“Journey to Nigeria’s Rebirth Begins Today”; Remarks by Peter Obi During the presentation of Running Mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed

Journey to Nigeria’s Rebirth Begins Today

Remarks by H.E Mr. Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party

During the presentation of Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed

As His Vice Presidential Running Mate

At the Transcorps Hilton Hotel, Abuja, 8 July 2022

I thank all those gathered here today. They will bear witness and lay claim to being present on the day when the Journey to Nigeria’s Rebirth Began.

It is my honour to inform you, my fellow Nigerians and especially the OBIdients, that finally, after very long and wide consultations, we in the Labour Party have a found an eminently qualified Nigerian, who will be my partner as we embark on our march to a Secure, United and Productive Nigeria.

I have the distinct honour of presenting to you, my friend and running mate, and God willing, the next Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who has been described as “one of Nigeria’s youngest and brightest personalities, who has distinguished himself in various areas of human endeavours.”

Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed brings to this mission, great personal, academic and entrepreneurial strengths; impeccable credentials and the added value of rich experience as an academician, businessman, public servant, economic and development expert, and politician. He is a recognized wealth creator and manager; who fits well into the mold of a transformative and adaptive leader.

Today, I will not dwell too much our national challenges. Yet, I will be remiss to gloss over them completely. These are extremely difficult times for our country. Nigeria straddles the lowest rungs of the global development indices. We are hugely indebted and the poverty capital of the world. Nigerians are hungry and angry; and fed up with bad leadership. Times like this, does not call for politics of business as usual.

As I have always said, my vision and mission is to give full expression to our democracy by moving our country from consumption to production. Now that the presidential team is complete, we will in the days ahead, unveil our governance principles, priorities, and programmes for turning Nigeria around, which shall be anchored on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Securing, uniting and making Nigeria productive require steady and trusted hands. I am confident that with Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed by my side, we shall ensure that in moving Nigeria forward, no state or community will be left behind. Pursuant to its statutory responsibility to protect, our Government will promote the rule of law, ensure that governance is inclusive, cost-effective, transformative, less transactional; and national investments regenerative.

Finally, with human capital development as the core premise, we will pursue proactively, well-articulated strategies and intrusive policy coordination and implementation, aimed at tackling the key challenges that are routinely of utmost concern to domestic and foreign investors.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me immense pleasure to present to you, my friend and running mate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. I will now yield the floor to him for his remarks. I thank you all.

  • Press Release- RE: Status of the State Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

Press Release- RE: Status of the State Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

Press Release- RE: Status of the State Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at its meeting held on June 30, 2022 considered the matter of the status of the Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of the Party and made the following findings and decisions:

The recent judgment of the Supreme Court in All Progressives Congress (APC) vs. Evan Enwerem & Ors. (SC/CV/884/2020) has been subject of various interpretations regarding the status of the Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of APC. It has become imperative to clarify the situation in order to avoid further controversy in the matter.

The NWC has determined that the MacDonald Ebere-led Executive Committee of the Imo State Chapter of the Party is the legitimate and duly recognized Executive Committee of the Party in the State.

In its judgment, the Supreme Court held that the trial court lacked territorial jurisdiction and was therefore incompetent to adjudicate on the original suit in the matter. On page 25, of its lead judgment, the Supreme Court held that:

“Avoiding the High Court of the State in which the events occurred as done by the 1st Respondent in this Appeal, to file a suit in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in which none of the events giving rise to the suit occurred, amounts to forum shopping and a gross abuse of court process.

“Consequently, the trial Court lacked the territorial jurisdictional competence to have entertained the suit in the first place, hence rendering the decision a nullity.”

Further, the Supreme Court held at page 27 of its judgement that:

“In the final analysis, I find no merit in this appeal. Same is hereby dismissed. The suit together with the processes filed right from the trial court are hereby struck out.”

The effect of the Supreme Court decision is clearly a return to status quo, as though the suit never existed.

By the authority of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party, the Executive Committees of all State Chapters of the Party (including Imo State) were dissolved on December 8, 2020, and Caretaker Committees were duly constituted in place of the Executive Committees.

In 2021, the Party conducted its Ward, Local Government and State Congresses nationwide, including in Imo State, leading to the emergence of new State Executive Committees that were duly inaugurated by the Party.

On record, there was no court order or injunction restraining the conduct of Congresses in Imo State, and Daniel Nwafor did not participate in the State Congress.

In the light of the above, the NWC has determined that Daniel Nwafor-led Executive Committee’s tenure was effectively ended by NEC pursuant to the exercise of its authority under Article 13.3 of the Party’s Constitution as previously stated.

For the avoidance of doubt, the incumbent State Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of MacDonald Ebere is and remains the legal, legitimate and duly recognized Executive Committee of APC in Imo State.

Press Release: I Never Attacked Peter Obi- Ekweremadu

Press Release: I Never Attacked Peter Obi- Ekweremadu

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, says at no time did he attack the former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, asking the public to discountenance such reports as the work of mischief-makers, who deliberately twisted his innocuous statement out of context.

Ekweremadu said he had no reason whatsoever to attack Obi’s ambition, noting that they enjoyed good relationship as brothers and friends, who were both entitled to the political opinions and pursuits.

He was reacting to a news story, which he said that Ndigbo “would never vote for Peter Obi”, describing it as political mischief.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to the work of mischief makers, who claimed that I attacked my friend and brother, Mr. Peter Obi, over his presidential ambition. This is far from the truth, as there was no reason to do so in the first place. We are both adults and entitled to our respective political pursuits and inclinations.

“I have also read a statement by one Ugwuoke Ibem Ugwuoke, gloating over the unfortunate attack on my person when I spent several days in Germany a few years ago at my personal cost to meet with several foreign investors for the betterment of Igboland at the invitation of Ndigbo in Germany and with the full knowledge of several Igbo Governors and leaders.

“I have also read his wild insinuations and misrepresentations of my person over my political dispositions, when in actual sense I have stuck out my neck in defence of Igbo interest on a good number of occasions.

“Where was he when in 2007 I led South East Senators to negotiate the release of the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike from detention?

“Where was he when I took the necessary steps, including galvernising the South East Senate Caucus and notable Ndigbo to see to the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu?

“Where was he was when I was the only Igbo man to do an open and well-publicised letter, “Rising Tension in the South East: Re: Appeal to Call Off Operation Egwu Eke”, dated 14th September 2017, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to end the Python Dance after my quiet interventions failed?

“Where was he when I galvernised the South East Caucus of the National Assembly yet again towards finding political solution to the current incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and also led some Igbo leaders, including former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ambassador Okey Emuchay; and Co-Chair, Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, to meet with him in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS) in January 2022?

“I urge Ndigbo and Nigerians to be very discerning and reticent in political seasons like this when many are out to do mischief and make political capital out of every situation at all cost”.

Ekweremadu, however, said he was happy that most Ndigbo and leaders appreciate his quiet efforts, adding that he would never be discouraged by the ingratitude and mischief of a few.

A statement made available to our Enugu correspondent and signed by Dan Nwomeh on behalf of the office, referred to the story as “false, wicked and evil”.

The press statement titled “Fake news on the assassination of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah” urged the masterminds to play politics of moderation and sportsmanship.

It reads “We have been inundated with calls over a fake news in circulation on some social media platforms on the purported assassination of the Enugu State PDP governorship flagbearer, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

“The story is false, wicked and evil.

“Our investigations indicate that the story was doctored from the video of the unfortunate gruesome assassination of one Dr. Ndubuisi (real name: Professor Samuel Ndubuisi), the Director General of the Science and Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), along the Enugu Port Harcourt expressway, one year ago.

  • Press Release: “I won’t disappoint Enugu”, says Ekweremadu as Enugu West royal fathers endorse him

Press Release: “I won’t disappoint Enugu”, says Ekweremadu as Enugu West royal fathers endorse him

    By Uche Anichukwu

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has vowed not to disappoint the people of Enugu State if elected their governor in 2023.

Ekweremadu gave the assurances when he received traditional rulers of Enugu West Senatorial District, his constituency, who paid him a solidarity visit at his Enugu residence.

This came as the royal fathers gave him their royal blessings and the “Ofo”, which symbolises authority, truth, and justice, describing him as a tested and trusted leader.

Taking them through his agenda, “A Pathway to a New Enugu State”, the Senator said time was ripe to apply the experience, friendship, partnership, and global contact he acquired over the years through the opportunities given to him by Enugu people to the transformation of Enugu to a model state.

“At this point, therefore, I believe it is time to focus on Enugu State and Enugu people without whom I would not be who and what I am today.

“We want to industrialise Enugu State by building at least two industries in each of the 17 local government in four years and through what we call ‘One Local government, One Product’, according to comparative advantages.

“We want to develop our road infrastructure by building well-lit super highways from Enugu city to our borders with Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, and Abia and also construct a ringroad to connect all local government areas in the state. We already have people in the United Kingdom ready to assist us if elected.

“We want to deploy technology and employment to fight insecurity by providing digital security network, by setting up an efficient state-funded security outfit that can respond to an emergency in 10 minutes, by creating an Enugu State Identity Database, and setting up a Security and Public Safety Coordination Centre.

“We have developed short, medium, and long term workable plans to ensure that water scarcity becomes a thing of the past in Enugu. We want to build dams and rehabilitate existing water sources and pipelines. There are both local and international contacts who have committed to helping us in regard.

“We want to ensure that there is a functional primary healthcare facility for every community, a state-of-the-art secondary healthcare facility for every local government, and also transform the ESUT University Teaching Hospital to a world-class tertiary healthcare facility.

“In the area of education, we are going to consolidate the primary and secondary schools, transform ESUT, and upgrade the Institute of Management and Techonology (IMT) to an Ivy League university”.

To ensure good governance, Ekweremadu said he wants to enthrone an open and consultative government, timely payment of salaries and retirement benefits, equal treatment to all, independent and efficient legislature and judiciary as well as a 24-hour service provision through a well-designed e-government, while also ensuring non-interference with local government funds.

The Senator promised to reduce youth unemployment by 70% in four years, create an enabling environment for the youths to thrive in the private sector, and also create jobs for the youths in tourism, agriculture, industry, Information Communication Technology (ICT), among others, while mainstreaming them in governance.

He equally unveiled plans for tourism development, agricultural development, and energy sufficiency through statewide power coverage, deploying renewable energy and mini-grids.

Speaking, the leader of the delegation and the traditional ruler of Amandim-Olo, HRH Igwe Harford Agana, commended Ekweremadu for all he had done in terms of physical and human capital development across the senatorial districts of Enugu State.

“You attracted roads across the three senatorial districts. You have done water projects across senatorial districts and your scholarships cut across senatorial districts. So, we are here to show solidarity and offer our royal blessings and prayers to you and your family”, Agana stated.

The high point of the event was the presentation of Ofo, the Igbo symbol of authority, truth, and justice to the former Deputy Senate President.

Press Release: Ohanaeze describes Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest as illegal, asks FG to release him

Ohanaeze Ndigbo youths also demanded that they be given a level playing field, and empowered economically like their counterparts in other part of the country.

THIS NATION MUST NOT FALL – OHANAEZE NDIGBO YOUTH

    Dear Nigerians,

Events in the past years has greatly challenged our resolve to continually weigh in; Igbo youths are buffeted with perennial failure of our leaders to arrest the social economic drift, which unfortunately has placed the collective future of NIGERIA YOUTHs on the slab.

We are alarmed that since the advent of our nascent democracy, successive leaders has learnt no useful lessons from our malady.

Though nation-building and nation branding policies are in principle available to all countries, we assert that the opportunities and potential benefits of such strategies strongly depend on countries’ historical, demographic, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions.

Nigeria with colonial legacies, and a profoundly heterogeneous society, and weak economic foundations, it is pertinent to identify a home grown solution in halting this drift.

Nigeria, is unfortunately at the precipice; citizens are now at the mercy of economic buccaneers whose sole purpose is to engineer clash and divert our attention from the realities of our time.

There is a paradox at the heart of the contemporary Igbo youths, who rightly feels alienated and bewildered over the lack of clarity of vision. It is on this premise that NDIGBO YOUTHS Worldwide, under the dynamic leadership of Engr Damian Okafor, demand in following order.

    (1) That the President of the federal republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Mohammadu Buhari. GCFR, rejig his administration’s security architecture to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians, and also bridge the gap between the leaders and the led.

    (2) That the federal government, should immediately declare a state of emergency to deplorable south east roads, which has turned a death trap.

    (3) That Ndigbo Youth, should be given a level playing field, and empowered economically like their counterparts in other part of the country so as to enable us discharge our civic duties, and expedite action on the release of 19 Igbo youths who are being persecuted on Trump up charges.

    (4) That the illegal detention of our brother and son Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, be revisited and subsequently released with immediate effect.

    (5) That the south east governors should put every mechanisms in place to encourage Ndigbo Youths, to fully take charge of the operational runnings of our local security outfit, known as EBUBE AGU.
