The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) has pledged to support critical institutions in Delta State with solar mini-grids, as part of a broader partnership to drive technological advancement and research commercialisation in the state.

The commitment was made on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN.

Dr. Udeh disclosed that the Ministry, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), will support sustainable power supply in Delta State by installing solar mini-grids in academic and health institutions.

The initiative, he explained, is designed to stimulate and strengthen activities in these critical sectors of the economy, ensuring uninterrupted power for learning and healthcare delivery.

Research Commercialisation Drive

The Minister also highlighted the Ministry’s Energise Commercialisation Programme, which aims to bridge the gap between scientific research outcomes and the marketplace.

He noted that the government is working closely with private sector investors to commercialise research innovations in line with global best practices, ensuring that research findings translate into tangible economic benefits for Nigerians.

Dr. Udeh commended the Asagba for his commitment to the unity, development, and cultural heritage of the Asaba people, stressing the importance of collaboration with traditional institutions to deepen grassroots participation in innovation initiatives across the country.

Earlier in his remarks, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, outlined his vision for the ancient city, seeking the Ministry’s partnership and support to transform Asaba into an innovation tech hub.

The Royal Father also requested scholarship opportunities for qualified indigenes of Asaba and advocated for the possible establishment of a Federal University of Science and Technology in the city, which would enhance youth capacity development in Delta State.

Prof. Azinge expressed appreciation to the Minister for the warm reception and prayed for wisdom and success in advancing Nigeria’s innovation and technological growth.

The partnership marks another step in the Federal Government’s drive to deepen technology adoption and innovation at the sub-national level, leveraging traditional institutions as critical stakeholders in grassroots development.
