The Benson Nebo Foundation has honoured outstanding individuals at the Maiden Citizen Recognition Awards 2026 in Enugu, recognising excellence and service to humanity across various sectors.
The event, held on January 4, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, brought together political leaders, entrepreneurs, community figures, academics, and members of the public to celebrate citizens whose contributions have positively impacted society.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Foundation, Mr. Benson Chijioke Nebo, said the theme, “Honouring Excellence, Inspiring a Better Enugu,” underscores the Foundation’s belief in celebrating positive impact as a means of inspiring future leaders. He noted that the Citizen Recognition Awards is an annual initiative established to honour exceptional citizens of Enugu State.
“The Citizen Recognition Awards are not just titles; they represent positive impact. They celebrate citizens of Enugu State whose influence uplifts others. The honourees represent the best elements of society—men and women demonstrating leadership, compassion in service, innovation in business, and dedication to community development,” he said.
Mr. Nebo disclosed that the Benson Nebo Foundation is implementing several social impact programmes aimed at uplifting communities and driving sustainable change.
According to him, these initiatives include youth empowerment programmes, educational support through scholarships for outstanding students, mentorship opportunities for young people in inner cities, and a food bank initiative across the 17 local government areas to address hunger while promoting dignity.
Drawing from his experience living in Nigeria and the diaspora, he emphasised that national development is rooted in the values of the people, adding that progress depends not only on governance but also on the commitment and responsibility of citizens.
