Enugu Police Bust Interstate Armed Robbery, Fraud Syndicate; Recover Incriminating Exhibits

The Enugu State Police Command has successfully dismantled an interstate criminal syndicate specialised in armed robbery and financial fraud. This was achieved through coordinated operations involving the Emene Division, Crack, and Octopus Tactical Squads, alongside the Neighbourhood Watch Group, which led to the arrest of eight (8) male suspects and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, cash, and other stolen items.

The arrested suspects include Ismaila Isah (aged 23), Sadik Ahmed (a dismissed soldier, aged 28), Abbas Usman (aged 33), Mubarak Garba (aged 24), Abubakar Haruna (aged 23), Abubakar Sani (aged 32), Obiri Chukwuebuka (aged 22), and Bright Omeniru (aged 22). Two locally made pistols loaded with a live and expended cartridge and a cash sum of three hundred thousand, four hundred and fifty Naira (₦300,450.00) were recovered. Further recovered are ten laptops, land documents, ten mobile phones, assorted jewellery and watches, one MP3 player, one headphone, four power banks, two SIM cards, footwear, and bags.

The operation commenced on November 12, 2024, around 3:30 a.m., when operatives from the Emene Division, supported by Neighbourhood Watch members, responded to a distress call regarding an armed robbery at an estate in Emene. During the operation, Ismaila Isah was apprehended with one locally made pistol, the said ₦300,450.00, and some stolen items, while others escaped.

Ismaila was later transferred to the Crack Tactical Squad for further investigation. His confessional statements and subsequent discreet investigations led to the arrest of Sadik Ahmed, Abbas Usman, Mubarak Garba, Abubakar Haruna, and Abubakar Sani at their hideouts in New Garriki, Awkunanaw, Enugu. Another locally made pistol and additional stolen items were recovered.

Furthermore, operatives from the Octopus Tactical Squad utilised an intelligence report and arrested Obiri Chukwuebuka and Bright Omeniru in Owerri, Imo State. During interrogation, they admitted to using phones stolen by the syndicate to fraudulently withdraw funds from victims bank accounts. Two SIM cards from different networks were also recovered.

Investigations reveal that the suspects confessed to committing multiple armed robberies within the Enugu metropolis and using the victims’ mobile phones’ SIM cards to also commit acts of fraud. They further confessed to moving and selling the stolen proceeds in Imo and other States. Sadik Ahmed, the dismissed soldier, admitted to exploiting his background as a former security agent to bypass checkpoints during the interstate shipment of the stolen items.

The suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), has commended the operatives for the operational breakthroughs. He urges them to sustain the momentum against criminal activities, especially during the festive season.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has assured investors as well as members of the public of the administration’s business-friendly land administration, highlighting the importance of the anti-land-grabbing law, also known as the Enugu State Property Protection Law, in promoting transparency and accountability in the state’s land management system.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony of the 26th National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Tpl. Dr. Chime Ogbonna, in Enugu at the weekend, Governor Mbah highlighted the key benefits of the law, which aims to prevent land grabbing and promote sustainable urban development in the state.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Barr Chimaobi Okorie, also commended the NITP for its efforts in promoting best practices in town planning and urban development in Nigeria.

While congratulating the new national president of NITP, Governor Mbah further highlighted some of the critical reforms embarked by the administration in order to create an eco-friendly land administration system for investors and members of the public who are desirous of investing in the state.

The reforms which aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and sustainability in land management and urban development saw the signing into law, the Enugu State Geographic Information System Law, the New Enugu City Development Law, the Enugu State Ranch Management Law and the Enugu State Property Protection Law, stressing that they were already winning investors’ confidence in the state.

He called on investors, both home and in diaspora to see Enugu as the right destination to invest with guaranteed high returns-on-investment, saying the administration was committed to addressing identified challenges facing investment in the country.

“We are working day and night to make our state the most eco-friendly state in terms of investment opportunities. We have derisked investment flow through our flexible land administration policies. We have invested optimally in our security architecture and we have started reaping the fruits. Today, Enugu State is the most secure and peaceful state in the country. It’s a deliberate effort undertaken by our administration because we intend to make Enugu the premier destination for investment and business,” he added.

The event, which was attended by dignitaries from the building sector, political class, government officials, business moguls, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, marked a significant milestone in the development of the state’s urban planning and development sector.

  • Dele Farotimi Slammed with New 12-Count Charge over Alleged Defamation

Dele Farotimi Slammed with New 12-Count Charge over Alleged Defamation

Detained rights activist, Mr. Dele Farotimi, has been slammed with a fresh 12-count charge bordering on alleged false information to cause a breakdown of law and order.

This comes as lawyers to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Afe Babalola, urged Farotimi to prove his allegations against a legal luminary.

The charge filed at the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, by the Inspector General of Police was brought under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.

Farotimi is currently on remand at a Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti on the orders of an Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court, pending the ruling in his bail application on December 10.

The Magistrate Court had on Wednesday ordered the remand of the rights activist, shortly after he was arraigned by the police on a 16-count charge bordering on criminal defamation.

He however pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charges.

In the fresh charge dated and filed December 6, Farotimi was alleged to have violated the Cybercrimes laws, when he on August 28, 2024 knowingly and intentionally transmitted a false communication in an online interview on Mic On Podcast by Seun Okinbaloye on his YouTube Channel in respect of a book he authored and published with the titled: ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’.

According to the charge, Farotimi was alleged to have in the said broadcast interview claimed that, “Aare Afe Babalola corrupted the judiciary”, a claim which he knew to be false information and made for the purpose of causing breakdown of law and order thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) (b) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.

In count two, the defendant was said to have made the allegation “with the intention of bullying and harassing the named persons thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24 (a) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.”

In another charge, Farotimi was alleged to have on December 2, 2024, acknowledged that there was a charge preferred before a court in Ekiti State against him at the instance of Chief Afe Babalola.

“This preferred, hidden from view and the court had purportedly demanded my presence multiple times and failed to appear before the court and this Court had then proceeded to issue bench warrant for my arrest. This is classic Afe Babalola, I detailed his corruptive influence in my book titled: ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ which you know to contain false information for the purpose of causing breakdown of law and order thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) (b) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended,” the charge read in part.

In count four, Farotimi was said to have described the charge in his online broadcast as “fraudulently preferred, hidden from view and the court had purportedly demanded my presence multiple times and I failed to appear before the court and this court had then proceeded to issue bench warrant for my arrest.”

The police further accused the defendant of bullying and harassing Babalola and other named persons when through his online broadcast alleged that after he sued Babalola for libel, “the machines of corruption went into overdrive and a case that should never have been killed at the preliminary stage was killed”.

Count 10 reads: That you Dele Farotimi on December 2, 2024 intentionally sent a message in the course of a press conference held on Online on your YouTube Channel, where you stated that: “I told the truth of his corruption of the society” which you know to contain false information for the purpose of causing breakdown of law and order thereby committed an offence Contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) (b) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.

Count 11: That you Dele Farotimi on December 2, 2024 intentionally sent a message in the course of a press conference held on Online on your YouTube Channel where you stated that: “I told the truth of his corruption of the society” with the -intention of bullying and harassing the named persons thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24 (a) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.

Count 12: That you Dele Farotimi on December 2, 2024 intentionally sent a message in the course of a press conference held on Online on your Youtube Channel, in reference to a book authored and published by you titled: “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System” where you stated in the Press Conference that:

“Aare Afe Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure 3 fraudulent judgement in the service of his clients” which you know to contain false information for the purpose of causing breakdown of law and order thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) (b)’ of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 as amended.”

Meanwhile, Babalola’s lawyers – Owoseni Ajayi, Olakanmi Falade and Lawrence Fasanmi, while addressing the media in Ado-Ekiti, stressed that charging the activist to court by the law enforcement agency was for the law to take its due cause on the matter.

Ajayi, said that the press conference was to correct the misleading publications about the ongoing matter between the Nigerian Police and Farotimi over defaming Babalola.

“Is it wrong for Aare Afe Babalola to seek justice for these false utterances against him? Should justice only be available to Mr Dele Farotimi because Aare Afe Babalola is a global icon?

“Once Mr Dele Farotimi can show proof that his assertions in the book are true, then he will be free. The law allows free speech, but not one that is calculated to injure the good reputation of another,” he added.

“The book being distributed and accessed in Ekiti, so long as defamation is a crime in Ekiti, this has established criminal liability within Ekiti, placing it under the investigatory jurisdiction of the police and the jurisdiction of the Ekiti State High Court, given the cross-state nature of the alleged crime.

“For the uninformed saying the court denied him bail, there was nothing like that. There is nothing special in the case of Dele Farotimi in that the court cannot ask his lawyers to make their bail application formal.

“Those pushing Farotimi are not his friends. By the time they lead him to the dungeon, he would realise they were deceiving him. Let me advise his family members to apologise to Aare. Aare Babalola is a builder, not interested in destroying Farotimi,” he added. Arise News

  • Atiku, Obi Frown at Farotimi’s Arrest

Atiku, Obi Frown at Farotimi’s Arrest

Leading political figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have condemned the arrest and detention of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, describing the move as a gross violation of democratic principles and an abuse of state power.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Mr. Obi called Mr. Farotimi’s arrest “a grave assault on democracy,” accusing the authorities of misusing police powers to stifle dissent.

“I condemn this action in totality. It represents not only an attempt to intimidate opposing voices but also a gross misuse of police powers,” the former Anambra governor said.

He demanded Mr Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release, urging law enforcement to prioritise allegiance to the constitution and the Nigerian people over narrow interests.

Similarly, Atiku, a former vice president, issued a scathing critique of the arrest, equating it to the oppressive practices of military regimes.

“The detention of Dele Farotimi serves as a grim reminder of the dark days of military dictatorship when the iron fist of tyranny sought to crush all dissent,” he said.

Atilku dismissed the defamation accusations against Mr. Farotimi as a civil matter that should not involve law enforcement.

“The Police’s intervention in such matters is an overreach of unimaginable proportions. Freedom of speech and association are constitutionally enshrined rights,” he asserted.

Mr. Farotimi was arrested following a petition filed by Tony Elumelu, chairman of UBA, accusing him of defamation. Before his detention, Mr Farotimi had disclosed that he voluntarily honoured a police invitation concerning the matter.

Both leaders decried what they described as an alarming trend of using state machinery to intimidate dissenting voices, warning that such actions undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

“It is imperative to remind the Tinubu administration that these repeated acts of arrest stand in direct contradiction to the principles of democracy,”Atiku said. Guardian

  • We Have Implemented New Minimum Wage – Gov. Nwifuru

We Have Implemented New Minimum Wage – Gov. Nwifuru

Ebonyi State Government says it has complied fully with the New Minimum Wage act .

The Governor was reacting to the strike embarked upon by some workers in the State .

According to Dr. Monday Uzor, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nwifuru who made this known while addressing Journalists in his office, wondered why some Labour leaders misinformed the workers to embark on strike even when Government has commenced full implementation of the New Minimum wage

He described the action as unnecessary and a deliberate attempt to embarrass the government.

“As a government we are to obey the law. We must respect the provisions of the constitution.

“And the law says the minimum wage must be 70,000.

“I have exceeded the nationally agreed #70,000 with additional #5000.

“I have not had issues with the Labour and before becoming the Governor, I knew some realities in the light of the economic uncertainties we are faced.

“This is the reason I added 20,000 wage allowances, and bought vehicles for the Labour.

“To assist the workforce, we provided CNG buses to convey the workers to their offices and back at no cost.

“The law passed by the National Assembly is Minimum Wage, not salary increments.

“Cognisant of the current situation, I increased the minimum wage to 75,000.

“I am surprised they are part of the strike.”

The Governor said apart from full implementation of the new minimum wage, his administration has been consistent in improving the welfare of workers.

“As I speak, we are not owing pension and gratuities.

“I am shocked that our state joined the strike”.

The Governor urged workers to return to work warning that only those available at their duty posts will receive salaries.

  • Organised Labour Confirm Payment of N80,000 Minimum Wage for November in Enugu

Organised Labour Confirm Payment of N80,000 Minimum Wage for November in Enugu

The Organised Labour in Enugu State has refuted the media reports that the new minimum wage was yet to be paid in the state, saying that the implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage, which is above the N70,000 national minimum wage, commenced in November 2024, according to a government issued statement.

The workers also said that they had no plan to go on strike since. They said that observed discrepancies in consequential adjustment in the implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage had already been conveyed to Governor Peter Mbah and nursed no doubts that it would be addressed subsequently, as he had already earned workers’ trust by his commitment to their welfare since his assumption of office.

This was made known in a joint statement in the state capital on Tuesday by the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Enugu State Council, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo; Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Ben Asogwa; and the Chairman of the state’s Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, JNC, Comrade Ezekiel Omeh.

The statement read, “The Orgaised Labour in Enugu State wishes to make clarifications in several media reports, which wrongly project Enugu among the states that are yet to pay the national minimum wage.

“We want to acknowledge the fact that the Enugu State Government paid the N80,000 minimum wage approved by the governor in the November 2024 salary.

“However, the minimum wage paid did not reflect the consequential adjustments inherent in minimum wage implementation.

“As labour leaders, we have already communicated to His Excellency the observed discrepancies and in his usual magnanimity to the welfare of workers, we strongly believe that he will address this subsequently.

“Our confidence in the governor remains intact, considering his usual dispositions to the wellbeing of workers.

“It is worthy of note that he continued to pay wage award of N25,000 he approved for workers from December 2023 till October 2024 when the new minimum wage of N80,000 was approved and consequently reflected in the November salary.

“We also recall his good faith in ensuring that local government employees were included from the onset in the new minimum wage of N80,000, having earlier upgraded them to full N30,000 minimum wage upon assumption of office after several years of waiting.

“Likewise, he approved the payment of the N1.9bn four-year accumulated leave allowances owed to teachers of public primary schools in the state and eight-month salary arrears valued at over N467m, which were also owed the academic, non-academic, and casual staff of the Enugu State College of Education Technical, ESCET, Enugu, before his assumption of office.

“Consequently, in the same culture, we trust him to address all the concerns regarding consequential adjustments in the implementation of N80,000 minimum wage.

“So, we have not gone on strike. We do not also contemplate or foresee any strike in the near future because there is no need for that yet.”

  • In Edo, Gov. Okpebholo Swears in Judges Previously Rejected by past administration

In Edo, Gov. Okpebholo Swears in Judges Previously Rejected by past administration

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges who were initially rejected by Godwin Obaseki’s administration.

Earlier in May, five judges were sworn in.

The governor, who oversaw the swearing-in ceremony of the three judges into the Edo State High Court at the Festival Hall in Government House, recalled that in his inaugural speech, he had promised to address the issue and today had the opportunity to correct the wrong.

He noted that eleven months after the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended the appointments, only five of those recommended were sworn in by the previous administration, leaving three out, despite all having been cleared and recommended by the NJC.

Governor Okpebholo emphasised that no one should be discriminated against, marginalised, or hated for personal reasons or for lacking a godfather.

He further added that as judges of the state High Court, they are expected to uphold a high standard of conduct, ensure fair dispute resolution, protect citizens’ rights, and bring culprits to justice.

He said: “During my swearing-in ceremony as Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024, I acknowledged the critical role of the judiciary under the doctrine of Separation of Powers. Today we are gathered here to strengthen that role for the Judiciary.

“The National Judicial Council in June 2023 had recommended eight persons for appointment as Judges of the Edo State High Court.

“Eleven months after that recommendation, only five of them were sworn-in by the immediate-past administration, leaving out three, even when they had all been cleared and recommended by the same NJC.

“In my inaugural speech, I made a promise to look into the case. Today we have the privilege to right the wrong. The three judges will now have the opportunity to sit with their colleagues at the bench of the Edo State High Court, to discharge their duties as beacons of hope.

“For me, no one should be discriminated, marginalised or hated for personal reasons, or on account of not having a godfather.

“As Judges of the State High Court, we expect you to uphold a high standard of conduct, ensure fair dispute resolution, uphold the rights of citizens, and bring culprits to justice.”

The three judges sworn in are Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe.

Responding on behalf of the trio, Ojo Maureen Osa thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve as judges in Edo State.

She expressed gratitude to the governor for making their swearing-in a reality just three weeks into his tenure and prayed for success in his administration and the advancement of justice for all.

“We assure you that we will dispense justice without fear or favour,” she stated. Newscentral

  • Enugu Govt, Austrian Firm Formalise $100m FDI to Boost Water Infrastructure

Enugu Govt, Austrian Firm Formalise $100m FDI to Boost Water Infrastructure

The Enugu State Government and WANDE NEXUS, an Austrian firm, have formalised an agreement to implement the Sustainable Last Mile Connectivity and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project in Enugu.

With the signing, which took place on Monday at Government House, Enugu, in the presence of the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Thomas Schlesinger, WANDE Nexus is to inject $100 million as Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, to modernise water infrastructure, improve service delivery, and ensure equitable access to clean water for all households in Enugu City.

Speaking, Governor Peter Mbah described the signing as an example of the relationship that could exist between a sub-sovereign and a sovereign, and a major step to getting water to the last mile in Enugu City.

“We now have an investment of $100 million to deal decisively with the last mile connection, the downstream part of our water system. This huge sum shows that the economic reforms of the Federal Government and our effort to position Enugu as the premier destination for investment are yielding results because this is a major FDI, not just for us as a state, but even as a country.

“For the record, this is not a case where we are just signing an agreement that is exploratory. This is an agreement we signed today for the funds to begin to flow. This is a discussion that started eight months ago. From signing an MoU, to Terms Sheet, to getting a Concession Agreement, today we are signing the final agreement and we expect that the investment funds will start to flow immediately, as they should have started with the connectivity to the last mile, and the procurement of the metres will commence,” he said.

The governor explained that while the administration had been able to increase water production from an occasional 2 million litres to 120 million litres, the biggest challenge was in expanding the network and connecting the tertiary pipelines to the various homes. He, however, noted that with the signing of the FDI agreement, the problem would become a thing of the past.

“This is purely an investment of $100m being injected in our downstream water sector and we have the responsibility, as a state government, to continue to manage the upstream sector. If you look at our budget for 2025, there is fund slated for water, and that is essentially to increasse our water production capacity. The volume will grow from 120 million litres of water per day to 200 million litres per day.

In his address, Ambassador Schlesinger said the investment had the strong backing of the Austrian Government, and commended Governor Mbah for building the necessary international relationships and showing a strong commitment to making life better for his people.

“I wish to laud His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah for his vision to transform the water management systems for Enugu City, with its ultimate goal to ensuring equitable access to clean water.

“Governor Mbah is a great friend of Austria. He has visited Vienna twice, where he met with ministers, international organisations and the business community; and he is a very active supporter of Austrian companies in Enugu.

“This investment in the amount of $100 million is, therefore, a testimony of his excellent work and his vision for Enugu State,” he said.

He equally expressed strong confidence in the capacity of the Chairman of WANDE Nexus Group, Dr. Ugochukwu Ugbor, to lead the transformation of the downstream water sector.

“In order to implement such a plan as the governor has, you need strong leadership at the top of the project, represented by Dr. Ugochukwu Ugbor, the Chairman of WANDE NEXUS. He spent more than 20 years in Austria, where he played key roles in international organisations, addressing critical infrastructure and sustainability challenges, as enshrined in another Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations,” he stated.

Earlier in his address, Dr. Ugbor said that he and the rest of Austrian investors were encouraged into the venture by the speedily improving ease of doing business, conducive investment environment, and trustworthiness exhibited by the Mbah administration, adding that the company would deliver on expectations, create 500 direct jobs for a start, build human capital in modern water management, and also directly improve health and economic opportunities in Enugu State.

  • Obi Speaks on Tax Reform, says Transparency National Impact, Regional Sustainability is Key

Obi Speaks on Tax Reform, says Transparency National Impact, Regional Sustainability is Key

Former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi, has called for a transparent and inclusive approach to tax reform in Nigeria.

In a post on X, Obi emphasised the need for robust public debate and deliberation on tax-related policies, stressing that such reforms should not be rushed.

“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate”.

Obi highlighted the importance of public hearings, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to contribute their perspectives.

“A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.”

According to him, inclusive policymaking is essential for building public trust and ensuring that reforms reflect the interests of all citizens.

He cautioned against focusing solely on increasing government revenue without considering the broader implications on the nation’s economy and the sustainability of its regions.
