The Enugu State Government has urged residents to take proactive measures to protect lives and property as heavy rainfall continues across the state, warning that the intensifying rainy season has increased the risk of flooding in many communities.
In a public service announcement signed by Dr. Malachy Agbo, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Enugu State, the government advised residents against dumping refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams, and rivers, stressing that blocked waterways remain a major cause of avoidable flooding that endangers homes, businesses, public infrastructure, and lives.
The government also called on households, landlords, business owners, and community leaders to maintain clean surroundings and ensure that drainage channels and waterways within their neighbourhoods are kept free of refuse and other obstructions to allow the free flow of rainwater.
Residents of flood-prone areas were advised to monitor weather updates closely and be prepared to relocate to safer locations whenever necessary. The government further cautioned members of the public against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, noting that their depth and current may be difficult to determine and could pose serious danger.
Reaffirming that flood prevention is a shared responsibility, the Enugu State Government urged residents to work together to keep the environment clean and drainage systems unobstructed, saying such collective efforts would significantly reduce flooding and help safeguard communities throughout the rainy season.
The government appealed for the continued cooperation of all residents in ensuring a safer and more resilient Enugu State.
