The Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, has visited the survivors of the tragic accidents that occurred at Ozalla Junction along the Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway, within the LGA.
The two separate accidents led to the death of ten persons, leaving another ten injured. Eyewitnesses at the scene attributed the incident to reckless driving, including motorists plying one-way routes, which triggered the collision before the vehicles went up in flames.
The council chairman, who was on hand with his team during the emergency, assisted in the evacuation of victims and pledged the council’s support towards the medical treatment of those injured.
Ogbodo was received at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku–Ozalla, where the accident victims are receiving treatment, by the hospital team led by Mr. Boniface Uchelue, who conducted him around the wards.
“On behalf of the hospital management, I wish to welcome you here. We are glad for your timely visit to see the accident victims and for your kind financial support,” Mr. Uchelue stated.
Also briefing the Chairman, Mrs. Anthonia Anene, a Deputy Director of the hospital, disclosed that seven casualties with varying degrees of injury were admitted. According to her, six were recuperating while one was undergoing surgery in the theater. She added that four corpses had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
Call for Preventive Action
The Chairman called on the relevant federal authorities handling the rehabilitation of the Enugu–Port Harcourt expressway to expedite action, stressing that the deplorable condition of the road contributed to frequent accidents.
He equally urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify road safety enforcement and strengthen driver education campaigns across the state, aimed at curbing reckless practices that endanger lives.
Hon. Ogbodo reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of the people of Nkanu West, pledging continued partnership with state and federal agencies to ensure safer roads, healthier communities, and a more secure environment for all.
