No going back on naira redesign – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said there is no going back on the planned redesign of the N1,000, N500, and N200 bank notes.

In an interview with the NTA after meeting his Royal Majesty, King Charles III in Buckingham Palace, on Wednesday, Buhari said politicians won’t be allowed to mobilise resources and thugs to intimidate voters in the 2023 general elections.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, announced on October 26, 2022, the Naira redesign policy.

Buhari said “No going back. My aim is to make sure that Nigerians believe that we respect them as an administration.

“So, Nigerians should vote for whoever they like from whichever political party. Nobody will be allowed to mobilise resources and thugs to intimidate people in any constituency. That is what I want to go down in Nigerian history for as a leader.”

The president also said he met with King Charles III to foster Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom.

He said King Charles III asked him whether he has a house in the UK or not.

“He (King Charles III) asked me whether I have a house here (in the UK), I said no. I live in Nigeria alone, the only house I have are those I have before I got into government and I am not very much interested in having houses all over the place. I feel much freer when I have nothing,” the President said.

On the purpose of his visit to the King, Buhari said Nigeria is a large market and it is only wise for the business relationship between the two countries to be nurtured.

“Firstly, we are to meet with the king in Kigali but unfortunately, the meeting was postponed. He is interested very much in Nigeria, maybe because of Nigeria’s relationship with Britain for long, our economic strength, I think we are still of great attachment to them,” he said.

Buhari said the current monarch, who was crowned king after the passing of his mother, “speaks very well of Nigeria and wants the relationship to continue and if possible improve”.

He said “most economic, Nigerian businessmen and British men want to continue to work together. Let them make sure that the relationship is improved instead of being allowed to go down.

President had been on medical vacation and is expected back in the country this weekend.

Court sentences man for plotting with ISIS to bomb Nigerian church in US

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty in the Western District of Pennsylvania on September 16, 2021, to one count of attempting to offer material support to ISIS in connection with his plan to attack the said church.

The statement read, “Alowemer admitted to planning a deadly bombing of a Pittsburgh church in the name of ISIS,” said Olsen. “The National Security Division was created to protect the nation from terrorist threats and we remain vigilant against those who would plot violent attacks on US soil in furtherance of an extreme ideology.”

“The defendant’s plan to bomb a Pittsburgh church and risk death or injury to residents in the area in the name of ISIS was thwarted by the extraordinary work of the Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force,” said US Attorney Cindy K. Chung for the Western District of Pennsylvania. “Our office will continue to hold accountable individuals who threaten the safety of our communities.”

“I want to commend the great work of our Joint Terrorism Task Force, and that of their partners and sources, in successfully thwarting a planned terrorist attack in the name of ISIS,” said Assistant Director Robert R. Wells of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division.

“Alowemer’s plan to conduct an attack at a church in Pittsburgh and inspire other ISIS supporters in the United States was unsuccessful thanks to the efforts of law enforcement officials at both the federal and state level. This sentencing demonstrates the commitment we share with our partners to pursuing justice against those who violate our laws and seek to harm innocents in our communities.”

According to court documents, Alowemer plotted to bomb a church located on the north side of Pittsburgh using an explosive device. His stated motivation to conduct such an attack was to support the cause of ISIS and to inspire other ISIS supporters in the United States to join together and commit similar acts in the name of ISIS.

Alowemer also targeted the church, which he described as a “Nigerian Christian” church, to “take revenge for our [ISIS] brothers in Nigeria.” Alowemer was aware that numerous people in the proximity of the church could be killed by the explosion.

In furtherance of the plot to bomb the church, in May 2019, Alowemer dispersed several instructional documents related to the construction and use of explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to an individual Alowemer believed to be a fellow ISIS supporter, but who was in fact an FBI employee.

  • Ebubeagu Operatives abduct, assault Ebonyi PDP chieftain, Abia Onyike

Ebubeagu Operatives abduct, assault Ebonyi PDP chieftain, Abia Onyike

Operatives of the Ebubeagu Security Outfit, on Wednesday, abducted and tortured a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi State, Chief Abia Onyike.

The PUNCH gathered that Onyike, a former Commissioner for Information in the state and Deputy National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, was abducted at Octovia Pharmacy on Water Works Road, Abakaliki, where he was said to have gone to buy some drugs for his medication.

While in the pharmaceutical store, two hefty armed men suspected to be Ebebeagu members walked in there, bundled him into their Sienna bus, and whisked him away.

The victim, who is a key spokesperson for the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general election in Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Odii, was reportedly taken to Ebubeagu Office in Abakaliki, where he was ordered to remove his clothes and brutally beaten up, until a call came for his release.

Reacting, the Ebebuagu Commander in the state, Friday Nnanna, said Onyike’s arrest was mistakenly done as he was arrested in the location where a suspect was being trailed.

According to him, “Immediately after his name, place of origin and personality was ascertained, he was released.

“The place they said Abia was caught was where a criminal element we have been looking usually stay. Oga, we have satellite everywhere. That’s where the suspect usually come to collect arms and ammunition and rifles kept for him. He normally comes from outside the State.

“You can asked the victim what we did immediately he was asked his name, and where he came from; We ordered them to leave him immediately. People have been putting surveillance where he was arrested. ”

Narrating his ordeal to The PUNCH, Onyike said he was given over 30 slaps, while laying down naked and planks and other weapons used on him by the operatives.

He said, “As I talk to you now, I can’t hear well with my one of my ears. I was slapped over 30 times. They asked me to lay down naked and beat me up severally with different dangerous objects.

“They even threatened to shoot me and bury me there. I can’t hear well again.

“They tortured me for over one hour, until some minutes to 11pm when one of them came and said I should be released, that it was a mistaken identity.”

Twitter: FG says platform’s ownership change being monitored

The Federal Government has said it is monitoring developments around the change of ownership of micro-blogging platform, Twitter, following its takeover by a new owner — Elon Musk.

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the government’s position known at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

The Minister said the suspension of the platform last year was due to the penchant by some elements to use it to destabilise Nigeria via fake news, disinformation and hate speech.

Mohammed warned that the government does not intend to ban any media from performing its duties. But that it would also not allow any platform to be used to plunge the country into anarchy.

The minister said: “Many have called to ask us what will become of our agreement with Twitter in view of the change in its ownership.

“Many have asked for our reaction following reports that there has been a spike in fake news, disinformation and hate speech since the micro-blogging site changed ownership.

“Many have even asked us if another ban is in the offing?

“Let me say this: We are closely monitoring the evolving developments at Twitter. It has never been our intention to ban any social media platform or stifle free speech. Not at all.

“What happened in the case of Twitter is well known to all. Twitter became a platform of choice for those who want to destabilise Nigeria, using fake news, disinformation and hate speech.

“No nation will allow any social media platform to plunge it into anarchy. Definitely not Nigeria.

“But we have continued to engage positively with the different social media platforms, including Facebook, Google (owners of YouTube) and Twitter.

“We have no intention of banning any social media platform again. But we will also not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis,” the minister said.

  • Outrage trails attack on Atiku’s campaign convoy in Borno

Outrage trails attack on Atiku’s campaign convoy in Borno

OUTRAGE was the word, yesterday, as scores of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, were injured when hoodlums, attacked their convoy in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The reporter gathered that Atiku’s convoy was attacked just as he left the Palace of the Shehu of Borno to Ramat Square, venue of the presidential rally.

The injured persons have since been rushed to hospitals in the state capital.

Minutes before the presidential candidate took to the stage, the spokesperson of the Atiku’s campaign council, Dino Melaye, announced that the convoy of the campaign council was attacked and no fewer than 174 supporters were injured in the process, while over 100 vehicles in the convoy were vandalised.

He accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of trying to stop their campaign in the state by deploying thugs to attack them.

He said: “They deployed their thugs to attack our convoys with stones, sticks, machetes as we left the Shehu’s Palace to come to the Ramat Square, all in an attempt to stop our rally.”

Dino lamented that the “thugs were deployed to many strategic locations to attack our supporters. But we want to assure them that nobody can stop us.”

The attack elicited condemnations from Arewa Constultative Forum, ACF, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, MBF, Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and Chief Akin Osuntokun, who warned that the development could hurt the 2023 general polls. The outrage came as Borno State Police and the APC debunked the attack with the police saying it provided security for the campaign convoy and ensured peace all through the campaign.

Atiku laments growing APC attacks on PDP rallies

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar specifically raised alarm over what he said appears to be an orchestrated attack on PDP campaign rallies by suspected thugs engaged by the APC.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, the PDP flagbearer explained that the presidential campaign rally of the PDP held in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital was the first to be held in the North-East region, where he hails from.

He lamented that hoodlums wielding APC’s flag attacked the convoy of vehicles conveying dignitaries to the venue, saying: “It is rather unfortunate that the APC in Borno State mobilized some of its members to attack the convoy carrying dignitaries who had earlier paid a courtesy visit at the Shehu of Borno palace to the venue of the rally.

“While it is well understood that such barbaric behaviour is typical of the APC, it must be noted that, this time around, it is specifically the last kick of a dying horse. The APC, apparently overwhelmed by the large turn-out of supporters to greet our presidential candidate, resorted to anti-democratic actions to scare the crowd away from the rally.”

INEC successfully delivers BVAS to 27 States

It said the choice to store the materials in the custody of the apex bank was agreed by critical stakeholders recently.

National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, stated this while appearing on an interactive programme in Abuja.

He assured of the commission’s readiness to conduct free and fair polls. Okoye, however, warned that the general insecurity in the country and unguarded utterances by politicians posed serious threats to peaceful conduct of the 2023 polls.

  • I have received death threats as a result of the ongoing oil sector reform – NNPC boss

I have received death threats as a result of the ongoing oil sector reform – NNPC boss

The Group Managing Director (GMD), Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd), Mr Mele Kyari, said he has received death threats as a result of the ongoing reformation in the NNPC.

Kyari made the disclosure yesterday in Abuja, at the Legislative Transparency and Accountability summit organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption. He said as a result of the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), a lot of changes are ongoing which are affecting the old order. He said the company had taken down several illegal oil refineries affecting the volume of oil production in the country.

Nevertheless, Kyari said he was not bothered about the threats, as he would only die when God says his time is up. The NNPC boss, while noting that the scale of oil theft in the country is enormous, stated that the government was getting results with the private contractor engaged to tackle the challenges, in collaboration with security agencies.

“The issue of crude oil theft… the scale is enormous, we have seen pipelines taken from our main trunk lines to abandoned platforms. We have thousands of illegal refineries that we have taken down in the past 45 months.

“We have seen over 295 illegal connections to our pipelines. Many of them have been there for years. That you have a situation where your production came down to 1.1 million barrels, from 1.8, the reason is that not all of them are stolen.

Let me clear that misconception that the balance is stolen.

“Companies will stop injecting oil into the pipelines the moment they discover it can’t get to the terminal. Therefore, at the peak of production, you lose over 200,000 barrels per day. But once companies discover this production won’t get to the terminal, they will terminate it. So, we are losing up to 700,000 barrels of opportunity.

“In terms of stealing, we have been able to restore two of our trunk lines after the discoveries we have made. We were left with no choice than to involve private security contractors and it works, they are complementing our government security agencies and they have done great work. The navy, army etc, everyone has made contributions.

“Lastly, this industry is in short supply, I have received several death threats. This is the cost of change; when people walk away from things they are used to, to something that’s new, something that will take away value and benefit from them, they will react,” he stated.

Executive Secretary, Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Orji Ogbonaya Orji, has said the country earned a total of $741.74 million from oil and gas and N624 billion from the solid mineral sector between 1999 to 2020.

The NEITI boss noted that from the point of payment and point of receipt, a lot of the revenue disappeared, adding that it is the responsibility of his agency to trace the fund, especially if they are supposed to accrue to the federal government.

He said: “From the work we have done over the years, it was clear to us that between the point of payment and the point of receipt, a lot of revenue in foreign currency develops wings and fly away. and NEITI has the responsibility of tracing where they are, especially if they are monies that ought to accrue to the Federal Government.

“From our records, between 1999 and 2020, Nigeria has earned $741.74 billion from oil and gas alone. From the solid mineral sector, we have already counted in naira, N624 billion has been earned. A forum like this should be strengthened with data, and that is where NEITI will continue to insist that we work with the National Assembly. The National Assembly needs information on what is paid, what is received and what the money is used for, and NEITI has that data.

“The challenge we have at the moment is that data is not being properly used. When we finish our report and send it to the National Assembly, we plead, and we are still pleading that we expect our report to be laid at plenary to be debated. So that in a forum like this, we will be speaking from data, from a point of knowledge.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said over six decades, the oil and gas industry has played a critical role in the economy of Nigeria. He said the industry has provided millions of jobs, directly and indirectly, adding that income from the oil and gas sector has funded the administration of government to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars over the years. He, however, said the world is changing towards a future where the economic value of oil and gas is far diminished from what it used to be.

Earlier, Chairman, House Committee on Anti-Corruption, Shehu Garba, said the oil and gas sector accounts for 80 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign exchange income. He said it also accounts for 50 per cent of the nation’s total revenue, adding that anything that affects the sector, affects the country.

This is as the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has said it would carry out remedial works on the two federal roads in the interim, while awaiting the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

The government said the federal interstate highways were awarded to RCC and ARAB contractors for total reconstruction, stating that works have not progressed on the roads as expected.

EFCC appeals court judgment committing Bawa to prison

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, said the commission has appealed the contempt of court rulings against him by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

“Well, we have appealed against it, so we allow the natural course of law to take its effect,” he told journalists on the sidelines of budget defence at the House of Representives, yesterday

The court had ordered that Bawa committed to Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja for contempt of court.

Meanwhile, Bawa said the commission has appealed to the National Assembly for more funding to enhance its operations.

He made the appeal when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance Crimes for the defence of the agency’s 2023 budget proposals.

The EFCC boss said the commission needs more for funds for the completion of its academy amongst other capital projects.

Bawa noted that in line with extant rules, the EFCC have opened an account for confiscated and forfeited properties.

“We have opened that, and of course, we are remitting all that belongs to the Federal Government into that account. Of course, other victims of crimes are being paid based on the recoveries that were made on their behalf.

“Yes of course, that is it. We are building a brand new EFCC Academy and we need funding for that. Last year N3 billion was allocated and this year nothing was allocated for it, and that is why we are pleading to members that we need to have this new EFCC Academy because of course we have to learn, as fighters of crime we have to be ahead of these criminals and the only way you can do that is by training and re-training and re-training and re-training again. It can never end.

“Of course we have a very purposeful 9th National Assembly that we have a very good working relationship with them. I believe that, they are going to heed to our request.”

BREAKING NEWS: Explosion rocks Onitsha Market

Four people were burnt to death on Tuesday while 12 others were seriously injured following an explosion at the Chemical Market in Onitsha Head Bridge, Anambra State.

According to a witness, corpses of the dead persons were pulled out of the market, while injured persons were rescued.

Goods worth millions of naira were also destroyed by the fire and several shops were razed.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 12:10pm on Tuesday as the chemicals stored in the shops were exploding one after another.

The men of the Anambra and Delta states fire services are currently on the ground to put off the fire.

Spokesman of the Anambra State police command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said there was no casualty in the incident but a witness contradicted him.

According to the eye witness, the Chairman of Onitsha South local government area, Mr Emeka Orji, on getting wind of the incident rushed to the scene.

One of the traders, Mr Nweke Uchenna, told Daily Trust, “We were at our shops as usual when we heard a loud noise like a bomb blast and we saw thick smoke from some shops upstairs and everyone started running for safety. Then people started shouting for help and we saw people carrying bodies from those shops that were on fire; some were alive but burnt badly; while some seem to have been suffocated by the smoke and the stampede.

“We don’t know how much that have been lost to the fire but it can be estimated at N850 million to about N1 billion because the goods are strong chemical products that are highly inflamable,” he said.

Abuja High Court convicts EFCC Chairman, Bawa, for contempt

An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama has convicted the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, for contempt of court.

The EFCC chairman was convicted on Tuesday in relation to the anti-graft agency’s failure to comply with an earlier order of the court.

The court had ordered the EFCC to return to a defendant, a former Director of Operations at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Rufus Adeniyi Ojuawo, his Range Rover, and N40 million.

The EFCC had arraigned Ojuawo on a two-count charge before Justice Muawiyah Baba Idris of the High Court of the FCT in Nyanya in 2016.

He was accused of receiving N40 million and a Range Rover Sport (Supercharged) from one Hima Aboubakar of Societe D’Equipment Internationaux Nigeria Limited.

Ojuawo, in a suit filed by his lawyer, R.N. Ojabo, complained that the EFCC declined to comply with the order for the release of his seized property made by the court in a judgment delivered on November 21, 2018.

However, the presiding judge, Justice Chizoba Orji, in a ruling on Tuesday held that “the Chairman Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is in contempt of the orders of this honourable court made on November 21st 2018 directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abuja to return to the applicant his Range Rover (Supercharge) and the sum of N40, 000,000.00 (Forty Million Naira).

“The Inspector General of Police shall ensure that the order of this honourable court is executed forthwith,” Justice Orji said.
