NUT declares indefinite strike in Ebonyi

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ebonyi State chapter, has declared an indefinite strike in seven of the 13 Local Government Areas of the state over unpaid salaries.

The seven local governments are Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo, and Ohaukwu.

The union said the affected local governments have failed to pay its members their salaries for months and urged the members to ensure strict compliance with the industrial action.

The Secretary of the State Union, Comrade Bassey Asuquo, disclosed this in a statement in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

“Sequel to our earlier notice on mobilisation for industrial strike action, we have thoroughly reviewed the compliance of local government chairmen regarding the clearance of our members’ salaries.

“As of the close of work today, February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that certain local government areas have cleared the salaries of our members.

“However, we regret to inform you that several local government chairmen have failed to clear the backlog of our members’ salaries.

“In response to this non-compliance, we hereby declare an indefinite strike action in the following Local Government Areas: Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo, and Ohaukwu.

“All our state and branch officers in the affected local government areas are instructed to adhere strictly to this directive and ensure the immediate enforcement of the strike action from 12:00 am on Thursday, 6th February 2025.

“This includes organising and maintaining solidarity picket lines and monitoring the compliance of the strike action across the affected localities.

“The failure of these local government chairmen to meet their obligation to our members is unacceptable, and we will not relent until our demands are met. We call on our members to remain steadfast and continue their support for the strike action,” he said. Sun

  • Senate approves sack of Sokoto, Abia, Adamawa RECs

Senate approves sack of Sokoto, Abia, Adamawa RECs

The Senate on Wednesday approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to terminate the appointments of the Resident Electoral Commissioners in charge of Sokoto, Abia, and Adamawa States.

The affected RECs include: Dr. Nura Ali (Sokoto); Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari (Adamawa State and Prof.Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu (Abia)

The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration and approval of a motion moved by Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during plenary.

Tinubu had earlier in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the Senate to approve the termination of the appointments of the RECs who had been on suspension since 2023.

    Bamidele in his lead debate said: “Senate: Aware of an Executive Communication from Mr. President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation, requesting the Senate to invoke Section 157 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, to formally terminate the appointment of Dr. Nura Ali (Sokoto State Resident Electoral Commissioner); Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari (Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner) and Prof. Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu (Abia State Resident Electoral Commissioner), respectively;

“Also aware that the aforementioned Resident Commissioners were earlier suspended in 2023, bordering on allegations of infractions of Electoral Act; compromise of elections and abandonment of duty without cogent reasons.

    “Notes from security reports from the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services that Dr. Nura Ali was indicted for compromising the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections through acts of incompetence and corruption, whereby he reportedly confessed to having received the sum of $150,000 from politicians upon investigation by the DSS;

    “Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari was suspended by former President Muhammad Buhari after a prima facie case was instituted against him for usurping the power of the Returning Officer to declare the governorship election result; and Prof. Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu was suspended for undermining election processes by mishandling of logistics and abandonment Governorship and State Assembly elections as well as his refusal to rescheduled Supplementary elections;

    “Aware that by virtue of the provisions of section 157 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, which stipulates that: “…a person holding any of the offices to which this section applies may only be removed from that office by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed for inability to discharge the functions of the office whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause) or for misconduct”, the Senate is empowered to embark on this legislative process, which is aimed at setting the stage for the eventual removal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners;

“Also aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission is one of the offices mentioned in Subsection (2) of the aforementioned provision of the Constitution.

“Accordingly, it is apt for the Senate to invoke and activate the provision of Section 157 (1) of the Constitution to remove the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners in line with the resolve of the 10th Senate to uphold the rule of law and sustain the ideals of morality and the tenets of corporate governance in Nigeria,

“Accordingly resolves to: Invoke and activate the constitutional provision as enshrined in section 157 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, by forwarding an address, supported by a two-thirds majority of the Senate to be acted upon by Mr. President for the official removal of Dr. Nura Ali (Sokoto State Resident Electoral Commissioner); Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari (Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner); Prof. Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu (Abia State Resident Electoral Commissioner), respectively.

The Senate approved the prayer of the motion to terminate the appointments of the three RECS when it was put to voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary. Nation

  • GEANCO Foundation Holds ARTBurst Summit in Enugu

GEANCO Foundation Holds ARTBurst Summit in Enugu

The city of Enugu became a vibrant canvas of creativity and inspiration as ARTBurst, a Creative Arts Summit organized by GEANCO Foundation, brought together young, talented girls who are beneficiaries of the David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship for Girls Program.

Designed to nurture artistic talents, ignite imagination, and build confidence, the summit which was held from January 31st to February 1st, 2025, provided a rare opportunity for these girls to engage in an immersive creative experience.

Through hands-on workshops, mentorship sessions, and panel discussions, they were positioned to embrace their artistic abilities and dream beyond their circumstances.

    A Star-Studded Event with a Powerful Mission

A defining moment of ARTBurst was the presence of David Oyelowo, the internationally celebrated British-American actor, director, and producer, alongside his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, a multi-talented artist and storyteller. Afam Onyema, CEO and Co-Founder of GEANCO Foundation, also joined them on this transformative journey.

David Oyelowo shared a profound message with the participants, emphasizing that creativity is not just about making art—it is a tool for resilience, innovation, and self-expression. He reminded the girls that, despite the challenges they face, they have the power to shape their futures.

“The culture in Nigeria does not necessarily celebrate Art because it is not deemed a path to financial success. What we are trying to teach these girls is that attending workshops on digital art, music/ choreography, painting, skit making, or photography does not mean they will go on to do these things professionally. Rather, it opens up the aperture of what is possible” he said.

Jessica Oyelowo reinforced this message, offering the girls a heartfelt pep talk about overcoming fear, embracing individuality, and using creativity as a force for good.

    A Dynamic Learning Experience

The summit was an explosion of creativity, offering carefully curated activities that catered to a wide range of artistic interests:

Panel Discussions with Industry Experts: Participants gained insight into the realities of the creative industry, learning from professionals who shared their experiences, challenges, and career advice.

Hands-On Creative Workshops: From digital art and painting to skit making, photography, AI-driven video production, music, and choreography, the girls explored different art forms, enhancing their technical and storytelling skills.

Mentorship & Networking: One-on-one mentorship sessions allowed participants to engage with the hollywood stars, ask questions, and receive guidance on how to navigate their creative paths. Each session encouraged experimentation, collaboration, and self-discovery, helping the girls refine their skills while also exploring new creative possibilities.

A Celebration of Talent and Personal Growth

Beyond the structured sessions, ARTBurst was a space for self-expression, connection, and empowerment. Many of these young girls walked into the summit unsure of their abilities—but by the end, they had gained not just skills, but also a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.

They found a community of like-minded creatives, built friendships, and realized that their dreams were within reach.

One participant reflected, “Before ARTBurst, I didn’t believe I could draw. But now, I know that I have something special to offer. I feel inspired to keep creating and telling my own story.”

The Beginning of a New Chapter

As the summit came to a close, it was clear that ARTBurst was not just an event, it was a life-changing experience. These girls left with newfound courage, sharpened skills, and a support system that will continue to uplift them in their artistic and personal journeys.

Through the David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship for Girls and GEANCO Foundation, this initiative is paving the way for a new generation of creative young women. The impact of ARTBurst will extend far beyond these two days, as these girls continue to explore, create, and inspire others with their talents.

  • Gov Mbah Signs into Law Bill to Create One-stop Shop for Taxation in Enugu

Gov Mbah Signs into Law Bill to Create One-stop Shop for Taxation in Enugu

    …Ends Multiple Taxation

…Enugu Inland Revenue Service becomes autonomous

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has signed into law the bill to create a one-stop shop for tax collection and administration in Enugu State, thereby ending multiple taxation.

Entitled the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment and Consolidation of Revenue Administration) Law, 2025, the new legislation also makes the revenue collection agency autonomous and free of bureaucratic encumbrances.

Speaking at the short bill signing ceremony at Government House, Enugu, on Tuesday, Mbah described the law as a milestone in his administration’s quest enable the Ease of Doing business and make the state the premier destination for investment.

“I recall several times that I have engaged the business community, the organised private sector, and the market women. They have always complained about multiple taxation. People coming from everywhere with different types of government receipts to ask them to pay tax. That will end from today.

“With the signing of this bill into law, we now have one revenue collection point, whether for the market women, the organised private sector, and the different agencies of government. You would have one clear point where to pay your tax and you will be issued with the appropriate receipt of payment. That means you no longer have any other person coming for the collection of tax.

“It is very important because one of the core indicators of the Ease of Doing Business is to make sure that you have the ease of payment of your taxes and you do not have multiple channels where you are being dragged to pay taxes.”

According to the governor, the new law would effectively consolidate the revenues of the state and local governments, with each tier of government getting what is due to it at the end of the day such as is obtainable in land charges and Value Added Tax, VAT.

“The idea is that you have one point of collection, but the split is also done to the different tiers of government that this revenue is essentially due to.

“It is also important that we make this point very clear that this idea of the State Internal Revenue Service collecting on behalf of the other tiers of government is nothing new. As some of you already know, the Land Use Charge is paid to the local government, but collected by the state. So, what we are doing now is essentially consolidate all the other revenue types to ensure that there is one point of collection. So, this is a major milestone and it would also help us have a full line of sight to all the revenues we have in the state,” he stated.

He further explained that the Enugu State Inland Revenue Service would henceforth become autonomous.

“The Enugu State Inland Revenue Service is now able to act as an autonomous institution of the state government. It also means that they can now set targets and try to meet those targets the same way you run a business. It means that they now have the powers to hire and fire their employees. So, we are increasingly making the Revenue Service a professional body,” he added.

Mbah took the opportunity to explain that contrary to some misinformation, the massive rise in the state’s IGR was inspired by widening the tax net, plugging revenue leakages, and deployment of technology, rather than increasing tax rate.

“Let me be clear, we have not increased any tax in Enugu State. What we have essentially done and which is impacting our revenue growth is expansion of the tax net. We have also made sure that monies that were collected in cash before now are now adequately captured and paid into the state coffers,” Mbah said.

He commended the Enugu State House of Assembly for their support every step of the way, noting with gratitude the expeditiousness with which they treat executive bills.

Earlier in his remark, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, described the bill as a turning point in revenue collection in the state.

“One, it is going to improve the Ease of Doing Business. It is also going to improve the IGR of the state and also block all the loopholes in revenue collection and administration. It is a very good gift to the people of Enugu State,” he said.

  • Aura for Aura’; China hits back with tariffs on US goods after Trump imposes new levies

Aura for Aura’; China hits back with tariffs on US goods after Trump imposes new levies

    • Additional 10% tariff comes into effect on all China exports to US
    • Beijing slaps 15% levy on U.S. LNG, coal; 10% on crude, farm equipment
    • China starts anti-monopoly investigation into Google, imposes controls on rare earth exports
    • Trump pauses tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month
    • Mexico, Canada to bolster border enforcement

China on Tuesday slapped tariffs on U.S. imports in a swift response to new U.S. duties on Chinese goods, renewing a trade war between the world’s top two economies even as President Donald Trump offered reprieves to Mexico and Canada.

Additional 10% tariff across all Chinese imports into the U.S. came into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday (0501 GMT) after Trump repeatedly warned Beijing it was not doing enough to halt the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.

Within minutes, China’s Finance Ministry said it would impose levies of 15% for U.S. coal and LNG and 10% for crude oil, farm equipment and some autos. The new tariffs on U.S. exports will start on Feb. 10, the ministry said.

China also said it was starting an anti-monopoly investigation in Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O)

Google, while including both PVH Corp, the holding company for brands including Calvin Klein, and U.S. biotechnology company Illumina on its “unreliable entities list”.

Separately, China’s Commerce Ministry and its Customs Administration said it is imposing export controls on tungsten, tellurium, ruthenium, molybdenum and ruthenium-related items to “safeguard national security interests”. China controls much of the world’s supply of such rare earths that are critical for the clean energy transition.

Trump on Monday suspended his threat of 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada at the last minute, agreeing to a 30-day pause in return for concessions on border and crime enforcement with the two neighbouring countries.

But there was no such reprieve for China, and a White House spokesperson said Trump would not be speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping until later in the week.

During his first term in 2018, Trump initiated a brutal two-year trade war with China over its massive U.S. trade surplus, with tit-for-tat tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods upending global supply chains and damaging the world economy.

“The trade war is in the early stages so the likelihood of further tariffs is high,” Oxford Economics said in a note as it downgraded its China economic growth forecast.

Trump warned he might increase tariffs on China further unless Beijing stemmed the flow of fentanyl, a deadly opioid, into the United States.

“China hopefully is going to stop sending us fentanyl, and if they’re not, the tariffs are going to go substantially higher,” he said on Monday.

China has called fentanyl America’s problem and said it would challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization and take other countermeasures, but also left the door open for talks.

The U.S. is a relatively small source of crude oil for China, accounting for 1.7% of its imports last year, worth about $6 billion.

In 2019, Beijing slapped punitive tariffs on U.S. LNG, retaliating for Washington’s increase in tariffs on Chinese goods. The stakes are higher now, with China importing 4.16 million tons of U.S. LNG in 2024 worth $2.41 billion, nearly double 2018 volumes.

Stocks in Hong Kong pared gains after China’s retaliation, while the dollar strengthened and the Chinese yuan fell, dragging the Australian dollar lower.

“Unlike Canada and Mexico, it is clearly harder for the U.S. and China to agree on what Trump demands economically and politically. The previous market optimism on a quick deal still looks uncertain,” said Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis in Hong Kong.

“Even if the two countries can agree on some issues, it is possible to see tariffs being used as a recurrent tool, which can be a key source of market volatility this year.”

    NEIGHBOURLY DEALS

There was relief in Ottawa and Mexico City after both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said they had agreed to bolster border enforcement efforts in response to Trump’s demand to crack down on immigration and drug smuggling. That would pause 25% tariffs due to take effect on Tuesday for 30 days.

Canada agreed to deploy new technology and personnel along its border with the United States and launch cooperative efforts to fight organized crime, fentanyl smuggling and money laundering.

Mexico agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to stem the flow of illegal migration and drugs.

“As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome,” Trump said on social media.

Canadian industry groups, fearful of disrupted supply chains, welcomed the pause.

“That’s very encouraging news,” said Chris Davison, who heads a trade group of Canadian canola producers. “We have a highly integrated industry that benefits both countries.”

Trump suggested on Sunday the 27-nation European Union would be his next target, but did not say when.

EU leaders at an informal summit in Brussels on Monday said Europe would be prepared to fight back if the U.S. imposes tariffs, but also called for reason and negotiation. The U.S. is the EU’s largest trade and investment partner.

Trump hinted that Britain, which left the EU in 2020, might be spared tariffs.

Trump acknowledged over the weekend that his tariffs could cause some short-term pain for U.S. consumers, but says they are needed to curb immigration and narcotics trafficking and spur domestic industries. Reuters

Tinubu Swears-in Eight New Perm Secs, 21 RMAFC Commissioners

President Bola Tinubu yesterday administered oath of office on eight newly appointed federal permanent secretaries and 21 commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

  • FEC Approves $1bn for Primary Healthcare Services, N4.8bn for HIV Treatment

FEC Approves $1bn for Primary Healthcare Services, N4.8bn for HIV Treatment

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, February 3, approved $1 billion to strengthen primary healthcare services across the country.

The approval, aimed at boosting the government’s Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) programme, was announced by the finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun, after the FEC) meeting.

Edun said the International Development Association (IDA) provided two concessional loans of $500 million each, with an additional $70 million grants from other international bodies.

“This programme is very much in line with the direction of this administration – to focus on investing in the human capital of Nigerians. People are at the centre of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the minister said.

Similarly, the FEC approved N4.8 billion for the procurement of 150,000 HIV treatment packs to support Nigerians living with the virus.

Coordinating minister of health and social welfare, Muhammad Pate, disclosed this while addressing State House Correspondents after the FEC meeting.

HIV fund came days after global concerns over the temporary suspension of United States foreign aid funding, which threatened access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for millions of people, including Nigerians.

The freeze, introduced by  President Donald Trump’s administration, had raised fears of treatment disruptions in Nigeria, one of the countries heavily reliant on the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Meanwhile, following advocacy from global health organisations, the US granted a waiver for HIV treatment programmes, ensuring continued medication supply for affected patients.

Nigeria, which bears the highest HIV burden in Sub-Saharan Africa, has about two million people living with the virus, yet contributes less than 20 per cent of the required funding for HIV treatment and prevention. ICIR

  • Danish Consul General Impressed with Enugu Govt; Explores Partnership in Enugu

Danish Consul General Impressed with Enugu Govt; Explores Partnership in Enugu

…As Danish Govt, businesses seek more investment

The Government of Denmark has expressed its eagerness to expand the European nation’s business interests in Enugu State, expressing enthusiasm at partnering with the state in key sectors of the economy and other areas of mutual benefits.

Denmark, which is a member of the European Union, stated this when its government delegation and Danish businesses led by the Consul General of the Royal Danish Embassy in Nigeria, Jette Bjerrrum, met with the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, at Government House, Enugu, on Monday.

Bjerrum, who also doubles as the Head of Trade of the Danish Embassy in Nigeria, said their interest was inspired by shared values with Enugu State Government such as transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, as well as Governor Mbah’s speech at an event in Lagos.

She stressed that contrary to negative generalisation, Enugu State was an example that many good things were happening in Nigeria.

“People Google all the bad stories, but we want them to know the good stories too; to say this (Enugu State) is also Nigeria, and this is where good people build trust and work with transparency, accountability, and traceability.

“I am here to understand what is important for Enugu. They (Denmark and Enugu State) have similarities. Transparency, accountability and transformation are important values for Enugu. They are also important values for Denmark. Inclusion, diversity and equality at all levels for everybody also.

“What we hear as music from the governor is the focus on children, the focus on our young people. The Smart School initiative, which is really impressive. The agriculture value chain. The waste and the waste to energy transformation. All the logistics initiatives that are going on. The international airport, the cargo space and the healthcare projects that are also being driven by the Governor. We are really impressed.

“We now need to be fast because things really move fast here in Enugu. We are here to figure out how we can help to improve on them more. We have Danish companies here. We have the group that is supplying the first tractors. We have a new tractor assembly centre. So, how do we get more Danish companies to come here, establish themselves and work together with Enugu citizens? That’s why we’re here,” she stated.

“We come from a country of waste to power, wind and solar energy. We know you cannot do it in a day, but we would like to know how to support the process, and then capacity building.

“The low hanging fruits will be in agriculture because that is what we do. That will also include logistics and so forth,” she concluded.

Speaking, Governor Mbah restated his government’s commitment to not only create a business-friendly environment, but to also de-risk investment, encourage investors through offtakes, noting that the visit by the Danish delegation was a major boost for his administration’s effort to grow the state’s economy sevenfold to the tune of $30 billion in the next six years.

“We have already signed an agreement with the Danish Company, ODK Group, and that agreement is going to see us procure tractors from them. What is also interesting is that they are also willing to have their assembly plant here. But we feel that this is just an entry point.

“We also have over 300,000 hectares secured as landbank for agriculture. So, just as Denmark, agriculture is also our lifeblood. 40 per cent of our economy is predicated on agriculture.

“We equally have an initiative that we are implementing now called Farm Estate, which is across the 260 electoral wards in Enugu. So, each ward is going to have a massive expanse of land that is going to be access-controlled.

“We also plan to create value on those products. So, we are setting up Special Agro-Processing Zones that will come up soon. This is going to be a one-stop shop for manufacturers where you will have everything you need to have for manufacturing like water, access roads, electricity, even the houses and the warehouses. You just plug and play.

“In livestock, we are investing hugely and we are also looking for partnership in that regard. We have secured about $20 million for investment in livestock. We are working on a massive ranch; we expect that ranch to take over 20,000 cows,” he added.

Mbah also highlighted opportunities in various other sectors such as tourism, health, logistics, and aviation.
