NCDC issues advisory as Ebola breaks out in DR Congo

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that there are no cases of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria.

The agency issued a public health advisory on Saturday following reports of a fresh outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“There are no cases of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, as at now,” the advisory reads.

According to the DRC’s Ministry of Health, 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths — including four health workers — have been recorded in Kasai Province.

NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, said Nigeria remains free of the disease but has intensified preventive measures, including heightened surveillance at borders and airports. Health facilities nationwide have also been directed to strengthen infection prevention and control practices.

The agency urged Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with individuals showing symptoms of unknown infections, and report suspected cases immediately via the toll-free line 6232 or state hotlines.

It also advised against non-essential travel to countries with confirmed Ebola outbreaks, and directed that travellers arriving from affected regions who develop symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding should self-isolate and promptly contact health authorities.

The NCDC said it is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and African regional health bodies. Daily Trust
