Nkanu East: APC Campaign Ends in Nkerefi as Leaders Rally Support for Ogbuekwe

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State has rounded off its campaign tour with a grand finale in Nkerefi Ward 1, home ward of the party’s chairmanship candidate, Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe.

The event, held on Monday, September 21, attracted APC leaders, political appointees, community stakeholders and supporters, who rallied behind Ogbuekwe ahead of the September 26 local government election.

The gathering also featured calls for continued support for Governor Peter Mbah’s administration and the APC at the grassroots.

Prof. GOC Ajah, Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission, told the gathering that Mbah had done what he could and called on residents to support the governor and the APC.

“Mbah has done all that he can. It’s now for us to support him. It’s APC from top to bottom. Nkerefi has no problem. We are targeting the first position. Nkerefi will reciprocate Mbah’s goodwill to us in the fullness of time,” he said.

Commissioner for Lands, Barr. Chimaobi Okoli, said the gathering was an opportunity to appreciate the people of Nkanu East rather than simply campaign for votes.

“We are not here for campaigns but to say thank you to the people of Nkanu East,” he said.

Okoli also highlighted ongoing road construction by Mbah across the local government, saying the projects were reducing the difficulty residents previously faced travelling between communities.

“There was a time Nkanu East appeared to be like four different local governments due to how lengthy the journey to move from one community to another was. But Mbah has shortened the journey by the ongoing construction of roads to link all parts of the local government,” he said.

The Director-General of the Mmirioma Campaign Council, Emeka Nwatu, congratulated Nkerefi for producing Ogbuekwe, urging residents to take ownership of the campaign and the political project.

The incumbent Nkanu East Chairman, Sydney Edeh, also pledged his support for Ogbuekwe, saying the candidate would receive the backing required for what he described as seamless continuity.

“Mike will receive all the support he needs for a seamless continuity,” Edeh said.

He further told the candidate: “Mike, you will go farther than the position of chairman. I thank Nkanu East for their support to me. Give same support to Mike Ogbuekwe and he won’t disappoint you.”

Speaking at the event, Ogbuekwe expressed gratitude to the people of Nkanu East and acknowledged Nkerefi’s reported resolution to support the APC.

“All I have is gratitude. Nkerefi is grateful to Nkanu East,” he said.

He added: “We acknowledge Nkerefi’s resolution to vote APC. We will work very well to support Peter Mbah. We see Mbah’s works throughout Enugu State, including Nkanu East.”

Earlier, Monday Diamond Ani, General Manager of the Community and Social Development Agency, called for prayers for Ogbuekwe’s success.

The grand finale marked the conclusion of the APC’s campaign tour of Nkanu East ahead of the local government election scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The election will be conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) across the state.

2027: Awkunanaw Traditional Rulers Endorse Mbah for Second Term

…declare him sole candidate of choice for Enugu governorship election

Traditional rulers from Awkunanaw cultural zone in Enugu State, under the aegis, “Council/Forum of Ndi Igwe from the Awkunanaw Extraction of Nkanu”, have declared their collective support for the re-election of Governor Peter Mbah in the 2027 Enugu State governorship election.

The traditional rulers, drawn from communities in Nkanu West and Enugu South Local Government Areas, stated their position in a communiqué issued on Monday, following deliberations and reflections on the affairs and development of Enugu State.

The Council said it acknowledged the leadership and development initiatives of the Mbah administration, particularly in infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, economic development, revenue generation and transportation.

It also recognised what it described as the direction of the present administration and efforts to reposition the State for sustainable growth and development.

The traditional rulers said this informed their recognition of the need for continuity in governance, particularly where ongoing programmes, reforms and development initiatives should be allowed to mature and deliver their full benefits.

“Following extensive deliberation and consultation among the Royal Fathers, we hereby state, in unison and without equivocation, our collective support for the re-election bid of His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as Governor of Enugu State,” they stated.

According to the communiqué, the position reflected the “collective will and resolution” of the Council/Forum of Ndi Igwe from the Awkunanaw Extraction of Nkanu.

The Council subsequently endorsed Mbah for re-election in 2027, stating: “We stand together in support of His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah as our sole candidate of choice for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Enugu State.”

It further stated: “Our endorsement is based on our assessment of the direction of governance, the development witnessed across the State, and our conviction that continuity will allow the administration to consolidate its programmes and further advance the State.”

The traditional rulers also reaffirmed their responsibility as custodians of their respective communities to listen to their people, articulate their concerns and support initiatives that promote peace, development, prosperity and the wellbeing of Ndi Enugu.

They pledged to continue engaging constructively with the Enugu State Government and communicating the concerns and aspirations of their communities through appropriate channels.

The communiqué was signed on behalf of the Council/Forum by 17 traditional rulers from the zone, namely HRH Igwe Daniel Nnamani of Amechi Uno Awkunanaw; Igwe Linus Okafor of Obeagu Uno; Igwe Greg Ugwu of Attakwu Akegbe Awkunanaw; Igwe Obiora Igweshi of Omuohа Obuofia Awkunanaw; Igwe Raymond Agwa of Akegbe Ugwu Awkunanaw; Igwe Mike Nnukwu of Obeagu Awkunanaw; Igwe Okechukwu Nwobodo of Umuatugbuoma Akegbe Awkunanaw; and Igwe Ignatius Ugwu of Amagu Akegbe Awkunanaw.

  • Why Mike Ogbuekwe Fits Nkanu East’s Next Chapter

Why Mike Ogbuekwe Fits Nkanu East’s Next Chapter

Politics, as the saying goes, is often about timing. But in local government administration, timing alone is not enough. The quality of the man who takes over can determine whether the gains of one administration are consolidated or gradually eroded.

That is why the coming transition in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State is attracting attention.

The contest is not simply about who wins an election. It is about who succeeds a chairman whose administration has significantly raised the expectations of the people.

Hon. Sydney Edeh, the outgoing chairman of Nkanu East and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Enugu State Chapter, has been widely regarded as one of the best-performing local government chairmen in the country.

That reputation creates an interesting political dilemma for Nkanu East: how do you replace a performing chairman without lowering the bar?

It is against this background that the emergence of Hon. Chikosolu Mike Ogbuekwe as the APC chairmanship candidate becomes significant.

Ogbuekwe is not merely another politician seeking an elective office. His trajectory suggests a different kind of political proposition—one built around professional competence, administrative experience, exposure and grassroots politics.

    Beyond the usual political résumé

There is something unusual about Ogbuekwe’s public service journey.

A Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he first built a career in the private sector, working with Intercontinental Bank and later Baker Hughes, where his professional assignments exposed him to international training and global business practices.

He subsequently moved into public service and, rather than remaining confined to one portfolio, became a recurring presence in policy and administrative circles.

In Anambra State, under former Governor Willie Obiano, Ogbuekwe served as Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture and was subsequently entrusted with responsibilities in the state’s Economic Think Tank, Land Acquisition and Mediation Team and Agriculture Transformation Implementation Team.

In 2018, he was appointed Director-General of the Project Management and Monitoring Office, a position that placed him at the intersection of government policy and implementation.

    That assignment is particularly instructive.

Government is often good at announcing projects but considerably less impressive at ensuring that those projects are delivered according to specification. Ogbuekwe’s job was to monitor projects, programmes and contracts and ensure compliance with standards.

His reported experience in that office, including savings to the Anambra State Government through project monitoring, offers an insight into the management philosophy he could bring to local government.

    The Enugu chapter

His return to Enugu did not mark the end of that trajectory.

Under former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Ogbuekwe served as Special Adviser and Focal Person on the state’s Non-Oil Export Programme. He was also involved in the World Bank-supported Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery Economic Stimulus Committee, the state’s COVID-19 Emergency and Palliative Committee and Public Sector Reform Committee.

Under Governor Peter Mbah, he has continued to occupy strategic positions, serving as Special Adviser on Agriculture and Chief Executive Officer of Enugu State Marketing Company Limited.

For a man now seeking to administer a local government, the significance of this experience is obvious.

He has seen government from several sides: policy formulation, project monitoring, economic development, agriculture, public-sector reform and implementation.

The question is whether that experience can be translated into effective grassroots governance.

That, ultimately, is the real political test.

    The Sydney Edeh standard

But there is another dimension to the Nkanu East succession question that cannot be ignored.

Sydney Edeh’s tenure has changed the political conversation in the local government.

A chairman who also emerged as ALGON chairman and gained recognition for his performance has, by implication, made the job of his successor more difficult.

The successor will inherit not only an office but also a benchmark.

This is why the argument that Ogbuekwe should succeed Edeh is not simply about party loyalty or political succession.

There is a case to be made for continuity with capacity.

Nkanu East does not necessarily need a carbon copy of Edeh. What it needs is a successor capable of preserving the strengths of the outgoing administration while introducing his own ideas and energy.

And that is where Ogbuekwe’s background becomes politically relevant.

    A technocrat in grassroots politics

The irony of Nigerian politics is that the people who know how to manage institutions are not always the people who know how to win elections.

    Ogbuekwe now faces both tests.

His professional credentials may get him through the door, but his connection with the people will determine how far he can go.

Those close to the Nkanu East political terrain point to his community presence, interventions and relationships with ordinary people as evidence that he is not detached from the grassroots.

    That distinction matters.

Local government is perhaps the most intimate level of government. Its failures are experienced at the doorstep, in the market, on rural roads, in schools, health centres and farms.

The chairman therefore needs more than a good résumé. He needs political sensitivity, accessibility and the ability to convert limited resources into visible impact.

    The bigger political calculation

There is also a broader political calculation.

With the APC consolidating its structure in Enugu State and Ogbuekwe enjoying the backing of the party leadership, his candidacy represents more than an individual ambition. It fits into the emerging political architecture of the state.

But elections are ultimately decided by voters, not endorsements.

The real question is whether Ogbuekwe can convert institutional experience, party support and personal goodwill into a popular mandate.

If he does, the significance will extend beyond winning an election.

He would be taking over a local government from an administration that has set a relatively high performance benchmark. That would make his first responsibility clear: do not lower the bar.

    A succession that carries expectations

Perhaps this is the strongest argument for Ogbuekwe.

Nkanu East is not looking for an administrator who merely wants to occupy the chairman’s office. The political environment demands someone who understands that local government has become an important instrument for development.

Ogbuekwe’s decade-plus journey through the private sector and the governments of Anambra and Enugu states has given him an unusual breadth of experience for a first-time electoral candidate.

Whether that experience will translate into good local government remains a question only governance can answer.

But in a succession contest where the outgoing chairman is widely regarded as one of the country’s better-performing council bosses, it is hardly unreasonable for the people to demand a successor with comparable stature.

Ogbuekwe’s supporters believe he is that man.

The voters of Nkanu East will have the final word.

And if the politics of the moment is about continuity without complacency, experience without detachment and fresh leadership without abandoning what works, then Ogbuekwe appears to fit neatly into the conversation.

Ogbuekwe Receives Ofo, Community Leaders’ Backing as Grassroots Support Grows Ahead of Sept 26 LG Polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairmanship Candidate for Nkanu East Local Government Area, Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe, has received the traditional Ofo of Nkanu East and secured the backing of Presidents-General of various autonomous communities as grassroots consultations intensify ahead of the council election.

The traditional rulers of Nkanu East presented the revered Ofo to Ogbuekwe as a symbol of confidence, goodwill, prayers and the responsibility associated with public leadership.

Receiving the Ofo, Ogbuekwe expressed appreciation to the traditional rulers, describing the gesture as both an honour and a solemn reminder of the responsibility he would bear if elected.

He pledged to lead with integrity, humility and accountability, while respecting the traditional institutions, cultural values and collective interests of the people of Nkanu East.

Ogbuekwe also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the development agenda of Governor Peter Mbah, saying the local government should complement the state government’s efforts rather than operate in isolation.

He said that, if elected, his administration would work closely with traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women and other stakeholders to translate the state’s development programmes into tangible benefits at the grassroots.

The APC candidate’s engagement with community leaders also continued at the ALGON Office, where Presidents-General of various autonomous communities met with him to discuss the challenges and development needs of their communities.

The community leaders expressed support for Ogbuekwe’s aspiration and pledged to work with him towards advancing the interests of the local government.

Speaking during the engagement, Ogbuekwe said effective grassroots leadership must be built around listening to the people, maintaining open communication and working with communities to solve their problems.

He urged community leaders to approach him directly whenever they have concerns, stressing that there should be no barriers between elected leaders and the people they represent.

He thanked the Presidents-General for their confidence and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a close working relationship with traditional institutions and community leadership structures across Nkanu East.

The engagements come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2026 local government election, with Ogbuekwe increasingly positioning his campaign around grassroots participation, responsible leadership, accountability and development.

The candidate described the presentation of the Ofo and the engagement with community leaders as a charge to serve, pledging to remain accessible and committed to the collective interest of the people.

The developments add to a series of grassroots engagements by Ogbuekwe as he seeks the mandate to lead Nkanu East, with his campaign stressing partnership, continuity, inclusion and translating government policies into meaningful impact at the local level.
