APC’s Asogwa Takes Wide Lead in Enugu North Senatorial By-Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has established a commanding lead in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election as collation of results from the six local government areas in the zone progresses.

Results so far collated show the APC candidate, Ikeje Asogwa, maintaining a wide margin over his closest rival, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Bishop Oscar Ossai of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) trails behind.

In Igbo Etiti, Igboeze North and Udenu local government areas, the APC polled a total of 20,445 votes, while the PDP secured 4,425 votes and the NDC garnered 375 votes.

Similarly, results from Uzo-Uwani, Igboeze South and Nsukka local government areas indicate a substantial lead for the APC, which recorded 141,915 votes. The PDP scored 4,874 votes, while the NDC polled 2,754 votes.

The cumulative results from the six local government areas place the APC firmly ahead as the collation process continues.

The by-election was held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to fill the vacant Enugu North Senatorial seat.

The contest is being closely watched as it is the first major election in Enugu State since Governor Peter Mbah and key political stakeholders in the state defected to the APC.

Despite the APC’s early lead, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to officially announce the winner of the election.

Observers say the outcome of the by-election could provide an indication of the political realignment in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
