FG Targets Energy Stability in Universities with Solar Initiative

…Breaks ground with 2MW minigrid project in Kano

The Federal Government has commenced a solarisation project at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), Wudil, as part of efforts to improve energy supply in tertiary institutions.

The project involves the construction of a 2-megawatt solar minigrid, the first phase of a planned 7MW solar power initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Solarisation Project.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, said the initiative is designed to strengthen the capacity of universities, particularly those focused on science and technology.

He noted that the project includes solar generation, battery storage, smart distribution systems, and a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for real-time monitoring.

Udeh added that the programme also incorporates capacity building within the university to ensure sustainability.

He said the ADUST project is the third solar intervention in Kano State, following similar installations at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and Bayero University Kano.

The minister commended the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, for overseeing energy audits and ensuring due process in procurement.

The project is estimated at ₦3.79 billion and is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to expand infrastructure and promote sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria’s education sector.

The event attracted stakeholders from government, academia, and the energy industry.
