  • [DEVELOPING STORY] 10th NASS: President Tinubu, APC, S/West Senators allegedly drop support for Akpabio

[DEVELOPING STORY] 10th NASS: President Tinubu, APC, S/West Senators allegedly drop support for Akpabio

…As Ndume counters claim, says it’s not

Strong indications, yesterday, suggested that the candidacy of former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, may have hit a brick wall as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to have withdrawn his support for him in the contest for the Senate President in the 10th National Assembly.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress, APC, had announced the endorsement of Senator Godswill Akpabio and three others for the topmost positions in the National Assembly.

Senator Akpabio from South-South was endorsed for Senate president, Senator Jubrin Barau from North-West for Deputy Senate President, Tajudeen Abass, North-West for speaker, House of Representatives and Kanu, South-East, for deputy speaker.

This did not, however, go down well with some members of the party, especially those aspiring for the position of presiding offices in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, following the protests and condemnation that trailed the party’s endorsements.

It was gathered yesterday that senators, mainly from the South West, have called for a meeting for tomorrow, where they would take a decision to work towards reviewing their position on choice of leadership of the Senate.

According to a senator from one of the states in the South West, the meeting is for senators from the zone to know the outcome of a crucial meeting of the leading tendency among the senators-elect scheduled for Thursday which they have strategically asked some of their members to attend.

President Bola Tinubu is said to have heeded the advice of his trusted political allies by tacitly withdrawing his support for the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The President, sources said, was resolute in running a corruption-free government, with emphasis on strengthening all the existing policies and institutions concerned with anti-corruption towards achieving this goal.

In his inaugural speech, Tinubu declared pointedly that his government would take” proactive steps such as championing a credit culture to discourage corruption, while strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of the various anti-corruption agencies.”

With this statement, the source said ”most of us have come to the full realization of the fact that President Bola Tinubu would not for anything support any senator with myriads of cases of corruption in the anti-graft agencies after declaring before the world that he would strengthen and make them more effective.”

A senator from one of the state in the S-West confided in Vanguard: “We have seen the follies in remaining in this camp, it will not work. We have fixed a meeting for Thursday where we are going to chart our next line of action.”

However, the Director General for the Akpabio/Barau Stability Group, Senator Ali Ndume, APC, Borno South, said in his reaction to the development yesterday: “It is not surprising that whenever a politically exposed person is contesting elections, some people would be sponsored to raise issues against him or her.

“Don’t forget that President Bola Tinubu was also severally accused when he was campaigning to be president.”

“We are not actually bothered about what the sponsored groups are saying about Akpabio, the anti-graft agencies know what to do. Why are they teaching them what to do?

“They are alleging that some corrupt activities took place under his watch at the NDDC but they did not say he misappropriated funds as governor or as minister.

“Akpabio was not the accounting officer of the NDDC, he only supervised the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

“They also accused him of not constituting the board of the NDDC but that also was not his job. The president of the country is saddled with such responsibility.”

  • Following subsidy removal, food prices, transport fares skyrocket

Following subsidy removal, food prices, transport fares skyrocket

    …FG, labour meeting deadlocked

The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC Ltd, Garba Deen Muhammad, said the price adjustment was in line with “market realities”, noting that the firm had directed its outlets nationwide to sell fuel between N480 and N570 per litre.

“NNPC Limited wishes to inform our esteemed customers that we have adjusted our pump prices of PMS across our retail outlets, in line with current market realities.

“As we strive to provide you with the quality service for which we are known, it is pertinent to note that prices will continue to fluctuate to reflect market dynamics,” he had said in a statement.

According to a widely circulated list, a new table of retail prices had been adopted for different geopolitical zones of the country.

Retail managers of NNPCL outlets were instructed to implement the review from May 31 despite the claim of the provisions of N3.36trn to cover fuel subsidy payment for the first six months of 2023 by the previous administration.

According to the new price schedule, petrol will sell for N557 per litre in Maiduguri, Borno State, and Damaturu, Yobe, while it will sell for N550 per litre in the other states of the North East.

Birnin Kebbi will buy petrol at N545 to lead prices in the North West. The average price in the North Central zone will be N537 per litre, except in Ilorin, where it will sell for N515 per litre. Consumers in the South East will buy at an average of N520 per litre.

Apart from Uyo, Akwa Ibom and Yenagoa, Bayelsa where petrol will now sell for N515 per litre, the rest of the South South will get the product at N511 per litre.

A litre will sell for N500 in the South West, except in Lagos State for N488.

Petrol stations, including those of the NNPCL, across the country, have already adjusted their pump prices accordingly.

Nigerians groan as queues, hike in prices hit states

Transport fares in Abuja, Lagos and other cities increased yesterday amidst the current fuel crisis, which has led to long queues at most petrol stations.

A trip from Lugbe to Secretariat and Area 10 in Abuja that hitherto cost N200 increased to N400 while Nyanya/Mararaba to Berger is now N400 from N250/N300.

From Bwari to Berger and Area 1 is now N1,000/N1,200 from N500, while from Kubwa to Berger now cost N800/N1,000 from N300.

An official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at one of the major parks in Nyanya said the transport fare from the park to Kaduna and Kogi is now N4,000 from N3,500.

Commuters in Lagos were seen trekking long distances as a result of hike in cost of transportation coupled with traffic congestion which has been made worse by queues at most filling stations in the state.

Oshodi to Mile 2 which was previously N400 is now N800; Agbara to Mile 2 is now N1,000 from N500 while commuters from Iyana-Iba to Iyana-Ipaja are expected to pay N800 from the initial price of N300. A trip from Costain to Ikeja which was N400 is now N800 while Costain to Apapa which used to be N200 is now N400.

In Oyo state, transporters increased their fares too. A trip from Ojoo to Total Garden has risen to N500 from N200; that of Ibadan to Lagos, which hitherto was between N800 and N1,200, was hiked to between N2,000 and N3,500 across various parks in the state.

Daily Trust also observed that the transport fare to Zaria from Kano which was N1,500 had been increased to N2,000; while from Zaria to Kaduna is now N3,500 from N2,000. A trip from Kano to Abuja had been hiked to N7,000 from N5,500.

In Kano, a dispatch rider at Kwari market, Suleiman Auwal said, “We’ve increased our services per trip from N500 to N1000 because we use fuel to convey goods to different clients”

In Ibadan, a bowl of garri, which sold for N350 as of Monday, now goes for N370 at the popular Bodija market. The same applies to yam flour price which has been increased from N300 to N350 per bowl

    FG, labour meeting deadlocked

The meeting between the organised labour and the federal government representatives at the State House, Abuja, on the petrol subsidy removal yesterday ended in a stalemate as no agreement was reached.

The organised labour was led by the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero and his counterpart for the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo.

The attendees included a former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole; Permanent Secretary, State House, Tijjani Umar; the Head of Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL, Mele Kyari; a director in the defunct Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Organization, Dele Alake, among others.

Ajaero and Osifo told reporters after the meeting that the labour’s position was that the status quo be maintained on petrol price while negotiations continued.

They said another meeting would be held after discussions with members of their executives on the outcomes of yesterday’s interaction with the government team.

Ajaero said, “As far as labour is concerned, we didn’t have a consensus in this meeting.”

He faulted the decision of the NNPCL to review the petrol pump price before the meeting, stating that the increase put the labour unions in a difficult position during negotiations.

“That’s the principle of negotiation. You don’t put the partner, ask them to negotiate under gunpoint.

“The prayers of the NLC is that we go back to status quo, negotiate, think of alternatives and all the effects and how to manage the effects this action is going to have on the people. If it’s an action that must take off.

“The subsidy provision has been made up to the end of June. And before then, conscious people, labour management, government should be able to think of what will happen at the end of June. You don’t start it before the time,” Ajaero said.

Alake said talks on solutions to all issues at hand would continue.

He said: “We’ve been deliberating on finding very amicable solutions to the issue at hand, to the queue and all of that and the increase in pump price.

“We had a very robust engagement. We cross-fertilized ideas, ideas flew from all sides and there is one thing that is remarkable even from the labour side, and that’s Nigeria. We’re all looking at the peace, progress and stability of Nigeria. That’s what is paramount.

“Of course, the NNPCL CEO is here, Mr Kyari, we cannot go into details now because the talks are still ongoing. We cannot finish everything at one setting, so, we’ve adjourned now, we’re continuing the talks at a later date very shortly.

“But the point is that the talks are ongoing and it’s always better for all sides to keep talking with a view to arriving at a very amicable resolution that’ll be in the longer term interest for all Nigerians. That’s as much as we can say now.”

An Economist, Dr Bongo Adi, who is a senior faculty member, Lagos Business School, said the petrol subsidy removal was the right way to go as it would ensure the industry aligns with the dictates of the market.

He however warned that the government should guide against a situation where marketers formed a cartel to determine prices.

In the letter, Senator Urhogide, who chairs the Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC), said his decision to resign from PDP with immediate effect was because of the inability of the PDP to reconcile the crisis in the party both in his Edo State and national level.

  • PEPT adjourns hearing Obi’s petition over illness of 2 of his key staff

PEPT adjourns hearing Obi’s petition over illness of 2 of his key staff

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has persuaded the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, sitting in Abuja, to adjourn further proceedings on the case he filed to challenge the outcome of the presidential election that held on February 25.

Obi, through his team of lawyers that were led by Prof. Awa Kalu, SAN, on Wednesday, told the court that two of his key staff members, suddenly fell ill.

He said the indisposition of the duo, who were described as part of the engine room of his legal Secretariat, affected  his plan to tender vital documents before the court to prove his allegation that the presidential election was rigged in favour of President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

“My lords, our plan for today’s proceedings was to start with the presentation of our documents, but unfortunately, we had some unexpected development.

“The unexpected development concerns the sudden illness of two of our key staff, for which reason I am constrained to ask for an adjournment till tomorrow.

“It is with the greatest humility and apology that we make this application.

“I assure my lords that we will be here tomorrow morning and we will proceed with vigour,” Prof. Kalu, SAN, pleaded.

Obi’s lawyer told the Justice Haruna Tsammani-led five-member panel that he had before the sitting commenced, informed President Tinubu’s lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, about the development.

In his response, President Tinubu’s lawyer, Chief Olanipekun, SAN, told the court that he was not opposed to the request for an adjournment.

Likewise, Mr. Abubakar Mahmood, SAN, who appeared for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as well as counsel for the APC, prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said they were equally not opposed to the request.

However, the respondents prayed the court to minus a day from the three weeks that was originally slated for Obi to present his case.

In a brief ruling, Justice Tsammani acceded to the application and adjourned the petition till Thursday.

It will be recalled that Obi and the LP had indicated their decision to call a total of 50 witnesses in the matter.

Specifically, Obi, who came third in the election, is in the joint petition he filed with the LP, contending that Tinubu was not the valid winner of the presidential election.

The petitioners, in the case marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023, equally maintained that President Tinubu was not qualified to participate in the presidential contest.

According to the petitioners, as at the time Tinubu’s running mate, Kashim Shettima, became the Vice Presidential candidate, he was still the nominated candidate of the APC for the Borno Central Senatorial election.

The petitioners further challenged Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the presidential election, alleging that he was previously indicted and fined the sum of $460,000.00 by the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, in Case No: 93C 4483, for an offence involving dishonesty and drug trafficking.

On the ground that the election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and non- compliance with the provision of Electoral Act, 2022, the petitioners argued that INEC acted in breach of its own Regulations and Guidelines.

The Petitioners argued that the electoral body was in the course of the conduct of the presidential poll, mandatorily required to prescribe and deploy technological devices for the accreditation, verification, continuation and authentication of voters and their particulars as contained in its Regulations.

They are, therefore, praying the court to among other things, declare that all the votes recorded for Tinubu and the APC, were wasted votes owing to his non-qualification/disqualification.

“That it be determined that on the basis of the remaining votes (after discountenancing the votes credited to the 2nd Respondent) the 1st Petitioner (Obi) scored a majority of the lawful votes cast at the election and had not less than 25% of the votes cast in at least 2/3 of the States of the Federation, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and satisfied the constitutional requirements to be declared the winner of the 25th February 2023 presidential election.

“That it be determined that the 2nd Respondent having failed to score one-quater of the votes cast at the presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, was not entitled to be declared and returned as the winner of the presidential election held on 25th February, 2023.

In the alternative, the petitioners want an order cancelling the election and compelling INEC to conduct a fresh election at which Tinubu, Shettima and the APC, listed as 2nd, 3rd and 4th Respondents, respectively, shall not participate.

They urged the court to declare that since Tinubu was not duly elected by a majority of the lawful votes cast in the election, therefore, his return as the winner of the presidential election, was unlawful, unconstitutional and of no effect whatsoever.

In a further alternative prayer, the petitioners want the court to hold that the presidential election was void on the ground that it was not conducted substantially in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, and the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Likewise, an order, “cancelling the presidential election conducted on 25th February 2023 and mandating the 1st Respondent to conduct a fresh election for the President, the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Both Obi and his Vice Presidential candidate, Baba Ahmed Datti, were in court on Wednesday to observe the proceeding.

Meanwhile, the court will by 2pm, continue further hearing on the petition that was filed by  candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who came second in the presidential election.

  • NNPC Reportedly Sells PMS At N537/Litre In Abuja

NNPC Reportedly Sells PMS At N537/Litre In Abuja

…N488 in Lagos, N511 in Port Harcourt

Nigeria may have finally removed subsidy on premium motor spirit (PMS) popularly known as Petrol as the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited Wednesday morning officially changed its pump price to N537 per litre in Abuja.

LEADERSHIP checks also showed similar trend in Lagos State where NNPCL now retail fuel at N488 per litre at its station on

Old Ota Road, Abule-Egba, Lagos while the NNPC Mega Station, Lagos Bus Stop, at Port Harcourt on Wednesday sells for N511 per litre.

In Plateau State, Pump price is now #537/ litre at NNPC stations.

This change by the national oil company is providing clarity around prices after the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy which cost almost $10 billion annually.

NNPC is the sole supplier of petrol in Nigeria today and it is now expected that other marketers will take a queue from the NNPC prices and adjust their own pump price this morning.

Analysts say since NNPC has effected different pump prices for different cities, this may mean that not only has subsidy gone but also that the wasteful price equalization mechanism which ensured petrol had the same official price all over Nigeria was also gone.

It is unclear what FX exchange rate NNPC has used to arrive at its pump price but it could be around N600/$.

President Bola Tinubu who resumed at Aso Rock on Tuesday afternoon held a long meeting with the CGEO of NNPC and CBN governor Godwin Emefiele on the vexed matters of fuel subsidy and the multiple foreign exchange rates.

This was after Tinubu had announced in his inauguration speech that subsidy was gone and that the CBN had been mandated to abrogate the multiple exchange rates regime.

  • Erdogan wins Turkish election, extending rule to third decade

Erdogan wins Turkish election, extending rule to third decade

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Turkey’s presidential election, defeating opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Sunday’s runoff vote and stretching his rule into a third decade.

With 99.43% of the votes counted, preliminary official results announced by Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) on Sunday showed Erdogan winning with 52.14% of the votes. Kilicdaroglu received 47.86%.

Speaking to thousands of his supporters outside the presidential complex in Ankara, Erdogan said that now was the time to “put aside all the debates and conflicts regarding the election period and unite around our national goals and dreams.”

“We are not the only winners, the winner is Turkey. The winner is all parts of our society, our democracy is the winner,” Erdogan said.

Erdogan said among the government’s main priorities would be fighting inflation and healing the wounds from a catastrophic earthquake on February 6 which claimed more than 50,000 lives in Turkey and neighboring Syria.

Speaking at his party headquarters in the capital Ankara, Kilicdaroglu said he would continue to fight until there is “real democracy” in Turkey.

“This was the most unfair election period in our history… We did not bow down to the climate of fear,” he said. “In this election, the will of the people to change an authoritarian government became clear despite all the pressures.”

Kilicdaroglu said what “truly makes me sad is the hard days ahead for our country.”

Foreign leaders including those of Russia, Qatar, Libya, Algeria, Hungary, Iran and the Palestinian Authority were among the first to congratulate Erdogan.

In remarks published on the Kremlin’s website, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the election provided “clear evidence of the Turkish people’s support” for Erdogan’s efforts “to strengthen state sovereignty and pursue an independent foreign policy.”

US President Joe Biden also congratulated Erdogan, tweeting that he looked forward to working together “as NATO allies” on “bilateral issues and shared global challenges.”

Erdogan’s supporters gathered In Istanbul’s Taksim Square, chanting his name and “God is great.”

Hundreds gathered outside the Istanbul headquarters of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party after preliminary results showed Erdogan in the lead. Some came with children while others waved flags, honked car horns and set off flares and fireworks.

Speaking outside party headquarters amid the celebrations, Erdogan supporter Denel Anart said: “I hope he lives forever.”

“He is my father, grandfather, uncle. He is my everything,” Anart said.

Sehat Pak said Muslims should rejoice following Erdogan’s victory.

Others struck a more religious note.

“Muslims should rejoice. The whole world will know Muslims more,” said Sehat Pak, 33. “The Islamic world should rejoice.”

But Mehmet Karli, adviser to Kilicdaroglu, called Erdogan’s election win a “pyrrhic victory” accusing the president of fueling tensions during the election.

“It does appear that President Erdogan has won these elections. But it would be a mistake to call this a victory. Perhaps a pyrrhic victory is a better term to describe this situation,” Karli said.

Erdogan’s victory over Kilicdaroglu, a 74-year-old bureaucrat and leader of the left-leaning CHP, leaves Turkey a deeply divided nation.

“This is not a crushing defeat for those who wanted change,” Asli Aydintasbas, a visiting fellow at Brookings Institution, told CNN’s Becky Anderson. “We are once again looking at a divided country … both camps want entirely different things for Turkey.”

In the first round of voting on May 14, Erdogan secured a nearly five-point lead over Kilicdaroglu but fell short of the 50% threshold needed to win.

The president’s parliamentary bloc won a majority of seats in the parliamentary race on the same day.

Electoral authorities said earlier that voting was passing “without any issues.”

Last week, third-place candidate Sinan Ogan, who won 5% of the first-round vote, publicly endorsed Erdogan, further boosting the strongman leader’s chances of winning Sunday’s second and final presidential round.

Many polls had incorrectly predicted that Kilicdaroglu would lead in the May 14 vote, which saw a high turnout of nearly 90% across the country.

Six opposition groups had formed an unprecedented unified bloc behind Kilicdaroglu to try to wrest power from Erdogan.

The opposition had described the election as a last stand for Turkish democracy, accusing Erdogan of hollowing out the country’s democratic institutions during his 20-year rule, eroding the power of the judiciary and repressing dissent.

Erdogan also faces headwinds from a floundering economy and a shambolic initial response to the February earthquake.

The government acknowledged its “mistakes” in its rescue operation and apologized to the public.

Erdogan’s critics also spotlighted loose construction standards presided over by the ruling AK party, which turbocharged a construction boom since the early 2000s, and exacerbated the death toll. They also argued that the earthquake response underscored Erdogan’s alleged hollowing out of government entities in his bid to consolidate power.

The country’s financial crisis – which saw the currency plummet and prices soar – is also partially blamed on Erdogan’s policies. The president suppressed interest rates leaving inflation unfettered, critics argued.

Erdogan won the first round but fell short of the margin needed to avoid a runoff.

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson last week, Erdogan vowed to double down on his unorthodox economic policies, arguing that interest rates and inflation were “positively correlated.”

He also hailed his relationship with Russia’s President Putin as “special” and said he would continue to block Sweden’s access to NATO, despite Western criticism that he was obstructing a unified front against Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Erdogan, who controls the second-largest army in NATO, accused Sweden of harboring Kurdish terror groups and has preconditioned Stockholm’s accession on the extradition of wanted individuals. Sweden has refused Turkey’s repeated requests to extradite individuals Ankara describes as terrorists, arguing that the issue can only be decided by Swedish courts.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson congratulated Erdogan for his victory. “Our common security is a future priority,” he tweeted.

Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Turkish strongman has emerged as a key power broker, adopting a crucial balancing act between the two sides, widely known as “pro-Ukrainian neutrality.”

He helped broker a key agreement known as the Black Sea Grain Corridor Initiative that unlocked millions of tons of wheat caught up in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, averting a global hunger crisis. The agreement was extended for another two months last Wednesday, one day before it was set to expire.

In a statement on Twitter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Erdogan for his victory.

“We count on the further strengthening of the strategic partnership for the benefit of our countries, as well as the strengthening of cooperation for the security and stability of Europe,” Zelensky said.

I Won’t Step Down From Race To Become Senate President – Orji Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is insisting that he will not step down for anyone in the race for the office of the senate president.

Kalu had made his intention clear about becoming the leader of the Senate a few months ago.

“It is my turn to become the Senate President. If I’m elected Senate President, I will be Team Nigeria. I’m going to work in every corner of Nigeria,” the ex-Abia governor said,” Kalu had said

“I schooled in Maiduguri, Borno State. I started my business in Lagos and spread it across all state capitals. My first name will be Team Nigeria, and my last name will be Team Nigeria.

“I’m hoping that Nigerians will pray for me to become Senate President because it’s my turn.”

However, The National Working Committee of the All Progressive Party had shown their preference for Senators Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau for the office of the Senate President and Deputy respectively.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Senator Kalu says talks are at an advanced stage between himself and former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, to contest the 10th Senate Presidency on a joint ticket and the outcome of their meetings would be unveiled soon.

Senator Kalu’s position is contrary to the stand of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC which has zoned the seat of the Senate Presidency to the South-South and chose Senator Godswill Akpabio to lead the 10th Senate.
