At least 17 local government areas in Borno and Yobe states have been ravaged by flooding, leaving thousands displaced and homes destroyed.
NEMA’s coordinator for Borno and Yobe, Mr Surajo Garba, disclosed this to the Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri on Friday, saying the flood had devastated the agricultural sector, with many farms destroyed and crops ruined.
The affected areas include Kala-Balge, Mobbar, Biu, Jere Ngamboru-Ngala, Kaga, and Dikwa in Borno, and 10 LGAs in Yobe, according to Garba.
He warned that the weather forecast from NiMet is extremely reliable, with an accuracy rate of almost 100%, and advised individuals living in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground for their safety.
Garba added that NEMA is doing everything possible to support those affected and is urging them to keep waterways clear.
The flood has come at a critical time for farmers, and NEMA has assured support to help them recover from the loss.
The agency, along with other stakeholders, is working to find long-term solutions to the flooding problem in Borno and Yobe states, Garba stated.
He assured that NEMA is committed to finding a lasting solution to the problem and will work with all stakeholders to ensure that such a disaster does not happen again.
The flood has also raised concerns about the health and safety of the affected communities, which are still recovering from the Boko Haram insurgency, and NEMA is working to provide medical assistance and prevent outbreaks.
