AGF hails Simon Ekpa’s conviction by Finnish court

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has hailed the recent conviction of Simon Ekpa, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by a Finnish court.

An official press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday by the media aide to the AGF, Kamarudeen Ogundele, said that Fagbemi described the ruling as “good news” and a strong affirmation of international cooperation in combating terrorism and insecurity.

Ekpa, who has been a controversial figure for his separatist advocacy and alleged role in inciting violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, was convicted by Finnish authorities on charges of terrorism and related offences.

“The conviction is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South East,” the AGF said.

He commended the Finnish government for its collaboration and support in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity, calling the development “a signal of future collaboration” between both nations.

Fagbemi added that the Nigerian government would study the court’s judgment once received and determine further appropriate actions based on its findings.

Ekpa, who has been operating from Finland, has long been accused by Nigerian authorities of using social media to incite violence and enforce illegal sit-at-home orders in the South-East, often resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property.

The conviction marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s efforts to curb the influence of separatist elements operating from abroad. Tribune
