Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has admitted that it breaks his heart after losing the World Cup final to Spain on Sunday.
Scaloni, who also apologized over the outcome of the match, was speaking about his future with the Albiceleste.
The 48-year-old was appointed manager after Argentina crashed out of the 2018 World Cup in the round of 16 amid scepticism about his lack of head coaching experience and only brief time as an assistant.
If he does move on after his contract expires in December, he will leave the post as the most decorated manager in the country’s history. Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final followed a run to the title in the 2022 tournament, and he also guided Argentina to the Copa America crown in 2021 and 2024.
“I will talk to the president” of the federation, Scaloni said through an interpreter.
“I feel the need to think because I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do something as big as this,” Scaloni said at his post-match interview.
“I never imagined I’d be here. To move forward, a lot of things are needed. Above all, we need to reset. It breaks my heart. I’m sorry.”
Argentina lost 1-0 against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, following Ferran Torres’s goal in extra time.
