Committed to strengthening Maternal and Child Health Care in Nkanu West local council of Enugu State, the First Lady of Nkanu West LGA, Mrs Mary Onyinyechukwu Ejim, Friday, October 7, 2022, flagged off vaccination for Measles and Yellow Fever.

The flag off ceremony which was performed by the First Lady and the Council Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Ejim, was held at Nkanu West Health Centre.

Speaking at the ceremony, the First Lady, Mary Onyinyechukwu Ejim, thanked the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and his wife, Mrs Monica Ugwuanyi, for their thoughtful support to the fight against the diseases.

She expressed gratitude to her husband, the council chairman, for what she described as his “unending support and dedication towards the welfare of Nkanu West residents especially women and children”.

Addressing the women of the local council area who turned out in their numbers, she said, “we urge you to comply with us and allow your kids to be vaccinated”.

Lauding the health department, especially frontline workers, she supported the vaccination programme with fifty thousand naira and a brand new megaphone to aid in making town announcements and disseminating health information.

Head of Health Department in Nkanu West, Mrs Ogbodo Eunice, thanked the council chairman and first lady for their immeasurable support towards the welfare and affairs of Nkanu West health department.

Stressing on the aim of the flag off and campaign as being for awareness, she noted that the vaccination will commence on October 13, 2022.

“The vaccination will be administered not only in Nkanu West but all over Enugu. Other vaccines like COVID-19 vaccines and other routine immunizations will also be administered. The vaccination programme will last for 10 days and if you have received yellow fever vaccine in the past, you don’t need a second dose because the immunity lasts for 10 years”.

The Supervisor for Health, Hon Mrs Roseline Nnaji, adviced the people to take advantage of the free-health services aimed at ensuring safety of children and adults against measles and yellow fever.

“Mothers have lost their babies to measles. It is important you cooperate with us and vaccinate your kids”, Nnaji said.

Mrs Stella Ani pointed out that letters had been sent out to schools, churches and communities to inform them of the vaccination exercise.

She enlightened the residents more on the vaccination programme, stating that BCG (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin) vaccine fights against Tuberculosis (ukwara nta) and Polio vaccine fights against paralysis, weak muscles and muscle twitch.

She expressed profound gratitude for the COVID-19 lab testing site established in Nkanu West, at Amurri health Centre. She also adviced mothers to pay close attention to training their young children especially the female ones, create a channel for proper communication with them and report any side effects to health/medical centres.

Pledging her continued support, the First Lady further supported nursing mothers with soaps, buckets and gave party women wrappers and fifty thousand naira. The council chairman, Hon. Uchenna Ejim, also made donations to support the vaccination exercise.

HRH Igwe Okechukwu Egbune and Engr. Buchi Nnaji, SPA to the council chairman on Media, were present.

Others were representatives from Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency and World Health Organization.

  • Fani-Kayode withdraws case against estranged wife, amicably resolves dispute

Fani-Kayode withdraws case against estranged wife, amicably resolves dispute

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, yesterday, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja for the termination of further hearing on the attempted murder case filed against his estranged wife, Ms Precious Chikwendu.

The former minister, who was personally in court for the withdrawal of the suit, said the differences he had with his ex-wife have been amicably resolved.

The matter was originally fixed for Ms Chikwendu to take her plea to a 13-count charge marked FHCABJ/CR/1/2022, which was filed by the Police.

The prosecution alleged that the former beauty queen had on November 24, 2018, attempted to stab the former minister with a kitchen knife at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

He told the court that Ms Chikwendu had in a post she published on her Facebook page, derogatorily referred to Fani-Kayode as “Mr Short Fuse.”

She was accused of publishing false information against the ex-minister by referring to him as “a person who is sexually incapacitated,” imputing that he is not the biological father of the four children she had for him as a wife.

Others that were equally cited as defendants in the matter were Emmanuel Anakan, Prisca Chikwendu and Osakwe Azubuike, while others were said to be at large.

Charges against the defendants bordered on cybercrime, intimidation to kill Fani-Kayode by use of the Internet, attempted culpable homicide, as well as threat to kill one Lauretta in a bid to frighten her to leave her relationship with the ex-minister.

Meanwhile, when the matter was called for the defendants to enter their plea, yesterday, the prosecution counsel, Mr John Ijagbemi, applied to withdraw the charge.

“My lord, the matter was slated for re-arraignment of the defendants today (Thursday). However, we want to plead to your lordship for the withdrawal of the case,” Ijagbemi stated.

He told the court that the Commissioner of Police for the FCT received a letter from the nominal complainant (Fani-Kayode) about his intention to withdraw the case.

Following a no objection stance by counsel to the defendants, Mr Peter Abang, trial Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit.

    Chetanne Chinelo, Enugu

The Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is set to unveil his campaign manifesto.

In an invitation signed by Dan Nwomeh, Head, Peter Mbah Media Office, the unveiling will hold on Thursday, October 13, 2022 by 10am at the Law Auditorium, Godfrey Okoye University, Thinkers Corner, Enugu.

Nwomeh stated that party faithfuls, various Peter Mbah campaign support groups, the media and the general public are invited.

Recall that the unveiling of the manifesto was initially to hold on Thursday, June 30, 2022, but was however postponed.

In a press release, the media organization hinged the reason for the postponement on the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC Guidelines for 2023.

The statement released then read: “The decision came after a review of the Electoral Act and INEC Guidelines for 2023 elections by our legal team.

“The team advised that the scheduled event may be interpreted to be a violation of both the Act and the Guidelines, hence, the decision to discontinue the unveiling event.

“A new date that aligns with both the Act, and the Guidelines will be communicated later.

“We regret the inconveniences this may cause our invited guests, party faithful and supporters”.

Mbah who scored 790 votes during the PDP guber primaries held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, is expected to be joined by his running mate and Deputy Governorship Candidate, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, party executives, some former gubernatorial aspirants, friends, well wishers and supporters.

At the end of the primaries and in his acceptance speech, Mbah promised to serve with humility, transparency and inclusiveness while calling for the support of Ndi Enugu for the party to win the general election in 2023.

Prior to joining the gubernatorial race, Mbah, a maritime lawyer, was Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance in the Chimaroke Nnamani led administration. He also is the Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited, a major player in the downstream sector of the oil & gas industry.

It is believed that the presentation of the manifesto is the first activity to signal the commencement of the PDP guber campaign in the state.

  • Reps commence probe of abandoned, under-utilised govt property

Reps commence probe of abandoned, under-utilised govt property

The House of Representatives has commenced a probe of federal government properties in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamila, while declaring the probe open on Thursday, said the investigation became imperative, owing to a large number of abandoned or under-utilised government properties across the country.

Gbajabiamila, who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Legislative Agenda, Henry Nwawuba, said the abandoned properties if properly managed will be of immense benefit to the country.

“Across the country, several properties belonging to the Federal Government of Nigeria have been abandoned, and others severely under-utilised for many years. The Federal Government of Nigeria possesses a large stock of abandoned properties that could become viable assets for the benefit of the Nigerian people if managed properly.

“The House of Representatives has since resolved to help identify these assets and take legislative action to help ensure they are either put to good use or transferred to provide income for

the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the speaker stated.

The chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee investigating abandoned federal government properties, sub-committee on FCT, Jonathan Gbefwi, in his opening remarks, said abandoned government properties across the country are worth hundreds of billion naira.

Gbefwi explained that the intention of the panel “is to determine exactly how many there are, where they are located, the reasons for their abandonment and the options for recovering, reviving, and revitalising these assets to the benefit of the Nigerian people.”

“These projects are a visual manifestation of the excesses and failure to plan effectively and execute efficiently that has hampered our national growth and development for many years. In seeking to account for these assets, the House of Representatives, through this Ad-Hoc Committee is simply trying to rewrite past wrongs.”

  • Appeal court asks FG, ASUU to explore alternative dispute resolution

Appeal court asks FG, ASUU to explore alternative dispute resolution

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal yesterday urged the Federal Government and the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to further explore an out-of-court resolution of their dispute.

Consequently, the appellate court in a unanimous decision by a three-man panel of Justices, deferred hearing of the Appeal ASUU lodged before it for another 24 hours.

It said the decision was to allow the warring parties to have a rethink and re-approach the negotiation table, with a view to resolving all the thorny issues amicably.

Justice Georgewill Biobele Abraham had after the matter was called up for hearing, implored FG’s lawyer, Mr. James Igwe, SAN, and counsel to ASUU, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, to take patriotic stand and convey the position of the court to their clients.

“There is time for everything. Time for war and time for peace. As ministers in the temple of justice, we want to see the two of you as senior lawyers to encourage and explore amicable settlement of this dispute.

“In fact, we expect to return to this court on Thursday (today) with good news that the dispute has been thrashed out and all the appreciation of Nigerians will go to you.

“So, talk to your clients to take the interest of the nation into consideration for the sake of our children. As you leave here, go and sit down and talk and resolve the matter,” Justice Abraham added.

Responding, FG’s lawyer, Igwe, thanked the panel for the admonition and promised to further discuss the issue with ASUU’s lawyer.

On his part, Falana, SAN, said his clients were always open for dialogue, adding that he had earlier initiated a similar move.

Falana, however, stressed that amicable resolution of the issue in dispute would involve a give and take from the two parties.

Meanwhile, the panel, presided over by Justice Barka Hamma Akawu, said it would today hear the motion ASUU filed to stay the execution of judgement of the National Industrial Court, NIC, that ordered an end to its ongoing strike.

FG’s lawyer, Igwe had contended that he was not served with a copy of the motion dated September 28.

It will be recalled that the NIC had on September 21, ordered ASUU to call off its over seven-month old strike in national interest and for the sake of undergraduates in the country.

It ordered the striking varsity lecturers to return to the classroom, pending the determination of a suit FG filed to query the legality of their action.

However, ASUU had since lodged a 14-ground of appeal to set aside the judgement, even as it applied for stay of its execution.

  • INEC gov list: Litigation kicks out 14 candidates from APC, PDP, LP

INEC gov list: Litigation kicks out 14 candidates from APC, PDP, LP

The Independent National Electoral Commission has released the final list of candidates that will contest the governorship and houses of assembly election in 28 states of the federation in the 2023 elections.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, the list contained 18 political parties that fielded 837 candidates and their running mates for the 28 governorship elections.

Also, the statement indicated that 10,231 candidates would vie for 993 seats in the state assembly elections.

The list also included the names of the running mates to the governorship candidates from the 18 political parties billed to participate in the poll.

Findings by The report indicate that no fewer than 14 candidates in 12 states have been knocked off the INEC list on account of the litigation and controversies that dogged the parties’ primary elections.

This is against the backdrop of ongoing litigations in Ebonyi, Akwa-Ibom, Enugu, Rivers, Ogun and four other states.

According to the elections timetable for the 2023 general elections, the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will take place on March 11, 2023.

But the poll will not be held in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states which are no longer part of the general elections circle.

Those cleared for the governorship race include; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Ovie Omo-Agege of Delta State and 833 others.

In Delta, Omo-Agege of APC would be competing with the state House of Assembly Speaker, Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party; Great Ogboru of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, and Kenneth Gbagi of the Social Democratic Party.

Also cleared for the governorship are former Minister of State for Education; Agbi Goodnews Goodman of NNPP; Ogba Emmanuel Samuel of ADP; Ekure Efeoghene Shedrack of ADC; Gwede Jerkins Giane of AA; and America Emmanuel of NRM.

Checks showed that the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party will not field governorship candidates in Akwa Ibom and Ogun states respectively.

In addition, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Booth Party, Labour Party, Young Peoples Party and Zenith Labour Party will also not contest in Ogun State as they have no candidates.

The APC candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Akanimo Udofia, was missing from the list following the crisis in the state chapter of the party and the refusal of INEC to monitor the primary which produced him. It, therefore, rejected his candidacy in line with the Electoral Act 2022.

At least four suits had been filed against the Ogun State governorship candidate of the PDP, Ladi Adebutu.

Two of the suits were filed by former aspirants – Segun Showunmi and Jimi Lawal, while three PDP members – Taiwo Olabode Idris, Kehinde Akala and Alhaji Ayinde Monsuru, also filed another suit challenging the delegates’ list used in the conduct of the party primaries.

Last Tuesday, a Federal High court sitting in Abeokuta, nullified all the primaries conducted by the PDP in the state.

The court also barred INEC from recognising Adebutu as the governorship candidate of the party in the state. Reports said Adebutu had filed an appeal against the Federal Court judgment.

In Gombe State, the Peoples Redemption, Young People’s Party, and All Progressives Grand Alliance had no governorship candidates as the space for them was blank.

In Jigawa, the African Action Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Peoples Party and the Zenith Labour Party had no candidates.

Similarly in Kaduna State, the AAC, Booth Party and ZLP will not field governorship candidates while the AAC, APP, APM and APGA would also not participate in the governorship poll.

Further checks also confirmed that the AAC, APP, APM, YPP and APGA have no governorship candidates in Katsina.

Also, the AAC, APGA and New Nigeria Peoples Party will not contest in the Kebbi governorship election.

According to the INEC list, APGA, BP and NRM will not feature in Kwara State.

The ZLP will not contest in the Oyo governorship poll while the PRP does not have a candidate in Rivers State.

Only the Accord Party has no governorship candidate in Sokoto; however, the party will also be missing on the ballot in Yobe alongside AAC, APGA, BP, NRM, PRP and ZLP.

Abia State has 18 governorship candidates cleared by the Commission. They include Ikechi Emenike of APC; Eleazar Ikonne of PDP; Alex Otti of LP; Enyinnaya Nwafor of YPP, Bishop Onuoha of ADC, and Greg Ibe of APGA.

No fewer than 16 parties are contesting the governorship election in Lagos. Besides Governor Sanwo-Olu of the APC, others are Abdulazeez Adediran of the PDP; and Funso Doherty of the African Democratic Congress.

Other parties contesting for the governorship of the state include Accord Party with Dickson Olaogun as a candidate; Balogun Abdulrazaq, AA; Layiwola Olajide, AAC; Bamidele Ishola, ADP; Kupoliyi Funmilayo, APM; Adeyemi Roseline, APP; Oluwo Wasiu. BP; Jim-Kamal Olalekan, NNPP; Braithwaite Ishola, NRM and others.

In Kaduna State, the APC, PDP, and NNPP governorship candidates; Uba Sani, Isa Ashiru, and Suleiman Hunkuyi made the list.

However, the candidate of LP, Jonathan Asake, was missing as Alhaji UmaruIbrahim was recognised as the party’s governorship candidate.

In Kano, Shaaban Sharada made the list for ADP; Aishatu Mahmud for NRM, Nasiru Gawuna for APC, and Abba Yusuf for NNPP.

In Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly and APC candidate and Bernard Odoh, a former Secretary to State Government of APGA made the list.

Also, Ifeanyichukwuma Odii of PDP, Edward Nkwegu of LP, Chukwuma Nwandugo of AA, Sunday Opoke of YPP and Anthony Usulor of NRM were among those that made the governorship list, as well.

In Ogun, some of the candidates listed by INEC include Governor Dapo Abiodun of the APC; Biyi Otegbeye, ADC; Ojeshina Olawunmi for SDP; Ogunronbi Oludayo for NRM; and Oguntoyinbo Femi Ajadi for NNPP.

In Plateau, Goshwe Yilwatda of APC, Abashe Nwakpak of APGA, Dakum Sunday of LP, Abdullahi Ango of NNPP, Mutfwang Manasseh of PDP; Binchak Pony of SDP; and Gontori Butdangman of YPP were among candidates cleared for the governorship race.

In Rivers State, INEC cleared 16 governorship candidates. Among those cleared are Similanayi Fubara of PDP, Tonye Cole of APC, Magnus Abe of SDP, Dumo Lulu-Briggs of Accord Party and Dr Dawari George of African Alliance.

Senator Magnus Abe of the Social Democratic Party and Dr. Dawaro George of the Action Alliance, both of whom are former aspirants of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 governorship election in the state, made the list.

Abe and George secured the ticket of the SDP and AA respectively through substitution primaries.

Meanwhile, the duo are still facing litigation from aggrieved party members who are faulting their emergence.

Also intact on the INEC list are top contenders and governorship candidates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Siminialaye Fubara, and his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress, Tonye Cole, and Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs of the Accord Party.

Meanwhile, in Enugu State, 17 parties will contest in the 2023 governorship poll in the state.

Notable among the parties and their candidates is the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga. This may have put to rest the confusion over the authentic candidate of the party in the state, following Capt Evarest Nnaji’s insistence that he is the candidate of the party.

Edeoga however has some hurdles to cross, as the Federal High Court in Abuja has continued the hearing on the case instituted by Nnaji challenging his exclusion from the repeat primary election that produced Edeoga as the candidate.

In the list Edeoga’s name appeared as number 19, with his running mate, Dr. John Nwokeabia.

Speaking on the list, Okoye in the statement said, ‘’The publication of the full names of candidates standing nominated for state elections follows the political parties’ conduct of primaries and completion of the nomination exercise.

’’It will be recalled that at the end of the process, political parties that conducted valid primaries uploaded the list and personal particulars of all nominated candidates to the Commission’s candidate nomination portal and the subsequent display in their constituencies nationwide as provided by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act.’

“Subsequently, validly nominated candidates had the opportunity to voluntarily withdraw their candidature by notice in writing and personally delivered such notice to the political party that nominated them for the election. Thereafter, political parties substituted such candidates under section 31 of the Electoral Act for which the last day was 12th August 2022 for State Elections as clearly provided in item 6 of the Commission’s Timetable and Schedule of Activities.

“Thereafter, no withdrawal or substitution of candidates is allowed except in the event of death as provided in section 34(1) of the Electoral Act or under an order of a Court of competent jurisdiction.’’

The National Publicity Chairman of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, explained that six of the party’s candidates in Ogun, Bayelsa and four other states were affected as a result of a glitch on the INEC portal.

“It was because the INEC portal crashed. The volume of the information and images on the site was too enormous. People are supposed to do physical submissions instead of the forms they are passing to parties to fill, which is not even in the Electoral Act. This was even the reason we went to court in the first place,” he said.

He, however, expressed confidence that INEC would soon upload their names and profiles.

The APC National Publicity, Felix Morka could not be reached for comment on the absence of the party’s governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State.

Commenting, the PDP Legal Adviser, Kamaludeen Ajibade SN, observed that INEC would not list a candidate where there is litigation, adding that the party has appealed the judgment concerning its party in Ogun State.

Meanwhile, commenting on the litigation over the party primaries in some states, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN, said, “I don’t think court intervention will in any way truncate the fielding of candidates for the next election by political parties.

“We have seen this again and again. We have passed this route before. It’s a well beaten path. It is not a new route that is being taken. That is why, I said we are not practicing democracy. We are practicing electionocracy.

“Now, why I said this may not be of much worry is that under the Constitution there is up 180 days to commence and finish all election petition-related matters.”

  • My husband suffered long trauma from civil war, 40 months detention –Buhari’s wife

My husband suffered long trauma from civil war, 40 months detention –Buhari’s wife

First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, yesterday, said President Muhammadu Buhari suffered Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for many years as a result of his involvement in the Nigerian civil war, his removal as the military’s head of state in 1985, and his subsequent detention for 40 months without being charged with any crimes.

She made the disclosure as a special guest of honour at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Armed Forces Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre (AFPTSDC) initiated by the wife of the Chief of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mrs Lucky Irabor, through the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).

The president’s wife said her husbands health condition was not helped by the lack of proper rehabilitation.

She claimed Buhari’s failure in three straight elections made matters worse for her in the circumstance she found herself in when she married him at the age of 19 and unintentionally served as his physiotherapist.

She reprimanded lawmakers who had recently lost primary elections and had become nearly inconsolable, with some turning off their phones in an effort to avoid contact.

“I want to thank DEPOWA for this foresighted vision of establishing a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Centre for our soldiers. Indeed, PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by terrifying events.

“It is a reality that soldiers and military families have to live with, despite its negative consequences. Being a soldier’s wife or a retired soldier’s wife and a wellness expert, I understand the challenges associated with PTSD and its impact on military families and the nation.

“My husband served the Nigerian Army for 27 years before he was overthrown in a coup d’état. He fought civil war for 30 months without rehabilitation; he ruled Nigeria for 20 months and was detained for 40 months without disclosing the nature of his offence. One year after he came out from detention, we were married, I clocked 19 years in his house as his wife, legitimately. I suffered the consequences of PTSD, because having gone through all these, and at the age of 19, to handle somebody, who was a former Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, to tell him that he is wrong is the first mistake you will make.

“So, at the age of 19, I had to figure out how to tell somebody of his calibre that he was wrong or right and that was the beginning of my offence in his house, and contesting elections in 2003 and failed, 2007, failed and 2011, the same thing – all without rehabilitation – I became a physiotherapist. Finally, the whole nation rose against the misuse of power and bad governance. He only succeeded when it became a movement and here we are today. He ruled Nigeria before and he is ruling Nigeria now and this is the last time and final.

“Failing election for three times was a big blow to every contestant but those that have contested for just yesterday, a simple primary election, they are still living in a traumatic condition, I tried to console them, I tried to talk to them, some of them have switched off their phones up till today, just because of a primary election.

“You can imagine myself at 19 years, handling somebody that went to war, suffered coup d’état, then lost several elections, and, finally, getting to the Villa in the 2015. Also, for a woman to tell them that this is wrong or right in Nigeria and Africa is a problem.”

Mrs. Buhari emphasised that soldiers were the main victims and that the PTSD centre was crucial for all members of the armed forces.

President of DEPOWA, Mrs Vickie Irabor, said the centre was born out of compassion for families of soldiers and research conducted by the association.

  • Court to hear ASUU’s appeal seeking stay of execution today

Court to hear ASUU’s appeal seeking stay of execution today

The Court of Appeal has fixed today to hear the suit filed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), seeking a stay of execution of the ruling of the National Industrial Court, which ordered it to call off the strike.

When the matter was called yesterday, counsel to ASUU, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), told the court that he had two applications before the court, but that he wished to withdraw one and the court granted his request.

Falana told the court that he had served the preferred application to the Federal Government and had proof of service.

Counsel to the Federal Government, Mr James Igwe (SAN), however, told the court that it was the withdrawn application that he had seen and responded to.

He said in the light of the new development, he needed time to respond to the application which he said he intended to oppose.

The presiding judge, Justice Hamma Barka, consequently fixed today to hear ASUU’s application.

Earlier, one of the justices, Justice Biobele Georgewill advised both counsel to meet and evolve a solution to settle the ASUU-FG impasse out of court.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has commended the National Industrial Court for putting the nation’s interest above other considerations in its handling of the dispute between it and ASUU and the National Association of Residents Doctors.

The commendation came through the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, who noted that the court had, on many occasions, saved the country from undue crisis through its deft handling of labour disputes.

Malami, who was represented at the special court session to mark the Industrial Court’s 2022/2023 legal year by the Head, Civil Appeals, Federal Ministry of Justice, Tijani Gazali (SAN), said: “Speaking of the court’s pronouncements in recent times, particularly in the wake of industrial actions embarked upon by both the National Association of Resident Doctors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, suffice to say, that, indeed, the legal status of any strike action, let alone a protracted one, raises very crucial questions of law, and the approach with which the judges of the National Industrial Court have dealt with the related issues, in making better provision for promoting harmonious relations between workers and their employers is quite laudable.”
