…Harps on professional policing
Doris Ewoh, Enugu
The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has revealed that within 2 months of assumption of office as the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, the command has arrested 288 suspects, secured the release of 36 abducted victims, recovered 20 vehicles, 173 ammunitions and 44 firearms of different calibres including the G-3 Assault rifle.
Giwa stated these in a press briefing held with correspondents in Enugu on Thursday, April 8, 2025 at the Conference Hall, State CID Headquarters, GRA, Enugu.
Speaking, the Police Boss said he had meetings with his management team, area commanders, heads of tactical and operational units, and sectional heads to let them know his stand on ethical and professional policing, noting that bad eggs among the Force will be punished accordingly.
He said: “I made it unequivocally clear that unprofessional conduct, corruption, extortion, harassment, or intimidation of citizens will not be tolerated under my watch. Any officer found culpable will face severe disciplinary action.
“I also emphasized the need for Police officers to be emotionally intelligent and to put a human face to work, while coming down hard on unrepentant criminals and violators of our laws”.
He stated that officers must refrain from meddling in civil matters, particularly land disputes, instead they should explore Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Restorative Justice when applicable.
CP Mamman Giwa averred that to enhance security with the use of modern technology, they were leveraging the state-of-the-art Enugu State command and control centre, the Distress Response Squad (DRS) and community policing strategies to foster a people-centered approach.
He talked on the misleading media reports about security incidents, emphasizing on the strength of social media in disseminating information in this modern age and the need to stop the spread of fake news.
“I encourage all journalists including citizen journalists and netizens in Enugu State to engage in responsible media practices. Please verify information before posting or sharing any security-related content, particularly on social media”, CP Giwa said.
Responding to a journalist who asked about the actions the police had taken to investigate those behind the killing of police officers at Achi, he said the police had over forty suspects in their custody and for the Police officers killed at Mbanabo, they had about thirty suspects already in their custody.
The Commissioner of Police acknowledged the support of the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeola Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM; the Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the good people and stakeholders of Enugu State and members of the press.
