The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on workers and Nigerians to boycott telecom services from MTN, Airtel, and Glo in protest against a recent 50% tariff increase.
In a statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, and Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) directed the boycott to begin on Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM daily until the end of the month. The union demanded an immediate reversal of the hike and insisted that the previous tariffs remain until discussions are concluded.
The NLC also criticized the government for failing to protect citizens from what it described as corporate exploitation. It warned that if the hike is not reversed by February 29, a nationwide telecom shutdown would begin on March 1.
The call for action follows MTN’s implementation of the new tariff, despite the House of Representatives urging the federal government to suspend it.
