  • Tinubu Pledges to Curb Medical Brain Drain, Calls for Diaspora Doctors’ Return

    President Bola Tinubu has pledged to intensify efforts to stem the migration of Nigerian medical professionals abroad, saying the Federal Government will work to encourage them to return and serve the country.

    Tinubu also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening disease surveillance and regional collaboration to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including Ebola, amid the ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain in parts of Africa.

    The President spoke on Monday in Abuja through the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, at the opening and induction ceremony of the 50th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West African College of Physicians, marking the college’s golden jubilee.

    “We will work hard to stem the trend of Japa so that we have the people coming back to serve in our region,” Tinubu said, referring to the migration of skilled professionals in search of better working conditions and opportunities abroad.

    The President said the government had prioritised the recruitment, retention, welfare and training of healthcare workers, adding that more than 30,000 health professionals had been recruited into federal health facilities over the preceding two and a half years.

    He said the administration had also supported the training of thousands of frontline health workers, strengthened specialist medical institutions and doubled quotas for medical education as part of efforts to address the country’s health workforce needs.

    The pledge comes amid persistent concerns over the migration of Nigerian doctors and other health professionals, which has placed additional pressure on an already stretched healthcare system. Inadequate remuneration, poor working conditions, limited training opportunities and concerns about career progression have featured prominently in discussions about the exodus.

    Beyond increasing the number of trained professionals, health experts have repeatedly stressed the need to improve working conditions and provide incentives that would make remaining in Nigeria or returning from abroad more attractive.

    Tinubu said the government was pursuing reforms to improve healthcare infrastructure, expand health insurance coverage and strengthen primary healthcare delivery.

    “We firmly believe that quality healthcare is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a fundamental right that should be accessible to every resident of Nigeria,” he said.

    According to him, the government has invested in constructing, rehabilitating and equipping health facilities, while efforts are ongoing to modernise tertiary hospitals and revitalise primary healthcare centres.

    He added that direct financing for primary healthcare facilities through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund was being strengthened to improve service delivery.

    The President also said the government was leveraging digital innovation to improve patient records, disease surveillance and data-driven decision-making.

    On the Ebola outbreak, Tinubu said recent health emergencies had demonstrated that infectious diseases respected no national borders, requiring countries to strengthen their preparedness and coordinate responses.

    “Our collective safety depends on our ability to prepare, prevent, detect and respond rapidly to health threats,” he said.

    He said Nigeria remained committed to strengthening surveillance systems, laboratory networks, emergency preparedness structures and cross-border collaboration to detect and contain outbreaks before they escalated.

    Tinubu added that the government would continue investing in the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and other health security institutions to protect the population and contribute to regional and global health security.

    “The vision of an Ebola-free West Africa and an Ebola-free Africa is achievable,” he said, adding that this would require sustained political commitment, stronger institutions, adequate public health financing and cooperation among countries.

    Nigeria confirmed an imported case of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20, following the patient’s travel from Uganda. The development came amid a wider outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African countries.

    The World Health Organisation has called for sustained regional surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory capacity and infection prevention measures to limit further transmission. As of October 25, Nigeria’s response authorities continued to coordinate measures to contain the infection. The patient was subsequently medically evacuated to Switzerland on Monday after her clinical condition improved, according to the health minister.

    Tinubu said Nigeria was ready to work with the West African College of Physicians, the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and international development partners to strengthen regional health security.

    Turning to the role of professional institutions, the President said specialist medical training was indispensable to improving patient outcomes, advancing research and building resilient health systems.

    He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to working with the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to strengthen postgraduate medical education and develop the next generation of specialist physicians.

    Tinubu also urged the college to embrace innovation, including artificial intelligence, with appropriate safeguards, while investing in health professionals and strengthening partnerships.

    Earlier, the President of the West African College of Physicians, Dr Mamadou-Mourtalla Ka, said the college had spent five decades promoting excellence in postgraduate medical education, professional standards and healthcare delivery across the subregion.

    He said the college had trained and certified thousands of specialist physicians who had contributed to clinical practice, medical education, scientific research and health leadership across West Africa and beyond.

    Ka paid tribute to the institution’s founding fathers, past presidents, senior fellows, teachers and mentors, whose dedication helped establish and sustain the college.

    He, however, warned that the region continued to face considerable health challenges, including the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, persistent infectious diseases, inequalities in access to quality healthcare and increasing pressure on health systems.

    “Our response must include stronger postgraduate medical education, relevant scientific research, greater collaboration among our national chapters, and continued commitment to higher standards in professional practice,” he said.

    The college president also called for greater support for younger fellows and trainees, saying their development would be crucial to the institution’s future.

    In her remarks, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, represented the FCT administration at the event and emphasised the importance of a skilled and motivated medical workforce to national development.

    She called for increased investment in medical education, specialist training, research and digital health technologies, alongside improved welfare and retention of healthcare professionals.

    Mahmoud commended the college for providing a platform for physicians from Nigeria and other West African countries to exchange knowledge, share scientific innovations and develop solutions to common health challenges.

    She also urged the institution to expand opportunities for younger physicians, strengthen research and innovation, promote ethical medical practice and explore the use of artificial intelligence to improve clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery.

    The golden jubilee conference brought together physicians and other participants from across the subregion and beyond. Organisers reported 1,376 participants attending physically and virtually, including 657 fellows, 319 inductees into fellowship, 283 inductees into membership and 76 members, alongside accompanying persons.

    The programme also featured the induction of new members and fellows, as the college reflected on its achievements since its establishment in 1976 and considered priorities for the next 50 years. Punch

    A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed Nasir El-Rufai’s no-case submission, directing him to enter his defence in the alleged wiretapping trial.

    A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a no-case submission by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and ordered him to enter his defence, if he so desires, in his ongoing trial over the alleged unlawful interception of the telephone communications of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

    Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the order on Monday while ruling on the no-case submission filed by El-Rufai.

    The judge held that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to warrant calling on the former governor to enter his defence.

    The ruling means El-Rufai has been given the opportunity to respond to the allegations against him as the trial progresses.

    In a related development, an FCT High Court presided over by Justice Sylvanus Oriji had, a week earlier, dismissed El-Rufai’s ₦120 million fundamental rights suit against the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

    The court held that the agencies’ actions, including invitations, an attempted arrest at the airport and the seizure of his passport, did not violate his fundamental rights. It also awarded costs of ₦200,000 against each respondent.

    El-Rufai is also facing other ongoing cases, including corruption and money laundering matters linked to the ICPC in Kaduna.

    Nigerian comedian AY apologises to fans after payment disputes disrupt his October 25 Cardiff show, calling for refunds and clear updates.
    Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has apologised to fans after his Cardiff show failed to deliver the advertised performances, blaming unresolved payment commitments for the disruption.
    The comedian issued the apology on Monday, October 26, following the disruption of the Cardiff leg of his “AY Live: Single and Not Searching” UK tour, which was scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at Valegate Retail Park in Cardiff, Wales.
    AY said he and other comedians travelled to the venue and gained entry but were unable to perform before most of the audience left. He also called on the event organisers and UK tour management to provide ticket holders with clear information about refunds.
    In a statement shared on Instagram, AY acknowledged the disappointment experienced by fans who had paid to attend the show and said they should not have been affected by a dispute over payments.
    “My fellow comedians and I travelled to Cardiff to perform and eventually entered the venue. Unfortunately, unresolved payment commitments delayed our appearance, and by the time we arrived at the hall, most of the audience had left,” he said.
    He apologised to attendees, saying they deserved better organisation and timely communication about the event.
    “You deserved a properly organised show and timely information. You should never have been caught in the middle of a payment dispute,” AY stated.
    The comedian also asked fans to watch a video in which he explained his account of the incident before reaching conclusions about what happened.
    He called on the organisers and the tour management to resolve the situation for affected ticket holders, including providing information on refunds. AY said verified updates would be shared through his official channels.
    The disruption drew complaints from attendees on social media, with reports of prolonged waiting and confusion at the venue. As of Monday, no refund arrangements had been announced in the statement, and the organisers had yet to provide a public explanation of the circumstances surrounding the event.
    Despite the Cardiff disruption, AY said the remaining dates on his UK tour were still scheduled to go ahead. The announced performances are in Birmingham on October 30, London on October 31 and Manchester on November 1.
    The comedian also thanked supporters for helping build his brand over more than two decades and said he remained committed to maintaining their trust.

    OMP Launches to Unite Online Media Practitioners, Protect Professional Interests

    Online Media Professionals (OMP), a new association established to unite online media practitioners, has been formed to protect members’ interests, promote responsible journalism and strengthen the role of digital publications in Nigeria’s media industry.

    The association announced its formation in a communiqué dated October 25, 2026, in Enugu, stating that it would provide a common platform for practitioners to collaborate, address shared challenges and advance their professional interests.

    According to the communiqué, the growing influence of online publications in informing the public, shaping public discourse and holding public officeholders accountable has made it necessary for practitioners to organise under a recognised professional body.

    OMP said it would bring together individuals who own or work with online media platforms, providing opportunities for professional development, cooperation and engagement with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

    The association said it planned to build relationships with government officials, security agencies, educational institutions, corporate organisations and other bodies whose activities affect the media and the wider society.

    It said the engagements would create opportunities for dialogue and collaboration while promoting a better understanding of the role of online media practitioners.

    OMP is beginning its activities in the South-East, with plans to expand into a national organisation representing online media professionals across Nigeria.

    Its long-term objectives include establishing a credible professional body that can provide a common voice for practitioners, promote responsible media practice and address issues affecting their work and welfare.

    The association said the growth of online media must be accompanied by professionalism, accountability and respect for the responsibilities associated with informing the public.

    It added that it would encourage cooperation among practitioners and promote standards capable of strengthening public confidence in online publications.

    OMP also acknowledged that building a credible professional association would require members’ commitment, a clear sense of purpose and programmes that respond to their needs.

    Membership, according to the communiqué, is open to professionals who own or work with online media publication platforms and are willing to contribute to the association’s objectives.

    The association consequently called on online media practitioners across the South-East and other parts of the country to identify with the initiative and participate in building a stronger professional platform.

    The communiqué was signed by Jude Chinedu and Chukwumerije Aja on behalf of the Online Media Professionals Communiqué Drafting Committee.

  • 2027: NDC Appoints Dickson, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso to Lead National Campaign Council

    The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has constituted its national campaign council for the 2027 general elections.

    The list, released on Sunday, has Senator Seriake Dickson as the chairman, while the presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were listed as co-chairman and co-vice chairman of the national campaign caucus, respectively.

    Others are Senator Cleopas Zuwoghe as vice chairman, and former secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal (National Campaign Advisory Council), as a member.

    Also on the list are Ikenna Enekweizu, Sidi Abdul, Babatunde Alli, Senator Ovie Omo Agege, Senator Victor Umeh, Ibrahim Abdulkarim (DG, Presidential Campaign), Buba Galadima, Yakubu Ochefu, Mahmud Jahun, Moshood Salvador, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, Victor Ogene, and Muktar Usman.

    The list also has a 40-member national campaign advisory council, and 37 state campaign coordinators.

    The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, was named Director of Communication and Media.

    A former defence spokesperson, Major General John Enenche (retd.), was named Director of Security and Intelligence.

  • Nigeria’s First Ebola Patient and Husband Evacuated to Switzerland, Health Minister Confirms

    Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, on Monday confirmed that the first imported Ebola virus disease case in the country has been flown out of the country to Switzerland.

    Pate made the confirmation on his X handle, stating that the index patient, who has clinically improved, is stable and conscious, was evacuated along with her husband, who remained asymptomatic.

    He wrote: “I confirm that, with my approval, earlier this morning, the index case for Nigeria’s first imported Ebola virus disease departed Abuja for Switzerland. The index patient was clinically much improved, stable, conscious, communicating, and her clinical laboratory test results closing towards baseline.

    He, however, stated that her improvements do not mean she is not infectious, stating that strict protocols were put in place before her evacuation.

    “This does not mean she is not still infectious, hence the strict protocols in place. The patient was evacuated along with her spouse who has remained asymptomatic.

    ‘I thank all the various clinical staff for the high quality care they provided the patient as well as the public health personnel who ensured the evacuation was carried out in line with best public health measures for such evacuations.

    “We will provide further updates later this afternoon after the patient and her spouse lands successfully in their destination.

    “All public health measures are continuing to ensure successful containment of the imported virus.

    “I urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and rely on information from credible sources”, Pate said.

    The development came after the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), on Sunday, said that the number of contacts linked to the index case of Ebola recorded in October 2026 had risen to 53.

    The agency said the contacts comprise health workers as well as the domestic staff and spouse of the patient diagnosed with the disease.

    The NCDC, in its Ebola Disease Situation Report, said that a newly suspected case was reported by Rivers State on October 23, but laboratory results returned negative for Ebola disease.

    “Fifty-three contacts linked to the index case have so far been identified, categorized and followed up. Contacts listed include healthcare workers, domestic staff and spouse,” the report dated October 24, 2026, partly read.

    Giving a background on the index case, it said the patient is a 42-year-old woman who returned from Uganda through Addis Ababa on October 3, 2026, via an international flight to Abuja, Nigeria.

    The agency said she became symptomatic four days later and presented to a private health facility on October 10, and another on October 11.

    “She presented to another private facility on the 11th of October 2026, where she was admitted. The NCDC was notified on the 19th of October, followed by in-depth case investigation and sample collection,” it said.

    “A confirmation by the NCDC National Reference Laboratory was made on 20th October 2026. Symptoms at presentation included fever, diarrhoea, generalised body aches and sore throat. Bleeding was not reported.”

    Meanwhile, the Director-General of the agency, Dr. Jide Idris, has reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the FCT health authorities and partners, is fully committed to responding to the confirmed case of Ebola disease in the Federal Capital Territory.

    “I recognize the concern that the confirmation of Ebola may have caused among Nigerians. Ebola is a serious disease, and we are handling this situation with the urgency it deserves,” he said at a press briefing on Sunday. “We have a clear response plan, experienced personnel, and established public health systems that we are deploying to prevent further transmission.”

    What Nigerians Should Expect

    Idris explained that the government’s response is being implemented through a structured Incident Management System, coordinated by the Emergency Operations Centre, under the national leadership of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammed Pate, and the Presidential Task Force on EVD.

    “Our public health teams are working to identify everyone who may have been exposed to the confirmed case, assess their level of exposure, and ensure appropriate follow-up for 21 days from their last possible exposure.

    “This includes healthcare workers, patients, caregivers, household members, travel-related contacts and others who may have had relevant exposure.”

    While describing contact tracing as a detailed process requiring careful investigation, accurate information, and continued follow-up, the DG urged Nigerian to “cooperate fully” if contacted by a public health official.

    “I want to appeal directly to Nigerians: if you are contacted by a public health official, please cooperate fully. Provide accurate information about your movements, contacts, and any symptoms you may have experienced.

    “Being identified as a contact does not mean that you have Ebola. It means that public health teams need to assess and monitor your health so that any possible infection can be identified early. Your cooperation will help us identify potential cases quickly and prevent further transmission,” Idris added.

    ‘Our Healthcare Workers’

    He commended the healthcare workers whose vigilance and clinical judgement contributed to the identification of this case, noting that their high index of suspicion was critical in triggering the public health response.

    “I equally recognise their dedication care under challenging circumstances. You are central to our ability to bring this situation under control,” Idris said.

    “These include not only doctors, nurses and other professionals working in hospitals, but also the public health workforce responsible for surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory diagnosis, case management, infection prevention and control, community engagement and risk communication.”

    The Director General of the NCDC said the Federal Government would prioritise the safety, health and welfare of health workers throughout the response.

    “I want to use this opportunity to call on the leadership of every public and private healthcare facility in Nigeria to immediately review and strengthen their infection prevention and control measures.

    “Screening and triage must be instituted and consistently implemented. Healthcare workers must maintain a high index of suspicion, particularly when attending to patients with compatible symptoms and relevant exposure histories,” he said.

    “Standard precautions must be observed at all times. Hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, injection safety, safe management of sharps and proper waste management cannot be compromised.

    “Healthcare facilities must ensure the availability of appropriate personal protective equipment in the right quantities and ensure that staff know how to use it correctly.”

    Idris further stated that any suspected case must be promptly separated from other patients and reported to the relevant public health authorities.

    “Healthcare workers should not wait for laboratory confirmation before taking appropriate precautions,” he added.

    INEC Says Preliminary Voters’ Register Available at Wards, Not Online

    The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that the preliminary voters’ register is available for public inspection at registration areas across the country but has yet to be uploaded to its official website.

    INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Sunday.

    “The voter register has been published, but in the wards. It just wasn’t published on our website,” Haruna said.

    The clarification follows concerns over the commission’s failure to make the register accessible online during the scheduled display period, raising questions about voters’ ability to verify their details ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had urged INEC to publish the preliminary register immediately, warning that its unavailability could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

    In a statement issued on Thursday, Atiku faulted the commission for failing to provide online access to the register during the October 9 to 15, 2026, display period.

    He argued that voters needed to inspect the register to confirm their information, identify omissions and challenge questionable entries.

    Atiku also criticised INEC for announcing that the number of registered voters had exceeded 103 million without making the detailed list available online for public scrutiny.

    The controversy has renewed attention to the legal requirements governing the publication and display of the voters’ register before elections.

    Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 requires INEC to make copies of the register available for public scrutiny at registration areas and on its official website for seven days, within the period prescribed by law.

    The provision states that the commission must appoint a seven-day period, not later than 90 days before a general election, for displaying or publishing the register for each local government, area council or ward.

    The exercise is intended to give registered voters an opportunity to verify their details and enable the public to identify errors, omissions or questionable entries before the register is finalised.

    With the 2027 elections approaching, access to the preliminary voters’ register remains central to concerns about electoral transparency, voter participation and public trust in the electoral process.

    IG Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity for Retired Police Officers

    Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity for retired police officers as part of efforts to reform the Nigeria Police Force’s pension system and improve retirement benefits.

    The proposal is before a presidential committee set up to examine pension-related concerns among police personnel and recommend lasting solutions to the challenges affecting serving and retired officers.

    The committee includes representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation and the National Pension Commission.

    Under the proposed arrangement, eligible officers would receive an enhanced gratuity, with pension benefits linked to their last salaries.

    The initiative is also expected to address repeated protests by serving police officers demanding withdrawal from the Contributory Pension Scheme, an issue that has generated persistent controversy within the force.

    The proposed reforms seek to resolve outstanding pension liabilities, improve payments to retirees and establish a more effective system for administering police pensions.

    The plan could also cover officers who retired before a new pension framework is introduced, with provisions to review their benefits in line with any revised terms.

    The proposal comes amid renewed efforts by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address complaints from retired officers over inadequate pension benefits, delayed payments and administrative bottlenecks.

    The Federal Government has reportedly cleared outstanding pension arrears that previously left some retirees waiting for up to two years. Pension increases have also been introduced, with some beneficiaries receiving almost twice their previous payments.

    Disu’s engagements with the Presidency, PenCom and other relevant institutions are expected to support efforts to resolve outstanding funding issues, pension liabilities and administrative challenges.

    However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity has not been approved. Its implementation will depend on the presidential committee’s recommendations, government approval, funding arrangements and the guidelines eventually adopted.

    The final decision is expected to clarify who will qualify for the enhanced benefits and whether the reforms will cover serving officers nearing retirement as well as existing pensioners.

    The Federal Government is working to establish and strengthen Ebola treatment centres in states with designated ports of entry as the number of identified contacts linked to Nigeria’s confirmed case rises to 53.

    The measures are aimed at improving the country’s readiness to contain a possible spread of the virus, including expanding isolation capacity, strengthening surveillance at entry points and establishing referral systems for suspected cases.

    According to an Ebola situation report obtained on Sunday, the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital has undergone a needs assessment and optimisation to prepare it for isolation and treatment, while an infection prevention and control assessment is planned for Karu General Hospital in Abuja.

    The report said authorities were also working to identify and upgrade treatment facilities in states with designated ports of entry to ensure suspected cases could be transferred quickly from detection points to appropriate centres.

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has also approved an emergency payment of N100,000 per person weekly for individuals placed under isolation or quarantine to ease the financial burden of complying with public health monitoring.

    The NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed the intervention during a press briefing on Sunday, explaining that some contacts had raised concerns about the cost of feeding, accommodation and supporting their families while under monitoring.

    “We are providing N100,000 per person per week just to maintain their comfort and feeding, because they were complaining,” Idris said.

    He explained that the payment was not part of the initial response plan but became necessary because of the emergency.

    The NCDC chief added that the government was covering accommodation and feeding expenses, stressing that similar support might be required in other states if the outbreak response expanded beyond the Federal Capital Territory.

    “This is not the responsibility of the FCT alone. What we have to do for the FCT, we have to do for any other state, just in case,” he said, urging state governments to prepare adequate financial and logistical resources for emergencies.

    The situation report confirmed that 53 contacts had been identified, listed and categorised, up from the initial 44 recorded after the case was confirmed in the FCT.

    Idris said 44 of the contacts were linked to the health facility where the patient received treatment, while the remaining nine included household members and people who attended to her during an earlier emergency room visit.

    Health officials are also investigating possible secondary contacts to establish whether any of the people already identified may have exposed others.

    Idris said contacts would be monitored daily, with anyone developing symptoms assessed promptly. He disclosed that one contact who reported feeling unwell had tested negative, although monitoring was continuing.

    The NCDC has revised its case definition to help health workers and surveillance teams identify suspected Ebola infections. The criteria include people with compatible symptoms and relevant exposure histories, unexplained bleeding, or symptoms following contact with a confirmed or probable case.

    The agency has also urged communities to report unexplained deaths and suspected cases, particularly where there may have been exposure to the virus.

     Genomic sequencing completed

    The report stated that genomic sequencing of the confirmed case had been completed by the NCDC National Reference Laboratory and the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases.

    Further steps include sharing the sequencing report, continuing diagnostic testing and maintaining laboratory records. Additional testing reagents and supplies are also expected to be distributed across the national laboratory network.

    Authorities are strengthening infection prevention and control measures in healthcare facilities to minimise the risk of transmission to health workers, patients and other people.

    The planned measures include assessments of isolation capacity, implementation of screening and isolation strategies, and additional training for healthcare workers, particularly at the subnational level.

    Idris acknowledged that infection prevention and control capacity in some states needed improvement, adding that training remained a priority for the agency.

    The government has also increased its stockpile of personal protective equipment and other essential supplies. The report said 500 donated laboratory testing kits had been added to available stocks, while additional protective equipment and commodities would be distributed to high-risk states.

    Surveillance at airports and other ports of entry is also being strengthened, with Port Health Services working alongside aviation stakeholders to support the response.

    Other priorities include preparing high-risk states, establishing referral arrangements for suspected cases and improving communication with communities to counter misinformation about Ebola.

    The NCDC urged Nigerians to rely on official information, avoid spreading rumours and cooperate with health officials conducting contact tracing. It also warned against stigmatising people placed under monitoring.

    How the confirmed case was detected

    The confirmed case involves a woman who travelled to Nigeria after visiting Uganda, following a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    According to information previously provided by health authorities, she developed symptoms on October 7, sought medical attention in Abuja on October 11 and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus on October 20.

    The World Health Organisation has said investigations are ongoing to establish the likely source of the infection.

    Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood, body fluids or tissues of infected people or animals, as well as contaminated materials. Health authorities have urged Nigerians to practise regular hand hygiene and avoid contact with the bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having the disease.

    Nigeria successfully contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014 through rapid case identification, isolation, contact tracing and coordinated public health measures.

    The current response includes coordination among federal and state authorities, healthcare facilities and response partners to improve preparedness and ensure suspected cases are detected and managed promptly.

    Tinubu Blames Past Leaders for Hunger, Seeks Second Term in 2027

    President Bola Tinubu has blamed previous administrations and opposition figures for Nigeria’s hunger and poverty, while promising improved prosperity if re-elected in 2027.

    Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign flag-off at Ranchers Bees Stadium in Kaduna, where he urged Nigerians to support his re-election bid and other APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

    The President said his administration was working to address the country’s economic difficulties, adding that his government had maintained regular salary payments and that APC governors were making progress in their respective states.

    “I hear my opponents talking about hunger. Who created it? They did. They created hunger and poverty. We are trying to eradicate them,” Tinubu said.

    He assured Nigerians, particularly young people, that a second term would bring greater economic opportunities and prosperity.

    Tinubu also urged voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and turn out for the elections, calling on them to support APC candidates contesting governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and state assembly seats.

    He defended his administration’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the country was moving towards a new phase of growth and recovery.

    Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who also addressed the rally, appealed to Nigerians to renew the APC’s mandate, arguing that the party had delivered on its promises and deserved another term.

    Shettima highlighted infrastructure projects being pursued by the administration, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road, Kano-Maradi railway and Lagos-Kano rail corridor.

    He also pointed to investments in education in Kaduna State, citing the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, the Federal University of Education in Zaria and vocational institutions which he said had produced more than 4,000 graduates.

    Shettima said the APC won the 2023 presidential election because voters considered the alternatives and chose the party, expressing confidence that Nigerians would again support Tinubu.

    Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani also endorsed the President’s re-election bid, citing federal infrastructure projects and security interventions in the state.

    Sani said reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway was 95 per cent complete. He also highlighted work on the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road, which he said had received N117bn in funding after remaining abandoned for more than 40 years.

    The governor added that efforts to improve security had enabled the reopening of some schools and primary healthcare centres previously shut because of insecurity.

    The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, said the party would campaign on the administration’s record in infrastructure, healthcare, education and human capital development.

    Yari said APC leaders were engaging traditional rulers, Islamic clerics and other influential figures in Northern Nigeria to mobilise support for Tinubu’s return to office, describing continuity as important to the country’s stability and development.

    The Kaduna event formally launched Tinubu’s campaign for the 2027 presidential election. The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the poll for January 16, 2027.

    Several senior government and party officials attended the rally, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, governors, ministers, lawmakers and APC national executives.

    Thousands of supporters gathered at the stadium, wearing party-branded clothing, waving flags and chanting slogans in support of Tinubu and other APC candidates.
