6. Mrs Oluwakemi Fashina — Executive Director, Marketing. She is an integrated marketing communications professional and chartered marketer.

An exparte motion filed by the opposition party and one Hon. Aminu Aliyu Tiga through its counsel, Mustapha Idris Esq, N. A. Isa Esq and I. A. Alhassan Esq seeks the court to restrain the electoral body from conducting the elections and also grant an injunction order directing all parties to maintain status quo and stay all further actions or taken further steps about preparation and conduct of the election pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice by the court.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Simon Amobeda refused in an interim the applicant’s prayers, stating that the defendants shall be put on notice to show cause why the prayers shall not be granted.

The defendants in the suit include the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, the Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi, Kano State House of Assembly, Kano State Attorney General, Kano State Commissioner of Police, INEC, DSS, NSCDC and six others.

Copy of the court order sighted by Vanguard reads, “That prayers 1 and 2 are refused in the interim to the extent that the Defendants shall be put on Notice to show cause why these prayers shall not be granted.

“That prayer 3 is granted.

“That the time of hearing of the substantive Application is abridged to 5 days from the date of service of the Originating process and Order of this Court on the Defendants.

“That accelerated hearing of this case is hereby ordered, parties shall ensure that necessary processes are promptly filed to expedite the quick hearing and resolution of this matter.

“That no party shall do any act that will prejudice the hearing and quick determination of this matter.

“That Order of this Court and processes together with Hearing Notice shall be served on the Defendants with proof of same before the adjourned date,” the order reads.

“All pre-election matters will terminate at the Court of Appeal. I have zero tolerance for corruption,” she said.

Kekere-Ekun stated this on Wednesday after the senate confirmed her as the substantive CJN.

Her confirmation followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request in a letter transmitted to the Senate.

She had been acting in that capacity since August sequel to the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, her predecessor.

She arrived at the Senate chamber by 12:30pm in company of other Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices. The screening took about two hours as senators engaged her with questions bothering on judicial reforms.

During the session, Justice Kekere-Ekun said she would leverage technology to ensure quick dispensation of justice in the country.

She also pledged to ensure that the judiciary remains independent of external influence.

This is according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its August Transport Fare Watch. It said the increase signifies a 25 percent hike from what was obtainable in July 2024.

“In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N123,700.14 in August 2024, showing an increase of 25.51% while compared to the previous month (July 2024),” part of the report read.

“On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 56.56% from N79,011.38 in August 2023.”

The NBS said Niger State had the highest average prices of airplane tickets on a single journey. It put the price at N129,575.21 and is closely followed by Abuja with N129,442.67.

“Conversely, Zamfara recorded the least fare with N102,665.89, followed by Cross River with N120,088.93,” the NBS said.

However, the NBS said, “The average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop decreased to 7.77% from N942.61 in July 2024 to N869.35 in August 2024. On a year-on-year basis, it declined by 34.95% from N1,336.38 in August 2023.

“In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop was N7,159.00 in August 2024, indicating an increase of 0.59% on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,117.17 in July 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 20.97% from N5,918.18 in August 2023.”

“On state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,580.85, followed by Gombe with N8,349.26,” the agency added in the report published on its website.

“The least fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,574.46, followed by Ebonyi with N5,614.81. Zamfara state recorded the highest bus journeys within the city (per drop constant route) in August 2024 with N1,155.52 followed by Ondo with N1,065.20.” Channels TV

Ruth Ogunleye, a soldier who was discharged from the Nigerian Army following her allegations of sexual harassment against a senior officer, Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, has called on the military to share the findings of its investigation publicly.

In January 2024, Ogunleye took to her TikTok account, @Ogunleyeruthsavage1, to call out Colonel Abdulkareem, along with Colonel G.S. Ogor and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo, for making her service life extremely difficult. She said Abdulkareem repeatedly tried to assault her, administered injections without her consent, forcibly removed her from her home and held her in a psychiatric hospital for several months after she rejected his advances.

On Tuesday, September 24, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, addressed the media, claiming that an in-depth investigation, including an exhaustive review of the facts, testimonies, and evidence presented, concluded that Abdulkareem did not commit the alleged offences. He also claimed that medical evaluations at the National Hospital in Abuja showed Ogunleye had a condition that made her mentally ill.

Following this statement, Ogunleye called for transparency from the army saying:

It is no longer news that I was discharged from the service on June 15, 2024. I humbly request that the Nigerian Army publish the outcome of the investigation that led to my discharge. On January 9, 2024, I came on social media to complain about how I was harassed by Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo. I beg the Nigerian Army to post the outcome of the investigation on its social media platforms so that the whole world will know what truly transpired and what led to my discharge. I will be very grateful if my request is considered.”

She also called upon the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy, who encouraged her to write the discharge letter, to speak out about the situation.

She said, “I’m calling out the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy. You’re not just a mother, you’re a woman everybody respects so much. Please come out and say things as they are. Ma, you requested me to leave the job, and I submitted my handwritten voluntary resignation letter to you, which you gave to the Army, and requested that they release me to your office. The psychiatric doctors were there when you intervened.

“Come out and tell the truth, ma. Thereafter, the Chief of Army Staff called me on July 1, where he told me he converted my voluntary discharge to a medical discharge because you wanted me to benefit from pension and other entitlements. How was I boarded out, and where is this mental illness coming from?” She said, shocked that her discharge was tied to a mental illness.
