Anambra By-Election: INEC Declares APGA’s Nwachukwu, Azikiwe Winners

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Chief Emma Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the winner of the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election held on August 16, 2025.

The commission also declared Mimi Azikiwe of same All Progressives Grand Alliance winner of Onitsha North 1 state constituency by-election.

Results announced on Sunday at the INEC office in Nnewi North Local Government Headquarters revealed that Chief Nwachukwu garnered 90,408 votes, decisively defeating his closest opponent, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 19,812 votes.

Donald Amamgbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) followed with 2,889 votes.

The by-election was initiated to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

A total of 16 political parties competed in the keenly contested election.

Chief Nwachukwu’s victory marks a notable milestone for the APGA, as he becomes the first member from the party to win a senatorial seat in the Anambra South zone and the second APGA candidate to achieve a senatorial position in Anambra State overall. His inauguration will also make him the first individual from Nnewi South to occupy this role.

Historically, the Senatorial districts in Anambra State had been predominantly won by candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until the 2011 elections, which saw former Governor Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) break that trend. Senator Victor Umeh was the first to secure a senatorial seat under the APGA banner in Anambra State, winning a rerun in January 2018.

Similarly, INEC retuning officer Professor Ibiam Ekpe declared that Azikiwe polled the highest vote cast of 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival Justina Azuka, wife of the slain Lawmaker, to win the Onitsha North 1 state constituency by-election. VON/TVC
