Nwifuru Grants Amnesty to 51 Ekoli-Edda Youths

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has granted amnesty to 51 persons affected by Ekoli – Edda crisis.

It would be recalled that crisis erupted in 2021 between the people of Ekoli Edda in Ebonyi State and their neighbouring communities of Egbor and Urugbam in Cross River State over a palm plantation.

Governor Nwifuru said measures were taken by Ebonyi State Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Army to find lasting solutions to the crisis which had claimed lives and property.

“The disarmament programme initiated by the Nigerian Army, in partnership with our government, was a turning point. It demonstrated the willingness of the Ekoli Edda vigilante members to lay down their arms and embrace peace. The voluntary surrender of 8 mortar bombs, 29 AK-47 rifles, and 21 pump-action guns was a powerful act of faith in the possibility of a better future.

“Today, we honour that faith by granting amnesty to 51 of our brothers who were caught in the cycle of violence. This amnesty is not just a pardon; it is a promise—a promise of a new beginning, a second chance, and a brighter future. ”
