Verbruggen was pressed into action moments later, this time doing well to tip a vicious strike from Hakimi over the bar.

    The fierce nature of the contest was on full display midway through the half when Saibari was lucky to escape sanction after elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke in the face.

    The Dutch continued to enjoy plenty of possession but were unable to convert it into goalscoring chances.

    Their best effort came on 44 minutes when Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven uncorked a ferocious shot from the edge of the area that was tipped over by Bounou.

    Van Hecke continued to find himself in the thick of the action, and after bloodying his head in a collision in the penalty area, made his presence felt with a crunching tackle that upended el-Aynaoui just before half-time.

    As the half ended Saibari just failed to connect with a cross that flashed across the Dutch goal before going behind.

    The drama continued into an end-to-end second half, but appeared to have tilted in the Netherlands’ favour when coach Ronald Koeman brought on forward Wout Weghorst in a flurry of substitutions after the hydration break.

    Weghorst made an immediate impact flicking on a long ball to send Summerville bearing in on goal. Summerville crossed to Gakpo, who hurled himself at the ball to score.

    The Netherlands, superbly marshalled by Gakpo’s Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk, appeared to be heading for victory but Diop’s late header sent it to extra-time.

    Morocco looked to have made the breakthrough when Soufiane Rahimi went through on goal in the 96th minute, only to be denied by a jaw-dropping save from Verbruggen.

    The Netherlands held on for penalties but despite Morocco missing their first when El-Aynaoui hit the bar, the north Africans recovered to win.

    Lionel Messi became the World Cup’s joint-top all-time scorer with a hat-trick as reigning champions Argentina began their defence with a statement victory over Algeria.

    Making his 200th appearance for his country, Messi scored his first treble at a World Cup.

    And it created a piece of history, as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner took his World Cup finals goal tally to 16 – moving him level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the all-time leading scorer in the competition’s history.

    The three-time world champions were made to work for victory at the Kansas City Stadium as they aim to become only the third nation to successfully defend the World Cup.

    It was the first time Argentina had won their opening match at a World Cup as defending champions, having suffered defeats in 1982 and 1990.

    That was down to the brilliance of Messi, who curled home a wonderful opener in the 17th minute.

    The 38-year-old collected the ball from Inter Miami team-mate Rodrigo De Paul before bending a strike past Luca Zidane – the son of France legend Zinedine Zidane – on his 27th World Cup appearance.

    His goal arrived 12 minutes after an earlier effort had been disallowed during a breathless start, with Algeria also having a strike ruled out three minutes later as the game burst into life right from the off.

    But on a night when he became the first player to appear in six World Cups, Messi was lucky to escape punishment for reckless challenge on Algeria’s Aissa Mandi midway through the first half.

    Argentina’s second came from close range on the hour mark when Messi pounced on a mistake from Zidane, before he sealed a first World Cup treble in the 76th minute when he arrowed home a thunderous strike from the edge of the area after taking the ball from Nicolas Gonzalez.

    Having made a winning start in Group J, Argentina next face matches against Austria and Jordan.

    If anyone was questioning why Messi did not hang up his international boots after winning the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, he delivered an emphatic answer here.

    A week out from his 39th birthday, he rolled back the years with a sensational display, claiming yet another record from long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo by becoming the oldest player to score a hat-trick at a World Cup.

    Much had been made of Messi’s decision to continue his international career after leading Argentina to the summit of world football four years ago. But this performance proved he is not in the United States to make up the numbers this summer – he is determined to help Argentina to secure a fourth World Cup success.

    After drawing level with Klose as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer, few would bet against Messi claiming that record outright by the time the final whistle blows in Argentina’s next match against Austria.

    Once again, it will be all eyes on the Argentine superstar on Monday.

    Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has gifted players and management of Rangers International Football Club with plots of land and the sum of N150 million for winning the 2025/2026 NPFL title.

    Mbah announced the gifts during a dinner reception he hosted in honour of the players, technical crew and management of the team at Government House, Enugu, on Tuesday night.

    Rangers FC won the league for a record-equaling ninth time and also for a second time in three years under the Mbah Administration following a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City Boys in Lagos on May 24, 2026.

    Speaking at the event, Mbah likened the reception to welcoming home a child who had excelled academically, saying the government and people of Enugu State were delighted to celebrate the team’s success.

    “We are providing you with a cash gift of N100 million for the players and N50 million for the technical and management crew.

    “In addition to that, we have approved a plot of land in Enugu for every player, while additional plots will be allocated to the General Manager, Head Coach, Secretary and Assistant Coach,” Mbah said.

    The governor noted that Rangers was more than a football club, describing it as a symbol of resilience, unity, hope and social renewal established in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War.

    According to him, the club carries a rich history and legacy associated with football legends such as the late Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala and Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha.

    He commended the players, coaches and management for their hard work, sacrifices and discipline throughout the season, noting that the trophy was the product of countless acts of determination and effort.

    Mbah also praised Rangers General Manager, Amobi Ezeaku, for his leadership, resilience and commitment, saying the qualities required to build a successful football club were similar to those needed to build a successful state.

    The governor assured the team of continued government support, stressing that sports remained a key component of his administration’s development agenda.

    He also stated that renovation works at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as “The Cathedral,” would be completed in time and to international standards for Rangers’ continental matches.

    He added that Enugu State, under his leadership, would continue to invest heavily in sports infrastructure and development, noting that the state would host the 2026 National Sports Festival in a manner that would leave lasting marks in the sands of time.

    Mbah, however, identified complacency as an enemy of success, urging the team not to rest on their laurels and well-deserved accolades.

    “So, brace up, fight on, keep winning and ensure you bring the continental trophy home,” he concluded.

    Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, thanked the governor for hosting the champions and for his sustained investment in sports development.

    Ekweremadu described the league triumph as a testament to the governor’s commitment to excellence and service delivery across sectors.

    The commissioner recalled that Enugu State emerged overall winner of the National Para Games in March with 55 medals comprising 40 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals.

    Responding, Ezeaku noted that success was built on discipline, preparation and ambition, drawing inspiration from renowned philosophers such as Aristotle, Seneca and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
    He emphasised that the celebration extended beyond the lifting of a trophy and represented a celebration of leadership, vision and the power of unity among government, management, players and supporters.

    The General Manager expressed profound gratitude to Governor Mbah for his unwavering support of the club, stating that Rangers had enjoyed one of its most successful periods in recent history under the governor’s administration.

    According to him, Rangers has won two NPFL titles within three years of Governor Mbah’s tenure, a feat he described as remarkable in contemporary Nigerian football.

    “This is credited to the governor’s commitment to sports development, youth empowerment and excellence, helping to restore the club’s competitive edge,” he said.

    The club also highlighted the governor’s broader achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, technology and economic development, while stressing that his contribution to sports deserves equal recognition.

    Reflecting on the club’s title-winning campaign, Ezeaku revealed that the journey was marked by intense competition, with rival clubs reportedly receiving promises of substantial incentives, including cash rewards, vehicles and landed properties.

    “Despite these developments, the club maintained focus and confidence, believing that hard work and excellence would ultimately be rewarded.

    “We remained resolute and focused throughout the season. Our confidence came from our belief in the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah and our conviction that sacrifice and excellence would not go unnoticed,” he stated.

    Looking beyond domestic success, he declared Rangers’ intention to compete among Africa’s elite clubs and challenged stakeholders to support the club’s continental ambitions.

    The general manager described Rangers as one of Africa’s historic football brands with the fan base, identity and pedigree to compete successfully at the highest level.

    He expressed confidence that with strategic investment and continued government support, Rangers could one day lift the CAF Champions League trophy and bring continental glory back to Nigeria.

    “Every great achievement begins as a dream. Today, we dream of Rangers defeating Africa’s biggest clubs and bringing the CAF Champions League trophy to Enugu,” the management said.

    Meanwhile, Rangers FC and their fans had earlier celebrated their NPFL win at Okpara Square and paraded their trophy through the capital city with much jubilation and fanfare before retiring to Government House for the dinner reception and presentation of the trophy to the governor.
