  • EFCC Condemns Caricature of the Commission by Skit Makers

EFCC Condemns Caricature of the Commission by Skit Makers

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has again condemned the illegal and irresponsible use of its operational identities for skit-making. The EFCC warned skit makers and social workers that it would not hesitate to bring to book anyone caught displaying its operational identities for any engagement.

This is contained in a statement by the Commission that condemned the video code-named ‘EFCC and Army Wahala’, which is regaining traction across social media.

The EFCC said it is a caricature of the operational etiquette of the Commission. It also described the act as a shameful characterisation of its Operatives and a deliberate attempt to cast shadows on its image.

The commission claimed that its operatives are not bullies, but rather trained as refined modern law enforcement officers “rich in decency, civility and respect for members of the public, including suspects of economic and financial crimes.”

  • APC’s victory in Edo proof people support my policies – Tinubu

APC’s victory in Edo proof people support my policies – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu said on Sunday that the victory of his party, APC, in the Edo State governorship election shows people support his polices.

The president said this in a congratulatory message to Monday Okpebholo, the APC governorship candidate in the election.

The message was contained in a statement by Mr Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

“President Tinubu commends APC national leaders, Edo State leaders, and party governors for working hard to achieve victory,” Mr Onanuga wrote.

“He says the victory testified to the people’s support for the ruling party, its progressive ideals, its economic reengineering programme and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.”

INEC, on Sunday declared the APC winner of the Saturday governorship election in Edo. Mr Okpebholo was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, having defeated other contenders for the position.

The ruling party in the state, PDP, came second in the election while the Labour Party came third.

The PDP has, however, rejected the result of the election alleging that the collation process was compromised.

The full statement by Mr Onanuga below:

President Tinubu commends APC national leaders, Edo State leaders, and party governors for working hard to achieve victory. He says the victory testified to the people’s support for the ruling party, its progressive ideals, its economic reengineering programme and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

He urges Mr Okpebholo not to gloat over his victory but to see it as a challenging call to service. He encourages him to demonstrate magnanimity by reaching out to his political rivals and uniting the people of Edo State to ensure its development.

President Tinubu also praises other candidates who participated in the election for their contributions to advancing Nigeria’s democracy, saying peaceful political contests, such as the one on Saturday, portray Nigeria as a stable democracy.

The president urges all those aggrieved by the election outcome to seek redress through the legal channels.

In addition, the president commends the people of Edo State for their orderly and peaceful conduct during the election, underscoring the maturing of Nigeria’s democracy after 25 years.

“I commend the INEC and our security agencies for working round the clock to conduct a successful, peaceful and largely hitch-free exercise.

“INEC has once again demonstrated that it is committed to organising a free and fair election in our country”, President Tinubu says.

  • Borno, Yobe suffer blackout again following vandalization of transmission line three months after repair

Borno, Yobe suffer blackout again following vandalization of transmission line three months after repair

Damaturu in Yobe state and parts of Borno state have been thrown into darkness as vandals suspected to be members of Boko Haram terrorist group have once again destroyed the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri transmission line just three months after repairs by the TCN.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported the destruction in a press statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Ndudi Mbah where it called on citizens to become more vigilant of suspicious activities around electricity infrastructure facilities.

According to the statement, the transmission line was brought down by vandals by cutting all four-tower footing and was noticed by the TCN around 01:44 am on the 21st of September 2024.

Furthermore, the company noted that its engineers will soon start work on dismantling and rebuilding the line.

The statement reads, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby states that its tower No T372, along the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV transmission line was brought down by vandals on Saturday, 21st September 2024, at about 1:44 am. This development has thrown the whole of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, up to Maiduguri in Borno State out of power supply.

“This time, the vandals cut off all four tower footings, resulting in the collapse of tower T372 along the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri section, which was discovered by TCN’s linesmen deployed on emergency patrol.

“Meanwhile, work will commence immediately to dismantle and evacuate the collapsed tower for reconstruction and restoration of the transmission line.”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stated that efforts are currently underway by its engineers to temporarily restore power to Damaturu through a 33kV transmission line from Potiskum, while Maiduguri will receive power from the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

In May, TCN reported that the vandalism of three electricity towers in Maiduguri, Borno State, had delayed the restoration of power to the North-East region.

In February of the year, the same Gombe-Damaturu and Maiduguri transmission line was destroyed by terrorists under the aegis of Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP). Similar attacks were also carried out on this corridor in December 2023.

Since 2009, the North-East Nigerian states of Borno, Yobe, and Yola have been a hub of terrorist activities, with Boko Haram once controlling an area the size of Belgium. In recent years, however, the group has been largely degraded and confined to the Sambisa Forest, though they continue to carry out sporadic guerrilla attacks on vulnerable communities and infrastructure.

  • CBN withdraws 2024-2025 Policy Guidelines over Misrepresentation, clarifies suspension of cybersecurity levy

CBN withdraws 2024-2025 Policy Guidelines over Misrepresentation, clarifies suspension of cybersecurity levy

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has temporarily withdrawn its biennial Monetary, Credit, Foreign Trade, and Exchange Policy Guidelines for 2024-2025 following widespread media misreporting.

This decision comes in light of misunderstandings surrounding the now-suspended Cybersecurity Levy, initially mentioned in the guidelines published on September 17, 2024.

In a detailed statement, the CBN clarified that the levy had been suspended since May 2024, following public outcry and a decision by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The CBN explained that the guidelines were intended as a reference to past policies and directives issued up to December 31, 2023, and not as new regulations.

However, some media outlets misrepresented the information, which has prompted the temporary withdrawal of the document.

The cybersecurity levy, which had its roots in the Cybercrime Prevention and Prohibition Amendment Act of 2024, was originally mandated by the CBN for collection by commercial banks, payment service providers, and non-interest banks.

These institutions were to remit the levy to the appropriate authorities to enhance the nation’s cybersecurity infrastructure. However, due to strong public resistance, the Federal Executive Council opted to suspend the levy during its last meeting in May 2024.

In line with the FEC’s decision, the CBN formally withdrew its earlier circular instructing financial institutions to collect and remit the levy.

This development was communicated to relevant stakeholders through a circular that superseded previous directives.

The CBN stated that the withdrawal was made to “minimize risk of any further misrepresentation” and ensure clarity in the nation’s cybersecurity framework.

The CBN emphasized that the primary aim of its biennial guidelines is to provide stakeholders with a comprehensive reference for monetary, credit, foreign trade, and exchange policies.

The document, the CBN noted, is not a collection of new policies but a compendium of previously issued directives and guidelines, meant to streamline access to policy information for stakeholders.

According to the CBN, the guidelines serve three core purposes. First, they act as a single reference source for stakeholders, allowing for ease and convenience when navigating CBN policy. Second, they serve as a basis for adjudicating policy conflicts involving stakeholders, providing a valid framework for resolving disputes.

Third, the guidelines offer additional clarification on CBN policies and directives, ensuring stakeholders understand and apply the policies correctly.

The apex bank reiterated that the provisions in the guidelines are only applicable to the extent that no updates or revisions have been made to the policies contained therein.

The bank further stated that recent amendments and revisions to certain policies—particularly in 2024—have rendered parts of the guidelines outdated.

The bank pointed out that, in line with previous editions, the most recent publication (January 2024) includes policies and guidelines that were in effect up to December 31, 2023.

While some of these policies will remain relevant through 2024 and 2025, many others will no longer apply due to subsequent revisions or updates.

This clarification is critical, the CBN said, to prevent further misunderstandings about the applicability of outdated policies.

Mr Archibong emphasized that the Governor’s actions weren’t politically-motivated but a demonstration of who he really is.

“If empathy or joy has a name, it would have been Pastor Umo Eno, because he always rises to the occasion whenever any Akwa Ibomite is in need.

“The Governor didn’t do this for votes or to lure you to join PDP; he did it because you are an Akwa Ibomite, and that’s how he has always been. He sent me here to ensure a proper handover of your renovated building,” he said.

In his overview of the project, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Humanitarian Services, Prince Nsikanabasi Umoekpo, narrated how the Governor returned from an official trip and went straight to commiserate with the family, instructed that her remains be exhumed and brought back to the State for proper burial and gave automatic employment to the deceased’s elder sister.

Prince Umoekpo revealed that the building was ready a month ago but the Governor insisted that it should be furnished before being presented to the family.

On his part, the deceased father, Mr. Frederick Edoho Edet, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his show of love and compassion during their moment of grief.

Also speaking, Abigail’s mother, Mrs. Veronica Frederick, who was full of appreciation to the Governor for coming to their aid, described the Governor as a compassionate leader who has wiped the tears of their family and prayed for God’s blessing on the Governor and his family.

The brief presentation which had in attendance the SSA on Special Duties who doubles as Team Lead, Inter Ministerial/Direct Labour Coordinating Committee, Barr Morgan Ekanem, featured goodwill messages from Stakeholders of the area including; the Member representing Eket in the State Assembly, Hon.
