Enugu 2023 Guber: PDP SE ZWC to meet with Guber aspirants, Tuesday

Enugu 2023 Guber: PDP SE ZWC to meet with Guber aspirants, Tuesday

    Chetanne Chinelo, Enugu

The Southeast Zonal Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has scheduled a meeting, Tuesday, April 19, 2022, with all Enugu State Guber aspirants running under the platform of the PDP.

The statement signed by Hon. Chief James O. Ugwu, Southeast Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), titled ‘Important Briefings to All Guber Aspirants From Your State’, dated 15th April, 2022, and addressed to the Enugu State Chairman of the party, Hon. Augustine Nnamani, was sighted by our Enugu correspondent.

    The statement read:

“You are kindly requested to inform all the Governorship Aspirants on the platform of our great Party – PDP from your state to attend a VERY crucial meeting with the south east Zonal Working Committee of our Party.

    Date: Tuesday, 19th April, 2022

    Agenda: Special Briefings.

    Time: 3pm

    Thanks for your usual cooperation”.

The Enugu State Governorship race has seen so many entrants under the PDP in a way that has never been since the return of democracy in 1999.

Presently, about 20 candidates are believed to have purchased the PDP’s nomination and expression of interest forms to run for Governor of the state.

These candidates, in no particular order, are Mr. Peter Mbah, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, Capt. Evarest Nnaji, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, Prof. Bart Nnaji and Hon. Ofor Chukwuegbo.

Others include Senator Gil Nnaji, Dr. G.O.C Ajah, Rev. Ralph Nwoye, Dr. Abraham Nneji, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, Mr. Godwin Ogenyi, Pastor Beloved-Dan Anike and Engr. Erasmus Anike.

Also, Prof. Jehu Nnaji, Prof. Hillary Edeoga, Prince Gilbert Chikwado Chukwunta, Barr. Nwabueze Ugwu and Dr. Josef-Ken Onoh are among the aspirants to have purchased the forms.

A party chieftain who didn’t want her name on print believed that Ugwuanyi’s silence isn’t helping matters.

“Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has not helped matters as his silence has continued to raise suspense and tension. The governor is yet to make a clear statement on the controversial issue of zoning and has also refused to show signs or body language of what to expect ahead of the party primary, as to where the pendulum could be swinging”, she said.

Presidency: PDP opts for indirect primary, may prune 17 aspirants

There are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party has settled for indirect primary to pick its 2023 presidential candidate on May 29.

It was also gathered that the opposition party was looking at ways of reducing its current 17 presidential aspirants by encouraging consensus talks among them so that some of them would step down.

Sources in the party, who spoke to our correspondents on Sunday, said the ongoing consensus talks among some aspirants were not aimed at presenting a single aspirant at the presidential primary of the party.

It was learnt the party had no plan to impose a candidate on members, but it was encouraging talks among intending presidential candidates so that some of them would voluntarily step down to reduce post-primary crises.

As of Sunday, members who had obtained forms for the presidential primary included the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; a United States-based medical doctor, Nwachukwu Anakwenze; media mogul, Dele Momodu; Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; Investment banker and economist, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel; a pharmacist, Sam Ohuabunwa, and former Ekiti governor, Ayo Fayose.

Others are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; a former President of the Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim and the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, as well as the only female aspirant in the race, Tareila Diana.

But four of the aspirants —Tambuwal, Mohammed, Saraki and Hayatu-Deen— have been going round the country with the aim of ensuring that the party presents a consensus candidate.

There were reports on Sunday that the option being canvassed by the four aspirants had failed as they had not succeeded in convincing others to support the move.

But a member of the party’s National Working Committee, who confided in The PUNCH, stated, “The party is in support of the move by the four aspirants. It is not to force anybody to step down, but to reduce the number of the aspirants we currently have to three or four before May 29 and from all indications, we are going to adopt indirect primary. ”

  • Yari, Marafa dump APC for PDP

Former Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari and Senator Kabiru Marafa have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following months of rancour within the ruling party in the state.

Zamfara State PDP chairman, Col. Bala Mande (Retd) disclosed this after a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau, the state capital, yesterday.

He told journalists that discussions on the defection of the former governor and senator had been finalised and that they had reached an agreement to work for the progress of the party.

“We have all agreed to work for the development of the party and the PDP in the state has welcomed them to its fold. We will ensure justice and fairness to all members even after we have won elections in 2023. The date for their grand reception to our party will be announced later, but we are going to implement all the agreements reached during the stakeholders meeting,” Mande said.

Publicity Secretary of Yari faction of the APC, Ibrahim Magaji, confirmed the development, but did not give further details.

“Yes, it is true we are moving to opposition PDP, and this is all I can say for now,” Magaji said.

Yari was among the aspirants for the national chairmanship of the APC.

Daily Sun also learnt that former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero is also expected to defect from APC to PDP in the coming weeks.

  • 2023: APC NWC divided over political appointees’ resignation

There are fresh fears that the All Progressives Congress (APC) may run into troubled waters as its leadership appear divided over decision to officially order political appointees at the state and federal levels to resign ahead of its primaries.

The party’s National Working Committee (NWC), in its last two meetings, had failed to reach a common ground on compelling appointees vying for elective positions in 2023 or aspiring to vote as delegates to resign their appointments.

A member of the NWC told Daily Sun that while some leaders of the party, including the National Chairman, Adamu Abdullahi, are of the view that a circular should be released mandating political appointees vying for various positions to resign, the National Legal Adviser, Ahmed El-Marzuk, has resisted the decision.

The source said APC governors were also notified to issue an ultimatum to their appointees aspiring to contest the 2023 polls to resign. It is believed that the notification had informed the decision of Ondo, Ekiti, Kaduna and Gombe governors to issue deadlines to their appointees to resign and focus on their political aspirations.

The NWC source, however, said El-Marzuk, who hails from President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state of Katsina, is opposed to the idea of officially issuing a circular, counselling instead that the party hierarchy waits until the Court of Appeal rules on an appeal filed by the National Assembly challenging a Federal High Court judgment in Umuahia on the matter.

The legal adviser is said to have cautioned that NWC members remain neutral on the matter in order not to incur the wrath of members of the National Assembly or some ministers in Buhari’s administration.

It was learnt that the issue of the resignation of appointees would form the thrust of discussions when NEC members meet in Abuja on Wednesday.

It was also learnt that Buhari, who had earlier instructed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami to explore other options, when lawmakers failed to amend Section 84(12) of the new Electoral Act, is unwilling to compel his appointees to resign, until the judgment of the Court of Appeal rules.

“Many NWC members are worried that the party could run into trouble if the expected judgment doesn’t work in their favour,” the source said.

Section 84 of the new Electoral Act stipulates that anyone holding a political office, ministers, commissioners, special advisers and others, must relinquish the position before they can be eligible to participate in the electoral process either as a candidate or delegate.

It state: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

The provision further states that where a political party fails to comply with the provisions of the Act in the conduct of its primaries, its candidate for election shall not be included in the election for the particular position in issue.

Within President Muhamamdu Buhari’s cabinet, those to be affected include ministers of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation,Abubakar Malam; Aviation, Hadi Sirika; Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu; Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva; Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

The power plant has generation capacity of 141MW but licensed to produce 181MW.

Due to Prof Nnaji’s drive for human empowerment and to really crystalize this, Geometric Power Ltd has its catchphrase as “…Empowering the people”.

Prof. Nnaji is the first black man in American history to be bestowed with the title of Distinguished Professor of Engineering.

Some of the beneficiaries are today distinguished lawyers, high court judges, academics and other professionals.

Prof. Nnaji has built houses for widows and paid school and medical fees for numerous orphans and other indigent individuals without ever letting such acts go public.

When the residence of the parish priest of St. Rita’s Catholic Church Umuode was burnt, Nnaji wasted no time in moving the priest to his own residence. Needless to state, he is the pillar of St. Rita’s Parish Umuode.

In Nnaji, one sees a human manifestation of the scriptural saying that there is no love greater than the fact that a man should lay down his life for the benefit of his people.

Apart from his overwhelming intellectual accomplishments and penchant for transparency and accountability in all his dealings, there is an aspect of Prof. Nnaji’s life many Nigerian’s do not seem to know: A life of sacrifice.

He lives almost entirely for others. He leaves no one in doubt about his ability to transform our economy and introduce sound leadership ideas to drive rapid development in all sectors of the economy, including job creation, agricultural revolution, improved security among other laudable initiatives.

It is no wonder therefore that a coalition of different concerned Enugu groups and citizens who have yearned for a paradigm shift in our political trajectory, taking a leaf from Anambra State, are calling on H E, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, all stakeholders, and the entire Ndi Enugu to support this great achiever, Prof. Bart Nnaji, to occupy the Enugu Lion Building in 2023.

  • FG deliberately frustrating efforts to end strike –ASUU

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government of deliberately frustrating efforts it was making to end the ongoing industrial action.

It said the failure of government to honour the 2020 FGN-ASUU memorandum of action (MOA) with a view to addressing the myriad of challenges confronting public universities has kept the strike alive.

Coordinator of ASUU in Owerri zone, Uzo Onyebinama, during a press conference at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) integrity test was 99.3 per cent yet the Federal Government refused to use it.

Other ASUU leaders at the briefing were Okey Aniebo (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University), Chinedu Ihejirika (Federal University of Technology), Odinakachukwu Ejiogu (Imo State University), Chike Ugwuene, (Michael Okpara University of Agriculture) and Steve Ufoaroh, chairperson (NAU).

“Another major outstanding issue is the reluctance of the Federal Government to deploy UTAS as a payment platform for the salaries and other entitlements of academic staff in public universities.

“UTAS is a brainchild of ASUU borne out of the patriotic zeal to improve financial and programme accounting in public universities, after it became obvious that the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System had contributed to and compounded corruption in public universities.

“UTAS is home-grown and is compliant with global best practice in the industry. It received a score of 99.3 per cent after remediation and conclusion of tests by the Nigerian Technology Development Agency,” Onyebinama said.

  • Nweke joins Enugu guber race, promises transparent leadership

Nweke joins Enugu guber race, promises transparent leadership

Nigeria’s former Minister of Information and Communications, Frank Nweke II, has declared interest in the Enugu State governorship seat.

Disclosing this on Saturday in Enugu, the two-time minister, who recently joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance from the Peoples Democratic Party, promised to serve with diligence, transparency and accountability.

He also said he was poised to contest the position, as his life’s journey had prepared him to serve Enugu people.

    Frank Nweke II

“It was my time at the community county council during which I visited the then 209 communities in Enugu that the seed of my passion for service was first ignited. I saw, first-hand, the primitive and agonising living conditions of our people and their deep yearning for the most basic needs of human existence. This state of affairs remains true even today, and the time to change it is now,” he declared.

According to him, Enugu is not immune from the multi-dimensional crises plaguing other states in Nigeria; but with its high youth population, the state is rather at risk of becoming an epicentre of the gathering storm.

His words, “We face urban fragility in our towns and cities, as systems are overwhelmed by the demand for jobs, social goods and services, as well as living fundamentals such as housing, transportation, an intractable water crisis, poor electricity supply and low Internet broadband access.

“An attendant surge in crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape and domestic violence, substance abuse, cults and gang-related violence are direct consequences of the high level of unemployment, hopelessness and general breakdown of law and order.”

Nweke, however, maintained that with a “clear vision, disciplined and transparent leadership and solid team”, Enugu would be returned to the path of progress and its position as the capital of Nigeria’s former Eastern Region and home to Ndigbo and Nigerians.

Disclosing that his team is already working out a clear roadmap to transform Enugu into a safe, smart, prosperous, inclusive and sustainable state, he said, “We are poised to make Enugu a 21st century success story in Africa, anchored on our values and ethos.”

He stated that his leadership “will prioritise and invest in women, youth, children and technology as key catalysts and foundations for far-reaching socio-cultural, political and economic transformation.”

It will also be intentional in closing gender gap and inclusive representation in governance.

“I have walked the markets of Enugu, knelt in the churches, driven on our roads, walked on our urban roads and village pathways, sat in children’s classrooms, spent time with our pregnant mothers, transport workers and vulnerable groups, shared memories with our weary and aged, had sessions with some teachers and pensioners (who are still unfortunately owed after decades of service),” he asserted.

Commending the efforts of the present administration in the state, he added, “There is so much work to be done. I have, therefore, come to the decision to run for the position of Governor of Enugu, only after very deep personal reflection and prayer, based on the unflinching belief that, given the chance, my team and I will elevate governance.

“My sole and abiding interest in public office is to serve, work for the wellbeing of the citizens, transform lives and leave a meaningful legacy.”

  • Ugwuanyi calls on Tambuwal, three other PDP presidential aspirants to ensure justice, equity, fairness

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has called on Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed, and two other presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Bukola Saraki (former Senate President) and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to ensure justice, equity and fairness in the electoral processes leading to the emergence of the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 polls.

Gov. Ugwuanyi made the call when the four PDP presidential aspirants visited him at the Enugu State Government Lodge, Abuja, on Tuesday, in continuation of their consultations towards the emergence of a consensus presidential candidate of the party.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, after a closed-door meeting with Gov. Ugwuanyi, President of the 8th Senate, Senator Saraki said they discussed how to strengthen the unity of Nigeria.

He added that they also deliberated on the future of the PDP and the possibility of a consensus presidential candidate of the party in the forthcoming National Convention.

Saraki disclosed that the push by some PDP presidential aspirants for a consensus candidate for the 2023 polls is not a northern agenda.

According to him, “When we started about three weeks ago, most of the aspirants we had then were mainly in the north. We were talking to the aspirants across the country. Now, because more people have come out in the South and we are all going to meet.

“All the aspirants are going to meet. We are talking about Nigeria. We are not talking about the northern aspirants or southern aspirants.

“I have good news that already, moves are being made by the aspirants in the South to meet and eventually we all meet and see one consensus, that consensus is a Nigerian that represent all the groups.

“So, I just want to be clear about that, and be reassured it is not about just issue of a northern consensus, not at all. It’s a consensus for the PDP and one Nigerian.”

Saraki added: “The most important ambition now is how to begin to fix Nigeria and put Nigeria on the right course.”

The four presidential aspirants have been consulting with PDP leaders across the country on the need for the party to present a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 polls.

  • 2023: I will hand over power to the youths

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to hand over power to youths if elected president of the country.

He said this during a meeting with leaders of over 200 support groups and the leadership of TeeCom across the country in Abuja, according to a press statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Atiku Support Organisation, Dr Victor Moses.

The statement was titled, ‘Atiku to work more with the youth and transit power to young generation says Atiku Support Organisation’.

Atiku expressed delight that more young people were now participating in politics, adding that he would mentor the young generation and hand over his political structure to them.

The former Vice-President was quoted as saying, “I will mentor you and hand over power to you.

“I would like to work more with young people because young people are more agile, creative, and conversant with contemporary opportunities and challenges.

“Our administration is going to be a transition of power from the senior generation to a younger generation.”

Atiku Support Organisation, however, urged youths to support Atiku, saying he they would have more opportunities under him.

The statement said, “His Excellency, Alh. Atiku Abubakar’s unreserved, passionate and unrepentant desire and commitment to work with the youth and hand over power to young Nigerians is a sure pathway to youth inclusiveness and the right direction towards building a modern Nigeria.

“His public and open commitment, the first of its kind in Nigeria’s political history to transit power to younger generation places him head and shoulders above all other aspirants seeking to govern Nigeria in 2023.

“A look at his antecedents clearly proves that his promises are not mere political rhetoric as he is known for raising young people into leadership positions. Many of his mentees are today serving as governors, senators, reps, ministers and in many other capacities.

“For decades, the youth, who are paying the ultimate price of the APC-General Muhammadu Buhari-led maladministration of Nigeria have been abandoned in the scheme of things in Nigeria. The truth is that no nation can develop without inclusiveness and productive youth. His Excellency, Alh. Atiku Abubakar promised to change the dynamic by working with more young people to enhance opportunities and productivity.

“We, therefore, call on all young Nigerians, delegates and non-delegates to rally around His Excellency, Alh. Atiku Abubakar to clinch victory as the PDP Presidential flag bearer in the forthcoming primary and return elected as the President of the federal republic of Nigeria in the 2023 presidential elections.”
