The Enugu born legal practitioner and Highlife Musician, Barr. Ugochukwu Uneabunso, known better by his stage name, Une 50, has released a new single titled ‘Igba-Ego’.
The single which was written and recorded by the Highlife sensation was released a few weeks ago.
Speaking to newsmen about the message of the hit song, Une 50 explained that the song spoke to the interplay of having a good name and accumulating wealth.
“The central theme of the song is centered on the undeniable fact that a good name is better than riches. Regardless, the fact is that the beauty and sweetness of life lies in riches.
“Another theme the song teaches is that people are so concerned with wanting to be like another person, forgetting that we are all created differently by God. Through the song, I am encouraging everyone to desire to be the best of their kind, unique in their own way(s)”.
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has joined other well-meaning Nigerians to mourn the death of Nigeria’s veteran musician, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on Tuesday, describing it as the exit of a nightingale and a music icon.
Mbah said the demise of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu; lawmaker representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, and the songstress in quick succession had dug a big hole in the hearts of Ndigbo, Nigerians, Africans, and the music world as a whole.
Reacting to the news of the unfortunate development on Wednesday, Mbah said, “This is yet another sad development for the nation in general and Ndigbo in particular. Coming on the heels of the demise of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Distinguished Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Onyeka Onwenu’s sudden death is one death too many and has dug a gaping hole in our hearts. As the late Ghanaian poet and diplomat, Kofi Awoonor, would put it, death has indeed made war upon our house.
“Onyeka Onwenu was a music icon, a songstress par excellence, and a nightingale personified. She was born to sing, and she delivered on her earthly mission in memorable and superlative manners, winning many awards in the process.
“She was also a woman of courage, a social crusader, a patriot, and lover of her people, who never shied away from speaking up in defence and advancement of truth, justice and equity
“Onwenu will be sorely missed, but it is consoling that she lived life to the fullest of her talents, sowing herself indelibly in the heart of humanity and will, like all legends, be remembered for many generations to come. I pray God to grant her soul eternal repose and comfort her family, the nation, and, indeed, Africa.”
Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, officially announced her passing the singer and songwriter’s demise on Wednesday.
“It is with heavy hearts that my brother and I want to announce the passing of our mother, the much-loved Onyeka Onwenu,” statement reads in part.
They explained that the multitalented artiste passed away in Lagos, Tuesday night.
Ms Onyeka Onwenu, a veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress, has reportedly died at the age of 72.
The iconic singer, according to reports on Tuesday night, was said to have slumped after performing at the birthday ceremony of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals at Banana Island, Lagos.
According to an eye witness, after performing on stage, the iconic singer walked back to her seat, where she slumped. Emergency services were quickly called in and she was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos where she was pronounced dead.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” the eye witness said. The cause of death was not known as of press time.
The Guardian Newspaper reports that the legendary singer was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island. However, her family is yet to confirm the death.
Onyeka Onwenu, who was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, also had a career in politics. She served as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
The legendary singer whose music career began in the 1980s, released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981 and has since released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”
Aside from music and her involvement in politics, Onwenu also acted in several Nollywood films and has won numerous awards for her contributions to music and film. She has been recognised as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.
Onwenu was recognised by the Nigerian government in 2011 with the award of the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). She has also been recognized as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organisations.
Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor, has died after a prolonged illness, at the age of 62.
This was disclosed by a social commentator, Morris Monye, via his X handle, on Sunday.
Muonagor was said to have suffered kidney failure and was on dialysis.
The sudden news of his demise comes just few days after a viral video where he solicited funds to help him have a Kidney transplant.
Monye wrote, “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing.
“He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful.
“We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India.
“This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Muonagor, a native of Idemili, in Anambra, was born Aug. 20, 1962.
He was an actor and producer. In 2016, he was nominated for AMVCA 2017 Best Actor in a comedy.
In 1989, after his youth service, Muonagor started working for the News Agency of Nigeria. He left his job a few years later for an acting role in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.
Pacesetter reports that Netizens have taken to social media to express their death over his loss using hashtags like #RIP Legend, #Amaechi Muonagor.
They lamented that his death occurred less than one month after another comic actor, John Okafor a.k.a Mr. Ibu died.
Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor has called on Nigerians to assist him financially to carry out a kidney transplant in India.
In a video circulating on social media, the popular actor was seen laying on a bed, pleading for help.
His Nollywood colleague Kingsley Orji, who was seated next to him, made an appeal on his behalf.
Orji revealed that Amaechi Muonagor left the teaching hospital some days ago due to financial constraints.
He stated that the illness had affected his speech and urged fans and well-wishers to contribute for a transplant surgery.
“It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. What we want is for you to help us for him to travel to India,” Orji said.
“He just came back from the ICU in Nnewi teaching hospital a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well.
“We decided to bring him home because there was no money but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.”
Recall in November 2023, Amaechi Muonagor had cried out for help after revealing that he was battling paralysis which has affected half of his first leg
His words: “I’m sick, this thing that is called stroke caught up with me, and from there they rushed me to the hospital. The first hospital they rushed me to was in Nnewi, where I spent some two months and I was referred to Teaching Hospital Nnewi and here I am.
“I was on a movie set with Emeka Ani, Patience Ozokwo, Rita Edochie, and Ebele Okaro. I was about to enter my car when I was struck with this problem and since then it has been getting worse. Right now, I can’t move, I can’t walk on my own. Half of my left leg is paralyzed, my left hand is not movable, so it is a problem for me.
“I’m calling on well spirited individuals to come to my assistance, to see how they can help me. It is paralysis, half of my body.”

Une 50 believes in using Highlife music to entertain and pass vital messages to the public in a unique way and style. Our correspondents had a short chat with him about his journey to music, inspiration, and many other aspects of his career. Excerpts:
Tell us about your first experience with Music and the journey so far
My first experience in music started with the Boys Brigade and choir, all in Emmanuel Anglican Church, Achara Layout, Enugu.
Who or what inspires you to make music? Why the highlife genre and what influences your lyrics?
Music itself is an inspiration that falls on you just like anointing and I always loved to be a lead vocalist. So many people are surprised that I sing because I have been a highlife trumpeter in all the bands I played with where I don’t even get to sing. I did my first ever recorded song in 2018 when I won an international pageant in Lagos as the “Duke of World Africa”. It was from there I started getting inspiration to do my original songs.
Why highlife? Well, I do some other songs like classical and gospel, but there’s this message that goes with Highlife, and besides all the bands I have played in the past were Highlife band or highlife/gospel band. My lyrics are always influenced by circumstances and things happening around us that is always what I use in making my music.
Are there any particular themes or messages you aim to convey through your music, and if so, why are they important to you?
I realized that most times it’s easier to convey a message through music. Someone who finds it difficult to read for hours could play and listen to music for hours. Music theme comes through occurrences of events, discussions, circumstances, etc. it just comes. It’s important because I know I can engage so many people through music.
What is it like building your music career in Abuja?
Well, everything you know is always a plus advantage to you. As a lawyer and in the process of rendering some legal services, I also found myself in a place where my musical gift was also needed, that’s “BLAKE RESORT ABUJA”. I gained popularity there and “Abuja Famous Celebrity Barrister” was accorded to me because of my performance.
What challenges have you faced in the music industry so far and how have you surmounted them?
It’s always resources and connections which is naturally overtaken by time. Life is always a process; however, consistency is a bigger key. So, I surmounted them by consistently following the process.
Let’s look at your new release ‘Igbagokwa boyi’? What’s it about?
The song IGBAGOKWA BOYI? The song is a deep message, just like in law, “Nemo nacitor artifex”, meaning, no man is born a craft man, igba boyi has that, too.
IGBA BOYI is not limited to those in the market who probably never went to school. I went for an endowment program organized by Igbo Lawyers Association (Otu Oka Iwu) Abuja branch, where a Professor, Sam Amadi, of Harvard told us the Harvard teaches Igba boyi (Igbo’s successful transfer of wealth). I am sure that people will not read the article as much as they will listen to the song. Igba boyi is just a reality that you must go through the process in everything and every area of growth you find yourself.
Let’s talk about collaborations with other artists. Are there specific artists you hope to collaborate with in the future?
Of course. I would like to do a song with those who has passed the stage I am now and those in my stage, and those whose stage I have crossed. I would like to do songs with Flavour, Umuobiligbo, Phyno, Anyi Dons Burns Boy, and other artists whose style would blend with mine.

What other interests do you have besides music?
Legal practice and public speaking are other areas I also find interesting.
…the essence of the second annual cultural festival is foster peace and prosperity in Obuoffia – Chairman, Obuoffia Culture

The people of Obuoffia Awkunanaw in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State have announced the second edition of their cultural festival for December 31, 2023.
The festival which is to hold at the Obuoffia Central School Field (Mission) by 3pm, is expected to showcase the richness of the culture of the people of Obuoffia through the unveiling of different masquerade and dance groups.
Speaking to Pacesetter in Enugu, the Chairman, Obuoffia Cultural Group, Nnabuike Ani said the event is open to all, promising attendees a rich display of culture and entertainment.
Ani who noted that culture was a tool for togetherness, reiterated the preparedness of the cultural group to host the people.
In his words, “The Obuoffia Cultural Festival debuted in 2022. The event which has elicited the interest of ndi Obuoffia at home and in the diaspora has its essence as to foster peace and prosperity in Obuoffia.
“Promising to be entertaining, we are by this, inviting the general public, the good people in Obuoffia, Awkunanaw clan, the larger Nkanu nation and ndi Enugu to participate in this epoch-making event as we retell the identities of our forefathers and showcase, basically for entertainment and educational purposes, the richness of our culture”.
Earlier, the traditional head of Obuoffia and Igwe of Omuoha Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Barr. Igwesi Obi Igwesi, had, through the Obuoffia Welfare Association (OWA) led by Dr. Iyke Nnaji as her National President, presented a life cow and bags of rice with OWA adding cash gifts to the group in support of the cultural festival.
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has unveiled the Unity Christmas Party, Enugu, reiterating his administration’s commitment to make the state a premier destination for business, investment, tourism, and living.
Mbah said it was also in line with this mindset that his administration had invested so much in the security of lives and property, assuring that”Enugu is ready for investment.”
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Aka Eze Aka, said the state recognised the Christmas season as time for fun, relaxation, and spiritual immersion, and commended the Enugu State Tourism Board for creating a convivial environment for Enugu people, residents, and visitors to unwind and enjoy themselves during the yuletide.
In her remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Tourism Board, Dame Rita Mbah, said the Christmas Unity Park, situated opposite the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, was inspired by the tourism drive of the present administration, in which the industry is expected to contribute significantly to the quest to grow the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
She said that steps had been taken to ensure both ambience and safety at the park.
“We put the Christmas Unity Park together for Ndi Enugu to have fun, and we hope you all will enjoy it. It is open every day of the week, Monday to Sunday, from 9am to 11pm.
“This park is both secure and very safe. It has been well fumigated. We did a series of fumigation. We also made sure that all the electrical installations were all tucked in by laying the pipes and covering all the pipes where necessary. So, if you look around, you won’t see any of the pipes used in these aesthetical lights.
“We were equally intentional in creating the themes in different corners of the park to carter to the Christmas and holiday pleasures of every age category of fun seekers – children, youths, and the elderly.
“We also have the Santa Claus or Father Christmas resident in the bowl of the gigantic lion sculpture to ensure that the children really enjoy themselves.

A Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has granted leave to Isale Eko Descendants Union to seek an order compelling Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to impose a N10 billion fine against the Gangs of Lagos producers for the wrongful depiction of Isale Eko as a den of criminals and the Eyo Masquerade as a gang of murderers.
The court has also allowed Isale Eko’s descendants to apply for judicial review and seek an order of mandamus directing the Attorney General of Lagos State and Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board to sanction the film producers under the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State.
The presiding judge, Justice Idowu Alakija, recently granted the leave for judicial review in an ex-parte application brought pursuant to section 3 of the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State and Order 44 Rule 3 of the High Court Civil Procedure Rules.
Alakija granted the leave after hearing arguments of Counsel for Isale Eko Descendants Union and two others, Mr. Olasupo Shasore (SAN), Mr. Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), Mr. Aderemi Bashua (SAN), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, Akinwale Irokosu and Adesamola Alebiosu, Temi Tayo-Tiwo, Oyinkansola Tunde -Braimoh among others.
The applicants comprise Isale Eko Descendants’ Union, Chief Ayodele Bajulaiye, who sued on behalf of the Bajulaiye Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Bajulaiye, and Chief Abdul-Waheed Ayeni who sued on behalf of the Sasore Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Sasore.
They are challenging Mrs. Jadesola Soberu, Ms. Kemi Lala Akindoju, Mr. Adesegun Adetoro, Demi Olubanwo, Mr. Olumide Soyombo, Mr Bankole Wellington, Mrs. Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Mr. Kola Aina, Greoh Limited and Amazon Web Services Nigeria for alleged sacrilegious and scandalous depiction of the Eyo Masquerade in a movie production titled Gangs of Lagos.
In her decision recently, Alakija granted the applicants leave to apply for an order of mandamus against the Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to ban the film, Gangs of Lagos airing on Amazon Prime, for its false and defamatory depiction of the Eyo masquerade.
Alakija also granted the applicants leave to apply for judicial review and to seek an order of mandamus directing and compelling the attorney general and Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to perform their statutory duty under the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State and revoke the licence and approval granted to Greoh Studios and ‘The Make it Happen Productions’, the producers of “Gangs of Lagos” for depicting Isale Eko as a den of criminals and Eyo Masquerade as a gang of murderers and assassins.
The judge granted the applicants leave “to apply for judicial review and to seek an order of mandamus directing and compelling the attorney general and Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to perform their statutory duty under the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State and demand an account of the proceeds from exploitation and streaming of the illegal and defamatory depiction of Isale Eko as a den of criminals and the Eyo Masquerade, as a gang of murderers and assassins in the ‘Gangs of Lagos’ movie.”
The judge further granted the applicants leave “to apply for judicial review and to seek an order of mandamus directing and compelling the attorney general and Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to perform their statutory duty under the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State and seize the proceeds from exploitation and streaming of the illegal and defamatory depiction of Isale Eko as a den of criminals and Eyo Masquerade, as a gang of murderers and assassins in the ‘Gangs of Lagos’ movie.
She granted the applicants leave “to apply for judicial review and to seek an order of mandamus directing and compelling the attorney general and Lagos State Video and Film Censors Board to perform their statutory duty under the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State and impose a fine of N10 billion against the producers of the Gangs of Lagos movie….”

Nwachukwu Emmanuel Chinonso, also known as Daviblue, is an Enugu based up and coming artiste. He spoke to the Pacesetter crew about his musical journey so far, why he chose to remain in Enugu, the inspiration behind some of his lyrics and his new single, “Focus on Me”. Dateline: April 24, 2023.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane – Tell us about your journey in the music industry – When did you discover you wanted to make music? What was your first experience with music?
My musical journey started in secondary school where I studied, College of Immaculate Conception popularly known as CIC. Back in my junior class, JSS 3, I was a fan of Eminem and Lil Wayne, I was singing their songs in form of a karaoke, because I enjoy singing songs naturally. Along the line, I had this passion for music and dancing. I think I was more popular with dancing then than singing. At some point I would be invited in class to sing songs, especially Eminem’s “I’m not afraid”. From there I felt that was where I belonged, then I took it to the university, ESUT (Enugu State University of Science and Technology). That’s how music started in my life.
You’re staying in Enugu to build your music career while others are running to Lagos. What motivated your decision to build in Enugu? Aren’t you encountering challenges?
Well, Enugu is actually where I grew up, so I feel I want to start from where I’m based. It’s not a bad idea if I make it from here to the world. I know musicians like Duncan Mighty who started in Port Harcourt and from there, they’re going to anywhere in the world. I must not go to other cities or countries to make my name. God can bless you from anywhere, that’s what I believe. Enugu is where I come from, Nkanu East to be precise. I want to make my name from here to the world, maybe shows might come from Lagos or any part of the country but I still believe something great can start from here.
So, speaking of the industry here in Enugu, it’s challenging actually, very challenging. Here in Enugu, we have entertainment already. It has been here before I came to limelight as an up and coming artiste and aspiring star. I feel what can be done here in Enugu is to encourage and appreciate every creative artist making good music out there. I feel young and upcoming artists doing well in Enugu need to be appreciated, acknowledged, motivated to do more, when they’re invited for music shows, they need to be treated with respect, equality and regard, whether they’re in a label or not. They need to be treated equally with invited artists. I think if the entertainment industry sees a creative and innovative young artist that’s not in a label or has no high profile mentor to speak for them, they could at least try to acknowledge them, encourage them to come to music shows and display their talents. Let Love lead in the industry. That being said, it’s the challenge that’s making me who I am right now because I still want to prove to anyone including myself, my viewers and listeners that something can grow from very little finance and team. I’m good starting from Enugu.
How many songs have you made? What has been pushing you to keep making music?
I have a lot of songs but officially I have dropped two main tracks – “NOTICE” and the current one is “FOCUS ON ME “. A lot have inspired my music. It could be love, it could be challenges I face, it could be a motivational song, but these are just the two official songs I have right now.
Let’s look at two of your songs, the most recent song “FOCUS ON ME” and “NOTICE”, which has really profound punch lines. It seems like they were conceived from some really significant experiences – can you tell us about them?
I think there’s always an inspiration for every song. I always try to pass the messages that inspired the songs. For instance, if the song is about motivation, that’s me trying to motivate the listeners, if I’m telling a story in a song, that’s me trying to narrate my life ordeals or someone else’s ordeals, if the song is about love or romance, that’s me singing out of the lover boy in me, from my heart. Everything in my songs are inspired by my life, circumstances in my or some other person’s lives.
The inspiration for “NOTICE” came from two songs by Kiss Daniels and DJ Sharpzy (sings lyrics) “Omo na me as I dey here ooh ooh ooooh” – I came across the song when it was raining back then so I fell in love with the rhythm, the melody, the lyrics, the beats. I was a very good fan of that song back then. It was my inspiration for “NOTICE”. In addition, “NOTICE” was also inspired by the way things are going on in my life, like saying people are now seeing the blessings coming to me, the way I’m gradually rising, people noticing my success (sings lyrics) “E be like say na now dem dey notice”.
“FOCUS ON ME” is a love song inspired by one of my lovers back then. As an artiste, if you’re in a relationship and you have a jealous lover, it’s not always easy, you have to give the assurance that you’re always there for them, as long as they focus on you, you’d take them seriously, you won’t play them, you’ll be faithful and loyal to them, kind of an assurance to a lover. Basically it is just a song talking about doubtless feelings and loyalty between two lovers.
How have your songs performed on streaming platforms? Do you think you need improvements in some areas?
Well, so far the songs are doing well, I’m doing well in my own way with my team, but yes, I know I still need a lot of improvements in the streaming platforms. I’m doing good numbers on Spotify and Audio Mack. I still have some setbacks when it comes to Apple music and iTunes, normally because songs are purchased on those platforms. With time I’ll sort everything, I’ll get there, it’s a gradual process, step by step. A lot of the popular and successful artistes started the same way from somewhere, from smaller streams to the bigger streams that fetch them lots of money now. I still believe with time and consistency I’ll get there.
Which artistes are you looking to feature or collaborate with? Are you signed to any record label or are you independent?
I’m an independent artiste, I’m not signed to any record label yet. I’m open to taking on big deals that comes up. I’m looking to feature big artistes if I have the opportunity, like Jaywillz, Davido, Wizkid and Ycee. I’d like to feature M.I, Patoranking, Adekunle Gold, Simi, International artists like Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, etc.
Nigerian music industry is advancing and is becoming very open minded about having someone write songs for artistes, the industry is beginning to be acceptive of the fact that there’s nothing wrong with having someone write songs for an artiste. Do you have any experience with working with song writers? Do you have a team of song writers that add a bit of flavour to your lyrics?
No, I don’t have a team of song writers, all my songs are written by me. For the instrumentals, I work with the composers who try to coach me when I’m making some of these songs. Every lyrics, every melody, I make them myself.
Asides music, what other exciting things do you do? What other things are you passionate about?
Apart from music, I love fashion and modelling. I’d love to model for so many brands, go on runway shows for designer brands like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbanna, Dior, Puma, Cartier and others, I’d like to get endorsements from brands. I’m a lover of fashion and a fashion model for “Dre” brand. It’s just music, fashion and modelling, and I’m very passionate about them.
Are you working on any song presently? Can you tell us what it’s about?
As an artiste, you have to keep working on songs consistently. They say consistency is key right? You can testify to that, I’m consistently making music to put out more songs out there. I’m working on a song currently, it’s an Amapiano vibe – to blend the trend. I’m just trying to do something different, trying a different vibe. Expect more songs with different vibes, it could be rap, afrobeats, hip hop, according to my mood and inspiration. So, I have songs coming up – expect them very soon, you all get ready to dance.
What advice do you have for younger artists that are yet to make the first step, yet to come into the industry, yet to make any single music?
Coming in, it’s not going to be easy, but stay positive, keep doing your thing, stay consistent, don’t sit around waiting for help, help comes when you help yourself. Everybody’s experience is different so don’t give up, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.
Lagos State Government has expressed displeasure with the promoters of the “Gangs of Lagos” film/series over what it described as “cultural misrepresentation” as well as portraying the culture of the state in a derogatory manner.
In a reaction by the state government, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the Ministry, being the regulatory body and custodian of the culture of Lagos State, viewed the film/series as a mockery of the Heritage of Lagos.
Earlier, Prince Uthman Shodipe-Dosunmu, the Apesinọla Ẹyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa Ọkalaba Ẹkun, a cultural group, had condemned the film, calling for an immediate withdrawal.
Shodipe-Dosunmu described the film as “ethnic profiling, sacrilegious and outrageous trash.”
Meanwhile, the commissioner expressed her disappointment with the promoters of the film, Jade Osiberu and Kemi Akindoju, for portraying the Eyo Masquerade as a gun-wielding villain while adorning the full traditional regalia.
Instructively, the Eyo Festival is rarely observed and only comes up as a traditional rite of passage for Obas, revered Chiefs and eminent Lagos Indigenes while the Eyo Madquerade is used as a symbol of honour for such personalities and remarkable historical events.
According to Akinbile-Yussuf, “We are of the opinion that the production of the film ‘The Gang of Lagos’ is very unprofessional and misleading while its content is derogatory of our culture, with the intention to desecrate the revered heritage of the people of Lagos.
“It is an unjust profiling of a people and culture as being barbaric and nefarious. It depicts a gang of murderers rampaging across the State”.
The state government maintained that “the Adamu Orisha, popularly known as the Eyo Festival, is rarely observed and only comes up as a traditional rite of passage for Obas, revered Chiefs and eminent Lagosians.”
Akinbile-Yussuf, stressed that “the Eyo Masquerade is equally used as a symbol of honour for remarkable historical events.
“It signifies a sweeping renewal, a purification ritual to usher in a new beginning, a beckoning of new light, acknowledging the blessings of the ancestors of Lagosians.”
In an earlier reaction via a statement, Shodipe-Dosunmu, described the film as reckless, disgusting distortion of the sacred illustration of Lagos culture.
According to him, “There is a film presently being promoted by one Jade Osiberu and another character called Kemi Akindoju. The so called movie is an ugly, hate filled mockery of the Lagosian heritage.
“In their reckless, disgusting distortion of the sacred illustration of the Lagosian culture the film makers reduced the Eyo masquerade into a gun toting killing machine, clothing their misfit actors in the full regalia of the Eyo and with the Aga depicting some Conclaves.
“This is a total abomination. It is not only a distortion of our culture, it is a dark insidious profiling of our people as criminals and murderers rampaging across Lagos.
“The Adamu Orisha is a treasured cleansing ritual, a sacred rite performed on the passage of an Oba or for their coronation.
“It is also used to honor distinguished Lagosians as their final rite of transition.
“Since Ejilu and Malakin, the brothers of Olori Olugbani first initiated the Eyo rite in celebration of Oba Ado Keme, the Adamu Orisha has become a sacred ancestral heritage celebrated with awe and deserving adoration.
“It signifies a sweeping renewal, a purificational ritual to usher in a new beginning, a beckoning of new light, acknowledging the blessings of our ancestors.
“To use the sacred Adamu Orisha Masquerade as an object of terror and loose criminality is to savage and despoil the Lagosian tradition.
“It is vile, evil, perverse; an utterly sadistic mangling of who we are as peace loving, accommodating and enlightened people.
“We demand an immediate withdrawal of this sacrilegious and outrageous trash.
“We demand that the National Film and Video Censors Board and all appropriate authorities to ban this blatant mockery disguising as cinematography and impose the most punitive sanctions on the sponsors of this venomous ethnic profiling.
“We also appeal to the Lagos State Government, the Oba of Lagos Alayeluwa Oba Rilwan Akinolu, all the custodians of our tradition including the Alaworo of Adamu Orisha and Akinsiku Chief Ademola Dosunmu to rouse up in protective defense of our tradition against the ravages of these agents of condemnable pollution of all that we cherish in this sacred soil of Oba Ado Keme.
“Ethnic profiling is recognized as a crime against humanity by the International Court of Justice.
“This provision can also be invoked against these sacrilegious hate baiters.”
Gangs of Lagos: Indigenes petition NFVCB over defamation of Isale Eko, Eyo
Lagos indigenes under the aegis of the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) have petitioned the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) over alleged defamation of their community and Eyo masquerade in the Gangs of Lagos film.
In a statement signed by the Union’s Chairman, Mr Yomi Tokosi, Gangs of Lagos released on Amazon Prime Video on April 7, 2023, scandalously portrayed the Isale Eko community and Eyo in the bad light of platforms for criminal activities.
The union expressed displeasure that Isale Eko was painted as a crime hub in the film directed by Jadesola Osiberu, and co-produced by Kemi Akindoju, adding that it brought the indigenes into blatant shame.
The statement read, “The attention of the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union (IDU) has been drawn to the very disturbing violent images in a new movie directed by Jade Osiberu and Kemi Lala Akindoju, executive produced by Adesegun Adetoro, Demi Olubanwo, Olumide Soyombo, Bankole Wellington, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, and Kola Aina; and filmed by Greoh Studios, and released by Amazon’s Prime Video Nigeria called gangs of Lagos.”
IDU stated further, “In the movie, the unique Eyo masquerade indigenous to the Isale Eko community in Lagos was illegally and scandalously depicted as being used as a camouflage, decoy and subterfuge for murderers and gangsters operating in the Isale Eko area.”
The Union stressed that Eyo has been the exclusive cultural legacy of the indigenous Lagosians for close to 170 years, thus slamming Gangs of Lagos and its owners for viewing it in a “despicable and insensitive manner.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Eyo masquerade has been part of the unique cultural heritage of the Isale Eko community of Lagos since 1854 (169 years) and the Eyo is known as a masquerade for celebration in Lagos island and not an instrument of gangs of criminals as illegally and scandalously portrayed.
It said, “Most importantly, the movie has brought the Eyo masquerade and the people of Isale Eko into disrepute, who are now deemed criminally minded in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society.
“The Isale Eko descendants’ union is very disturbed that the culture and tradition of Isale Eko can be wantonly exploited in such a despicable and insensitive manner by Amazon Prime Video to the detriment of the Isale Eko community.
“The illegal and scandalous depiction of the Eyo masquerade in the movie is actionable and a petition has been lodged by the IDU with the National Film and Video Censors Board (NF&VCB) including other major stakeholders.
“The IDU has among other things requested that the NF&VCB withdraw the approval granted to the movie- Gangs of Lagos and direct the withdrawal of the movie from all viewing channels available to the public. The IDU and other community stakeholders will also be considering legal action for the damage done to the culture, tradition and image of the Isale Eko community and the Eyo masquerade.”
