    Minutes after a strategic meeting involving ousted Lagos State Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, Lagos State Attorney General Lawal Mohammed Alade Pedro (SAN), APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, and 38 lawmakers at the assembly garden, Meranda is now presiding over today’s plenary session.

    Obasa was noticeably absent as lawmakers convened, with some APC chieftains in attendance.

    The lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, says he has resumed as the speaker of the 40-member legislative assembly.

    “Obasa is the speaker,” he told reporters on Thursday afternoon on the premises of the House.

    Asked whether he has been reinstated as speaker, Obasa said, “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional but in doing that, you must follow the due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.”

    Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers loyal to the lawmaker, who represents Apapa Constituency I, Mojisola Meranda, rejected Obasa, insisting that Meranda remained the speaker.

    On Thursday, Obasa showed up at the Assembly Complex and was chaperoned by a retinue of armed, stern-looking uniformed security operatives as he walked into the hallowed chambers. Thursday’s appearance was Obasa’s first in the Assembly since his removal as Lagos speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025.

    In a show of solidarity, his supporters gathered at the entrance gate of the Assembly Complex, chanting and cheering on the lawmaker who represents Agege Constituency I in the 40-member House.

    Back in January, Obasa was removed as Lagos speaker when more than two-thirds of the house voted him out over alleged misconduct and sundry offences.

    Obasa’s then deputy, Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.

    Obasa was first elected into the House in 2007. He has been in the chamber since then. He emerged as a speaker in June 2015 before his removal in January 2025.

    On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Obasa rejected his removal and insisted that he remained the speaker until the right thing had been done. He faulted the militarisation of the assembly complex during the impeachment process. He also claimed his removal as speaker took place in his absence — when he was out of Nigeria.

    However, 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda insisted that Obasa’s removal was final and that Meranda remained the speaker of the House.

    On February 17, 2025, tempers flared at the Assembly Complex when security agents and some legislative workers clashed over the presence of the former in the hallowed chambers. Thereafter, thirty-six of the lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in an emotional Meranda and adjourned sitting indefinitely. Channels TV

  • Lagos Speaker’s security details withdrawn

    The ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly deepened on Thursday morning following the withdrawal of police escorts assigned to Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

    The decision has sparked widespread condemnation, with several groups decrying the action by police authorities. Many fear that the withdrawal has left Meranda vulnerable, exposing her to potential danger.

    “What exactly do they want? This woman did not impose herself on the House. Her choice as Speaker was a unanimous decision of the members. By removing her security details, they have simply exposed her to unnecessary risk. This is dangerous for our country and democracy. These political games must stop,” a concerned observer stated.

    Several women groups have condemned the move, describing it as an attack on women in leadership. They claim that Meranda is being victimized because of her gender.

    “This is happening because she is a woman. We know those behind this crisis, and they must realize that they cannot continue to suppress women in Nigerian politics. We are deliberating on our response, and when we act, they will understand that women, too, have the power to defend their own,” a leader of the women’s groups stated.

    Another woman leader, speaking anonymously, urged nationwide solidarity. “The time has come for all Nigerian women to unite and defend one of our own. Speaker Meranda has shown grace and leadership, but the men refuse to acknowledge it. Would they act the same way if she were their daughter?”

    Beyond gender concerns, many Nigerians have criticized the attempt to undermine the Assembly’s decision.

    “I pray they listen to reason before this situation spirals out of control. This is not democracy. Any true democrat would commend the Assembly for standing by its choice. If this continues, it may hurt our party,” an APC chieftain warned.

    Former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, by an overwhelming majority of the 40-member House over allegations of impropriety and high-handedness.

    Following his removal, members elected Mojisola Meranda as Speaker. However, powerful forces have allegedly turned the Assembly into a battleground in a desperate attempt to unseat her.

    While speculation suggests presidency-level involvement, Meranda and her supporters have remained resolute in their commitment to serving Lagos State.

    Gov. Eno Inaugurates new cabinet, assigns portfolios [See Full List]

    Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State on Monday assigned portfolios to new commissioners in the state, a few hours after he inaugurated the new State Executive Council.

    In a press release issued on Monday by the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Enobong Uwah, the former commissioner for Finance, Linus Nkan, is now the commissioner for economic development, while Emem Bob, who was previously in charge of economic development, is now in charge of the finance ministry.

    Mr Nkan, a former staff member of Zenith Bank, was first appointed finance commissioner by Mr Eno’s predecessor, Udom Emmanuel. He held this position for over a year in the current administration until Mr Eno dissolved and reconstituted the cabinet.

    Also, the former information commissioner,Ini Ememobong, has been moved to the Ministry of Special Duties & Ibom Deep Seaport.

    The new Commissioner for Information is Aniekan Umanah, a former member of the House of Representatives.

    Mr Umanah is returning to the ministry after serving as the information commissioner in the state during then-Governor Godswill Akpabio’s administration.

    Governor Eno retained the following commissioners in their ministries: Uko Udom, Justice; Offiong Offor, Agriculture; Eno Ibanga, Works and Fire Service; Frank Archibong, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Iniobong Ekong, Lands; Koko Essien, Internal Security & Waterways.

    Other commissioners with their portfolios are Ekem John, Health; Anthony Udoh, Transport; Iniobong Robson, Power; Nsikak Ekong, Environmental and Mineral Resources; Inibehe Etukudoh, Women Affairs and Social Welfare; Ubong Umo, Education; Frank Ekpenyong, Science and Digital Economy; Ubuo Ubuo, Water Resources and Sanitation; Ubong Inyang, Trade and Investments; Emem Ibanga, Humanitarian Affairs; Anieti Udofia, Culture & Tourism; and Ekerete Ekanem, Youth Development.

    The two special advisers in the cabinet are Kufre Udosen, who is responsible for political and social reorientation, and Alice Ekpenyong, who is responsible for cooperative and rural development.

    APC to build ‘befitting’ national secretariat – Ganduje

    National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has revealed that his administration inherited a whooping sum of N8.987 billion legal liabilities.

    Ganduje, while delivering his speech at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, explained that the liability amount; “ranged from legal engagements during the pre-election matters, election cases and appeals for legislative, governorship and presidential elections.”

    The former Kano State governor however made a passionate appeal to the presidency to give allocation for the building of a new national secretariat for the ruling party. 

    He said: “As part of the commitment to secure and own a national secretariat complex befitting of a ruling party and one that would conveniently accommodate our national officers, the newly established the Progressive Institute as well as the three wings of the party, we have formally applied for a land at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that will drive this project. May I therefore appeal for the kind intervention of Mr President for this project to materialise,” Ganduje pleaded.

    On membership drive he catalogued heavyweight politicians from the opposition parties to the ruling party, noting: “Another promise we are fulfilling is the improvement of membership base of the party. Today, we have in our fold the former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim who led prominent politicians from other political parties to join us, notably among them are: Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Ebonyi state, Edwin Nkwegu, Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Uche Ekwunife from Anambra state, and thousands of their supporters.

    “Also, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed for the formal engagement of Tunmef Global Limited for this exercise. The event was witnessed by some members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum led by the Chairman, Senator Hope Uzodinma of Imo state and some members of the APC Chairmen Forum led by their leader, Cornelius Oyefola Ojelabi, at the party secretariat,” he noted.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President, Goodwill Akpabio, Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas took part in the meeting.

    The notable incumbent governors in attendants include Edo, Monday Okpebholo, Ondo, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Benue State, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Ekiti, Biodun Oyebanji, Kaduna, Musa Sani, Nasarawa State, Abdulahi Sule, Yobe, Mai Mala Buni, Kogi, Usman Ododo, Ogun Dapo Abiodun, Niger Mohammed Umar Bago, Jigawa, among others.

    The list of the former governors present include Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, his Kebbi counterpart and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Kogi, Yahaya Bello, Zamfara, Bello Mattawalle, among others.

    Also present during the meeting include Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu

    Former deputy president, Ovie Omo-Agege, and other principal officers of the National Assembly, Ministers, among others.

    On the flipside, notable founding members and former political officeholders of the party like former president Muhammadu Buhari, his vice, Yemi Osinbajo and others apparently angry with the party were conspicuously absent at the party’s NEC held at the national secretariat of the party on Wednesday in Abuja.

    Other heavyweight party members notably absent during the meeting included former governors like Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers, Mallam Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna, Kayode Fayemi, former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, former Speaker and current Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, among many others.

    INEC releases timetable for FCT area council polls

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, scheduled to take place on February 21, 2026.

    In a statement on Wednesday, the commission said that voting would commence at 8:30 a.m. across all polling units within the FCT, emphasising that the elections would cover the six area councils in the nation’s capital.

    While urging voters to ensure they possess their PVCs to participate in the exercise, the commission confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) would be employed for the elections.

    “Only eligible voters with valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and whose names are listed on the voter register will be permitted to vote,” said the commission.

    INEC had said it would not conduct chairmanship elections for the six area councils in the FCT in 2025 due to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).

    According to the commission, instead of the three years specified by the Electoral Act of 2010, the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) provides a four-year term for chairmen and other elected council members.

    The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South East has elected a new zonal executive to man the affairs of the party in the region, with Chief Ali Odefa remerging as the Zonal Chairman.

    The election, which took place during the zonal congress of the party at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu on Wednesday also saw the emergence of Hon. James Ugwu as the Zonal Secretary, Mrs. Regina Uchebo as Zonal Treasurer, Hon. Cornelius Okey Ugwu as Zonal Organising Secretary, while Madubuike Okoro, Engr. Chigozie Igwe, Barr. Dominic Nwankwo, and Mrs. Ifeyinwa Arodiogbo were elected to the positions of Financial Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Legal Adviser, and Woman Leader, respectively, for the zone.

    Likewise, Godswill Nwanoruo and Ezeanya Augustine were elected to the positions Zonal Youth Leader and Auditor.

    Also elected were six National Ex-officio members and five Zonal Ex-Officio members.

    Speaking earlier, the Governor of Enugu State and Leader of the party in the South East zone, Dr. Peter Mbah, reminded party faithful that “election is never an end in itself and neither should the victory arising from it be construed as personal triumphs.”

    The governor tasked party faithful on setting the PDP as a template for good governance, insisting that “democracy abhors excuses – no matter how plausible they sound.”

    “We fully understand the demands and expectations of the people in a democratic setting. The bottom line is good governance. This is the ideal to which the PDP has committed to from its inception.

    “That is why, for us here in Enugu State, the people remain the centerpiece of government policies. The improvement of their welfare is not a task we regard with levity.

    “It reflects in our determination to ensure that the provision of basic services can indeed be taken for granted by the people.

    “Democracy is beyond the squabble for office and power. It is about the people. We cannot emphasise that enough,” Mbah stated.

    He further tasked party faithful on unity and reinventing the party to restore its past glory in the South East region.

    “The party’s greatness derives from its capacity to reinvent itself, and retain its national appeal in the face of challenges. The South East has always been a bastion of the PDP. We must ensure that it remains so.”

    In his acceptance speech, on behalf of the 21-member Zonal Executive, the Zonal Chairman, Chief Odefa, called for unity, saying it is the only guarantee of PDP’s victory over the ruling All Progressive’s Congress, APC, which it accused of bad policies and misgovernance that have caused sufferings in the land.

    Also in attendance at the congress observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai; the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; National Secretary, Hon. SKE Ude-Okoye, Senators Sam Egwu, Osita Ngwu and Augustine Akobundu, the party’s National Auditor, Chief Dan Obi; Federal and State lawmakers, council chairman, State party executives and other delegates from the zone.

    PDP says it didn’t conduct South South Zonal Congress

    The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that the party did not hold any Zonal congress in the South South zone.

    In a press release published on the party’s official X account, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, the PDP called on all party members in the South South Zone, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Security Agencies and the Media to “disregard any gathering or outcome of any such gathering in Calabar, Cross River State purported to be the South South Zonal Congress of the PDP”.

    The full press release reads:

    The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) @OfficialPDPNig has been drawn to a reported social gathering in Calabar, Cross River State, where the organizers falsely claimed same to be the South South Zonal Congress of the PDP.

    To the contrary, the PDP states in clear terms that it has not conducted its South South Zonal Congress neither is it in any way involved in the said gathering in Calabar.

    For the avoidance of doubt, the NWC at its meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2025 in exercise of its powers under Section 29 (2)(b), pursuant to Section 31 (2) (c) and (j) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) postponed the conduct of the South South Zonal Congress from the earlier scheduled date of Saturday, February 22, 2025 so as to allow for further consultation on critical issues relating to the smooth conduct of the Congress in the Zone.

    For clarity while Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution empowers the NWC to “in case of emergency, act on behalf of the National Executive Committee subject to the ratification of the National Executive Committee ”, Section 31(2)(c) expressly provides that the National Executive Committee shall “supervise and direct the work of the Party and all its organs including the National, Zonal, State and Local Government organs”.

    In the same vein Section 31(2)(j) empowers the National Executive Committee “…to make Party electoral regulations to govern the conduct of elections to all Party offices at every level and regulate procedures for selecting the Party candidates for elective offices”.

    For emphasis therefore, the PDP states that it has not conducted its South South Zonal Congress and it has yet to communicate a date for the exercise.

    The PDP calls on all party members in the South South Zone, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), @inecnigeria Security Agencies and the Media to disregard any gathering or outcome of any such gathering in Calabar, Cross River State purported to be the South South Zonal Congress of the PDP.

    Our Party will in due course and through its official channels communicate a new date for the conduct of the South South Zonal Congress.

    The NWC commends the PDP South South State Governors, other leaders, critical stakeholders and members of the Party in the Zone for their loyalty and steadfastness toward the unity, stability and growth of the Party in the South South Zone and the nation.

    Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State yesterday conducted local government elections in the state amid very low voter turnout, despite the warnings by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Inspector General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun.

    This is just as Adeleke commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the rule of law and allowing the elections, which were boycotted by the All Progressives Congress (APC), to hold.

    The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, has claimed that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force sealed the headquarters of the commission and arrested staff who were on election duty across the state.

    Abioye, who made the claim in a statement issued via the commission’s official X page explained that the development led to the commission’s inability to provide accreditation materials for journalists.

    Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clinched all the 30 chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats in the state.

    The state has been engulfed in a political crisis between the ruling PDP and the opposition APC over the local government seats in the state. The crisis escalated on Monday, leading to the killing of six persons, including an APC chieftain.

    The state government had blamed the crisis on the APC and former governor Gboyega Oyetola, now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.
    Adeleke had vowed that nothing would stop yesterday’s election from holding and urged the people to turn out en masse.

    Fagbemi had on Thursday called on Adeleke, to direct the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to call off yesterday’s local government election in the state.

    The AGF, in a statement he signed in Abuja, had warned that conducting a new local government council elections would not only be invalid but would also amount to a breach of the Constitution since the tenure of the purportedly sacked council chairmen was still running according to a recent decision of the Court of Appeal, Akure Division.

    Governor Adeleke cast his vote at Unit 9, Sagba Abogunde Ward 2, Ede North LGA at about 7:56 a.m.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the governor arrived at the polling unit in the company of his supporters and some members of the PDP.

    He commended OSSIEC for the peaceful process in the conduct of the elections.
    Adeleke advised residents to go out and cast their vote without any fear of intimidation, urging political stakeholders and the electorate to shun violence during and after the elections. He expressed confidence that all PDP candidates would emerge victorious in the elections.

    “I want to urge everyone to come out and cast their votes. The election will be peaceful”, the governor assured.

    Adeleke also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the rule of law in the conduct of the local government elections in the state.

    The governor, however, denied making any negative comments against the president.

    “I did not at any point utter any negative remarks about Mr President.

    “All the news articles suggesting that I made negative remarks against the president are fake.

    “I have been very supportive and collaborative with the federal government.

    “In my two broadcasts, I did not in any way attack the president.

    “I urge the public and stakeholders to ignore the fake news, as I did not attack President Tinubu in any way before and during the ongoing local government election,” he added.

    PDP Sweeps 30 Chairmanship, 332 Councillorship Seats

    Meanwhile, the Chairman of OSSIEC, Mr Hashim Abioye yesterday night announced that PDP candidates cleared all the 30 local government chairmanship and 332 councillorship seats across the state.

    According to him, “To this effect, by the power conferred on me as the chief returning officer of OSSIEC, I hereby declare them as duly elected chairman of their respective LGA.”

    The OSSIEC chairman noted that the LGA election has been successfully concluded in compliance with constitutional provisions, extant laws, regulations and guidelines.

    He said: “From the available result as obtained from the field, the candidates of the PDP in 332 wards emerged as winners, and I as the chief returning officer of the commission hereby return every one of them as duly elected councillors of their wards.

    “The election was conducted to fill the existing vacancies in 332 wards in the state and 30 LGAs of the state.”
    He affirmed that the elections were contested by 18 political parties and the result has been submitted to the commission.

    Election was Boycotted, Say APC, APM

     However, the APC and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) have stated that no election took place in the state.

    The state chapter of the APC last night commended the people of the state for boycotting the illegal local government council elections conducted by the “partisan” OSSIEC.

    The party expressed excitement with the massive boycott of the elections across the 30 local government areas and Modakeke Area Office, stating the reaction of the residents to the charade promoted by the government is a testimony that the people of the state are law-abiding, democratic and decent for standing with the rule of law.

    Similarly, the Osun State Chairman of the APC, Adewale Adebayo, berated the OSSIEC, claiming that there was no election anywhere in the state except in Ede, the hometown of Governor Adeleke.
    He said that OSIEC’s insistence on conducting the poll was to justify allocated money, describing the action as fraud.

    President Bola Tinubu has credited former military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for inspiring his political career, stating that without Babangida’s influence, he would not have ventured into politics.

    Speaking at the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service’, in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu praised the former leader for his progressive vision and impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.

    “Without you, people like me, I wouldn’t be in politics. Your progressive revolution, you said that you wanted young, brilliant people in politics. We were with you in Dodan Barracks, and you inspired some of us,” Tinubu said.

    Reflecting on Babangida’s legacy, Tinubu recounted how the former military ruler’s policies and decisions shaped Nigeria’s economic and political environment.

    He highlighted Babangida’s role in licensing new-generation banks, which transformed the country’s financial sector.

    “Thereafter, you announced licenses for new-generation banks. Nigeria has never been the same since then. You’ve made your marks,” he noted.

    Tinubu also recalled a personal encounter with Babangida during the transition to civilian rule, when elected officials, including himself, were awaiting inauguration.

    He described how he confronted Babangida over repeated delays in the process, fearing it would not happen.

    “I confronted you, saying that you had an opportunity to make history that day, and you think you did. Why not inaugurate us? Why are you calling us back and postponing the inauguration day? They thought I would end up in jail. But you came out, shook my hand, and I can’t forget that speech. You are courageous,” Tinubu recounted.

    The President emphasized that Babangida’s leadership and decision-making, despite controversies, were driven by a vision for national progress.

    He acknowledged Babangida’s role in shaping Nigeria’s political structure and expressed gratitude for his contributions.

    “I’m not here to read a speech; I’m here to pay homage and to say thank you for everything, for who you are, what you are, and what you have contributed to the history of this great country,” Tinubu said.

    He concluded by pledging to uphold the legacy of decisive leadership, promising to take bold decisions in the nation’s interest.

    “As President, all I can promise is to strive to do the best, put the best forward, and take decisions, no matter how difficult, in the interest of the country. You have done so, you have laid the example. Thank you very much.”

    Enugu Gov appoints Nana Ogbodo, Peter Nnaji, others, to LG Service Commission Board

    The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has made fresh appointments to the Local Government Service Commission Board.

    The appointments were contained in a letter addressed to the Enugu State House of Assembly, requesting confirmation of the appointees.

    According to the letter, Chief Nana Ogbodo is the Chairman of the Board.

    Others include Hon. Peter Nnaji as Member I, Mrs. Florence Ifenyinwa Igboji as Member II, Dr. Barthlomew Ikechukwu Ezeugwu as Member III, Ambassador Amaka Nweke as Member IV, and Osondu Henry Nnaji as Member V.
