UPDATED: APC’s Ikeje Asogwa Declared Winner By INEC In Enugu North Senatorial By-Election

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ikeje Asogwa, has been declared winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The election, held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, was conducted to fill the vacant senatorial seat following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented the district under the Labour Party.

Declaring the result in the early hours of Sunday at the INEC headquarters in Nsukka Local Government Area, the Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe, announced that Asogwa polled 162,360 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 9,299 votes.

Seven political parties participated in the contest.

The declaration followed earlier results from the six local government areas that make up the Enugu North Senatorial District, which showed the APC maintaining a commanding lead throughout the collation process.

Before the final announcement, results from Igbo Etiti, Igboeze North and Udenu local government areas gave the APC 20,445 votes, while the PDP polled 4,425 votes and the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) recorded 375 votes.

Similarly, results from Uzo-Uwani, Igboeze South and Nsukka local government areas showed the APC widening its lead with 141,915 votes, compared to the PDP’s 4,874 votes and the NDC’s 2,754 votes.

The bye-election was closely watched across the state as it was the first major electoral contest since Governor Peter Mbah and key political stakeholders in Enugu State defected to the APC.

Political observers say the outcome may serve as an early indicator of the state’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With the victory, Asogwa will represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the Senate for the remainder of the tenure left vacant by Ezea’s demise.
