Tinubu Calls for Suspension of Protests for Dialogue – Read Full Text of President’s Speech

BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY BOLA AHMED TINUBU, PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED  FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE NATIONWIDE PROTEST

    DATE: SUNDAY 4TH AUGUST 2024

    My fellow Nigerians,

I speak to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil and violent protests unleashed in some of our states.

Notably among the protesters were young Nigerians who desired a better and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled.

I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be again used to restore them.

I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence and destruction.

As President of this country, I must ensure public order. In line with my constitutional oath to protect the lives and property of every citizen, our government will not stand idly by and allow a few with a clear political agenda to tear this nation apart.

Under the circumstances, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity. Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all – regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation. To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry or such threats in the Nigeria we seek to build.

Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected. Our law enforcement agencies should continue to ensure the full protection of lives and properties of innocent citizens in a responsible manner.

My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation where each person may enjoy the peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihood that only democratic good governance can provide – one that is open, transparent and accountable to the Nigerian people.

For decades, our economy has remained anaemic and taken a dip because of many misalignments that have stunted our growth. Just over a year ago, our dear country, Nigeria, reached a point where we couldn’t afford to continue the use of temporary solutions to solve long-term problems for the sake of now and our unborn generations. I therefore took the painful yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress.

These actions blocked the greed and the profits that smugglers and rent-seekers made. They also blocked the undue subsidies we had extended to our neighbouring countries to the detriment of our people, rendering our economy prostrate. These decisions I made were necessary if we must reverse the decades of economic mismanagement that didn’t serve us well. Yes, I agree, the buck stops on my table. But I can assure you that I am focused fully on delivering the governance to the people – good governance for that matter.

In the past 14 months, our government has made significant strides in rebuilding the foundation of our economy to carry us into a future of plenty and abundance. On the fiscal side, aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over 9.1 trillion Naira in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023 due to our efforts at blocking leakages, introducing automation, and mobilising funding creatively without additional burden on the people. Productivity is gradually increasing in the non-oil sector, reaching new levels and taking advantage of the opportunities in the current economic ambience

My dear brothers and sisters, we have come this far. Coming from a place where our country spent 97% of all our revenue on debt service; we have been able to reduce that to 68% in the last 13 months. We have also cleared legitimate outstanding foreign exchange obligations of about $5billion without any adverse impact on our programmes.

This has given us more financial freedom and the room to spend more money on you, our citizens, to fund essential social services like education and healthcare. It has also led to our State, and Local Governments receiving the highest allocations ever in our country’s history from the Federation Account.

We have also embarked on major infrastructure projects across the country. We are working to complete inherited projects critical to our economic prosperity, including roads, bridges, railways, power, and oil and gas developments. Notably, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway projects will open up 16 connecting states, creating thousands of jobs and boosting economic output through trade, tourism and cultural integration

Our once-declining oil and gas industry is experiencing a resurgence on the back of the reforms I announced in May 2024 to address the gaps in the Petroleum Industry Act. Last month, we increased our oil production to 1.61million barrels per day, and our gas assets are receiving the attention they deserve. Investors are coming back, and we have already seen two Foreign Direct Investments signed of over half a billion dollars since then.

Fellow Nigerians, we are a country blessed with both oil and gas resources, but we met a country that had been dependent solely on oil-based petrol, neglecting its gas resources to power the economy. We were also using our hard-earned foreign exchange to pay for, and subsidise its use. To address this, we immediately launched our Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (CNG) to power our transportation economy and bring costs down. This will save over two trillion Naira a month, being used to import PMS and AGO and free up our resources for more investment in healthcare and education.

To this end, we will be distributing a million kits of extremely low or no cost to commercial vehicles that transport people and goods and who currently consume 80% of the imported PMS and AGO.

We have started the distribution of conversion kits and setting up of conversion centres across the country in conjunction with the private sector. We believe that this CNG initiative will reduce transportation costs by approximately 60 per cent and help to curb inflation.

Our administration has shown its commitment to the youth by setting up the student loan scheme. To date, 45.6billion Naira has already been processed for payment to students and their respective institutions

I encourage more of our vibrant youth population to take advantage of this opportunity. We established the Consumer Credit Corporation with over N200billion to help Nigerians to acquire essential products without the need for immediate cash payments, making life easier for millions of households. This will consequently reduce corruption and eliminate cash and opaque transactions. This week, I ordered the release of an additional N50billion Naira each for NELFUND – the student loan, and Credit Corporation from the proceeds of crime recovered by the EFCC

Additionally, we have secured $620million under the Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDiCE) – a programme to empower our young people, creating millions of IT and technical jobs that will make them globally competitive. These programmes include the 3Million Technical Talents scheme. Unfortunately, one of the digital centres was vandalised during the protests in Kano. What a shame!

In addition, we have introduced the Skill-Up Artisans Programme (SUPA); the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA); and the National Youth Talent Export Programme (NATEP).

Also, more than N570 billion has been released to the 36 states to expand livelihood support to their citizens, while 600,000 nano-businesses have benefitted from our nano-grants. An additional 400,000 more nano-businesses are expected to benefit.

Furthermore, 75,000 beneficiaries have been processed to receive our N1million Micro and Small Business single-digit interest loans, starting this month. We have also built 10 MSME hubs within the past year, created 240,000 jobs through them and 5 more hubs are in progress which will be ready by October this year.

Payments of N1billion each are also being made to large manufacturers under our single-digit loans to boost manufacturing output and stimulate growth.

I signed the National Minimum Wage into law last week, and the lowest-earning workers will now earn at least N70,000 a month.

Six months ago in Karsana, Abuja, I inaugurated the first phase of our ambitious housing initiative, the Renewed Hope City and Estate. This project is the first of six we have planned across the nation’s geopolitical zones. Each of these cities will include a minimum of 1,000 housing units, with Karsana itself set to deliver 3,212 units

In addition to these city projects, we are also launching the Renewed Hope Estates in every state, each comprising 500 housing units. Our goal is to complete a total of 100,000 housing units over the next three years. This initiative is not only about providing homes but also about creating thousands of jobs across the nation as well as stimulating economic growth.

We are providing incentives to farmers to increase food production at affordable prices. I have directed that tariffs and other import duties should be removed on rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, drugs, and other pharmaceutical and medical supplies for the next 6 months, in the first instance, to help drive down the prices.

I have been meeting with our Governors and key Ministers to accelerate food production. We have distributed fertilisers. Our target is to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land to grow what we eat. The Federal Government will provide all necessary incentives for this initiative, whilst the states provide the land, which will put millions of our people to work and further increase food production. In the past few months, we have also ordered mechanized farming equipment such as tractors and planters, worth billions of Naira from the United States, Belarus, and Brazil. I can confirm to you that the equipment is on the way.

My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear. I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens.

But we must not let violence and destruction tear our nation apart. We must work together to build a brighter future, where every Nigerian can live with dignity and prosperity.

The task before us is a collective one, and I am leading the charge as your President. A lot of work has gone into stabilising our economy and I must stay focused on ensuring that the benefits reach every single Nigerian as promised.

My administration is working very hard to improve and expand our national infrastructure and create more opportunities for our young people.

Let nobody misinform and miseducate you about your country or tell you that your government does not care about you. Although there have been many dashed hopes in the past, we are in a new era of Renewed Hope. We are working hard for you, and the results will soon be visible and concrete for everyone to see, feel, and enjoy.

Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let us choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. The economy is recovering; Please, don’t shut out its oxygen. Now that we have been enjoying democratic governance for 25 years, do not let the enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda that will set us back on our democratic journey. FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER!

In conclusion, security operatives should continue to maintain peace, law, and order in our country following the necessary conventions on human rights, to which Nigeria is a signatory. The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount.

Thank God — and Thank you for your attention, and may God continue to bless our great Nation. Thank you very much.

[BREAKING] Nationwide Protest: Man shot by policemen in Kaduna as hoodlums wreak havoc, attack journalists in Kano

An unidentified man has been killed by policemen in Kaduna according a video shared by News Central TV on their verified X handle.

In the graphic video, men of the Nigerian Police Force were seen shooting live bullets at protesters and as they took to their heels, an unidentified man was gunned down.

Meanwhile, hoodlums, armed with various weapons, on Thursday, took to the streets in parts of Kano metropolis, attacking shops and offices, looting property, and engaging in mob actions.

The marauding hoodlums were seen carrying off items such as office furniture, air conditioners, and metal signboards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a bus carrying journalists from various media outlets were also attacked along Sokoto Road.

The hoodlums used sticks and machetes to shatter the bus windows, injuring TVC and Leadership reporters with glass sprinkles.

Earlier in the day, protesters had gathered in front of the Government House, chanting anti-government slogans and calling for change.

  • PROTEST: The Right Thing at the Wrong Time for Enugu Youths—Young Fellows Initiative

PROTEST: The Right Thing at the Wrong Time for Enugu Youths—Young Fellows Initiative

With less than 24 hours to the August 1st hunger protest, one of the prominent youth organizations in Enugu State, Young Fellows Initiative (YFI), has appealed to the youths of the state to shun the protest.

The National Coordinator of the Young Fellows Initiative, Ozonwachukwu Johnkings, while acknowledging the valid reasons for the protest, stressed that “the right thing, when done at the wrong time, can sometimes lead to chaos rather than change.”

Ozonwachukwu, in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday, called on the youths of Enugu to consider the bigger picture and understand the need to refrain from participating in a protest that might derail the positive efforts of Governor Peter Mbah.

Highlighting some of the key achievements of Mbah’s administration, he noted that the protest could negatively impact the pace of ongoing work, emphasizing the need for reconsideration.

“We believe in the power of action, but we also recognize the necessity of timing. We face a critical juncture where the urgency of our initiatives must align with strategies that ensure effective and meaningful impact.

“We call for a thoughtful discourse on how we champion our causes. We urge our fellow youths to consider not just the importance of the issues at hand, but also the context in which we advocate for them.

“At the moment, our governor has turned our state into a construction site with numerous projects underway simultaneously. Some of these projects, such as the Enugu International Conference Center and Hotel Presidential, will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and we must not do anything that hinders this progress.

“To tackle the security challenges in the state, His Excellency is installing high-definition CCTV cameras and is also addressing the long-standing water crisis, with results already beginning to show.”

He cautioned against “hasty decisions that can undermine our progress. We seek collaboration, understanding, and deliberate action. Our generation is ready to lead, but we must do so with wisdom and awareness, ensuring that our actions resonate and reach those who need to hear them.”

While acknowledging the need for youths to press their demands, he further suggested that “we must be wise. For when we do the right thing at the right time, that is when true change occurs!”

  • JUST-IN: Ezeh-Led Enugu APC Youths Call For Dialogue, Reject Protest, Say One Year Insufficient To Judge President Tinubu

JUST-IN: Ezeh-Led Enugu APC Youths Call For Dialogue, Reject Protest, Say One Year Insufficient To Judge President Tinubu

    Chetanne Chinelo, Enugu

Sequel to plans to commence the nationwide protests against hardship and hunger in Nigeria tomorrow, the leadership of the Youth wing of the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, led by Hon. Chidiebere Ezeh have called on young Nigerians to shelve the idea of protests and embrace dialogue.

The youth wing arrived at this decision after an emergency meeting of the members drawn from the seventeen local government areas of the state, held on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at the state party office in GRA, Enugu.

Speaking with newsmen, Ezeh, who was a former Nkanu West local government council chairmanship candidate of the APC, dissociated the youth wing of the party from the proposed national protest and demonstration, declaring that the protest will not solve any problem rather, “it will impoverish the ordinary people”.

Mr. Ezeh noted that although the nation was battling a struggling economy, the situation could be salvaged with engagements and dialogue, explaining that President Tinubu has shown the will to steer the fortunes of the nation for good in one year.

In his words: “It is obvious that Nigerians are facing a lot of hardship presently which Enugu State is not excluded from. We agree with the fact that things are not easy, but we believe that you don’t solve such issues with violence. There are ways of settling issues rather than violence or protest.

“Therefore, all the Youth Leaders present today now agree that we will embark on consultation and dialogue with the Federal government rather than going for protest. We have agreed that we will not go on protest because one year is not enough for Mr. President to fix the Nigerian economy.

“We have expressed our grievances to the Federal government on issues and challenges bothering the youth constituency and other segments of the society in Enugu state and Nigeria as a whole.

“We just had a meeting with various groups. Since the government has promised to progressively address some of our grievances, we are saying no protest in Enugu State especially now the President has granted Local Government Autonomy which will bring the government closer to the people especially the rural dwellers”.

Ezeh reiterated their unalloyed loyalty to the Leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its Renewed Hope Agenda, and that of Chief Uche Nnaji Nwakibie, the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology.

Present at the meeting were the State Deputy Youth Leader, Hon. John Nebo among other youth leaders from the 3 Senatorial zones and 17 Local Government Areas of the State.

Earlier, the Deputy Governorship candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections, Barr. George Ogara met with the Enugu APC Youth wing.

  • Nationwide Protests: Organisers disagree with IG over confined protests, say they must protest on streets

Nationwide Protests: Organisers disagree with IG over confined protests, say they must protest on streets

Organisers of the planned #EndBadGovernance nationwide demonstrations slated for August have rejected a proposal by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun for confined protests.

At a meeting with the organisers on Tuesday, the IGP suggested confined protests in identified locations and advised against street rallies.

“It is not advisable to go on street processions because as you are planning a protest, some are planning violence,” the IGP advised.

However, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), a lawyer for the Take It Back Movement, one of the groups organising the nationwide protests, rejected the proposal of the IGP.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), other lawyers, civil society organisations as well as some arrowheads of the planned protests also attended the virtual meeting.

The planned protests against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, have been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja in August.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

The police, military and the Department of State Services had warned against Kenya-styled protests. Politicians, who surmised that the planned rallies might end up like the EndSARS demonstrations of October 2020, have continued to appeal to youths to shelve the planned rallies but the young people remain unfazed, doggedly insisting that the protests will hold.

Adegboruwa, one of the lawyers for the protesters, had on July 26, 2024, written the IGP to provide police coverage for protesters.

The IGP, in his response letter dated July 29, 2024, directed senior police officers to attend to the request of the senior lawyer.

Egbetokun subsequently requested to meet with Adegboruwa in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, “to deliberate further” on his request.

However, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria opted for a virtual meeting with the police boss, enlisting Falana, members of the NBA and others to attend the meeting.

Adegboruwa highlighted some of the points of convergence for the protests as Eagle Square, Abuja; Alausa Park, Lagos; Akpakpava Lane, Benin City; School of Agric, Bauchi; Rosewale Filling Station, Iwo Road, Ibadan; Maiduguri Roundabout, opposite State Stadium, Damaturu, Yobe State; Rainbow Roundabout and Pantani Stadium, River and Freedom Park, Osogbo.

In his speech at Tuesday’s meeting, Egbetokun said some persons calling for violence during the forthcoming protests have been arrested.

He warned against street processions which he said could be hijacked by fifth columnists and enemies of the state.

“Confining peaceful protesters to particular locations will help us a lot,” the IGP said, sounding the alarm that terror elements are looking to infiltrate crowds to wreak havoc.

After the IGP’s proposal, Adegboruwa said there would be street processions before protesters converged at specific locations sent to the police.

“Our letter to the Inspector General of Police indicates that there will be processions that will be guided to achieve peace during the protests,” he said, noting that leaders will also make speeches on the days of the protest.

Also, Adegboruwa said the attention of the police should be focused on thugs and groups threatening fire and brimstone. He said the organisers cannot give a specific number of people who would participate in the protests as Nigerians have been invited to join the rallies.

The senior lawyer assured the IGP that the organisers are not destructive.

Egbetokun subsequently said the police would provide security cover for protesters at confined locations sent to the Force Headquarters.

“I will not be able to guarantee security for your members if you embark on street processions,” the IGP said. “I believe that a peaceful protest in a confined location will be safe”.

The police boss quickly added that if Commissioners of Police in states across the Federation have enough manpower, they could deploy their men to guard protesters during street processions.

He advised the organisers to contact police top brass in their various locations to notify them of their requests for security cover during street processions and confined protests.

  • States, FCT APC Chairmen vow to resist ‘undemocratic forces’ as Nigerians prepare for protests

States, FCT APC Chairmen vow to resist ‘undemocratic forces’ as Nigerians prepare for protests

The chairmen of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have declared that they would not stand by and allow ‘undemocratic forces’ to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the guise of protest.

Addressing journalists at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, July 29, the party leaders, through the Cross River State APC chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, urged Nigerians to resist participating in the protest.

The posts and tweets on the protest carry different hashtags, ranging from #RevolutionNow, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, #TakeItBack, #DaysofRage and #TinubuMustGo.

However, since then, some state actors, including the presidency, military, SSS and police, have threatened the protest organisers, calling on them to suspend the plan.

Speaking against the protest, the Cross River State APC chairman who doubles as the secretary of the APC State Chairmen Forum said, “As the ruling party, we are prepared to meet every contestant in 2027 but we will not fold our arms and allow undemocratic forces to topple the government we worked so hard to elect into office. That will be a disservice to the good people of Nigeria who freely gave us this mandate.

“We call on all patriotic Nigerians to resist any attempt by anyone or any group of persons to intimidate them into unorganised protest likely to endanger the peace we currently enjoy as a nation. We call on patriots to join forces with security agencies to report any criminal element who attempts to carry out any act of violence.

“Against this background, in the next two weeks commencing from today 29th July to 11th August 2024 and from this press briefing, which shall follow with a solidarity rally by all structures of our party across all political wards, LGAs and states capital including Abuja FCT. We shall embark on peaceful rally to re-echo the laudable projects and the programmes of President Tinubu with greater vigour to protect and defend our democracy from any attack by hoodlums or some criminal elements who want to carry out violent protest,” he added.

He noted that the hunger protest would worsen the nation’s already challenging socio-economic situation.

“Protest is a constitutional right when done through the rule of law. However, security reports have shown that it is counterproductive to embark on this protest this time as there are sinister arrangements by some unpatriotic persons to hijack the protest for the sole purpose of unleashing nefarious agenda to perpetrate violence and indulge in high-level criminality reminiscent of the 2020 Endsars protest and the recent experience in Kenya.

“It is our humble view that this will worsen our already challenging socio-economic situation and that is why we have decided to join our voices to make this appeal to all Nigerians,” he added.

Recall that the Nigerian military accused the organisers of the planned protest of intending to replicate the recent demonstrations in Kenya, which led to deaths, destruction and drastic actions from the country’s president.

“The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation,” a Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said at a media briefing in Abuja, on Thursday, July 25.

The military’s stance aligns with the positions of a few other state actors, including the presidency and the police, who have also issued stern warnings against any protest.

  • Pursue Dialogue Rather Than Protests – NBA To Nigerian Youths

Pursue Dialogue Rather Than Protests – NBA To Nigerian Youths

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the government and the organisers and supporters of the planned hardship demonstration to call off the protest and embrace dialogue to turn around the plight of the Nigerian people for good.

The NBA also called on members of the National and State Houses of Assembly to immediately engage with their constituents based on the plans of government at the federal and subnational levels to address the demands of the people.

In a letter dated July 29th and signed by its President, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yakubu Maikyau, the NBA further recommended that a National Security Summit be convened, where serving and retired military, police, intelligence, and other law enforcement officers will assemble to reexamine the security situation, proffer workable solutions and implementation strategies.

“Traditional institutions and religious leaders should be co-opted and given specific tasks in this regard. Civil society organisations should be engaged at all levels of the proposed dialogue and in the monitoring of the implementation of the decisions that may be reached.”

The NBA President in the letter noted that the association has consistently called the government’s attention to the sufferings of the people and the need for the government to take clear and decisive steps to revamp the economy and get Nigerians out of hunger and poverty, caused largely by incidents of insecurity and corruption.

While noting that there is widespread hunger in the land, the NBA appealed to all Nigerians to put the nation first and hold back from any act that could have a devastating effect on the country.

Referencing the last #EndSARS protest, the NBA President highlighted the negative impact of the protest on the economy and instead called for the voice of reason to prevail now.

“Without trivialising the seriousness of our challenges and experiences and the corresponding right of the people to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, I would be complacent to think or assume that our detractors and naysayers may not either be interested in the planned protest or are directly instigating and encouraging the same”.

“It is against this background, that I most humbly appeal to Nigerians, particularly, those that have decided to embark on the planned street protest to have a rethink and take a second look at what could be the possible outcome of embarking on such exercise to our security, economy, and existence”.

“Our past experiences with mass protest are that they are usually hijacked by unscrupulous elements who use the opportunity to commit heinous crimes and thus turn an otherwise peaceful protest into a riot.

“Whatever we are going through right now, cannot be compared to the experience of civil unrest and the chaos that could ensue therefrom. Needless to mention nations that are currently going through wars with the attendant carnage and destructions. We do not even want to imagine what the experience would be, and we must forbid it.”

“My humble call and appeal, therefore, to both Government, the organisers and/or proponents and supporters of the planned protest, is to call off the protest, come together for a frank and sincere discussion on what must be done to immediately begin to turn around the plight of the people for good.

“Mechanisms should be put in place for government/people engagement on a regular periodic basis. Timelines for certain specific actions should be put in place and implemented as the circumstances dictate.

“We call on members of the National and State Houses of Assembly to immediately engage with their constituents based on the plans of Government at the federal and subnational levels to address the demands of the people”.

“We further recommend that a National Security Summit be convened, where serving and retired military, police, intelligence, and other law enforcement officers will assemble to reexamine our security situation, proffer workable solutions and implementation strategies.

“Traditional institutions and religious leaders should be co-opted and given specific tasks in this regard. Civil society organizations should be engaged at all levels of the proposed dialogue and in the monitoring of the implementation of the decisions that may be reached.”

Nationwide Protests: IGP directs DIGs, AIGs, CPs to ensure safety of protesters nationwide

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed senior police officers to protect participants in the #EndBadGovernance protests scheduled for August 1–10, 2024.

This directive was disclosed in a letter from the IGP, following a request by human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.

On July 26, 2024, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Adegboruwa wrote to the IGP seeking police protection for the protesters.

In a July 29, 2024, response letter, the IGP instructed top police personnel to proceed with the senior lawyer’s request.

The letter was signed by the IGP’s Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola.

The IGP also requested to have a meeting with Adegboruwa in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, “to deliberate further” on his request.

“I am to inform you that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) in charge of Zonal Police Headquarters and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in charge of State Commands across the country to attend to your request.

“I am to also inform you that the Inspector General of Police wishes to have a meeting with you at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 30th July, 2024 to deliberate further on your request,” CP Adenola said.
