Justice for Ochanya: Kunie Foundation Condemns Delay, Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Nigeria’s Girls

The Kunie Foundation has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic death of Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje, describing her story as a chilling reminder of systemic failures that continue to deny vulnerable girls justice in Nigeria.

In a press release issued on Thursday, October 30, 2025, the foundation’s Communications Manager, Uchenna Igboeme, recounted Ochanya’s ordeal, describing her as a 13-year-old schoolgirl who suffered prolonged sexual abuse at the hands of those meant to protect her. He lamented that, years after her death, justice remains painfully delayed.

Igboeme reiterated the organization’s commitment to co-creating a sustainable future for women and children and emphasized the urgency of timely justice.

“We are deeply disturbed by the slow pace of legal proceedings and the culture of impunity that allows perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) to walk free. Every day justice is delayed, another girl is silenced, and another family is left broken.

“This case stands as a stark reflection of the urgent need to strengthen child protection systems, enforce existing laws like the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, and ensure that survivors and their families receive the dignity, protection, and justice they deserve,” said Igboeme.

He further highlighted the Kunie Foundation’s focus on advocacy, research, and community-led initiatives aimed at safeguarding vulnerable children, empowering women, and dismantling barriers that perpetuate inequality and abuse.

“Ochanya’s story reinforces why our mission matters, because every child deserves to live, learn, and dream without fear,” he said.

Igboeme called on the Benue State Government, the National Human Rights Commission, and all relevant law enforcement agencies to act decisively and ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice without further delay.

“Justice for Ochanya is not just about her; it is about protecting every Nigerian child from similar horrors.”

He also urged citizens, civil society organizations, and the media to keep Ochanya’s story alive until justice is served, emphasizing that silence and inaction are forms of complicity that society cannot afford.

Igboeme concluded by praying that Ochanya’s soul may rest in peace and that her death awakens Nigeria’s collective conscience to protect every girl child across the country.
