    First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has explained President Bola Tinubu’s support for Governor Peter Mbah Administration in Enugu, saying her husband would always support leaders, who judiciously deploy public funds for the common good of the people.

    Mrs. Tinubu made the revelation during the commissioning of the Technical, Vocational Education and Training College, GTC, Enugu, on the sidelines of her just-concluded two-day working visit to Enugu State.

    It is recalled that Governor Mbah Administration inherited a highly dilapidated Government Technical College, GTC, Enugu, which it demolished about 11 months ago to erect a Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College comprising twenty-four ultra-modern skill training centres and massive hostels for 1,000 resident students.

    The government equally built two Smart Green Schools in the quite expansive premises.

    Speaking during the commissioning, Senator Tinubu, who noted the increased federal allocations accruing to the states under the Tinubu Administration, stressed the need for leaders to deploy the resources in the service of the people.

    “I am really excited. Like some critics will say that Mr. President is really in support of the governor here. Now your allocation has tripled. The president will be happy to associate with the people, who are using the resources of this nation judiciously. And this is part of it. And we are excited.

    “The slogan for Enugu state is ‘Tomorrow is Here’ and tomorrow is indeed here. This is just a glimpse of a better tomorrow that our children and even generations yet unborn will enjoy,” she stated.

    In his remark, Governor Mbah said the project was the first of the eight Technical, Vocational Education and Training Colleges meant for each of the eight Federal Constituencies of the state to equip the youth with skills to shape the future.

    He explained that his government decided to break away from the outdated system of memorisation to experiential learning, stressing that no nation could be greater than its human capital.

    Mbah said that with the TVETs and other modern post-basic education schools being built, graduates of Green Smart Schools would sustain their upward trajectory in experiential and smart learning.

    “So, today is a great day for us. It is a launch further into our vision to transform education in Enugu State. We are profoundly honoured and delighted that you were able to make out time to commission the TVET, Government Technical College,” he stated.

    Giving further insight into the project, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, said TVETs were geared towards empowering the youth with skills and knowledge in response to emerging industry needs.

    “The new GTC Enugu is, which include ICT and Digital Innovation Hub, Renewable Energy, Weldieng and Fabrication, Auto-Mechatronics, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Electrical Installation, Fashion Design and Garment Making, Hospitality Training, and others equipped with twenty-four ultra-modern skill training centres.

    “It is supported by two massive modern hostels accommodating 1,000 resident students. The new GTC, Enugu, is a milestone realisation of an audacious vision, that enables a transition from the Enugu Smart Green Schools, into professional workforce and masterful skills development for the youth of Enugu State,” Prof. Mbah explained.

    Recall that President Tinubu had during his official visit to Enugu on 4th January to inaugurate some iconic projects executed by the Governor Mbah Administration also said he was more interested in performance than political affiliations.

    “He is doing a fantastic job. The election is over and we have to move the nation forward. You have demonstrated that irrevocable commitment towards human development. I don’t care which party you come from. You are my friend. You are doing well and very focused,” the president had asserted.

    Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has flagged off the Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign, an initiative of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development, OAFLAD, and global partners to eradicate HIV/AID, Syphilis and Hepatitis by 2030.

    Flagging-off the campaign at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Tuesday, the founder of the Renewed Hope Foundation, Senator Tinubu said the initiative was an imperative, since Nigeria bore the highest burdens of HIV infection in sub Saharan African due to her large population.

    “We launched the campaign in January 2025 and have flagged it off in five political zones of North Central, North East, North West, South South and South West. Today, we have flagged off the campaign in southeast to complete the Free to Shine campaign.

    “Our aim is to reduce HIV infection among women, prevent mother and child transmission and ensure that every child born with it gets the necessary treatment,” Tinubu said

    She thanked Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and his Wife, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah and the people Enugu State for the warm reception accorded to her and her entourage. During her two-day working visit.

    Throwing his weight behind the campaign, Governor Mbah, said his administration had taken health seriously because a healthy population is the foundation on which progress is built.

    “Here in Enugu State, we have aligned our healthcare priorities with the vision of the ‘Free to Shine Campaign.’

    “By September, we would have completed and fully equipped 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres in all wards — each with accommodation for health workers to ensure round-the-clock care.

    “We have also strengthened our secondary and tertiary healthcare systems and broadened access to health insurance and emergency services, especially for the most vulnerable.

    “These efforts are already yielding results — with a significant reduction in maternal, under-five and infant mortality.

    “But we know the work is not done. No health system can thrive in isolation or assume it no longer needs support. This is why we embrace the goals of the ‘Free to Shine Campaign’ — goals that seek to eliminate stigma, expand access to HIV treatment, and, most importantly, end mother-to-child transmission of HIV,” he stated.

    The First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs Mbah, commended Senator Tinubu and OAFLAD for providing leadership against the scourges of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

    “I commend the First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for demonstrating leadership and commitment to the health and well-being of Nigerians.

    “As 2023 data from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows, Nigeria has one hundred and forty thousand (140,000) children aged 0 – 14 living with HIV, with twenty-two thousand (22,000) deaths each year. This is an enormous public health burden with vast social and economic implications. So, the ‘Free to Shine Campaign’ is indeed a creation of necessity,” Mrs. Mbah said.

    She expressed total support for the initiative, noting that “collaboration is the driving force of change and development.”

    “When we collaborate, problems that seem intractable are solved. So, I am confident that the goals of this campaign will be achieved in Enugu State, in Nigeria – and across Africa. What is required is whole-hearted dedication,” she concluded.

    The event featured a general overview of the Free to Shine Campaign, by the Executive Secretary for OAFLAD, Dr. Nardos Berhanu, testimonials and experience sharing by persons living with HIV/AIDS, drama presentation by Members of the National Youth Service Corps, and goodwill messages by development partners, among others.

    Meanwhile, the Nigerian First Lady was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Ugosinamba (Precious Jewel/Eagle from another kingdom) by the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, citing her love for Enugu and service to the nation and humanity.

    Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been conferred with the chieftaincy title of “Ugosimba 1 Enugu” by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council.

    She received the title on Tuesday during her two-day working visit to the South East state.

    Conferring the title, alongside other officers, patrons, and members of the Council, the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, said the honour was in recognition of her love for Enugu State and service to the nation and humanity.

    “Our First Lady served in the senate for three consecutive terms and was honoured with the Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON. Nobody could say you were silent at the parliament.

    “The good news is the humanitarian part of you. We looked at the way you love Enugu State. We are thanking you for what you do for the midwives, for the nurses. Personally, I am a nurse too. I appreciate it when it comes to the less privileged, healing the sick, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry. So, we are here to recognise and appreciate all these good works you are doing. It’s only God that can pay you for your good work,” he said.

    An evidently elated Mrs. Tinubu, thanked the Government and people of the state for their overwhelming acceptance and love.

    She described Enugu as a peaceful state, saying that she felt inner peace since she arrived in the state capital on Monday.

    While also appreciating the royal fathers, she described the title as a special honour, not only to her, but also her husband, President Bola Tinubu, and the entire family.

    “Thank you so much for all the support you have given. Today is indeed a great honour to me personally and also to my family. I love your state; it is such a very peaceful state and a very peaceful ambience.

    “I want to thank Your Majesties for this honour done to me and also to my husband as well; and I know he will be very delighted and I believe the children too will be delighted.

    “It is not that I have not been given titles, but this one is quite special and I believe it is God-ordained. And as you have honoured me today, Enugu State will know it for good.

    “This moment will remain special in my heart and I will always remember your people for good and for the honour you have done for me. And this is not the end because our tomorrow is here already,” she said.

    Eight First Ladies and wives of ministers and heads of federal security agencies were on the roll call as First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, distributed 10,000 kits to midwives and nurses in the South East in Enugu on Monday.

    Those in attendance at the event, which was held at the International Conference Centre, ICC, Enugu, were the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima; wife of the Deputy President of the Senate, Hajiya Laila Barau; First Lady of Imo State, Barr. Chioma Uzodinma; Jm Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, Dr. Falmata Zulum of Borno State, Priscilla Otti of Abia State, Dr. Claudia Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, and Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun of Ogun State.

    Others were the wife of the governor of Osun State, Mrs. Titilayo Adeleke and Dr. Gloria Diri of Bayelsa State, while Benue State was represented by the Special Advisor to the Governor on Women Affairs, Scholastica Ben-sor.

    The event, according to Mrs. Tinubu, marked the last phase of a nationwide distribution of branded scrubs and 60,000 pairs of crocs across the six geopolitical zones to complement the ongoing nationwide training exercise for 120,000 frontline health workers by the Federal Government, of which 60,470 workers have already completed their training.

    “Since the initial launch in January 2025, we have distributed 50,000 scrubs and 50,000 pairs of Crocs to five geopolitical zones—namely North Central, North East, North West, South-South and the South-West.

    “The RHI recognises that the demands of the health profession require not only skill and compassion but also the right tools and kits to encourage our midwives as they serve others.

    “I officially hand over this professional kits comprising 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 pairs of Crocs to the National Primary HealthCare Development Agency for onward distribution to our midwives in the South-East Zone,” she said

    In addition, Mrs Tinubu announced a grant to support female petty traders in the state.

    “In the spirit of today’s event, the Renewed Hope Initiative will be presenting an additional grant of ₦50 million to the First Lady of Enugu State, with the sum of ₦50,000 each to support 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu State to recapitalise their existing businesses,” she stated.

    Speaking, the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, commended Mrs. Tinubu’s efforts, stressing that the empowerment of the midwives represented sanitation, professionalism, respect, and renewed public trust in the nation’s healthcare institutions.

    He said the state was ramping up the training of health workers to address the brain drain in the sector.

    “In response to the brain drain that has strained our healthcare workforce, we have taken decisive steps. Key among these is the successful elevation of our School of Nursing to collegiate status.

    “This means the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences, with four campuses, has the capacity to graduate 3,000 nurses annually. This is not just a statistic. It is a strategy — a bold stride towards rebuilding the backbone of our healthcare system,” he stated.

     

    In her remark, wife of Enugu State governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, commended the First Lady for her huge impact on the Nigerian society through the Renewed Hope Initiative.

    “Renewed Hope Initiative has significantly impacted countless lives across our nation’s diverse geopolitical zones. Your noble endeavour has brought succour and hope to communities that have long yearned for such intervention. Here in Enugu State, we are profoundly grateful for the transformative outcomes of the Renewed Hope Initiative,” she said.

    At another event, which held at the popular Michael Okpara Square, on the same day, the President’s wife, who was represented by wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, distributed food items to the vulnerable members of the society.

    Earlier in the day, the First Lady was at the House of Chiefs, Enugu State House of Assembly Complex, where she spoke about the Renewed Hope Initiative and canvassed national unity.

    Over 1.6 million pilgrims participate in 2025 Saudi Arabia Hajj

    Saudi Arabia on Monday announced the successful and peaceful conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage for the Islamic year 1446, with over 1.67 million pilgrims performing the sacred rites.

    The announcement was made by Prince Saud bin Mishaal, Deputy Emir of the Makkah Region, who praised the Kingdom’s leadership for ensuring the event was free of any major health, security, or service-related incidents.

    According to official figures, 1,506,576 pilgrims arrived from outside Saudi Arabia, while 166,654 were domestic pilgrims, comprising citizens and residents.

    Mishaal said, “Total pilgrims1,673,230, including 877,841 male pilgrims and 795,389 female pilgrims.”

    Prince Mishaal commended the efforts of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, attributing the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage to their leadership and the operational efficiency of the supporting agencies.

    “The pilgrims performed their rites in safety and peace, thanks to the distinguished execution of operational plans,” he said, also highlighting the pilgrims’ compliance with regulations as a key factor in the season’s success.

    He confirmed that planning for the next Hajj season would begin immediately, emphasising the Kingdom’s pride in its continued service to the holy sites and visitors from around the world. Punch

    I Would Have Removed Fuel Subsidy, Floated Naira in an Organised Manner – Peter Obi

    Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has restated his position on the removal of fuel subsidy, criticising the current administration for what he described as a haphazard and poorly managed implementation.

    In a recent interview with ARISE NEWS, Obi addressed growing concerns and criticisms surrounding his economic stance and opposition role, clarifying what he calls his “organised” approach to policy reform—particularly in comparison to President Bola Tinubu’s methods.

    “I have consistently maintained that I would have removed the fuel subsidy,” Obi said, pointing to his campaign manifesto. “If you go to my manifesto, it’s there. Steps I would have taken to do it in an organised manner. There was nothing wrong in the removal of subsidy. What is wrong is the haphazard way in which it was announced and implemented. Everybody knows that the subsidy regime was a solution of criminality. There was a lot of corruption, which they needed to out. Do it in an organised manner.”

    He added, “And since you’re doing it for savings, we’re told we’re doing it because we don’t want to continue to borrow, to continue the subsidy. And the removal of it will be able to have available funds to be invested in critical areas of development. With all these things, billions saved, where is it? Where is it invested in those critical areas of development?”

    Obi, who has maintained a strong base through his Obidient Movement despite factional rifts within the Labour Party, also weighed in on the controversial floating of the naira. “There’s nothing wrong with floating your currency. There’s nothing wrong in even devaluing your currency. But you do this when you have productivity. What devaluation or floating does is that your currency becomes, in terms of value, low. You attract investment. Your products become more marketable. But where we are unproductive, you have nothing to sell. So it’s a double whammy. So in all this, I would have done the same thing in an organised manner.”

    Pressed on how he would have managed both subsidy removal and currency floatation differently, Obi insisted on planning, transparency and gradual implementation.

    “The subsidy removes the criminality that’s associated with it, which is over 50% of it. Be able to sit down with the operators there and come up with a pricing that will be agreed. And then, whatever we’re able to save from it, have a specific place we’re investing it.

    “We will need to have a national planning where all the resources will be put in. It is not just something you say, oh, we are sharing it the way we used to share every other money. No, because that’s not what you said. You said, we will be able to put it in critical areas of development. That was your promise. So we’ve removed it. People want to see where these funds are invested. It’s a very clear thing. We’re not the only country who’s done that before. Countries after countries go with national plan.”

    On the naira, Obi further emphasised boosting local production before taking such monetary steps. “I would have focused on making sure that we ramp up production, the agriculture, the manufacturing, and everything, and do it gradually.”

    Recovered funds spent on education, civil service credit access – EFCC

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has provided clarification on how recovered public funds are being utilised, emphasising their contribution to national development initiatives.

    In a video by the anti-graft agency’s boss, Ola Olukoyede, he said that N50 billion from last year’s recovered funds was allocated to the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

    According to the EFCC, over 200,000 students have already benefited from NELFUND, receiving financial support to further their education.

    In addition, the Commission noted that part of the recovered proceeds has also been directed toward the establishment of Credit Corporations, designed to provide civil servants with easier access to credit at affordable, possibly single-digit interest rates.

    Mrs. Mbah’s message reads in part, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome our dear First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, on her two-day official visit to Enugu State from 9th to 10th June, 2025.

    “During the visit, Her Excellency will distribute professional kits to healthcare workers; launch the Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign against HIV/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis; distribute palliatives to the vulnerable in the state as well as commission the brand new Science, Technical and Vocational School, GTC, Enugu, built by the Government of Enugu State.

    “Your Excellency, we are profoundly grateful for your inspiring and selfless commitment to humanitarian causes, and are proud to be a part of your continuous empowerment outreaches.”

    Ahead of the Monday visit, Governor Peter Mbah has also published a message to welcome Mrs. Tinubu on behalf of the Government, while also appreciating the First Lady for her partnership with the state.

    Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has expressed deep grief over the death of music icon, ‘Gentleman’ Mike Ejeagha, saying the legend had created a void that would be too difficult to fill.

    Mbah described Ejeagha as an unassuming and easygoing personality, whose fanbase spread across international boundaries.

    Recall that the news of the passing on of the ‘Gwo gwo gwo ngwo’ crooner at age 95 filtered into public space Friday evening.

    Reacting to the sad development, the governor, who had celebrated the folklorist during his lifetime by reconstructing the popular Obinagu Road and the adjoining Chief Mike Ejeagha Crescent leading directly to his residence in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, a long wish of the icon left unfulfilled by successive administrations in the state, and by renaming Obinagu Road as Chief Mike Ejeagha Road in his honour, assured that his government would further immortalise the legend in death.

    “I’m profoundly saddened by the death of music icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.

    “I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company – the warmth and wisdom he radiated; the joy he found in the ordinary.

    Dangote names refinery access road after Tinubu

    Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has honoured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by naming the access road leading to the Dangote Refinery as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road.

    The announcement was made during Tinubu’s visit to the refinery, his first since assuming office.

    Dangote, while speaking on the group’s nationwide infrastructure projects, revealed that the company is investing N900 billion in road construction under the tax credit scheme, despite having paid N450 billion in taxes last year.

    Tinubu also used the occasion to commission the concrete road leading to the Lekki Deep Sea Port, as well as flag off Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Superhighway and the 25-kilometre 7th Axial Road.

    The new infrastructure links the Lekki port, Free Trade Zone, and the Dangote Refinery to the Sagamu-Benin Expressway via Ijebu Ode, further boosting connectivity and economic growth in the region.

    “It is a time for gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless mercies upon us as individuals and a nation. While this festival is marked with joy and celebration, its true significance lies much deeper: Eid calls us to reflect on its core values of sacrifice, devotion, and selflessness.

    “To truly honour Eid, we must embody these virtues, just as Prophet Ibrahim (AS) exemplified complete submission to Allah’s will and as our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has taught us. Let this sacred occasion renew our commitment to these ideals.

    “Eid-el-Kabir also reminds us of our responsibilities beyond faith: to show resilience, tolerance, compassion, and dedication to the progress of our beloved country.

    “I reaffirm my commitment to these values and express my deep appreciation for the faith, patience, and perseverance Nigerians show as we implement bold reforms. Together, we have weathered challenging times and are approaching a brighter horizon.

    “Though the journey has not been easy, and some doubted our direction, the resilience of public and private sector leaders, along with the steadfast support of most Nigerians, is yielding results. I assure you that the toughest days are behind us. We are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity that we promised two years ago.

    “We may not yet be where we aspire to be, but I urge all Nigerians not to lose hope. Let us hold on to our faith and persevere. Our reforms are gaining traction, with key economic indicators now moving in a positive direction. Soon, all will feel the benefits.

    “The ultimate objective of these reforms is not just to improve statistics but to transform lives and set Nigeria firmly on the path to sustainable development. There are no quick fixes, but we are committed to repairing the foundations of our economy once and for all. Our administration will continue acting in the nation’s best interest, ensuring that the gains we are recording translate into improving people’s lives.

    “We crafted our Renewed Hope Agenda to bring prosperity to every Nigerian, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of it. As we celebrate today, remember that Eid-el-Kabir enjoins love, compassion, and generosity for all, regardless of faith or background. Let us care for one another’s well-being during this season and always.

    “In this instance, I recall recent sad developments in our country, particularly the Wednesday, May 28 heavy flooding, which submerged the market town of Mokwa, Niger State, causing deaths and destruction of properties and creating an untold humanitarian crisis.

    “Let us pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and fortitude for their relations. Let us join hands with the government to bring succour to the people of Mokwa.

    “Finally, as we observe this Eid, let us continue our prayers for our front-line officers, who risk their lives for our safety and security.

    “Let us pray for our leaders at all levels and our country. Let us pray for peace in our tumultuous world of troubles and uncertainties. Let us dedicate this sacred celebration to seeking God’s guidance and blessings for our country.

    “May those who have more remember those in need, sharing kindness and support as true brothers and sisters. Let the virtues of perseverance, sacrifice, loyalty, faith, and shared humanity bind us closer.

    “May the joy and blessings of Eid-ul-Adha multiply in our lives and the life of our great nation. May Almighty Allah accept our worship and devotion as acts of Ibadah, and may His blessings be with us always”.
