Soludo Says Political Differences Have Not Affected Friendship With Peter Obi

    Precious Nwonu, Enugu

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has said his relationship with former governor Peter Obi remains cordial despite their disagreements over politics and economic issues.

Soludo made this known during an interview with BBC News Igbo on Monday, saying the two families maintained close personal ties even though they supported different political interests.

“Peter Obi and I are good friends. Our two families are on good terms. His wife gave birth to my child in the divine water, my wife gave birth to his child in the confirmation. But when it comes to politics, give me mine, give him his. It’s politics that is being done,” he said.

The governor explained that their political differences became evident during the Anambra governorship election, when Obi backed a candidate of his choice while Soludo pursued his own political ambition.

“He has someone he thinks should be the governor of Anambra. I am also listening. He supported the person he wanted. But I won by the grace of God,” Soludo said.

His remarks come amid renewed exchanges between the two politicians over Obi’s record as governor and the financial state of Anambra when he left office in 2014.

The relationship between their families also became a subject of public discussion in September after Obi said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children.

However, Daniel Ezeigwe, media aide to the Anambra First Lady, Nonye Soludo, challenged the account, explaining that she was the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter, while Obi’s wife, Margaret, was the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.

During the BBC interview, Soludo also clarified his controversial 2022 comments about Obi’s chances in the 2023 presidential election, saying he did not simply predict that the former governor would lose.

He explained that his argument was that Obi’s decision to contest as a third-force candidate would divide opposition votes, particularly those of the Peoples Democratic Party, and give the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Tinubu, an advantage.

“No, no, I didn’t say he wouldn’t win. What I said was that it is impossible for someone who is a presidential candidate of a party to not even write a letter saying he is running,” Soludo said.

He added that he had communicated his concerns directly to Obi before the election.

“In fact, I also wrote to him that his participation would take away a lot of votes from the PDP and make it easier for Tinubu to win,” he said.

Soludo further argued that bringing opposition parties together would not necessarily guarantee victory against an incumbent government.

“Even if you have a united opposition, it still does not guarantee you get to defeat an incumbent. But that is even the starting point,” he said.

The governor also recalled inviting Obi to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in March 2022 to contest the presidency.

According to Soludo, their initial discussions were focused on mobilising the Igbo people rather than simply pursuing political office.

“It was me myself who invited him to APGA so he could run, early March 2022 at Nnamdi Azikiwe University,” he said.

He added that political alliances should be built on prior consultations and a shared understanding of objectives.

“We deliberate first before going into an alliance before seeking power. You don’t just get power in Nigeria like that,” Soludo said.

In November 2022, Soludo published an article titled History Beckons and I Will Not Be Silent, in which he questioned Obi’s presidential ambition and declared that the former Anambra governor could not win the 2023 election.

“Peter Obi knows that he can’t and won’t win,” Soludo wrote in the article.

2027: Anambra Govt Urges APGA Supporters To Reject Obi, NDC

    Precious Nwonu, Enugu

The Anambra State Government has urged supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance to reject Peter Obi and his Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The government made the call in a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, accusing the former Anambra governor of working against APGA since he left the party in 2014.

The statement, titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA,” described support for Obi and the NDC as a threat to APGA’s political strength in the state.

“A vote for Peter Obi and the NDC is a vote to kill APGA,” the government said.

It alleged that Obi had been working to undermine the party that produced him as governor after his departure from APGA.

The government also contrasted Obi’s political position with that of President Bola Tinubu, claiming that Tinubu supported APGA while Obi backed efforts against the party.

“Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home. Resist the NDC,” the statement added.

Obi governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014 after emerging as the APGA candidate. He left the party in October 2014 and joined the Peoples Democratic Party.

He later moved to the Labour Party in 2022 and contested the 2023 presidential election, finishing third behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

Obi left the Labour Party in December 2025 and joined the African Democratic Congress before subsequently aligning with the NDC ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The latest exchange comes amid an increasingly heated political relationship between Obi and the administration of Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo.

The two sides have also been engaged in a dispute over financial obligations linked to projects implemented during Obi’s tenure as governor.

The state government said in September that Obi’s administration was associated with external financing valued at $123.77 million, with $92.35 million reportedly outstanding as of June 30, 2026, citing figures from the Debt Management Office.

Obi rejected the characterisation of the facilities as loans he personally obtained for the state, saying he neither borrowed from financial institutions nor issued bonds on behalf of Anambra during his tenure.

The state government has also challenged Obi’s claim that his administration left N2.1 billion in ecological funds, saying it could not establish that the money was held in the account and bank identified by the former governor.

The political dispute is unfolding as parties and political groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with APGA remaining the governing party in Anambra and Obi seeking the presidency on the NDC platform.

  • Court Rejects Suit Seeking Oduah’s Disqualification From 2027 Senate Race

Court Rejects Suit Seeking Oduah’s Disqualification From 2027 Senate Race

    Precious Nwonu, Enugu

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking the disqualification of former Senator Stella Oduah as the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate for the Anambra North Senatorial District in the 2027 election.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, in a judgment delivered on Friday, held that failure to possess a National Youth Service Corps certificate does not constitute a ground for disqualifying a candidate from contesting a senatorial election.

The suit was filed by an APGA aspirant, John Okechukwu Emeka, who challenged the nomination of Oduah by the party.

Oduah, APGA and the Independent National Electoral Commission were joined as the first, second and third defendants respectively.

Emeka, through his counsel, A.C. Ozioko, had alleged that Oduah provided false information to INEC in her Form EC9 in connection with her qualification for the 2027 election.

The plaintiff claimed that Oduah had stated in her 2026 INEC form that she had never presented a forged certificate to the commission, while allegedly stating in an earlier affidavit that she had lost her First School Leaving Certificate and NYSC certificate.

He further alleged that the authorities responsible for issuing the certificates had indicated that Oduah was not issued the documents.

The plaintiff also challenged Oduah’s NYSC record, alleging that she had not completed the mandatory national service and had relied on a letter from the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association in presenting her qualification to INEC.

The court, however, rejected the suit and held that the allegations of forgery raised by the plaintiff could not properly be determined through the originating summons procedure.

Justice Abdulmalik noted that forgery constitutes a criminal offence and would have to be established to the required standard of proof.

On the NYSC issue, the court specifically held that non-possession of an NYSC certificate was not a basis for disqualifying a candidate from a senatorial election.

The court also upheld arguments by Oduah’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, and APGA counsel, Ifeanyi Mberi, that issues concerning the former senator’s qualification to contest public office had previously been determined by an election petition tribunal in 2019.

The court further found that the suit was statute-barred because it was filed outside the 14-day period prescribed by law for challenging the nomination.

APGA submitted Oduah’s name as its candidate for the Anambra North senatorial election on July 7, 2026, while Emeka instituted the action on July 24, three days beyond the statutory period.

The court consequently dismissed the case for lacking merit.

The judgment comes as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 National Assembly elections, with INEC listing the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.

“I am excited to bring on board my years of experience in women and community development, healthcare, and a lot more”, she said.

She expressed her happiness to be in a party whose slogan is people oriented.

“I found in APGA, a party that recognizes competence regardless of gender. I am excited. We will restore Enugu to the place of pride that it’s meant to be”, Ugwuanyi said.

UPDATED: Soludo wins Anambra governorship election

UPDATED: Soludo wins Anambra governorship election

Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has been declared winner of the Anambra Governorship Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Returning Officer of the Anambra Governorship Election, Prof Florence Obi, announced the result on Wednesday morning at the INEC office in Awka, Anambra State.

“That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar said on Wednesday.

Soludo, who was the apex bank governor between 2004 and 2009, was declared winner after the November 6 election was declared inconclusive by INEC and after a supplementary election was held in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday. He won 19 of the 21 local governments areas including Ihiala LGA.

Sixty one-year-old Soludo won with 112,229 votes beating Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 53,807 votes, and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress who got 43,285 votes. Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party polled 21,261 votes came fourth.

Soludo’s walk to victory was paved with stony challenges including legal battles and intra-party squabbles but the Supreme Court in Abuja affirmed him as APGA governorship candidate. This was after the sacking of a former APGA candidate, Chukwuma Umeoji, by the court.

Umeoji, who is the current member of the House of Representatives representing Aguata Federal Constituency in Anambra State, was recently sacked by a court decision after his name had been listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission as APGA’s candidate.

The court then ordered INEC to replace Umeoji with Soludo as the validly elected candidate of APGA for the governorship election.

Also in April 2021 during the build-up to the election, Soludo narrowly escaped death when gunmen unleashed terror on him and his security aides during a town hall meeting in his hometown in Isuofia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

Three of his police orderlies were killed during the attack which he described as “senseless”. Soludo dedicated his victory to the three policemen in his acceptance speech on Wednesday.

Soludo is expected to be sworn into office next March after the expiration of the two-term tenure of the incumbent governor, Willie Obiano, who is also of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

  • Soludo, Oye comes out Victorious in court

National Coordinator, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Media Warriors, Chinedu Obigwe, yesterday described the victory of the Victor Oye leadership of APGA at the Kano Appeal Court as the triumph of justice over injustice.

In a statement issued in Awka, Obigwe said all lovers of APGA and good governance in Anambra State had waited for the victory because the court order procured from Jigawa State High Court was a “black market order that cannot withstand the test of proper judicial scrutiny”

He said the public should realise the fact that INEC cited court order as the singular reason that made it to publish Chukwuma Umeoji’s name as APGA candidate before now but with the latest development from the Appeal Court, Umeoji, in the eyes of the law, has no justification to lay claim as APGA candidate any more.

He noted that the decision of the Umeoji camp to further challenge the Kano Appeal Court judgment at the Supreme Court would amount to an exercise in futility, even as he expressed confidence that the Oye leadership, which duly nominated Soludo would meet them at the apex court and trounce them again with superior argument as against concocted tissues of lies.

“The latest judgment of Kano Court of Appeal is a law, and INEC as an unbiased umpire, is duty bound to obey the law and also do the right thing by publishing the names of Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Dr. Onyeka Ibezim as Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates of APGA for the November 6 election without further delay.

“For now, Soludo will kick off his campaign and we will channel our energy towards winning the main election because we have confidence in the ability of our legal team to handle the situation. The Court of Appeal, Kano division, sincerely gave a sound judgment that rekindled the hope of Nigerians in our judiciary.

“They are going to the Supreme Court, but we are going there to crush them with undeniable facts. Truth will always triumph over lies, hence, the reason I am confident that we will clinch another well deserved victory at the Supreme Court.

“As for me, it is now time to face the opposition parties squarely for Anambra people to realise fully that Soludo and Ibezim are the best for the state and without comparison,” he stated.

  • APGA denies endorsing Soludo as candidate for the November 6th election

All All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), yesterday, said it has not endorsed former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Chukwuma Soludo, as APGA candidate for the November 6 governorship election.

The party said it would conduct a free and fair primary for the November 6 governorship election which it described as inevitable.

APGA Media Warriors’ National Coordinator, Chinedu Obigwe, in a statement, said those talking about a plan to impose Soludo as the party’s candidate were deceiving themselves.

“Politics is a game of horse trading and that is what is currently going on in APGA ahead of the party primary.

“The only thing is that the governor foot soldiers are not happy with those that want to play spoilers’ role game against the party in the November 6 governorship election hence the reason they are doing the needful to checkmate them.

“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring the pretenders masquerading to be governorship aspirants in APGA are put to shame.

“APGA is poised to retain Anambra State by clinching a landslide victory in the forthcoming governorship election.“There is no plan to impose Soludo as APGA candidate for the election and my advice to those peddling the false rumour is to stop deceiving themselves.”
