  • The President who rules a nation with deteriorating healthcare Infrastructure runs off to London in pursuit of Medical treatment

President Muhammadu Buhari will proceed to London, the United Kingdom, for scheduled medical follow-up today.

A statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Buhari is expected back in the country during the second week of July, 2021.

Buhari was away for two weeks between March 30 – April 16 for routine medical checks.

He had been routinely criticised by citizens for his constant medical trips to the UK, especially given the rot in the country’s healthcare infrastructure and government failure to commiting funds into the rehabilitation or putting on ground state-of-the-art medical facilities as found abroad to address critical ailments suffered by citizens.

  • UNICEF budgets $10m to fight malnutrition in children

The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) will, this year, spend $10 million to procure ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF).

This is among the global agency’s efforts to combat disabilities and deaths resulting from acute malnutrition, especially among children across the country,

Describing the RUTF as lifesaving, the UNICEF said Nigeria, with 17 million malnourished children at any point and 2.2 million children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM), is currently first in Africa and second in the world with the highest burden of malnourished children.

It called for increased local production of RUTF and micronutrient powders to augment the ones imported to the country by donors in order to make treatment available, accessible and affordable.

The UNICEF Chief of Nutrition in Nigeria, Nemat Hajeebhoy, said this during a virtual consultative meeting of the Minister of Health with local producers of nutrition commodities.

Read Also: Insecurity threatens access to immunisation services in Northeast – UNICEF

She said: “We must ensure that the resources allocated by the government to combat malnutrition are utilised. SAM is a major killer, and it puts a child 11 times more at the risk of dying of other diseases. If not treated, about 19 per cent of the 2.2 million children with severe acute malnutrition will die.

“Children with SAM can be treated with ready-to-use therapeutic foods. We also need to boost the local production of RUTF.

“UNICEF, in partnership with the government, is committed to scaling up the treatment of acute malnutrition. In Nigeria, from 2018, UNICEF has spent between $11 million to $21 million on RUTF. For 2021, UNICEF will spend $10 million on RUTF.”

Health Minister Dr. Osagie Ehanire said that the Federal Government fully supported domestic production and would support any step to facilitate it.

“As much as the government wants to support domestic production, we also want to be sure that the producers meet the rules and standards set by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“In response to the high prevalence of malnutrition, the Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced the community management of acute malnutrition which is focused on early identification of malnourished children, and the treatment of those with severe acute malnutrition using the highly efficacious evidence-based RUTF,” he said.

  • Chilo-Offiah, Governor Ugwuanyi’s SPA on SME Gifts Medical Equipments to Gburus-Care Initiative (GCI).

Chilo-Offiah, Governor Ugwuanyi’s SPA on SME Gifts Medical Equipments to Gburus-Care Initiative (GCI).

Says Love is what Governor Ugwuanyi represents and Love is what GburusCare is all about.

Earlier today, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State on SME, Hon. Arinze Chilo-Offiah magnanimously donated some medical equipments to the GburusCare Initiative. The equipments were presented to members of the GburusCare team at the State SME center.

During the presentation, Hon. Arinze, who celebrated his 33rd birthday recently by paying the school fees of over 120 Udi secondary school students in a heart touching show of love, remarked that he was spurred to contribute to the sustenance of the initiative given the organization and consistency with which the managers of the healthcare program had continued to traverse the length and breadth of Enugu State reaching out to old people.

Hon. Arinze’s birthday celebration with secondary school students of Udi

He said “On Saturday, 1st of May 2021, I was opportune to support a medical outreach for senior citizens that was carried out in my community, Umuavulu in Udi Local Government Area, by a professional healthcare team from the GburusCare Initiative. My team and I covered the logistics, provided tent, food, power generator, etc., for the team. For me, ensuring that our aged parents received free medical attention such as dental care, blood pressure test, drug prescription among others are ways of giving back to my community. The turnout was massive and seeing our parents’ faces light up with joy made me glad. Today, I have donated these little equipments so that this good can get to more people.” He commended highly the impact of the GburusCare initiative so far, adding that love is what Gov. Ugwuanyi represents and love is what GburusCare is all about.

    During the Outreach on Saturday

The GburusCare team appreciated his gesture as a creative encouragement and thanked the SME boss for his thoughtfulness and magnanimity.

  • Social media toxicity and Criticisms

There is a ‘’SARS’’ in some Nigerians; reservoirs of cynicism, misanthropy and bigotry. These ones see other people through the bifocals of their own vile existence. Just like SARS, the notorious but disbanded police unit, profiles young Nigerians with tattoo branding and dreadlocks, this category of Nigerians reduces every individual to an offender. You are guilty without charges, convicted and summarily sentenced – by the self-appointed rogue jury!

That predilection for exacting jungle (in)justice on alleged offenders in the streets is very much the same on Nigeria’s social media platforms – where you expect to find refined people above the stratum of ‘’agberos’’. It is all the same – in the streets and on social media district. Nigerian Twitter, in particular, is a toxic locale – defiant to order and devoid of joy. There is that proclivity for ‘’gotcha gotcha’’. It is always about ‘’dragging this person or that person’’. I must say, very angry creatures take residence there.

A few days ago, Japheth Omojuwa, the digital media entrepreneur, was the whipping boy of these internet infestations. They clobbered, scratched and gored him with pitchforks and daggers, even throwing dynamites into the mix. Much of their grouse with the gentleman was the side he chose to support in the 2015 election. They seized a moment to creep out of their crevices and forgotten neck of the woods to extract a toll. I have never seen such virulence and turpitude on social media before.

We are a nation of extremists. When you stray from the single narrative promoted by some compromised persons, you become an enemy pencilled down for demolition. Is this not a tyranny of opinion? How did we become so vile, unfeeling, and sadistic? The beauty of intellection is in the variety and robustness of opinions. Why must everyone submit to a lone account – even if it is falsehood? Why should everyone hold the same opinion?

What is happening on Nigerian social media is akin to the Dark Ages where people were hanged for having contrary opinions. And the Dark Ages was a blot on humanity – because knowledge was forbidden. We are in an era of intellectual darkness in Nigeria where all opinions must be unitary and must conform to certain ethnic and religious prejudices.

Some of the loudest voices accusing others of extremism are themselves extremists, who ambush and savage contrary opinions. It must be their way or the Milky Way to assaults and threats.

How did we become so pugnacious that we will tear anyone and anything that does not agree with us?

We are all potential victims of mob (in)justice. The mob runs Nigeria’s social media. You either fall in line with the governing narrative or risk violence. This mob rule has to end.

  • Building Wealth: 4 Different Types of Wealth

Wealth is the abundance of valuable possessions or money. Personal gifts which are also our natural gifts are certain qualities or abilities that we possess that make each individual unique. It is worth explaining here why wealth does not come from your job but from natural gifts or abilities because a lot of people confuse getting rich with being wealthy; these two are quite different. Being wealthy does not only have to do with our finances. There are four types of wealth, financial, physical, time and social wealth. When a person is wealthy, it simply means that the person has a sustainable means for financial health and freedom for life and for generations to come.

Although having a well-paid job could be a means for one to get rich, it does not quite give you room to make wealth. Many people who earn highly might not be fulfilled because it is not something they love to do or because they feel they aren’t putting some hidden attributes they have to use.

Our gifts as individuals are those things that are endowed in us naturally, and therefore cannot be taken away from us. They come in the form of talents, abilities, attributes, inborn skills. The key to creating wealth with these gifts is to identify them and put them to full use.

Natural gifts could include abilities such as, leadership, running a business, being a parent, empathy, talents, and other inborn skills. For instance, if your natural gift and passion are being a parent, aside from catering to your kids, you can start a career of looking and catering to children and with your passion and persistence. You can pave the way for yourself over a period of time and by this means acquire all forms of wealth.

You need to ask yourself, Is there something that I love to do? Do I have passion for something? Is there an attribute peculiar to me? Have I discovered them? If you have discovered them, great, but if not and you do not feel fulfilled with your current status, you have to take time to discover who you really are.

There’s a saying that “You are not what you studied in school but who you were created to be.” If you look beyond your current job and reflect on your unique abilities and how you can put them to use, then that’s a great way to start, unless your job aligns with your gifts and passions. Though you need to expand upon your gifts and abilities to make them worthwhile.

When you are putting your gifts and special abilities to use, you tend to do better at them because you love what you are doing and are willing to give it your very best. This, compared to working at a firm where you feel restricted, you remain there just to make ends meet. This does not mean you should get out of whatever job you are doing currently if you have already discovered your gifts, but take time to plan towards putting your gifts to full potential.

Discover your natural gifts, we all have one or two deposited in us and work towards making use of them to acquire financial, time, social an d physical wealth.

  • There is a critical need for housing for older LGBT people – Britain

Britain’s first LGBT+ retirement home is set to open in mid-2021, the housing association behind the London riverside apartments said, highlighting a growing market of older people who do not want to be forced back in the closet.

There is a critical need for housing for older LGBT+ people, said Anna Kear, Chief Executive of Tonic Housing, as many say it would be “terrifying” to live in a predominantly straight home where other residents did not accept them.

“People say that if they get to that stage, they would rather (die by) suicide than go into a heterosexual care home or sheltered housing environment, which is just awful,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

With an ageing population, the demand for specialist housing for older people is growing, with private retirement units accounting for 0.6 per cent of British homes and worth about 29 billion pounds in 2018, according to the estate agency Knight Frank.

Tonic Housing, which works to address loneliness in older LGBT+ people, is selling shares of up to 75 per cent in 19 apartments designed by renowned architect Norman Foster in the Bankhouse retirement community, which has a roof terrace by the Thames.

The housing association secured a 5.7 million pound loan from London mayor Sadiq Khan to buy the apartments in the borough of Lambeth, where almost six per cent of residents identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual – the highest percentage in England.

“Our approach to services and support will not just be ‘LGBT+-friendly’ but genuinely affirming of the lives, histories, needs and desires of LGBT+ people,” Tonic Housing said on its website, adding that sales would start in a couple of months.

“This does not imply exclusion of those who do not identify as LGBT+, but actively values those who respect and celebrate LGBT+ people,” it said, estimating that Britain has more than 1 million LGBT+ people over 50.

While the scheme is set to be Britain’s first LGBT+ retirement centre, they are relatively common in the United States, where the number of LGBT+ people over 50 is set to more than double to seven million by 2030 from three million today.

The percentage of Britain’s population that identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual is steadily rising, from 1.6 per cent in 2014 to 2.2 per cent in 2018, official data shows.

There is a clear shift among younger people – a little more than half of 18- to 24-year-olds say they are only attracted to the opposite sex, an Ipsos Mori poll found last week.

Stephen Lowe, a spokesman for retirement specialist Just Group, said Britain could see more LGBT-specific retirement centres in the future.

  • Dr. Okey Okonkwo to be Installed as the 5th District Governor of Rotary District 9142.

Dr. Okey Okonkwo to be installed as the 5th District Governor of Rotary District 9142.

To simplify the administrative process of Rotary, Clubs (supervised by Presidents) are grouped into Zones (supervised by Assistant Governors); thus, Zones are made up of a number of Clubs. These Zones and Clubs make up Districts which are supervised by District Governors. In Nigeria, there are four Districts – Districts 9110, 9125, 9141 and 9142.

District 9142 consists of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. It is equally supervised by a District Governor. Aside service projects that promote peace, fight diseases, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies and protect the environment, Rotary has activities that help strengthen its internal structure thus reinforcing the zeal to do more in serving communities. One of such activity is the installation ceremony of her leaders. Installation ceremonies are formal events that draw attendance from far and near. They mark official investiture of leaders who openly accept their roles and responsibilities and further pledge to uphold the tenet of Rotary by practicing Rotary’s motto of ‘Service above Self’. Such ceremonies also provide a suitable platform to attract and gain support for Rotary by raising funds to sponsor projects. In this case, it is the installation ceremony of the 5th District Governor of Rotary International District 9142.

The installation ceremony is a formal event marked by features that support the good causes of Rotary. Rotarians are hand-raisers and the sign-us-up volunteers who selflessly give their time and talents to help those in need, to strengthen and lift up communities, to make someone’s day brighter, to lessen the load and improve people’s lives. Occasions such as installation ceremonies that mark the formal institution of leaders serve as a perfect opportunity for persons and organizations to formally recognize the hard work and efforts of Rotarians as they continue to volunteer and serve humanity selflessly. While there is no doubt that the world is indeed grateful to Rotarians for the good they keep doing, sometimes, we as humans, forget to express that gratitude in a way that resonates: the Installation of the 5th District Governor of Rotary International District 9142 is a well appropriated and articulated platform.

As Rotarians maintain a laser focus on their goal of achieving a better world through volunteer services, support to Rotary activities could act as a great boost and fuel further growth and commitment for selfless services. As Rotarians, we serve humanity, help others, love everyone and care for each other. Reciprocating this gesture by supporting the installation ceremony of our District Governor will surely add wings to our abilities and capabilities.

With gratitude, we look forward to having you share with us your compassion for service; with your support we can impact our communities in a lasting way.

    Understanding Rotary:

Talking about Rotary is both an exciting and difficult task: Because it simply means talking about an organisation, a group of people found everywhere, creating positive impacts around the world. It also means taking a sum of all these and pinning it down to a definitive term.

Rotary started as a single story far back 1905 in the city of Chicago, with just four persons (Paul Harris, Sylvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey and Gustavus Loehr), but today its story can be told in multiple layers.

Rotary is a community of community leaders; this very noble organisation with an unending desire to serve humanity takes ordinary people and gives them extraordinary opportunity to do more with their lives than they ever dreamed possible.

Quoting Rotarians-in-Action, “Rotary may not have invented service, but Rotary perfected it.” The ultimate purpose of Rotary is to serve; service and benefit for all communities even as it strives to reach everywhere, spreading goodwill to every region of the world.

    Who are Rotarians?

Rotarians bear the emblem of Rotary. To be a Rotarian means being the reason someone smiles and have the cause to live on. Rotarians turn aims and ideals into actions while lowering barriers to help promote cooperation and understanding worldwide. People achieve self-actualisation in different ways; for Rotarians, it is in serving.

Rotarians take action to create positive impacts, this goes to support Richard Louis Evan’s notion that “Doing is the Rotary way of serving”, this act of ‘doing’ is super contagious; it is a flu caught by every Rotarian. It provides the energy and motivation to keep on serving.

More Rotarians, more Rotary clubs, more friends and more supports equate a better world.

Supporting the Good Cause of Rotary

Rotary unite leaders from all continents, cultures and occupation to exchange ideas and take action in communities around the world. Rotary is made up of three parts: The Clubs, Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation. Together, these three parts work to make lasting change in our communities and around the world.

Rotary Clubs are grounded in the same values, addressing diverse and unique needs. The Club structure allows members to come together to strengthen their connections to friends and neighbours and their commitment to improving lives. They contribute their time, their energy and their hearts at just about every way possible.

  • Insecurity and Food inflation in Nigeria, Finding solutions to poor management

Insecurity and Food inflation in Nigeria, Finding solutions to poor management

THE coronavirus pandemic has contributed a lot to the current food inflation ravaging Nigerian families. Coming in February/March, the beginning of the planting season, and forcing a prolonged national lockdown, it prevented many of our farmers from sowing their seeds.

Food inflation, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, rose from 16.66 per cent to 17.38 per cent in September this year and getting worse as the year draws to a close.

General inflation in the economy stands at 14.33 per cent. The prices of staple food items such as yam, garri, pepper, onions, rice, tomatoes and others have gone sky high at a time when the incomes of average families have dwindled or run out altogether due to layoffs and pay cuts.

It promises to be a very bleak Yuletide festive period.

The situation we face could have been much more manageable if the President Muhammadu Buhari administration had made good its campaign promise of solving our security problem which is part of the regime’s three-point agenda: economy, security and anti-corruption.

Indeed, the security situation has worsened under the watch of this regime due mainly to poor management and the kid gloves with which it has treated aspects of our insecurity.

Though the Federal Government often beat its chest that it has dislodged Boko Haram jihadists from their captured territories, the terrorists have multiplied beyond Boko Haram, with the Islamic State in West Africa Province, ISWAP, now equally formidable.

The foreign bandits that some evil politicians had brought to fight their turf wars have now turned their guns on residents of states in the North West and North Central, particularly Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna Niger and parts of Kogi.

Also, armed Fulani militias from all parts of Africa masquerading as herdsmen have flooded the forests and farmlands of states in the Middle Belt and South, killing and kidnapping for ransom, robbing, destroying farmlands with their cattle and forcibly settling on people’s lands.

Curiously, the herdsmen militias are the only terrorist groups that government has refused to tag the terrorists that they are. It has also refrained from deploying the army to flush them out of our bushes.

All these agents of insecurity marauding all over Nigeria have succeeded in displacing farming communities and making farming unsafe.

Farmers are afraid to engage in their legitimate occupation. With the closure of the borders and restrictions on food importation, it is not surprising that Nigeria is on the verge of famine.

If the Federal Government is unwilling to get rid of the armed herdsmen, then it should allow each community to deal with them and allow farmers back to work. Without solving our insecurity problems there are simply no ot her ways out of this problem.

  • Cardiovascular health – What you should know

According to research presented at the scientific congress of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging held recently, climbing four flights of stairs in less than a minute indicates good heart health.

As reported by sciencedaily.com, the study included 165 symptomatic patients referred for exercise testing because of known or suspected coronary artery disease.

“Participants walked or ran on a treadmill, gradually increasing the intensity, and continuing until exhaustion. Exercise capacity was measured as metabolic equivalents (M ETs)

“After resting for 15 to 20 minutes, patients were asked to climb four flights of stairs at a fast pace without stopping, but also without running, and the time was recorded,” the scientists wrote.

They analysed the relationship between METs achieved during exercise testing and the time it took to climb four flights of stairs. Patients who climbed the stairs in less than 40-45 seconds achieved more than 9-10 METs. Previous studies have shown that 10 METs during an exercise test is linked with a low mortality rate. In contrast, patients who took 1.5 minutes or longer to climb the stairs achieved less than eight METs, which translates to a mortality rate of two to four per cent per year, or 30 per cent in 10 years.

The study author, Dr. Jesús Peteiro, who is a cardiologist at the University Hospital A Coruña, Spain, said, “The stairs test is an easy way to check your heart health. If it takes you more than one-and-a-half minutes to ascend four flights of stairs, your health is suboptimal, and it would be a good idea to consult a doctor.”

“This study was conducted to examine the relationship between a daily activity – i.e. climbing stairs – and the results obtained from exercise testing in a laboratory. The idea was to find a simple and inexpensive method of assessing heart health. This can help physicians triage patients for more extensive examinations.”

Peteiro noted that the correlation between the stairs time and exercise capacity would be similar in the general population. But the corresponding mortality rates and heart function by imaging would be more favourable than for patients with symptoms and suspected or confirmed coronary artery disease.

  • Paternity Scandal : “What you don’t know about my troubled marriage” – Moyo Thomas

The lady at the centre of the trending story involving the Managing Director of First City Monument Bank, FCMB, Mr. Adam Nuru over the paternity of her two children, Mrs Moyo Thomas has finally come out of her shell to reveal the circumstances that led to her separation from her late husband, Mr. Tunde Thomas.

For over a week, social media have been awash with allegations of infidelity against Moyo leading to doubts about the paternity of her two young kids. She was accused of having an affair with Adam while she was still living with Thomas and that her kids are products of the illicit affair while she worked with Adam in FCMB before her relocation to the United States in 2017. Thomas was said to have died as a result of the trauma suffered from the scandal while Adam during the week stepped down from his seat as the bank MD to go on vacation to allow for a proper investigation of the swirling allegations. Though Moyo’s friends and family members had spoken in her defence, but in a statement personally signed by her and made available to Saturday Sun yesterday, Moyo told her story herself.

“I write in reference to all the allegations and accusations that have recently been making the rounds on the internet and various social media platforms. I have refrained from responding to this matter for various reasons, one of which is to preserve the memories of Tunde who departed to be with his maker on December 16, 2020. Memories, not only to me, but to his children, who are still young, and to everybody who had a relationship with him.

“Just like any marriage, Tunde and I had a lot of differences in our marriage, some of which even led to police intervention . But I remain committed to keeping only positive memories of him. No one can ever understand what transpired between us or what each of us experienced in the marriage; like they say, it is he who wears the shoes that knows where it pinches. In all of it, I never for once wished him bad. His untimely and sudden death is still a shock to me as it is to many others.

“On no occasion did I ever tell him he was not the father of our two children. It is therefore deliberate falsehood and certainly malicious to allege and insinuate that I informed him that the children are not his. The children still bear his name. Only God knows why he died in an untimely period.
