2023 Presidency should go to S-East — Obasanjo, Falae

ENUGU—FORMER president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has restated his position that the South-East should be allowed to produce Nigeria’s President in 2023, insisting that it would ensure peace, justice, fairness and sustainable national development in the country.

Similarly, former secretary to the Government of the Federation, Olu Falae, also threw his weight behind a South-East presidency, noting that it is the only zone that has not produced the president in recent times.

Obasanjo, who addressed members of Political Action Committee, PAC, of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who visited him at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, to solicit his support for the quest for a Nigerian President of South-East extraction, said the minimum Nigerians would accept is that the next president should come from the South.

Ime Obi Ohanaeze Ndigbo, at its meeting, last week, mandated its president general and the secretary to constitute a political committee to go around the country to solicit support for a president from the South-East.

The Ohanaeze team consists of Ambassador George Obiozor, the President General; Ambassador Okey Emuchay, the Secretary-General; former president generals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo, and Gary Igariwey.

Others are Professor Anya Anya, former Chairman, Police Service Commission, Simon Okeke, and Dr. Chiedozie Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“The next president of Nigeria must come from the South East. The least acceptable minimum is a president from the Southern part of Nigeria”, Obasanjo was quoted by Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia, as saying.

The former President, who commended Ohanaeze Ndigbo for demanding their rights, told the delegation that what he “owes Nigeria is sincerity, objectivity and guidance.”

He maintained the need for morality, equity and justice in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural country like Nigeria, warning that “it is inconceivable to have peace and progress in a country that is rooted in injustice.”

Obasanjo said: “Federal character, rotation of power and such other measures are meant to help our nation-building process and more sure-footedly, move Nigeria forward” and warned that “riding over these measures rudely, shoddily and roughly cannot augur well for our nation-building process and progress.”

In his remarks, Obiozor commended the former president for his unwavering commitment to peace and unity of Nigeria, saying that Obasanjo remains one of the strongest voices in Nigeria and one of the most respected Nigerians in the world because of his track records of accomplishments while his tenure lasted as the President of Nigeria.

He commended him for his courage, sincerity, steadfastness and passion for justice, especially as it affects the Igbo and the future of Nigeria.

For national unity, peace, it’s turn of S-East —Falae

Also throwing his weight behind a South-East presidency, Falae, who spoke in an interview, said the region has not produced a president in recent times.

The former Minister of Finance said: “I expect that the South East will have a fair chance to ask for the president of Nigeria because in recent times the president has not come from the South-East. I said in recent times.

“For national unity and peace, yes, but the South East is not the only zone that has not produced the president in recent times. There are six zones now and in the recent past, the zones that have produced the president are the North-West, South-West and South-South.

“The North-Central, North-East and South-East have not produced president in the recent times, so there are three that have equal rights to ask for it if we want to be fair

“If we want to use North and South, then it’s two (North and South) I insist it must come from the South because the present president is from the North.

“However, if we are talking of zones within the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, then we cannot limit it. We must look at all the zones that have not produced the president.”

Nigeria’s next President must be patriotic, detribalized — Onitiri

On his part, a socio-political activist, Adesunbo Onitiri, has said that Nigerians must select with caution, a patriotic, young, highly educated, Godly, and de-tribalised president during next year’s general election.

Onitiri, in a statement in Lagos, yesterday, said: “We democrats also urge all Nigerians to vote wisely, as this suffering and abject poverty must end. Our economy is at its lowest ebb. There is serious insecurity in the country.

“We need a patriot, young, highly educated, healthy, internationally connected President, who has the capability and ability to govern. He must be honest, transparent, credible, and diligent with the quality of a world-class President. Not a moneybag.

“Nigeria needs leaders like Mohammed bin Rashid of Dubai, President of Malaysia and President of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew. These people should be our role models. We desperately need leaders that can turn our economy around, turn our desert into a land flowing with honey and milk.”

Fulani group picks APC nomination forms for Jonathan – The Sun Nigeria

Nomadic pastoralists and the Almajari communities under the aegis of Miyetti Allah, yesterday, picked APC N100 million expression of interest and nomination forms for former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to contest ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

Led by the leader of the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, they had arrived the International Conference Centre around 6.35pm and presented the draft of the payment for the forms.

Speaking to newsmen after picking the forms, they boasted that with millions in vote banks, the return of the former president is a sure banker, describing him as the best person for the position.

“I represent two of the most vulnerable communities in our country. The nomadic pastoralists and the Almajari communities who have decided to purchase this form for our former president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to come back and rule this country and continue with the good work he has started.

“You may recall that during Goodluck Jonathan’s era he was the first president since independence of Nigeria who had found it expedient, who was magnanimous enough to remember the Almajari community; he brought a comprehensive policy of reformation and integration of the almajari into the mainstream educational system. It was the dream and vision of President Goodluck Jonathan that if that programme had continued it would one day produce from the Almajiri system of education doctors and engineers.

“Unfortunately, that programme was kept aside as soon as he left. Other parts of the community (the vulnerable community) that Goodluck Jonathan wanted to really give a sense of belonging was the Fulani community, the nomadic pastoralist.

“He set aside N60 billions in the coffer of the Central Bank of Nigeria which was to be used to develop livestocks in Nigeria. I believe that if government had continued with that programme, today, we would have been the Denmark, the Sweden, the Holland of the entire Africa in terms of livestock, in terms of beef and so on. Looking at this, situation and of course, the problems Nigeria today is facing, we believe that only a leader with that kind of patriotism, a leader with that kind of fairness who is ready to give every Nigerian a sense of belonging can rule this country and that leader is Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

  • Sycophant Osinbajo threatening to continue Buhari’s disaster, God will not allow him: Wike

Sycophant Osinbajo threatening to continue Buhari’s disaster, God will not allow him: Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike has slammed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for his campaign promise to continue President Muhammadu Buhari’s “legacy” if elected as president in 2023.

Mr Yemi Osinbajo, in his declaration speech, had vowed to build on Mr Buhari’s legacy.

“If by the grace of God and the will of the people, I am given the opportunity, then I believe that first, we must complete what we have started,” Mr Osinbajo announced in his declaration speech as APC presidential hopeful.

In a video online, the Rivers governor expressed his displeasure over Mr Osinbajo and others’ sycophantic statements that they will continue with Mr Buhari’s manner of ruling Nigeria.

“When I hear people declaring for APC, saying they want to continue the ‘good job’ of Mr president; the ‘good job’ of people dying every day, the good job of naira falling every day. I feel so ashamed that we have gotten to this level of sycophancy,” said Mr Wike.

The Rivers governor seeks to clinch the PDP presidential ticket ahead of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Further excoriating Mr Osinbajo and other APC presidential aspirants, Mr Wike said, “People will come and say I want to continue the ‘good job’ of Buhari. What is the ‘good job’ of Buhari?”

According to Mr Wike, hunger, misery, acute insecurity, and hopelessness have characterised Mr Buhari’s regime in the last seven years.

“Hunger is ‘good job’. Poverty is ‘good job’. Insecurity is ‘good job’. The economy falling is ‘good job’. It’s such a shameful thing,” the PDP presidential aspirant added. “I can’t believe that somebody in today’s Nigeria, somebody will say I want to continue where Mr Buhari stopped.”

Mr Wike stressed that presidential aspirants like Mr Osinbajo did not serve to rule Nigerians for the sole reason of “continuing where Mr Buhari stopped.”

“May God forgive you. May God never allow such people to continue,” Mr Wike

  • Tension in PDP over zoning, convention committee

Tension in PDP over zoning, convention committee

Barring any last minute change, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet on Wednesday to consider the report of its zoning committee headed by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

Daily Sun gathered that NEC, which would be preceded by a meeting of the National caucus would also take decisions on venue of the May 28/29 national convention to nominate its presidential candidate and as well the composition of the convention planning committee.

Tension has been mounting in the party following the recommendation of the zoning panel that the contest for the presidential ticket be thrown open. Stakeholders in the South, including governors, had kicked against the plan describing it as a violation of Section 7 (3) (C) of the PDP constitution.

Daily Sun gathered that ahead of the NEC meeting, party leaders from across the country, especially presidential aspirants have intensified consultations and lobby to ensure that decisions to be taken are in their favour.

It was also gathered that the PDP is considering holding the convention in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) or any of the states controlled by the party.

A source told Daily Sun that besides the issue of zoning, the other matter likely to generate interest in the meeting of the party organ is the composition of the convention planning committee. The source noted that since it was already obvious that the party is working towards throwing the presidential ticket open, aspirants are concerned about the composition of the convention planning committee.

“It is almost certain that the presidential ticket will not be zoned because a lot of our leaders believe that what is most important is winning the elections. So, attention is shifting to the composition of the convention committee.”

However, ahead of the NEC meeting, indications have emerged that members of NEC and Board of Trustees (BoT) are divided among the presidential aspirants.

Daily Sun gathered that there were concerns that discussions at the NEC meeting may be deadlocked because of the split.

The PDP presidential screening panel headed by former Senate president, David Mark, had cleared 15 aspirants to participate in the May 28/29 presidential primary. They include former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, Aminu Tambuwal, Nyesom Wike, Emmanuel Udom, governors of Sokoto Rivers and Akwa Ibom states respectively, as well as former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu.

Also cleared were former president, Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN), Sam Ohuabunwa; investment banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; Charles Ugwu; Chikwendu Kalu and Tareila Diana.

Already, members of NEC have taken strategic positions in the campaign organisations of the respective presidential aspirants. BoT and NEC members backing Atiku are former governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu; former minister of police Affairs, Adamu Waziri; Chief Raymond Dokpesi among others.

Former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh are amongst members of the opposition party’s NEC pushing for the candidacy of Governor Tambuwal. However, it could not be ascertained, as the time of filing this report if the chairman of the Tambuwal Campaign Organisation, Senator Tunde Ogbeha is also a member of NEC.

Similarly, Governors Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Abia and Enugu states respectively, who are also members of NEC, as well as former Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dakwambo, are among those campaigning Governor Wike while Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel has the former governor of Benue State championing his candidacy.

When contacted, the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin, told Daily Sun that he was indisposed and could not speak. However, a leader of the party, Chief Ebenezer Babatope told Daily Sun there was nothing anyone could do about BoT and NEC members backing different presidential aspirants.

“There is nothing that can be done about that. Except that we should pray for the BoT and NEC members, that they just be guided by all that is just and fair. That is all,” Babatope said.

Enugu: Coalition mounts pressure on Uche Nnaji to run for Governor, promise to purchase his forms

    Chetanne Chinelo, Enugu

The race to occupy Enugu’s Lion Building appears to have taken a new dimension following calls by a coalition to Chief Geoffery Uche Nnaji, Nwakibie, to join the race.

The coalition made the call on Friday at the Akpugo, Nkanu West LGA country home of Nnaji, while pledging to purchase the nomination and expression of interest forms of any party of his choice the moment he heeds their call.

At the solidarity visit, different speakers from different groups making up the coalition took turns to pour encomiums on Nwakibie, whom they described as a successful business man, a man of honor and a political interventionist.

Chief Geoffery Uche Nnaji acknowledging cheers from the crowd

Speaking, Ben Onyia expressed the worry of youths and villagers on the competence of the state’s governorship aspirants and hinted on their belief in his capacity to lead the state in the right way.

“Nwakibie, we are here to ask you to contest for the position of Governor. We believe that you will show the right course in leadership.

“We recall how you spearheaded a political intervention on the issue of Enugu state leadership in 1999 during your youthful days and we are convinced that temperamentally, you are equal to the task”, he said.

Supporting Onyia, Charlie Nwabueze spoke of the various positions Nnaji had occupied and how he made positive impacts in those positions, including when he contested for senate and won. He noted that Nnaji would be an iconic leader if elected.

Gabriel Ejim emphasised that Nwakibie “enjoys the full support of the people to contest”. He commended his peaceful and humane nature and urged him to continue his good works and acts of service.

Responding to the crowd, Chief Geoffery Uche Nnaji expressed surprise and gratitude to the people for such support and belief in him. He stated how happy he was that the people recognized the need for a positive impact in the state.

Promising to give an answer to their call in the coming week, Nwakibie declared that if the purpose of their visit was God’s will, it would come to pass. He emphasized on his resolution to consult God before making his decision

“I will still have to consult with my God, because God is the giver of power. God has the power, we don’t have the power. Nobody has the power to be President, Governor or even a councillor.

“However, my interest is energised by your presence today. I wasn’t expecting that people could come together to genuinely promise to buy forms for someone.

“You comprise of both the young and old people, people without access to water in GRA, the roads are in very sorry states, people are suffering.

“In those days when Enugu was Enugu, nobody spends money buying water. GRA had access to water 24/7, but today there is no adequate water supply.

“So, the moment God says “rise and shine”, I will rise and will tell you all. If we’re unfortunate that the form has been bought before my decision, then it’s God’s will. When God says “go”, then I’ll go”, he said.

Nnaji noted that there are different political parties to run on, like APC and APGA but certainly not PDP because “for 24 years running, they have remained the problem of this state”.

  • Senator (Dr.) Chimaroke Nnamani: A rare gem on a Divine Mission (Opinion)

Senator (Dr.) Chimaroke Nnamani: A rare gem on a Divine Mission (Opinion)

Senator (Dr.) Chimaroke Nnamani: A rare gem on a Divine Mission (Opinion)

    By Arum Chibuike (Ochudo)

According to William Shakespeare, “some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Chimaroke Nnamani is one of those rare gems that Shakespeare was referring to.

Whenever the Almighty God sends His beloved child for a special assignment here on earth, it is pertinent that the masses recognize such missionary journey and place premium value on the messenger because such opportunity comes once in a while.

Senator Chimaroke Nnamani was born a great man, nature demonstrated it by elevating him to the pinnacles of his medical and political careers in order to position him for the special task he has come to perform on earth.

However, it baffles me when some feeble minded persons attack the greatness of His Excellency, the former Governor of Enugu State, the progenitor of the Great Ebeano Political Dynasty, the man on a divine mission, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani. Usually, when mediocres feign ignoramus by making unkind statements against the grand master of modern Enugu State political engineering, I laugh and ask God to forgive such persons because they know not what they are doing. This must be the reason why Albert Einstein stated that “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Chimaroke Nnamani is no doubt endowed with the spirit of greatness, and negative attacks against him by a handful of mediocres is expected, though such frivolous punchs are usually dead on arrival.

Senator Nnamani’s journey to the Nigeria Senate has been very productive and symbolic, but only the intelligent minds can comprehend it. His voice is so loud in the red Chambers while carrying out his primary legislative assignment. He has influenced so many constituency projects in Enugu East Senatorial Zone which he represent, most of which have been claimed by some National Assembly members in his Senatorial Zone. Such claims does not bother him because it is needless and hypocritical to do so.

He is a silent achiever, he has executed many constituency projects and given jobs to many people without celebrating it, all because of his belief in the biblical injunction which says that “when you give alms, do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing.”

Needless to emphasize the fact that Senator Chimaroke Nnamani is a great human developer. Despite the fact that most of the men he groomed have turned against him, Nnamani is not deterred as he has continued to focus on his divine assignment of building men and women in every nook and cranny of Enugu State and beyond. Until date, he picks people from the bottomless pit of abandonment and clip them to their God designed destiny by giving meaning to their lives. This is the reason why his numerous beneficiaries call him “Destiny Helper.”

Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani is the man who has continued to insist that in Ebeano family, everybody is equal. It means that anybody can become anything irrespective of his or her social, academic and financial status. This attitude which he has demonstrated in every ramification has endeared him to the masses, thereby making him to command the highest number of followership in Enugu State as at today.

As the 2023 political journey is already in top gear, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani’s political expertise and guide cannot be taken for granted. His Excellency, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi should pay keen attention and tap from the wisdom of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani in the bid to nominate his successor. Nkanu people and indeed the entire Enugu State are lucky to have Senator Chimaroke Nnamani hale and hearty, to continue the good humanitarian services he was created to do for the benefit of mankind.

Concerning Enugu East Senatorial position, there is no vacancy as long as the mission of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani is ongoing. I do not expect that anyone who understands the worth of Chimaroke will dare to contest the elevated position with him, except those that have appointments with failure.

Let all the good people of Nkanu land and Enugu State in general rally round Distinguished Senator Chimaroke Nnamani in a bid to tap from his political wisdom, bound with cognate experiences for a harmonious political season and transition.

    Long live Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani!

    Long live Ebeano Family!!

    Long live Gburugburu!!!

Enugu State is in the hands of God.

Enugu 2023: Group Endorses Ifeanyi Nwoye for Governor

    Chetanne Chinelo, Enugu

As the 2023 primary elections of the Peoples Democratic Party draw near, an advocacy group with the mandate of job creation and self employment has called on the good people of Enugu State to elect business inclined leaders, with job creation mandates.

Speaking at a press conference held in Enugu, Friday, the group, Advocacy for Job Creation (AJC), a privately owned, non-profit, decentralized organisation, which is driven to monitor, assess, examine and track job creation, unemployment, under employment, growth dynamics of wages in the country, government performance on employment matters using the statistics of unemployment and the ease of doing business around the country, harped on the importance of electing a party with employment mandates, job creation, and the zeal for training youths on self employment.

They went ahead to identify and endorse Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye, a former Deputy Governor of Enugu State, as their preferred gubernatorial candidate.

They stated that their decision was based on careful consideration of his job creation record, experience, executive capacity, integrity and temperamental balance.

Nnadozie Kanu, an executive of AJC, bemoaned the statistics of the rising unemployment rate in Nigeria. He criticized the inaction and little action of some governments towards unemployment.

“Because of the inaction of the government towards unemployment, the group has taken it upon themselves to speak for the unemployed and cushion the effects of unemployment…”  he said.

He also didn’t fail to commend the government of the day in the state on its achievements towards giving skill acquisition trainings through agencies like SME and others.

Continuing, another executive went further to laud Rev. Ifeanyi Nwoye as the only candidate, out of all those vying for the top job, who is the highest employer of labour.

“For someone with a record like that, we agree that someone with a proven record of job creation and employment of alot of citizens is the best candidate for this position”, he said.

Part of the press statement read “Once again, we are at the season of intense politicking. Even more intense is the fact that 2023 elections is successive and transitional for Enugu State, and most other states throughout the country.

“Considering the relevance of the office of the Governor as the foremost executive office in the state, and its powers and responsibilities of creating employment opportunities, propelling the condition for better wages, and improving the general well being of citizens of the state, our advocacy partners decided to examine the credentials of gubernatorial aspirants in the major political parties, with focus on their job creating record for people in Enugu State.

“Having examined, and exhaustively deliberated on issues of job creation and overall executive capacity of different gubernatorial aspirants, we have decided to endorse The Revd. Ifeanyi Nwoye as our preferred gubernatorial candidate in Enugu State. Our decision is not a light one, but based on careful consideration of the following:

“Revd. Ifeanyi Nwoye has over time, created not less than 4,000 direct jobs and countless indirect jobs in Enugu State. The Ecumenical College under his leadership, recruits and trains between 300 to 400 people annually, providing direct jobs to graduands, and making people functional members of society.

“Revd. Ifeanyi Nwoye has a fine blend of experience in Private and Public service. He rose through the ranks of Christ Ascension Church Worldwide, to become its number 2 person, administering over 3000 branches of the church around the world, managing his private estate, served as Vice Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area, Chairman of Nkanu East LGA and coordinating Chairman of all local governments in Enugu State, Commissioner (Ministry of Environment), Chairman of Enugu State Pilgrims Board, and Deputy Governor. Also, the faith based organization under his leadership, runs Primary and Secondary schools across Enugu State and elsewhere around the world. In all of these, Revd. Ifeanyi Nwoye maintained stability and sense of direction in the discharge of his responsibilities.

“We believe Revd. Nwoye has the capacity to deliver on the mandate. With his educational background in Business Administration in the United States, a blend of his private and public sector experience, and vast international networks, Revd. Nwoye stands tall above other aspirants in the capacity to govern, create jobs, and attract substantial foreign investments to the state.

“We understand that Revd. Ifeanyi Nwoye has the integrity to function as Governor of Enugu State. All through his years in public service, he has never for one day been indicted by watchdog agencies for financial impropriety or misconduct at all. even any

“The Revd. has often shown his capacity to manage and balance competing interests. This is necessary to maintain stability in the state considering the nature of its politics, and to drive growth and development. Moreover, Revd. Nwoye has the temperament to maintain the peace cultivated by the current administration in the State”.

Fayemi to formally declare 2023 presidential bid Wednesday

The Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, will formally declare his 2023 presidential bid on Wednesday in Abuja.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti.

He said the declaration dubbed: “Unveiling My Nigeria Agenda,” will put to rest concerns about whether or not his principal will vie for President next year.

The state’s Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Hon. Akin Oyebode, had earlier revealed Fayemi’s intentions in a video posted on his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

He said: “The Nigeria of our dream is possible, a Nigeria that is the pride and joy of all, among others.”

The development has swelled the number of presidential aspirants from the South-West vying for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the party’s National Leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leading cast.

  • 2023: South should produce president –Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, yesterday, declared that it was the turn of the South to produce president in 2023 and so would be disingenuous for anyone to oppose power shift to the region.

Akeredolu, chairman, South West Governors Forum, stated this in a statement tagged: ‘Our party, APC, must tread the path of equity’ urged leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to make public the zoning arrangement.

Part of the statement read: “It is the turn of the southern part of the country to produce the next President. The party leadership should have no difficulty in making pronouncement on this very important issue, just as it has fixed various fees for the purchase of forms. This must be done without delay. The principle of Federal Character is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, as amended. It will be disingenuous for anyone to argue against rotation at this period.

“Our party, the All Progressives Congress, has started the process which will eventually culminate in the presentation of elected political leaders, who must steer the affairs of the country for another term. We have been able to hold the party’s convention successfully. New officers of the party have emerged in a process that was widely acknowledged as rancour-free. The level of understanding and maturity displayed by all and sundry has been commendable. Known adversaries have been forced to accept the emerging fact that our party is formidable and ready for the next general elections.”

Akeredolu who described the country’s socio-economic crisis as surmountable, lauded the Federal Government for addressing them without drama.

He assured that the Federal Government and leadership of APC would come out stronger in resolving the crisis.

The Ondo governor said the current democratic dispensation is anchored on the unwritten convention driven by a principle of equity. He said political expediency dictates that while adhering to the spirit and letters of the laws guiding conduct of elections and succession to political offices, nothing must be done to tilt the delicate balance against the established arrangement which guarantees peace and promotes trust.

“Our party just elected officers on the established principle of giving every part of the country an important stake in the political calculus. The focus has now shifted to the process which will culminate in the participation of our party in the general elections scheduled for next year. All lovers of peace and freedom must do everything to eschew tendencies which may predispose them to taking decisions which promote distrust and lead to a crisis, the end of which nobody may be able to predict.

“The leadership of the party ensured that the principle of rotational representation guided its decision at the just-concluded convention. The party chairmanship position has gone to the north. All other offices have been filled on this understanding. This is the time the leaders of the party must make a categorical statement, devoid of equivocation, on the pattern of succession.

“The party executive committee has fixed a fee for the purchase of the nomination form for the office. It is expected, fervently, that it will proceed to complete the process by limiting the propensities for disagreement to a region for possible micro-management. It is very expedient that we avoid self-inflicted crises before the general elections.

“We must not keep our party men and women guessing on the position of the leadership of the party. This is the time to weigh in and take control of the process. No statement must suggest, even remotely, that the party harbours certain sentiments which may predispose it to consider throwing the contest open. This is certainly not the time for equivocation. Equity dictates that we take a stand,” he said

  • PDP’s hope for smooth presidential primary under threat

PDP’s hope for smooth presidential primary under threat

The hope of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to hold a crisis-free presidential primary appear to have been threatened as the party and one of its presidential aspirants, Cosmos Ndukwe lock horn in court.

Mindful of the consequences of allowing the hearing of a suit filed by Ndukwe in a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to halt the primary election, the PDP approached the Federal Court of Appeal in Abuja to quash the suit.

The party challenged the authority of the Federal High Court to hear the suit. Ndukwe had asked the lower court to stop the party’s Primary Election Planning Committee headed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu from going ahead with the exercise after he was declared ineligible to participate in the primary. He was accused of anti-party activity.

Ndukwe specifically prayed the court to halt the presidential primary until his suit is determined.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/508/2022, filed as an ex-parte application, the Abia State Commissioner for Trade and Investments is also seeking the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South-East geopolitical zone.

Though the presiding judge, Justice Donatus Okorowo did not grant the plaintiff’s request, there was however a twist when he asked the party and the Primary Election Planning Committee to appear before the court on May 5 to show cause why the exercise should not be stopped at the instance of the suit brought before him by Ndukwe.

Not satisfied by the decision of the court, the Primary Election Planning Committee Chairman, Senator Anyanwu filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja praying that the order of Justice Okorowo be set aside.

Among others, the appellant, (Senator Anyanwu) claimed that the Judge erred in law by denying him fair hearing in breach of section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

He asserted that the originating summons of the plaintiff was not ripe for hearing and that the time for him to file counter affidavit against the suit had not lapsed when the Judge gave the order.

The appellant claimed that the court erred in law when it failed to advert its mind to the provision of Section 84 (15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, before making the order to show cause.

Senator Anyanwu further asserted that the judge erred in not directing the plaintiff to put him (Anyanwu) on notice but rather, directed him to show cause on an ex-parte application anchored on an incompetent originating summons.

“The learned trial judge erred in entertaining an exparte motion which seeks to stop the presidential primary election of the appellant without hearing notice,” Anyanwu had argued.

Anyanwu, therefore asked the court, in the Notice of Appeal filed on April 28, 2022, to allow the appeal and set aside the ruling of the Federal High Court asking the PDP to show because why the presidential primary election should not be stopped.

He also argued that Ndukwe’s originating summon was not ripe for hearing, adding that the time for him (Anyanwu) to file counter affidavit against the suit had not lapsed when the Judge gave the order.

Anyanwu further argued that the Justice Okorowo erred in not directing Ndukwe to put him on notice but, rather directed him to show cause on an ex-parte application allegedly anchored on an incompetent originating summon

…Focus On The Return Of Democracy In Nigeria from 1999

    By Nnamani Arinze Darlington

In 1998, PDP conducted her first presidential primary election which was held in Jos, Plateau State, North Central. During the primary election, Nigerians nominated former military leader, Olusegun Obasanjo who had just been released from detention as a political prisoner, to be the presidential candidate in the February 1999 general election, with Atiku Abubakar (the then Governor-Elect of Adamawa State and a former leading member of the SDP) as his running mate. The duo won the presidential election and were inaugurated on 29th May 1999. Subsequently, on 19th April 2003, Olusegun Obasanjo was re-elected with 61% of the votes.

In December 2006, Late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was chosen as the Presidential candidate of the then ruling PDP for the April 2007 general election. Yar’Adua was eventually declared winner of the 2007 general election held on April 21, and was sworn in May 2007.

In 2010, power shifted unexpectedly to Jonathan who assumed the role of Acting President following the doctrine of necessity after Yar’Adua fell ill; he was sworn into Presidency following Yar’Adua’s death in May of the same year.

Jonathan announced in September, his intention to run in the 2011 Presidential election, which he later got after winning the PDP Presidential primaries.

The South-south has no moral justification to contest now since the South easterners have not had its own share of the Presidential Pie.

In the 2015 elections, then incumbent, President Jonathan and PDP Presidential nominee (from the South South), was defeated by General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC with 55% against 45% votes, losing by 2.6 million votes.

    Why the Southeast?

From 1999 to 2007, Olusegun Obasanjo was the President and he hails from Ogun State in the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, while Atiku Abubakar who was the Vice President is from Adamawa, North East geopolitical zone. From 2007 to  2010, Late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was the President and he hailed from Kastina State in the North West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, while Jonathan, his Vice, was from Bayelsa State in the South south geopolitical zone. Between 2010 and 2015, Goodluck Jonathan was the President and hails from Bayelsa State in the South south geopolitical zone, while his Vice, Namadi Sambo, hails from Kaduna State in the Northwest geopolitical zone.

When the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum started a meeting, and were issuing communiques insisting and saying that the next President should come from the south, I initially thought that it was a good way of trying to narrow the Presidency to the South eastern Nigeria. I never knew that our brothers were just playing to the gallery, watering and making their ground fertile to contest against the South easterners when they are suppose to support us now than ever before, considering the political tension in the zone against marginalization and injustice.

PDP Presidential aspirants of Southeast extraction

Ohaneze and some of our Igbo political leaders who should be speaking up now like His Excellency Distinguished Senator Orji uzor Kalu, are silently observing table manners. Our silence in the face of ineptitude, our insincerity and acquaintances in the face of nepotism and favoritism, our complexity and “e no concern me” attitude  when things are going wrong is just something that is very appalling.

In all the political parties, big and small, there are Igbos of considerable weight, who want to be president. They include, Mr. Peter Obi, Fmr. Governor of Anambra State, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, Fmr. Senate President, David Umahi, Governor of Ebonyi State, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, Fmr. Deputy Governor Of the Central Bank of Nigeria, among others. They all have the capacity to lead this nation, but Mr. Peter Obi is seen as the most sellable and acceptable candidate, judging from his antecedents and his present ideology about Politics and Governance.

    Mr. Peter Obi

Aside the razzmatazz for Igbo Presidency by the South easterners, with the current security, political and economic state of the nation, Mr. Peter Obi is the one whom the presidential cap will fit best because he is a man with impeccable and exceptional character, finesse, incorruptible, panache, poise and astuteness with digital economic and political ideology that will salvage the current ugly situation of the Nigeria State.

Politics they say is a zero sum game in which the winner takes everything and the loser loses everything. That is why the Igbos can only get the presidency by aligning with other zones and pushing hard by any means they can to convince the majority. This is where the role of Ohaneze and the Igbo leaders come in.

One of the 68 Constitutional Amendment bills passed by the National Assembly recently was that which sought to allow for independent candidacy. If this bill scales through by 2/3 of the various States Houses of Assembly and the President finally assents to it, candidates like Mr. Peter Obi will never find it difficult to emerge and win elections, unlike the situation we have now where only those with bags of dollars are likely to win elections in Nigeria.

Nigerians should also know that “IGBO PRESIDENCY” is crucial to the survival of Nigeria beyond 2023, because denying Igbos 2023 PRESIDENCY will worsen secession agitations considering the tempo already attained, but the next President of Igbo extraction will calm nerves, settle scores and make the people feel among. The major Political parties should zone their Presidential tickets to the South East to prove her doctrine of justice, equity and fairness.
