Speakership Tussle: Lagos Assembly Passes Vote of Confidence in Speaker Meranda

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday declared their support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda by passing a vote of confidence in her leadership.

The decision came during a tense plenary session, which Meranda presided over under heavy security.

The assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, was thrown into confusion earlier in the day when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly sealed Meranda’s office, along with those of her deputy and the clerk.

This led to a standoff between legislative workers and security personnel, with workers protesting against alleged attempts to remove Meranda from her position.

Armed security operatives were stationed across the complex, further intensifying the situation.

The unrest follows the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13 over allegations of corruption and abuse of office. His removal has continued to fuel tension, particularly as reports suggest plans to reinstate him.

Despite the chaos, lawmakers managed to convene for the plenary, where 32 members reportedly affirmed their confidence in Meranda’s leadership.

One of the lawmakers moved a motion for the vote of confidence, which was unanimously approved by those present.
