A father has been found guilty of murdering his daughter after he stabbed her in the heart at their home in Darlington.

Simon Vickers, 50, was convicted of murder at Teesside Crown Court on Monday.

He gave different accounts of what happened in the seconds before he plunged a kitchen knife into his daughter Scarlett’s chest last July.

The 14-year-old died at the scene.

Prosecutors said the 11cm wound was too deep to have been caused accidentally, and the knife must have been “held firmly” at the time.

  • Explosion rocks mining site in Niger state

Explosion rocks mining site in Niger state

With barely one week after a fuel tanker explosion rocked Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, killing over 100 people and injuring 69 others, another explosion has rocked the state, this time at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.

The explosion reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday when miners had just resumed work at the site.

The blast was said to have sent shockwaves through Sabon Pegi and neighbouring villages, including New Bussa, the headquarters of Borgu Local Government Area, leaving people scrambling for safety.

A source close to the community, who confirmed the incident to Daily Sun over the phone, said although the cause of the explosion could not be immediately ascertained, poor handling of explosive devices used by the mining company in the area for their operations might have been responsible for the blast.

According to the source, four bodies have been recovered from the scene, but the number of casualties could be higher. “The explosion occurred when the miners were just resuming work in the morning.

“Everybody is afraid to go close to the area for now because nobody knows what will happen next, especially when we don’t know what must have triggered the explosion that shook the entire village, including New Bussa.

“People were just running into the bush because initially, they thought the explosion was from the hydroelectricity dam in the area, as it was very loud. It was later that we were told the explosion occurred at a mining site at Sabon Pegi in Mashegu Local Government Area, which shares a border with some villages in Borgu Local Government Area,” the source added.

He, however, ruled out any possible link to a terrorist attack, stressing: “No, the explosion occurred at a mining site. The mining company usually uses explosive devices for mining activities, so it must be poor handling of these devices that resulted in the explosion.

“Although there is a history of terrorist activities in the area, this incident has nothing to do with terrorists. There is serious mining activity going on in that particular village, and it has been ongoing for a long time,” he said.

Meanwhile, there is no statement yet from either the state government or the state police command on the latest incident at the time of filing this report. Sun

  • Timileyin Ajayi Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ To Salome Adaidu’s Murder Despite Earlier Confession

Timileyin Ajayi Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ To Salome Adaidu’s Murder Despite Earlier Confession

Timileyin Ajayi, the suspected killer of Salome Adaidu, has been arraigned at the High Court of Justice, Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

He was charged with one count of culpable homicide punishable by death, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria

He was arraigned on Monday before Justice Simon Aboki. Upon arraignment, the suspect pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

The 32-year-old was apprehended for the murder of his alleged girlfriend, Adaidu, a 24-year-old member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who served at Nicon Insurance in the Nation’s capital, Abuja, before her death.

Salome was murdered when she visited the suspect at his house in the Papalana axis at New Karshi in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The police had paraded Ajayi alongside the knife and machetes he used to commit the crime.

Timi was nabbed Sunday, January 12, 2025, while trying to dispose of the head of Salome after killing her and dismembering her body parts when she visited him at his house.

Answering questions in an exclusive interview from our Correspondent, when asked if he killed Salome, he answered “Yes”, narrating that it wasn’t planned but it is because they don’t have each other all the time.

“I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time, it’s not something I planned. It happened on that day and it happened. Not that I have the plan in mind, she was cheating. She hides most of the things from me most time. I got to know from her phone. I saw her chats with other guys on the phone, that was why I decided,” he said.

When probed further, he said he has no regrets in committing the crime.

He said, no. “I don’t have any regrets because life is reciprocal that is what I thought, if you must do something to someone, you have to be reciprocal with that person. You have to understand what that person is going through so that you can actually put yourself in the position that the person is going through, that is why I don’t have any regrets because we were actually compatible.”

  • Enugu Targets 792,000 Jobs in Renewable Energy, Approves Climate, Off-grid Electricity Policy

Enugu Targets 792,000 Jobs in Renewable Energy, Approves Climate, Off-grid Electricity Policy

In yet another pacesetting move, the Enugu State Government under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah has approved the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan, ESCPAP, making it the first subnational government in Nigeria to adopt a long-term climate strategy that incorporates emissions modeling, microenergy audits, and extensive stakeholder engagement.

In the same vein, the State Executive Council has also approved the Enugu State Off-Grid Electrification (OGE) Policy Strategy Plan to expand electricity access to unserved and underserved communities, leveraging distributed renewable energy solutions to drive economic growth and improve public service delivery.

The approvals were announced by the Secretary to State Government, SSG, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, at the end of the State Executive Council meeting at the weekend.

Briefing newsmen alongside the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu and the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Nathaniel Uramah, Prof. Onyia said ESCPAP underscored Mbah Administration’s commitment to balancing economic transformation, environmental sustainability, innovation, inclusiveness, and climate resilience, ensuring that key sectors such as agriculture, energy, and natural resources were climate-resilient and future-proofed against environmental challenges.

The ESCPAP, according to the government, represents a pioneering effort to facilitate clean energy development, stimulate job creation, and foster green technology advancements.

“We do recall that Enugu State had started this policy design in the past eight months, and finally, after the surveys and after crunching the numbers from various instruments we used, we have come up with a policy and action plan.

“This action plan will help us enhance economic growth. This is very important for us in job creation, and we are looking at a situation where we facilitate the creation of 792,000 jobs in renewable energy, waste management, and reforestation by 2060,” he said.

In terms of sustainable economic growth, ESCPAP is projected to drive a 25-fold increase in the state’s GDP by 2060 through investments in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green technology.

In terms of energy transition, the state, going by the policy, targets 80 per cent renewable energy usage by 2060, with a 60 per cent emissions reduction in the transport sector and a robust afforestation plan to enhance carbon sequestration.

The comprehensive policy and action plan includes the setting up of an ESCPAP Implementation Committee, comprising representatives from the government, private sector, civil society, and international donor organisations, to ensure effective execution of the policy’s goals as well as the introduction of a climate change curriculum in Enugu’s Smart Green Schools to equip the future generations with knowledge and skills in green innovation.

The Climate Policy and Action Plan, he said ,aligned with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and global climate agreements, thus positioning the state as a key player in the nation’s journey toward a low-carbon, sustainable future.

Also, highlighting the state’s Off-Grid Policy, Onyia said, “This policy is designed to complement the Enugu State Electrification Policy that was passed in 2023 Enugu Electricity Law.

“This provides a framework that would catalyse private sector investment, enhance socio-economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life of Enugu people.

“This policy also recognises the importance of distributed renewable energy solutions such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass. These will be the key drivers for electrification in the rural and peri-urban areas.”

All these, according to the government, were in sync with the Mbah Administration’s drive to grow Enugu’s economy to a $30 billion economy by 2031.

  • Many dead in fuel tanker accident in Enugu

Many dead in fuel tanker accident in Enugu

…Gov Mbah visits accident scene, expresses sadness, as government takes over treatment of injured victims

Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has expressed sadness over an accident involving a fuel tanker along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, claiming 11 lives.

The explosion, which was reported to have occurred around 11:30 am, caused widespread panic and affected another petrol tanker and six other vehicles.

It was not clear how the incident happened but witnesses told reported the explosion occurred when a fuel-laden tanker fell while navigating down the hilly busy expressway.

They described the blast as devastating, saying that the ensuing fire also gutted another truck behind it, leading to the escalation of the fire.

Rescue efforts were hindered by the intensity of the fire, making it difficult for bystanders to access the scene.

Victims reportedly burnt beyond recognition, and were believed to be occupants of the vehicles caught in the inferno. It was gathered that some of the victims were attempting to run away from the scene when they were caught by the fire.

Enugu State governor, who was at the scene of the accident for on-the-spot assessment, said the government had already swung into action to ensure that the victims received full medical attention, while also taking steps to forestall future occurrences, including enforcement of road rules and fixing the part of the federal road that was in disrepair.

Describing the accident as unfortunate, Mbah commiserated with the families of the victims.

He further directed the Federal Road Safety Commission’s Sector Commander, Enugu, Mr Franklin Agbakoba, and the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Obi Ozor, to ensure that all tankers conveying inflammable substances in the state have anti-spill lock that will prevent spill in case of accident.

“This is an accident involving a tanker that preliminary investigation show may have had a break failure, fell down, had its product, premium motor spirit spilled from the tank and ignited. So, this is for us a tragedy where we have some casualties.

“But as I said, investigation is still at preliminary stages. The police and other law enforcement agencies are on it. We want to get to the root of this for us to understand the true cause of the accident.

“In the meantime, we have moved those that are in need of treatment to the hospitals for full medical attention. My Commissioner for Health and also my Special Adviser on Health, the Chief Medical Director of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTTH), Parklane, Enugu, the police, and Federal Road Safety Corps are all involved. They have my instruction to ensure that maximum medical attentions were given to the survivors,” the governor stated.

Continuing, he stated, “But we’re also taking quick measures as a government. I have just been speaking the head of the Federal Road Safety Corps to make sure they enforce the rules that prohibit tanker drivers from the road without an anti-spill lock. Tankers conveying premium spirit and inflammable products must have an anti-spill lock to ensure that when these trucks for down, they do not spill. It is very important.

“Also, for us as a government, we are going to be looking at how we can deploy some traffic rules to ensure that we do not have a recurrence of this.

“We are obviously not going to wait for the federal government to fix the other section of the road. We as government are going to take steps to ensure that whatever needs to be done on that section of the federal road is done immediately so we would never want a reoccurrence of this.”

While briefing the governor on some of the preliminary investigation conducted by the FRSC Sector Commander for Enugu explained that the tanker spill was as a result of a brake failure by the fuel tanker.

He added that 11 people lost their lives at the scene, while identified injured road users were rushed to the hospital for treatment and thanked the governor for showing leadership by rushing to the scene and equally undertaking to foot the medical bills.

  • NLC kicks against 50% telecom tariff hike approved by NCC

NLC kicks against 50% telecom tariff hike approved by NCC

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Federal Government’s recent approval, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for a 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs.

NLC said the decision, coming at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.

According to a statement by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the labour centre said; “Telecommunication services are essential for daily communication, work, and access to information. Yet, an average Nigerian worker already spends approximately 10% of their wages on telecom charges. For a worker earning the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, this means an increase from ₦7,000 to a staggering ₦10,500 per month or 15% of his salary — a cost that is unsustainable.”

The statement went on to say; “This hike exemplifies the government’s apparent ease in prioritising corporate profits over citizens’ welfare. It is shocking that the government approved this 50% tariff increase for telecom companies within a month, yet took nearly a year to approve the recent minimum wage for workers, despite the rising cost of living and inflation eroding purchasing power. This glaring disparity underscores a troubling reality: the government appears more aligned with the interests of wealthy corporations than with the needs of the workers and citizens it is meant to serve.

“We must ask: When will the government stand for the people it swore to protect? When will the National Assembly rise to its responsibility and hold the executive accountable for policies that blatantly undermine the welfare of the majority? When will the common man heave a sigh of relief in Nigeria?”

The Congress added that it is not opposed to a tariff review but disagrees with the approved rate of increase.

“We therefore call on the government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to stop the implementation of this ill-advised hike to allow a reasonable conversation around it. If the dialogue agrees on the need for the hike, then, we can all seek a more humane increase and definitely not this 50% hike.

“We on all Nigerian workers and masses to reject this unjustifiable tariff hike. We urge citizens to prepare for collective action, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to compel the reversal of this punitive increase. This is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress remains resolute in defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses. We will not allow the people to bear the brunt of policies that further entrench poverty and inequality. Together, we will do our best to resist this injustice and demand that government prioritises the interests of its citizens over corporate interests.” Tribune

  • Reverse WHO Withdrawal Decision – AU Tells Trump

Reverse WHO Withdrawal Decision – AU Tells Trump

The African Union (AU) has expressed dismay at US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organisation (WHO), urging his administration to reconsider.

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday, just hours after taking office, directing the US to exit the UN agency, a move that threatens global health initiatives with funding shortfalls.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU Commission Chairman, said in a statement that he was “dismayed to learn of the US government’s announcement” and stressed the importance of WHO in ensuring global public health security.

Impact on Africa and Global Health

The withdrawal comes as Africa battles health crises, including recent outbreaks of mpox and Marburg viruses. Mahamat highlighted Washington’s early support for the Africa CDC, the AU’s health watchdog, which collaborates closely with WHO to combat pandemics.

“Now more than ever, the world depends on WHO to ensure global public health security as a shared common good,” he said, expressing hope that the US would reverse its decision.

    Criticism of Trump’s Move

Trump has previously criticised the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing it of bias and inefficiency. The US had initiated a withdrawal during Trump’s first term, a move later reversed by Joe Biden.

Experts warn of the implications of this decision. Former US health official Tom Frieden wrote that it “weakens America’s influence, increases the risk of a deadly pandemic, and makes all of us less safe.”

    Pandemic Treaty Without US

The decision also impacts ongoing negotiations among WHO member states to establish a treaty for managing future pandemics, which will now proceed without the US.

The move has sparked fears, particularly amid growing concerns over bird flu, which recently claimed its first human life in the United States. Newscentral

  • Consider Enugu as your next investment destination – Mbah woos diaspora community

Consider Enugu as your next investment destination – Mbah woos diaspora community

…as NiDCOM Chairman lauds governor’s investment in infrastructure, security

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has urged the Nigeria diaspora community to consider Enugu as their first choice of investment destination, stressing that his administration has created robust mechanisms to facilitate their investment process and ensure high return on investment.

This was even as the Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the governor for his committed investment in the state’s infrastructure and security, noting the huge investment potentials that would benefit diaspora investors.

Mbah made the call on Wednesday in Enugu while delivering his welcome address at a sensitization and advocacy workshop organized by NiDCOM in partnership with Enugu State Government for the promotion of diaspora investment potentials in the Southeast Nigeria.

He recalled the administration’s unwavering commitment to the diaspora community which has already positioned the state as a business-friendly environment through policies such as easy access to land, guaranteed return on investment, transparency and secure environment.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, acknowledged the pivotal role Nigerians in diaspora were playing in the nation’s development through their remittances, expertise, innovation and networks.

“With an estimated $20bn – $25bn sent home annually by Nigerians abroad as estimated by the World Bank, and active participation of this group, the Nigerian diaspora community cannot be ignored. As such, effectively harnessing the support and influence of our diaspora community is crucial for enhancing investment and trade, and securing robust representation in host countries to promote global interconnectedness,” the governor added.

Insisting that the government was open to partner with diaspora investors to explore the untapped potentials of diaspora participation in the southeast, Mbah charged Igbo investors in diaspora to imbibe the spirit of homecoming investment, calling on Nigerians living outside the eastern part of the country to seize the opportunity afforded them to invest in the Southeast zone.

“The Southeast is renowned for its entrepreneurial drive, industrious spirit, a rich history of migration, and a commitment to community development of Ala Igbo. The significant population of Ndigbo in the diaspora presents tremendous opportunities for fostering mutual growth and development across the five states of the Southeast. This workshop should serve as a powerful call to Ndigbo in the diaspora, urging them to look back home and invest not only financially but also socially, to drive the sustainable development of the region,” he further stressed.

While stating that the state government recognized the Igbo in diaspora as key stakeholders in the development agenda to move the state’s GDP from $4.4bn to $30bn, Mbah maintained that investment from diasporans would not only complement the administration’s efforts to fostering inclusive economic growth, but would also improve the quality of life of the citizens.

He added that some of the initiatives that might interest diasporans included the newly established Enugu State Electricity Market, the New Enugu Smart City, the Special Agro-Processing Zones, the recently completed ICT centre, the Enugu Transport Infrastructure Projects, among other projects which cut across agriculture, technology, education, transport, energy and mineral resources.

Speaking earlier, Mrs. Abike-Dabiri called on diaporans to tap into the unlimited resources and opportunities which Nigeria has to offer them through investment in diverse areas of the economy.

“There is no better place to invest than investing in one’s home. Majority of the respected diasporans are from Enugu State and they are doing great globally,” she noted.

While advocating for a diaspora fund to be set up to identify specific areas of investment, the NiDCOM Chairman stressed that every state in Southeast has something to offer to investors with potential high return on investment.

In her welcome remark, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora Matters, Mrs. Olangwa Ezekwu, said the governor had already created an enabling environment for businesses to thrive through the special ease of doing business model that encourages investment in the state.

“We are open and ready for investment opportunities and have identified various sectors in education, security, agriculture, tourism, health, mining, oil and gas, ICT, to name but a few. This has yielded partnerships in the various sectors.

“This is a call for action. I have invited you on this journey, and I appeal to you to be part of it. Do not give up your seat on the table as we all strive to move South Eastern States forward,” she concluded.

  • NCC Says 50% Telecom Tariff Increase Not Across Board

NCC Says 50% Telecom Tariff Increase Not Across Board

The Nigerian telecommunications industry is set for significant changes as operators implement the tariff adjustments approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The NCC approved a cap of 50 per cent increase in telecom tariffs, but clarified that this adjustment may not apply uniformly across all operators.

Subscribers are concerned about the potential impact on mobile and internet services as costs for calls, SMS, and data are expected to rise significantly.

Preliminary details indicate that the cost of calls may rise from N11 to N16.5 per minute, SMS charges from N4 to N6, and 1GB of data could increase to N431.25. Analysts estimate that these changes could boost the telecom sector’s annual revenue from calls alone to N6.7 trillion, based on 2023 data showing 205.3 billion minutes of outgoing calls.

However, the NCC said the exact rates will depend on individual competitive strategies. The NCC aims to balance affordability with service quality amid rising operational costs due to inflation and foreign exchange fluctuations

The NCC, the regulatory authority for the telecom sector, announced that it was awaiting detailed proposals from operators on how the adjustments will be applied. The revisions aim to address rising costs in the sector caused by inflation, foreign exchange fluctuations, and increasing operational expenses.

NCC’s director of public affairs, Reuben Mouka, in a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP, clarified that the tariff increases will vary across operators.

“Operators are capped at 50 per cent but the exact charges may differ based on their competitive strategies. Some may charge slightly higher or lower within the approved limits,” Mouka explained.

He added that operators must adhere to the NCC’s Guidance on the Simplification of Tariffs in the Nigerian Communications Sector, published in December 2024.

He, ttherefore, assured the public that NCC remains committed to balancing affordability with the need to sustain quality services.

“The adjustments are necessary to ensure the continued delivery of quality services while safeguarding the industry’s viability. We will review submissions from operators to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.

“The NCC has also assured the public that it will closely monitor the implementation of the adjustments to ensure transparency and prevent exploitation. Also, subscribers are encouraged to stay informed and report any issues promptly,” he stated.

Despite assurances, subscribers have voiced concerns about higher costs, particularly given the persistent network challenges.

“If operators must raise tariffs, they should ensure their networks are reliable,” said Comfort Dele, an online vendor.

President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), Adeolu Ogunbanjo, also criticised the 50 per cent tariff hike as excessive and a burden on consumers.

“A moderate increase of five per cent to 10 per cent would have been more reasonable,” he argued.

Ogunbanjo urged telecom companies to explore alternative funding options, such as Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) or issuing stocks.

He also pointed to unresolved debts among telecom operators and banks, suggesting that settling these liabilities could strengthen the industry’s financial position without drastically increasing tariffs.

Ogunbanjo disclosed plans to challenge the hike in court, saying, “Telecommunications are essential for education, business, and social interaction. This decision will have far-reaching consequences for millions of Nigerians.” Leadership.
